DJI is aiming for the title of best overall action camera with the all new ACTION 4. How does DJI plan on achieving this? It all comes down to the one thing GoPro had over the DJI Action camera, and that was video quality. As a father of 3, I use these cameras as all-purpose cameras. In this video, I put these two camera side-by-side in a ton of comparisons. I talk about the pros and cons of video, quality, options, user experience, durability and more. Let me know who you think takes the crown.

Thank you for this thoroughly thoughtful and practical comparison between those two products. I have never owned an action camera before, but am in the market for one soon, and thus have been watching countless hours of reviews such as yours. Your presentation was by far the best breakdown and thoughtful of all the ones I've watched.. I was too tired to post a comment after watching it last night. But by the end my mind was made up about which of the two to buy but I thought I'd wait to see what the GoPro 12 might offer due to social speculation of its imminent release.
And then this morning it all came together when Phillip Skraba posted an underwhelming GoPro 12 initial impression on his channel.
I will now be the owner of an Osmo Action 4 for ground media, to blend with my DJI Mini 3 Pro for the sky, which I've been enjoying for the last 6 months.
I've watched videos of your before, all good, but this was the one that got me onboard as a subscriber. I'll be digging into your past productions as time allows, and looking forward to more insightful future presentations across the full spectrum of interests.
This means a lot. It's really easy for people to write dislikes or criticisms on peoples channels, so the praise is very motivating. Thank you for taking the time to give me your feedback.

The low light ability, the more realistic color tones, and the added F.O.V. (with less distortion) make the DJI the clear cut for me. Well done video

@@amandaburleson2035 you can do that, but there’s a reason Go Pro releases iterations so often and DJI is less frequent. DJI just makes a better, more forward thinking product. They’ve always been about two steps ahead of GoPro.
The first DJI Action beat them to having a screw on lens so that you could replace a broken lens or screw on an ND filter lens. It also had the front and rear camera first. Even the DJI gives you longer film times on their batteries (DJI gives you up to 170min at 1080p, while GP11 gives you up to 137min at same resolution).
Why always have to keep upgrading a GoPro when the DJI will give you more life of product for the same price?

As a mountain biker, the DJI will be my new camera! Plenty of reasons, but the main one is the low light. Those low light tests you conducted showed so much more dynamic range… the GoPro looked like there was no information left in the shadows at all. This is frustrating when editing a scene deep in the woods while riding. It just looks terribly muddy. Nice job DJI. Sorry GOPRO
Have just come from another review (dplama) and he had problems with the stabilisation on his bike. Not sure if he just had a dodgy camera but I will be holding off to see if it is an actual problem.
Also, not being able to easily grab a frame from footage is a pain for me. Hopefully something that will be added to the app in the near future.
Let's see what the Hero 12 can do, that's coming soon as well as we know.
There will be no good pictures in poor lighting. This is a video ad, I have a gopro 11 and it shoots much better at night 🤣 you need to set it to 1080 to make the picture brighter

I've had an action 3cfor 12 months and it's awesome. I'll definitely buy an action 4 for my kit.
Action 4 has a big advantage over Hero 11 in low light environments. Size of sensor makes a difference.

This is super helpful! Thank you so much! I never watch full videos and I actually kept watching this for the entire video because every second was helpful. You also don’t talk too slow, so I don’t fall asleep. I was engaged and interested the entire time! I think you do a great job at getting in-depth, but without making it too technical so that someone without a lot of camera knowledge (like me) can still follow and understand what you mean! I rarely leave comments, but I felt like this deserved it because of how helpful this video is! The callout and showing the comparison of the distorted view was extremely helpful since that has been the main reason I have been holding back from getting a go pro. Now with the better low light, better adjusting for the distortion from the wide views, better battery, better user experience, being able to preview in the app while recording, being easier to connect an external mic, turning on quicker, the magnetic system, etc., my choice is clear! Thank you so much!! ❤
Great video as always! Question: can you set a time for the Action 4 to automatically turn on and start recording a time-lapse? That's a feature I love with GoPros that I haven't seen from DJI yet.

Great review. We all have different needs for these small action cameras. As an Adventure Motorcycle rider I find wide angle views take away the detail. Scenery and objects seem too far so I tend to go for a more natural view out the front of the bike just as your eyes see the world. I find with both gopro and dji action 3 i keep the FOV at their narrowest to achieve this

Very informative video. I ordered the DJI Action 3 about 3 weeks ago, then saw the out of focus problems, and cancelled my order. BOY! I'm glad I did. Just ordered the Action 4 this morning.

Good comparison, thank you! Maybe I missed it, but I would have liked you to mention if Action 4 can show preview when recording. Something that Gopro suddenly and without any warning removed from Hero 9 an onwards and at that time forced us to buy cameras from other manufacturers.
Hi Aldryn. Thanks for this very thorough comparison. I find one thing very difficult to judge so I need you help. To your eyes, from what you were filming, which one gives out the most accurate colors ? For example, starting @14:25, the color of your hoodie seems gray on the GoPro and more blue on the Action 4.

Good review. I had action 3 and only problem is focus issue. I adjusted it with self fixing lens by screwing lens but I had big complain before that. Anyway this action4 seems to fix it perfectly. Good review and Thank you!

Great review! One question though: I had compared the Action 3 with my old GoPro 9. Using the same resolution, compression and frame rate, the Action 3 file size for each clip was 2-3 times larger than on the GoPro 9. Could you please compare the same for the Action 4 and the GoPro 11?
Great video. It sure seems like a slam dunk for DJI. I happen to have the DJI mics so this will be a great addition. You covered so many aspects and made it easy for me to decide.
I’d also like to point out that the image quality of the DJI was much better, in my opinion, in your presentation. For example, the underwater pool scene.
Hey, I appreciate the side by side footage. You can definitely see the low light difference in the dji. I have the new action4 but haven't been able to use it yet because you need a mobile phone to activate it and make sure the firmware is up to date. So I was thinking about returning it. That said, I'm thinking about keeping the action4 now after watching your video. Just need to find someone with an updated phone.

You get "express" shipping and it's free too. I think the express is from DJI to the Ship. Then a few days later it pulls into a dock on the west coast. Then UPS runs it over a few times, and in my case, will set at the local distribution center for 2 days, then and only then, you will get your crushed box.

Thanks for the in-depth rundown. I needed some quick advice. On DJI Action 3, the internet is filled with people trying to motovlog with it and audio running too hot even when using different adapters or lav mics. Has that problem been resolved with this one? Also, what's the kind of adapter that you're using? Is it USB C to TRS or TRSS? Thanks in advance.

Gopro will be coming with a new cam soon as well, so i would hold off buying anything right now till that comes out so it's a fair comparison.
I was about to then I realised it was slowly going out of stock in stores near me so I did a bit of digging and it was because the action 4 was imminent. Just ordered my action 4 adventure combo about 10 mins ago 😎

Amazing videos and great comparison
Great in depth look! I’ve noticed that DJI leans cooler/blueish (especially noticeable in your bike helmet and shirt), while GoPro is warmer. However, I’m not sure which is more faithful. Since you know what you’ve seen with your own eyes, which would you say is more accurate before any adjustments? And when you do color grade the footage, which would you say is easier to make it look true-to-life. Alternately, I’d also like to see which camera is easier to color grade to make footage look more cinematic and to match it with other cameras such as Canon or Sony.
The seconds do add up indeed, I agree 100%. The speed of the buttons really matter. When you use the camera all the time, the buttons have to react immediately.
I use the DJI cameras for Motovlogging and I have been filming everyday 20-40 GB for the last 3 years. I have 2 x DJI OA 1 and 1 x DJI OA 3 and where I thought the OA 3 would be the answer to life and everything I actually went back to the OA 1 as my main camera and then I use the OA 3 as my B-roll camera.
First issue with the OA 3 was that it took forever from when I pushed the button to when it started recording. Also when I wanted to stop recording, it takes forever and I had to look at the camera several times to ensure it actually turned off. Especially when you have it in the casing, as I have. On the motorcycle I need the extra protection of the camera. But the casing made it hard to turn on and off the camera. Something I never struggle with on the DJI OA1
Second issue: When I used and external microphone it would take even longer for the audio to start recording. So first 2 seconds of every video was bad audio. A huge issue for me, when I use it as my main camera.
Third issue was that the OA3 will overheat way quicker that OA1. I record in Africa and in the Middle East, so I would happen constantly. But the OA1 will only overheat if it's standing still in the sun recording. I never had the OA1 overheat while riding.
Fourth issue is low light situations: The OA3 makes horrible footage in low light, where the OA1 footage is pretty unbelievable good in low light. I ride after dark with just the head light from the motorcycle and the light from my motorcycle dashboard and gps and it looks pretty amazing with the OA1. I can't do that with the OA3.
I do love the footage quality from the OA3 when the light is good. It's really really good. But the overheating frustrates me big time.
I also love the magnetic mount. Very strong and I never feared loosing it from the motorcycle.
I also agree with the Quick shift button. It's great.
Another point for me in continuing to use the OA1 on my helmet is that it's smaller and lighter, and it makes a difference when I ride 7-8 hours a day.
I would love to exchange the OA3 with a OA4 to see if it has actually fixed the issues that I experienced and then I would consider using the OA4 as my main camera. But as it is now the OA1 is my go to camera. It just never fails on me.
I never used the GoPro, so I can only compare the OA versions with eachother.
The remote control is a game changer! I need it!
In general I find that the Mimo app is horrible. I can't be bothered using it as half the time, it wont connect to the camera.
One thing I would really wish for is the ability to trim the videos straight on the camera.

Excellent comparison.. I will try this DJI. I had a gopro7 bought on 2019, after two years the shutter button lost its function.
As a GoPro user from way back, plus the 10/11, and I also own the Insta360 X3, Go 3, and Mini 3 Pro drone, you sold me on the Action 4. It looks like a big upgrade from the Hero 11, all around. Honestly, a huge positive for me that some might think is trivial is how easy it is to mount everywhere. I despise GoPro's mounting system. The GoPro is also absolutely terrible in low-light(I found this out in the Paris Catacombs), but after seeing your low-light video on the Action 4, I think DJI is over-selling what it actually does. That being said your review was about as good as it gets and I'm glad I found it, as I hadn't seen your stuff before. I have to admit, on your video comparison, I picked the action 4 all but 2 of the examples. That's pretty impressive.
DJI is killing it. I’ve been limping along with my half-broken GoPro Hero 7 for years now. Amazing how much *hasn’t* changed! Mainly the over-heating a crashing problems…unreal it still has trouble with basic functions. I’ll be upgrading in the next year or so, DJI all the way.

The DJI looks like a clear winner here. But I gotta admit, in bright light settings, the GoPro video looks more vibrant and sharper due to increased contrast. Is there a colour setting on the DJI to simulate this appearance... like a vibrant color setting? Also, if the DJI (or GoPro) is on a tripod, for example, is there something to protect the lens? The case does not appear to protect the lens.

Was the DJI used in D-Log? I'm debating between the two but it seems like the gopro has ever so slightly better color science(that is up to preference of course) and it also seems like the OSMO does some sort of sharpening? Can that be turned off or is sharpening baked into the footage like most of their drone cameras? You can see it especially on shots with a lot of leaves, rocks or moving water
Excellent video. Action 4 looks really good and has some real advantages over Hero 11. I still found myself slightly preferring the Hero 11 pop and dynamic range in most of the side by sides. Definitely a big difference in the color profiles on each. Would you say the Action 4 has a more accurate color representation?
10bit colour so you can colour grade yourself so yes
Action 4 has more dynamic range, it's a bigger sensor.
Great video and comparison. Request for the future - please be more consistent in left/right placement of the compared products. It would be a lot easier to follow if the same model would stick to the same side for the whole video. Both in the cams footage and their external views (UI, ...).
I'm about to upgrade from my GoPro 10, but I don't use a smart phone and frequently have no access to the internet even from my laptop. These are no problems with the GoPro and I'm wondering if this will be the same with the Action 4. Dor example, can I get an independant remote to use since I don't use a smart phone ?

I'm super close to transitioning all my GoPro's setup to DJI.. super excited about their reliability the strongest point for me since i use the cameras for work and unfortunately GoPro is just not reliable. The image and colors are good but it just does not live to the expectations.
Just one think i would love to see is a side by side image between the gopro 11 with Max lens and horizon lock and DJI Action 4 with horizon steady to see how they compare in quality and specially in cropping..
That is the mode I use everyday so it's massive for me to figure this one out.

Excellent comparison. I've only seen one TH-camr mention in a video a problem that I had already noticed in other videos and that is the problem with DJI's stabilization in slightly dark environments. this is a defect that puts Gopro on a much higher level.
Not sure that one little issue puts GoPro on a “much higher level” considering the GoPro won’t even give u much of an image at all in low light. Action 4 blows the GoPro out of the water in pretty much everything. The issue u speak of could be fixed in an update later.
@@heetseeker8017 An action camera is not often used in low-light environments. The problem I'm referring to was already felt in previous models, so I don't think a software update will solve it.
My issues with the Action 3 is the clipping when moto vlogging. DJI did an update to put in a Negitave 12 setting, just curious if the Action 4 has fixed this?

Great video and very helpful, except the fact you didn’t keep one product to one side. Ie the go pro always left of screen etc. so was left discombobulated looking to which side you were referring to at the time.

I've got a couple of Hero 7 Black GoPro's that are starting to get really flaky and I was thinking that GoPro seems to have gotten enough things wrong lately that I've been thinking it might be time to abandon the brand. Hey quick question. Around the 4 minute mark can you tell me exactly which tripod grip that is with the ball head? That doesn't look like the one that comes with the adventure combo.

Damn, I already liked the Action 3, but the Action 4, even though it's not a huge upgrade, it looks very promising, especially because DJI updates their stuff over time. The night recording on the Action 4 is very impressive as far as I can tell
Have you done any photography comparisons between the cameras? on paper the gp11 is 27mp and the Action4 is only 10mp. I use my action cameras for both video and photography so any thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks for the great content, as usual. Just got my new Osmo Action 4 (Adventure Combo) on Saturday so super excited to get out there and use it. A couple of queries, if I may ask... please 😉 I want to get the best Stabilisation AND a certain amount of Horizon Levelling (don't need beyond 45deg). So, what is the best way/setting to achieve this, if it is possible. This will be mainly for skiing. Thanks in Advance.
Horizon level will work well if you are focused on keeping it level. If you exceed 45 then you can go to 2.7k and use horizon steady.

Nice review bro. I've been totally against DJI Action cams because of the terrible job they did with exposure, but this, and your sample shots have kind of sold me. The warping on the goPro is crazy compared to the action 4.
Were i ride my QUAD / considering we go slow. dont wear helmets . but when im mudding. really looking for a upgrade form a akaso brave 4. i like to record in 2k 30fps with Image stable on. any idea on battery life in this setting with the DJI Osmo. ? is there a full protective case ? im asking cause sometimes i get dunked by my quad. not under water much. but i wouldnt mind somehting i can wash off with a bottle of water. ?

Hi! Another good and informative video. I've noticed that in one video sequence the water in the pool is more "blue" on Osmo and greener on GoPro while on the other sequence in the pool is opposite. What do you think is the reason, time of the day, light conditions or something else?

Here in Croatia, DJI Osmo action 3 adventure combo sells for 515 $ which includes 3 batteries, multifunctional battery case, 2x lens protective cover, adhesive base kit, extension rode kit, protective frame, locking screw and charging cable. Standard combo costs for 405 $ and includes 1 battery, protective frame, 2 rubber lens protector, quick release adapter mount, adhesive base, locking screw and charging cable. Do you think it is better to buy separately some of necessary items like additional battery rather than buying all this at the time considering that some of the items are not essential?

Great video again, than you! I was in the fence between these two, after watching the video my mind is now made up to go with the DJI, much better value over all.
Could you do a video on the new timecode feature of the Osmo 4? I can't find a single TH-cam video on it. I am curious if it is true timecode or if it steals an audio channel to create the timecode. True timecode would be a game changer as it would be more usable in Premiere Pro. Even better would be if DJI were to add an external timecode module that you could then connect to other devices and it would sync with the Osmo 4.
DJI looks really good. I shall be buying the OA4. Gopro screwed me over (and thousands of others no doubt) with their underhanded tactics with a rollover charge without any notification! Appaling TBH. So good luck to DJI on taking over GP's consumer base!
