  • Where to even begin with this mess?! Before this, RWBY has been a good but a flawed show with excellent characters, worldbuilding and plot. Now it seems with; rwby ice queendom, justice league meets team rwby (yes that was a real thing that happened this year) and this alice in wonderland ripoff it's clear the new writers have taken crazy pills.

You know they could have just had Alyx be a reincarnation of Penny, it would make the sword turning into the dagger make sense as foreshadowing. They could have had it that when her body fell into the everafter, while the maiden powers had detached from her body her sould was still tethered just long enough to have Ascension work on her. And have her Ascended form be something meant to help and guide her friends in this strange place. Thats when she took on the form of Alyx or as a part of Alyx where she could leave clues for her friends tl follow. I dunno it would also require a rewrite of Alyx and the story but its an idea

About the next volume, for some reasons my fist tought wasn't Aladdin but Ali Baba.
Mostly because the relics are already genies lamps and to get them back they will need thieves.
But yeah, Aladdin makes total sense.
Also Neo is totally going to show up at some point to help the gang beat Cinder.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  ปีที่แล้ว +4

I haven't actually seen ali baba and the forty thieves before. Is it worth watching?
Also absolutely, neo is gonna turn up as a different version (still won't talk I bet) and help fight cinder. I even reckon she could die to save ruby as a sort of redemption thing.

    • @martinratagris
      @martinratagris ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@dlfarmer7601 I believe that there are a few animated versions of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves but they all pale in comparison with Disney's Aladdin.
Ali Baba is one or at least I knew from a version of the 1001 nights where Sherezade escapes death by execution by telling a story to her husband that ends in a cliffhanger and finishing the next night.
Ali Baba, Aladdin and Sinbad are famous in anime thanks to the serie Magi wich was pretty good as shonen series go.
Anyways, as I remember the story Ali Baba spies the thieves entering their lair through a secret door ad overhears the password Open Sesamo.
What with the relics locked behind magic doors and needing to steal the ones Salem has it just jumped to my mind.
I expect that since Jaune and Ruby took so much of the plot this volume, you would focus on people like Emerald, a competent thief who has illusion powers plus a past with Cinder and Winter who swore to make Cinder pay.
Also I fear for Nora. Not much since she is not my favorite but...
Jaune and Ren are supposed to be gendernent Joan of Arc and Mulan while Pyrrha was genderbent Achilles and Nora is Thor.
And, spoiler alert, Thor dies killing a giant snake.
I fear that after the wacky adventures in NotWonderland they would up the drama killing another important character.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@martinratagris Yeah, that comparison makes sense. I can definetly see emerald doing a lot in the next season, mainly cause vacuo is supposed to be bit of a wild city so a master thief would be effective (it's likely they'll have mercury go against tyrion and help her).
As for who could die the next season, I think you're right that it could be nora (perhaps the snake could be the creation salem makes with the staff or something out've dune)
Also, I'm not sure whether Ironwood is still alive. The city fell and was flooded but then it landed partly in the crater and he was in the heart of it where it's likely the strongest. I can see it going either way to be honest but it would be interesting if he lived and tried to assemble some remnant of his forces. Perhaps he could seriously reflect on what he's done.

@@martinratagris For sure, If there was a V10, they were definitely brining Neo back. And yeah, she will have flipped and would be helping the 'heroes' out. As is usually the case with her type of character in RWBY.
Plus, she will be cheap. No VA needed. And her appearance would be brief and late in the volume.

One of the scenes that bothered me the most and forces me to accept that this is where the story was going is Jaune giving Ruby her weapon and how she reacted to it.
Way back when they met, one of their first interactions was Ruby showing up her weapon. She was a girl two years younger than her peers and had problems socializing before that wich compensate her skill building weapons and fighting.
Ruby, Jaune are dorks and friends and Crescent Rose is a sign of that and by treating it like that I had to accept where they wanted to take the characters.
I agree it would have made so much more sense if this new world was a construction of the relics made so someone could escape the real world and live a fantasy.
It could even be insidious by giving each person what they desire so they don't leave and RWBY and Jaune each accept they need to return to the real world. Like one of the final episodes of Gravity Falls.
Admitedly they have been in the losing side for a while now, always retreating and never really gaining ground on Salem so they would have wanted to stay in a fantasy where they don't have to deal with that.
Like the weird anime dreams but better.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  ปีที่แล้ว +2

How she reacted to crescent rose baffled me and you're right, her first scene with juane was her showing off her weapon, how proud she was of it. It makes zero sense for her to fear it. Hopefully she can go back to being the competent leader now.
That kind of world would've been far far better. Plus it could really speak for the characters if they use their own individual experiences to reject the dream like desires and escape.

      @SpectreBagels 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@dlfarmer7601I think the thing with Crescent Rose was meant to be representative of a trigger, which doesn't make sense since her issue is her failures and responsibility "issues" but none of that has to do with her weapon and it doesn't make sense to have a panic attack at her weapon. It would make more sense for her to have issues revolving around decision making or responsibility. Like being scratching at being made to look after people and maybe saying things about failure. But what they did was conflate issues she didn't have with what they wanted her to have an issue with and it just makes how she acts make no sense. You can't haphazardly mesh different triggers together and pretend they relate. At the very least you need to show and explain how they do if they are so different

If you thought that new character was going to be something then your wrong and for the sake of the story it is alright. @dlfarmer7601  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@PrincessTokn Ah okay now I understand. Perhaps I could've have worded it better but my point was this is a really terrible way to write character arcs. There was not a shred of subtlety and the powers of the racoon and caterpillar was specifically made for these scenes. It came across as the writers directly telling the audience what our protagonists are feeling. The Racoon essentially says ruby lost all hope and Yang is thinking about her love for Blake while the caterpillar has each of the protagonists confront a mirror version of themselves with Ruby failing. This is perhaps the bluntest method of portraying character arcs outside of the protagonists saying it themselves.
I would agree that the idea of introducing a character solely to show the audience how the protagonist is feeling isn't bad by itself. It entirely relies on how it's done. If it fits with the world's rules (or believable for the character to be there) and how natural it is for the protagonist's feelings to be brought up. The world is so unbelievably broken in season 9 that nothing comes across as believable and with how contrived the scenes were nothing about them came across as natural. The racoon randomly auctioning something precious to Ruby (or at least was supposed to be) for "enough hope to fill this jar". That was a bad scene. The protagonists following the caterpillar into his home to have magic smoke blown into their faces so as to confront them with mirror versions of themselves isn't a natural cause and effect.
As for the arc they put Ruby on, it is exceptionally terrible. While I agree it was executed very poorly, the idea itself, of having ruby of all people be so depressed and disheartened that she kills herself is absurd. She has been through many many hardships and has confidently led people time and time again. Everything she does in this season is entirely opposed to her character.

This is a very interesting review. From what it appears, you believe RWBY was a good show overall before Volume 9, but then Volume 9 came in and damaged, if not destroyed, what came before. At least, that is what appears to be being said. RWBY was a sound show before Volume 9 broke the series like a hammer to glass.
There are a few things you did overlook or miss in my opinion, that could've strengthened your conclusion, but you're also the first one that I've heard say that Volume 9 of RWBY should be, in large part, ignored and irrelevant. Or you are the first person I've seen say that in a video format.
And this is interesting because you're probably not the only one to have such a viewpoint. I've watched plenty of critics and defenders of RWBY, and Volume 9. I don't consider Volume 9 to be filler like most. I consider it to be a gaping hole that contraducts itself and even previous canon to a destructive degree. So much so that Volume 10 is in a position of being extremely damned if it does anything. I've come away from Volume 9 with the thought process that Volume 10 has almost no option to continue the series without messing with the lore further similar to Volume 9, or retconning Volume 9 and proving Volume 9 is a waste.
I've heard a lot of criticisms and defenses. Some more bizarre than others, especially on the defense side of the arguments. But it's definitely the first I've heard someone say, and promote the idea, that Volume 9 can be skipped over, or what many refer to as "Volume 9 is filler."

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I wholeheartedly believe Rwby was a good show (not great as it has several large flaws) before volume 9. Everything in that series is absolutely terrible.
Whoever's writing volume 10 is gonna have a very hard time ignoring what happened here. Best case scenario is they retcon a lot of it or simply ignore it, i.e. pretend it doesnt exist (best example would be midichlorians from star wars). There's still massive plot holes and horrible character choices but if they're ignored then it can at least be isolated to this season. Then again I could believe these writers doing something just as stupid for these season. Honestly heard someone suggest the team would arrive in that desert city several years later, skipping over all the chaos of the refugees' arrival, character development, and even humanity's reaction to salem.

    • @Number1Rival
      @Number1Rival 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@dlfarmer7601 If the writers do have a time skip, then it will probably be considered a lazy approach. It will also bring up questions that the show would have to answer regardless of how long the time skip is. The longer the time skip, the more answers that may be needed. Then again, the writers also have caused serious damage to the timeline of Remnant because we don't have one for the main series. Not to mention Jaune's time travel messes with a lot as well. Time has also been a problem RWBY has suffered with because it seems to never use it properly, or have enough time to do what it wants or needs to do, or the writers cut themselves short.
In regards to the debate surrounding Volume 9, I've seen two dominant positions of discussion pop up. One position being the Volume 9 is filller, or will possibly be irrelevant, while the other position is that Volume 9 does matter and is not filler. A video by Blizzic called "Why 'Filler' is a Bad Criticism" argues that Volume 9 matters and should matter because it has progressed the characters while also exploring the concepts of RWBY and its tales and myths. Your video argues that Volume 9 destroys a lot of what came before, but because it ends on a reset, the series should pretend that Volume 9 didn't happen, and that the series could be better if it does ignore Volime 9. Both of you seem to agree separately in your videos that RWBY is overall good, but it seems Volume 9 is where you differ because of what it does to the characters, and how it functions as a story.
I come from a position that RWBY has been bad throughout. I like the show, its world, its concepts, and some of its characters, that Volume 1-3 and 4-9 have their own strengths and weaknesses, but that the series as a whole is bad due to the poor execution of the story overall. My position on Volume 9 is that it's contradictory not only to the past volumes, especially volume 8, but it also contradicts itself because both the themes it has cannot be right based on how Volume 9 presents its themes in the narrative it presents. I also think Volume 9 is a mess because it tries to twist the ending of Volume 8 by saying that the heroes are good enough, but then if they were good enough, how could Volume 9 exist? If our heroes were good enough, they would've won in Volume 8 and they wouldn't have fallen into the Ever After. I also believe Volume 9 highlights many of the issues that exist within RWBY overall, but then adds other issues that damage prior volumes, character progression and even damage the overall story. Volume 9 tries to act as a retcon, but in the process, it attempts to retcon what allowed it to exist in the first place, which is the ending of Volume 8. It also makes other questionable character decisions as well. Some you highlighted, some you didn't.
In regards to Volume 10, it has a few options. None of which are relatively good because it's going to damage RWBY no matter the option they pick for Volume 10 to continue from. Volume 9 is something that cannot be ignored because if it is, then it damages the story by making it seem as if we skipped a lot of character development off screen. And not all of Volume 9's issue can be isolated because some create issues in the world of Remnant overall, and if they were, that would create new problems as a result. If Volume 9 isn't ignored, then the damage done to the world and characters in Volume 9, as well as the time space continium of Remnant overall, damages the story.

Also no character assassinations. I know you're referring to Ironwood and I'm telling you right now that he's always been that way. He's always been someone willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to save people. He shoots Councilman Sleet because Sleet is, from Ironwood's perspective, trying to stop him from saving Atlas. Due to his extreme paranoia and the need to instill fear in the council so that no one opposes him, Ironwood shoots him.
It's all in the name of saving who he thinks he can save. His main goal never changes, it's always to save people.
Bombing Mantle is also in the name of saving who he thinks can be saved. He thinks Mantle is a lost cause. He needs Penny, the Winter Maiden, in order to get Atlas into the upper atmosphere. By threatening Mantle, the place he thinks is doomed already, he can get Team RWBY to hand over Penny, allowing him to finally raise Atlas into the atmosphere.
None of that is character assassination. It's entirely faithful to his character. All he wanted to do was save people, but he shuts down his emotions in order to not hamper his strategy and ends up committing terrible acts.

      9 months late...
      Good points made by all.
If i may ad my 3 cents.
On V9, I do consider it filler. It does not advance the main story. And everything was pretty much reset by the end. The only 2 items that came to fruition was the flipping and redemption of Neo. And the advancement of BB. Items i predicted not long after V8 ended.
The only thing that surprised me was that they made an entire volume out of the EA arc. I thought it would be 4 or 5 episodes tops, and then move on.
Of course since V9 had ended, it was revealed that it had been condensed, rewritten with two chapters cut because RT/CRWBY ran out of money. So the real ending was not even the intended ending. Likely closer to what I had predicted, that Raven would use her portals to get the team out of the EA.
On plot holes. There have been quite a few. I attribute them to lazy writing, or just plain skipping details when there is no real way to explain or depict something. Here go 5 more recent plot holes.
      - How did Cinder and Neo get into locked down Atlas/Mantle. Just disguising an Airship makes no sense. Would not work.
      - How did Neo and Cinder traverse the City and make it all the way into Atlas academy undetected. Again, Neo's semblance is not enough of an excuse.
      - After being dropped off in the middle of a Grimm filled raging battle field, the next scene has JRY all the way in Monstro, not a scratch. How did they get through the battlefield. How did they get inside? Ren's semblance is no excuse. This plot hole even gave 'Murder Of Birds' pause.
      - What happened to all the other people who fell into the abyss? Why didn't they appear in the EA? Even if dead as some tried to excuse, where are the bodies?
Even CRWBY couldn't come up with a viable excuse when asked publicly. Their only response was that they won't be there. They wanted to focus on the girls and they journey.
      - How did JRYE survive that ground Zero blast in Monstro? Apparently completely unscathed, and where able to escape quickly.
There are a few other examples but there you go, five. At least in my opinion.
On power scaling. It was very evident after V5. And became annoyingly blatant after V6. Power scaling in my view encompasses not just strength, but skill, intelligence. Characters where scaled unrealistically (as established lore and history goes) up and down as needed to force the outcome of a fight.
Two many instances to name, but the most glaring ones to me were the AsOps v R/W/BY fights, and the Penny v Cinder fights, Oscar sucker punching Neo, and Ruby's Silver eyes.
The pander was strong after V6. To the point of creating some cringy nonsensical as well as power scaled action scenes. First with BB, then followed by Qrow/Clover.
(CRWBY actually got burned by some of the more rabid fans in the fandom after Clover died. CRWBY learned a hard lesson.)
And no, in my opinion a suggestion for BB when the show started by some sub members on the production team (if true) does not equate to 'it was planned from the beginning'. If the creator for the series was against the idea and knocked it down, It was Not planned from the beginning, imo. The fact that they decided do BB sometime AFTER the creator passed away is a different story.
CRWBY though it would score them coolness points with the fandom. They were wrong. Instead it fractured the fandom. And not completely because of the ship, but the way it was executed, as well as the damaging impact it had on the writing.
Frankly, it's cringy and telling, that certain members of CRWBY feel a need in the last year or two to have whole podcasts on the subject trying to validate the BB ship. Especially when they knew the show was in decline. You'd think they have bigger fish to fry.
On Ironwood. Just my opinion. He was character assassinated. I have a lot of background opinion on this. But this post is already far too long. But to sum up, his heel turn was very much forced in order to give team R/W/BY a more righteous shine as the "Fight the Power".
I will throw in this one tidbit because it was mentioned. Ironwood shooting Sleet in the very first episodes was done for the sole reason of trying to put a hard stop on sympathy for Ironwood's position that had grown in the fandom over the summer.
      It was totally unnecessary.
Why do I say that? Because it served no purpose (than what i just stated). he could have had Sleet and Camilla imprisoned if he wanted them out of the way.
Plus, why shoot Sleet only! Camilla was standing right next to him and was just as loud. Why leave a witness alive?
Answer, CRWBY trying to be PC in their depictions. Not to mention keeping the female body count to an absolute minimum.
To sum up. The show is not perfect. Never was. But it was quite engaging and entertaining in the earlier volumes. That is how most of us here got hooked on the show. It seemed unique in style. Different. Fun.
But it has been on the decline ever since.
It stopped winning awards after V4, which says something.
V9 was only marginally better than V7. And I consider V7 the second worst volume. First prize for worst volume goes to V8.
I agree, V10 if it was ever made, would be a mess. Especially now after they have released conflicting bits of lore in the V9 outtakes and RWBY beyond.
And the writers did do a time skip. Something I also predicted after V8. There was no way the writers were going to have team R/W/BY face the results of their actions. Or be held accountable. That they would pop back into the would at some point after the survivors make it into Vaccuo.
I had even joked at the time that the writers would probably have Team R/W/BY celebrated as heroes when they get back.
Sure enough, that actually happens in the RWBY Beyond series! Go figure. The writing had become so predictable.
This whole comment is of course, just my opinion.
Codos to you if you read this far.

You know what really confused me the most was when Neo was shocked at the fact she gave Ruby tea. I have no understanding why she was distraught about that since she’s been wanting to kill ruby this entire season.
It’s like the more you think about the characters logic the more brain cells off themselves because they can’t comprehend the incomprehensible character writing.

Agreed. The writers tried to paint it as this revenge was neo's sole purpose in life and having it end made her realise she has nothing left but that is such hollow character writing. If anything when she completed her goal, one of two things would happen (it's unlikely she would've regretted it):
      - she could've felt elated, or at peace with herself as she finally completed her goal and avenged torchwick. She likely would've ventured out to explore more for herself or what she wants.
      - she could've realised that it doesn't bring her peace as torchwick is still dead. In this case she would've felt sad or lost. In this case, she would've cried horribly as she would be confronted with torchwicks being gone and unable to come back. Afterwards she could either properly mourn him or moved on and done something on her own.
She wouldn't simply give up as she lost her purpose in life. Kinda reminds me of star wars prequels when padme died cause she "lost the will to live".

She more lusted at the thought of killing Ruby, once that was done and settled what is Neo anymore? She can't be the person who wants to kill Ruby, she's gone. She has nothing going for herself, as a person overall. With the fact she has no voice, it allows for visual communication much more.

Don't think too much how Neo was handled. The primary goal was to eventually flip Neo. Something I predicted right after V8 ended.

Minor little gripe I have with something you said, yeah the cat isn't threatening at all, but neither is the Nuklavee, picking that thing was a poor choice of example. Apperance wise it looks threatening but in reality it was an absolute joke of a Grimm.
They built it up as this big threat even showing it's lair with many pro-Huntsmen weapons rusting away inside, and giving us the backstory of Ren and Nora with it.
Only for it to get it's ass fucking handed to it on it's first encounter with the team without anyone getting any serious injuries. Again. It was shown to have killed many *pro* Huntsmen, people who have complete their training and have been Huntsmen for years.
And yet a team of 4 students who are barely into their second year of fucking training kill it with ease. Sure Ren has his Aura broken but that's not a big deal since it never attacks him after that.
Bloody Tyrian was more threatening than the Nuklavee cuz he actually managed to injure Qrow with his tail and later kill Clover (even though that scene in of itself is stupid)
So yeah. Neither the cat, nor the Nuklavee are threatening. The only thing the Nuklavee has going for it is it's appearance.
I would have gone with the Apathy as an example of something threatening as at least those things actually got close to succeeding in killing the team.

    • @dlfarmer7601

Yeah the apathy would've been a better example or even that half human grim thing that kidnapped oscar. I wouldn't say that the team killed the nuklavee with ease but certainly should've been harder and definetly should've ended in major injuries. Even so, I would regard it as a much higher threat than the cat.

@@PositiveNihilism. Apologies for the late reply, been hectically busy on my end. Anyway…
Ruby never had an official title of hero, she became the leader of her team and later became the sortof leader of the whole group (along with Juanne). She has many heroic traits and has consistently tried (and several times succeeded) to save people so I’d happily call her a hero.
Your ideas are certainly a lot better than what we got as these ideas actually involve utilising these different perspectives to challenge ruby in different ways. However, like the scene we got, it raises the question of how neo could possibly know any of this. I’m certain she has never met any of these people (with general ironwood and Penny only in passing) so she would never possibly know what relationship they had of Ruby.
Now the fun bit, your alternative scenes with reference to the fact this is neo’s attempt to discourage/break Ruby. For each one this is where I would have ruby strongly argue against each point (if we are keeping this god awful season) as that would reflect what she thinks of each person/decision.
I assume you meant Lionheart than Theadore. Anyway, I like the setup of your scene - showcasing the fear he felt along with his depiction of Salem - but I would probably include him arguing exactly where has Ruby’s courage has lead to, perhaps even suggesting submitting would lead to less loss/pain. Ruby could argue back to submit is to allow Salem to spread misery everywhere to everyone. She must continue to fight against all who cause evil.
This neatly leads to Ironwood who could argue something like “and if your actions cause more evil?” I agree Ironwood would try to argue ruby’s plan was flawed, that her team had gone behind his back. However, ruby would rightly argue she had no other choice and from her perspective she had saved all the civilians (as there’s no possible way for her to know what happened in Vacuo’s desert). Incidentally, her plan was by far the best. It was only undone because Cinder used the very powerful lamp to figure out exactly what they all had planned, not that the character would argue that of course.
I like your scene with penny though she wouldn’t have the winter maiden power. Perhaps she could try and argue ruby should have gone along with ironwoods plan or something. Ruby could become less aggressive but argue it was the right thing to do, that ironwood planned to destroy mantle.
I think it would be better if Pyrrha didn’t fight Rwby and instead, after the penny fight, she would explain her sacrifice as you said but then be depressed and kill herself. Saying her sacrifice was meaningless.
Clover should not be involved in any of this. He never had a personal connection with ruby and his death both had nothing to do with Ruby and was profoundly moronic. Easily the worst scene in Rwby before season 9 but I’ve broken that down in a different video.
So after the Phyrra section this would be ideal to bring in Ozpin and have him explaining his dastardly actions (at least what Neo would want to show her). I wouldn’t even have him beat ruby at all and instead a montage of him manipulating people throughout the centuries leading to each of the previous examples. He would then explain ruby was just another naïve child he easily manipulated. Ruby would then argue against neo herself, saying none of these people felt this way and she (through Oz or someone else) can she actually argue against these points to which she would. Ruby would put her trust into Oz, believe to keep fighting no matter what happens. Neo could then get furious with her and then perhaps have each of them fight her all at once.
Much prefer your ending where torchwick throws ruby into a pool of the tea rather than her drinking it herself (especially quite like the similarity with his ending). I truly despise this scene as it utterly destroys her character as with frankly little effort Neo got ruby to kill herself. I understand and agree your idea of using a similar scene to challenge her in different ways would have been far better. Difficult to implement but would’ve been far better than the insultingly terrible scene in a mire of abysmal writing.

@PositiveNihilism. Well the puss in boots example doesn't work as Neo isn’t nearly as omnipresent as the reaper. And Salem wouldn't bother to speak of ruby to Neo (and they only met briefly in the whale). At a stretch, Cinder might've talked about it, or at an even bigger stretch neo found this information out herself (the spiders and her own investigation).
Anyway, your visuals are far better than what we got and not only does it allow unique fight scenes but unique character interactions. The dialogue and arguments I suggested could have been happening during the fight scenes (Phyrra and Ozpin being the exception).
The purpose of this scene is characterisation over everything else. It needs to establish why Ruby would fall into despair. It cannot be understated just how badly the original scene and season failed at this. Anyway, couple points:
Ruby being seen as a grim version of herself is a neat visual but it would only convince the real Ruby to fight instead of giving up.
Ruby definitely wouldn't grovel at Torchwick's feet. She would almost certainly argue back at him but if she was somewhat broken by the experience she would likely softly apologise (more to everyone than just Torchwick).

I kinda disagree with some of your points about things not making sense - considering the volume is Wackyland Isekai, I would've liked it to be stranger. And I think copying Alice in Wonderland is okay.
Ruby being off character is a criticism I understand, though don't necessarily agree with either; the fall of Atlas was team RWBY's fault. It's not something the writers realized, mind you, but it *is* their fault. Plus she realized her mom is now probably an undead half-Grimm abomination. Normal that she isn't feeling cheerful, even less so than at the end of Volume 3.
And I did love when she yelled at her team (but probably because I wanted to yell at them myself).
As for the ascension thing, I really wanted her to get a slight redesign so I was disappointed that she came back unchanged, but you're right: had she lost her memories or become a completely different character the entire plot would've been derailed.
You're also right about Neo and the tone problems in the first episodes, it's a complete mess.
Funnily enough I thought this was the best volume in a good while up until they got to the tree, where they dropped the ball by refusing to commit to any of the changes they made. Jaune just going back to his young banana-haired self is something I *particularly* despise (+ it's not Alyx's fault so her wish shouldn't have fixed it).

    • @dlfarmer7601

If they wanted to reference to alice in wonderland, i.e. having a reference to the girl who fell through the world (as in one of the characters saying I don't think we're dreaming or something similar) or having a similar colour aesthetic or framing that would be fine. They did it with cinderella and Atlantis but in a subtle and respectable manner (cinder's backstory definitely doesn't engage her with the audience however). Literally copying every main element of Alice in wonderland is terrible. It reeks of uncreatively and laziness. Not to mention it doesn't fit at all with RWBY. They could've written it to be this incredible, vibrant otherworld filled with creatures, cultures and designs unlike anything we've seen before. It's animation so it's not limited to anything from Earth. So yes it could've been stranger but so long as it fits with the worldbuilding of rwby then it could've worked. Imagine a world created by the gods where by day life blossoms and thrives but by night everything's destroyed by scores of strange grim creatures and this repeats over and over again forcing the team (along with a captured or following neo) to search for an exit while trying to survive.
Ruby should be feeling terrible about her plan failing, certainly guilt ridden but she would never give up on life or act like a completely different person. What she could've focused on was that from her perspective the plan saved tens of thousands of people as Atlas and Mantle were pretty much doomed anyway. Ironwood's plan to leave Mantle to its fate is a far more strategic move but would've cost countless lives which is why team rwby didn't go though with it. This season could've had ruby wrestle with that decision but they didn't for some reason. Also i didn't consider ruby's mum to be a half grim, I just assumed she was dead. Could be interesting.
The tonal problems were baffling to me. How could any writer be so stupid as to do that rock throwing gag while the main character is crying about her dead friend she tried to save.
I have no idea what the hell the writers were doing with the finale at the tree especially that wish. You're absolutely right that it wasn't alyx's fault so if anything he should been de-aged to the day she met him, perhaps ten years younger rather than twenty. Also a bad thing i just thought of: he's now a thirty or forty year old in the body of a teenager and likely to get with Weiss. So that.

Hmmm ruby is giving thing that are important to her is because she's GIVING up. I thought that was easy to see. Hence why she cause sepuku as well.
Anyway i still consider season 9 better from the rest.
They did hesitate... I mean yang did.
And john being stupid is in character.
Actually I'd re consider watching rwby again because of season 9.
Seeing the neo fight got me back.
But seriously season 9 is better than the rest. Which aint saying much since the rest was a mess.
I like how they made ruby crumble
Imagine a child falling to pieces and neo keeps on breaking the glass.

Apologies for the long delay in this reply, anyway...
So it's obvious the writers have written it so ruby has given up, that's not in dispute. What's wrong is that this is entirely against her character (her character throughout the previous 8 seasons would never do this nor anything she does in this season).
A single moment where yang and blake briefly pause to confess their love isn't really hesitation. What I meant was a deep reaction where one thinks it through (doesn't necessarily need to be brief or long). Either way the main criticism was how their confession took place and how it took away a much better, character focused scene.
"John being stupid is in character" Couple things here: one, his character arc started from an incompetent, bumbling fool to a strong leadership role. There's several problems with his arc before now, especially in the last couple seasons but him being stupid isn't really in character. Second I didn't even mention his intelligence, my main criticism was how unblievably depressing this is - he spent decades waiting for anyone to show up, then when a pair did he was betrayed then spent more decades doing the same pointless routine over and over again. I honestly don't think the writers have realises how horrible they wrote his life in this world.
I'm assuming you mean the scene where neo creates those illusions to break down ruby as the fight that brought you back. When neo fought with yang and later cinder, it was incredibly well choreographed. This merely had a bunch of unending shapeshifting clones toying with ruby. Where's the fun in that. She doesn't have to do anything. The spectaclar fight scenes are the main draw of ruby and they had none of that in this season.
I seriously don't understand how anyone could watch all of Rwby and say season 9 is better. In fact I struggle to find anything of any quality from season 9. The tone is bawked beyond belief, the worldbuilding is entirely nonsensical, the characters are fully inconsistent from what we've seen before and the plot is so horribly contrived. Name one thing that is good from this season (not including the animation). There's plenty of problems with the previous seasons but my goodness this so much worse.

Neo and ruby fight was nice too. Clones sure but still a fight scene. I dont mind fighting clones. It shows the tactical side of neo. Why would neo fight her head on? Plus she want her to suffer. Whats the point of just killing her right there and then? Thats why she wants her death to be unique.

@@jamihcustodio6808 *cracks fingers* okay... Could you give me an example of when a character breaks character on purpose. Breaking bad works because everything he does slowly (emphasis on slow) transforms him from a good person to a bad one. Simply saying this character is different from how he/she used to be is sufficient, is not storytelling. It's incompetence.
So you liked season 1 and 2 then. Interesting. More interesting is why you disliked season 3. Perhaps because it moved away from the spectacle: Evidence, Season 3 was where the tone shifted from light hearted entertainment to a deep story. This continued throughout the series until season 9 where it suddenly became alice and wonderland, which you liked. You have yet to describe anything from seasons 3-8 that you dislike hence I believe it's simply the tone that matters to you. Could you give examples of what other anime/shows you like with similar and different tones perhaps?
"I don’t mind fighting clones." "It shows the tactical side of neo." Okay then, why doesn’t she spawn a hundred million clones? That would suffocate ruby by sheer number of physical bodies, and cause her extreme pain in the process. Tell me, would that be out of character? or would it be too big for her unfounded new abilities?
Also can you tell me how rwby before now "sucked balls"? I really like to know. Details please as I really like to improve my own craft when it comes to storytelling so understanding how stories work/fail really helps.
Lastly, you don't find what happened to Juanne extremely depressing?

    - Actually everything about Jaune goes towards him not knowing, given that most civilians don't and at the start that's what he is having forged his way into Beacon.
    - Ren's semblance is a matter of suppressing himself or other's emotions to hide them from the grimm; v8 has that expand to being able to see emotions. Which is right there in the same vein, if anything having him see what he's been suppressing.
So in neither case is there a rule break.
On top of that, v8 ended with all of RWBY&J + Neo falling into a Voidspace that they were warned not to do; one that is in-between Remnant's plane and a pocket-space. In what world would that NOT lead to a world like Ever After. The only thing that has happened is that world of RWBY got blown open into either a multiverse (different worlds within a universe) or omniverse (different worlds, planes, pocket-spaces, etc).
    - Um yeah, those civilians aren't brought up because its both obvious that they died and aren't relevant to the main storyline. Its pathetic and petty ass nitpicking
    - Different world from a different and originator god that works based on its own rules, thus there being no reason for it needing to obey Remnant's.
    - Actually the reincarnation system has no bearing on creatures wanting or not wanting to be eaten by a predator. Also the Jabber is the only thing capable of breaking things out of the reincarnation cycle not of killing in general, anything can kill but whatever is killed cycles back in a new form without their prior memories.
    - Actually no, given that v9 is picking up immediately after v8 and no one has had a chance to rest to regain their aura and semblances.
    - The Jabber was faced against 4 opponents that weren't afraid of it as opposed to its usual of fearful Afteran prey. That makes sense regardless of whether you think its intimidating or not
    - EVERY character is a new character, because "different world" dumbass. Also yeah, narratives do require nudging or bringing up certain character arcs; that's not an unusual thing.
    - You do realize that its perfectly fine and done across media to have comedic moments to balance out sad/serious ones, right? That isn't tonal inconsistency, its letting off the damn emotional gas pedal. Not to mention emphasizing Ruby's state by her being out of it.
    - Oh yes ignore that Ruby was doing the pragmatic thing in order to try to get them home, especially as Penny's sword is the item that the toy soldiers saw at the auction
    - Once again death is a thing in the sense of being reincarnated without ones memories in a new form.
    - The cat mentioning eating said mouse, thus explaining the fear
    - Um no, they took the idea of the Caterpillar and made it their own within this world with one of the most unique designs in the series; while maintaining the original concept. A concept that they never hid, yes this is a world inspired by Alice in Wonderland and they never once hid that idea.
    - Once again narrative instrument that's old as the medium itself, also not introducing new characters its themselves earlier in their journeys that serve as a very damn good mirror to show how far they've come.
    - It changes from sword to dagger, because it was inside Ruby's mind not the physical world
    Skipping ahead through the drivel
    - Actually no it was mentioned that the storm will eventually disperse, so all they'd need to do is wait long enough.
    - As a result of that ^ they also weren't being forced into doing anything, which is furthered by their body language shifting away from any degree of feeling in danger at all. Which for the audience is already established before that with Weiss falling into a pit and landing fine afterwards.
    - What it did allow is giving BB an absolutely gorgeous fking confession and kiss scene involving a beautiful sky in their colors, a floating island for just them, vines that grow based on their emotions, and flowers that bloom the same way. As well as having them tackle the mountain that is the "friend/romance line" that anyone that has ever faced, especially LGBT+ people know is a massive deal that carries risk. And this is involving characters with trauma and self-doubts in spades. Regardless those gorgeous things wouldn't be a thing if it weren't for the storm, which fits just fine within the magical damn world. And I can easily say I wouldn't make that trade at all ever.
Regardless I'm going to just leave this at this and not bother listening to some moron that didn't even pay attention to what was presented to them.

For a long time I didn't agree with the complaint that comedy in RWBY was tonally jarrng, but this volume I really started feeling it. Take Episode 4. The first half is very comedic and has a moment where Ruby thinks she's got the Cat only to panic and whimper comically as she loses him. Then the second half focuses on the team's insecurities, and shows that Ruby is in a worse state than others right now. But then... wasn't that scene in the first half basically making fun of a depressed person? "Haha look at this fucking moron, look at how she looks around helplessly, completely clueless, what a buffoon, isn't this funny how panicky this depressed person is?"

@@CrimsonXE But don't you think it's a bit inappropriate to have both of these scenes in the same episode? If we're to sympathize with Ruby's terrible mental state, why are we also laughing at her acting stupid?
Not to mention that she's supposed to have matured past acting like a kid, and even if you really want her to be comic relief again, this arc is pretty much the worst time for this.

    • @CrimsonXE
      @CrimsonXE ปีที่แล้ว

@@olserknam She's not acting stupid, she's acting frantic like someone that's lost something. Also more on the cat than her. There's nothing that says that a depressed person can't also express other aspects of themselves; I should know given how easy it is for ones in my family to dive into depressive episodes. On top of that there's a reason the latter half is the latter half, namely having everything build to that point of seriousness.
Also she isn't supposed to get rid of all her kid traits, just that she overall has matured. There's plenty of grown adults that have some of their kid aspects.

@@CrimsonXE The moment is still framed as comical. Ruby is framed as a helpless little girl, and we're supposed to laugh at it because isn't it so funny and cute how confused she is? This feels condescending and humiliating. To understand what I mean better, would you defend it if Yang had a bunch of comical moments like this in Volume 4?
Not to mention that framing Ruby as a funny bumbling idiot generally undermines the idea of Ruby being a strong dependable leader. And in a volume where she doesn't get to do much and spends most of it helplessly sulking in depression, adding jokes on top of that feels like rubbing salt into injury.
