    Shangri-la is good because it doesn't have high stakes for me. I've read a lot of manga where vr game is a trap, sentiment, powered by people in coma or actually another world.
    In all cases it turned into something dumb and nonsensical. The stakes are 'I want to beat that hard boss' and that's enough.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It doesn't necesarily need to have high stakes. Just any kind of stakes would be nice. There's no sense of challenge, or hardship or adversity. Nor is there anything particularly interesting about the show or protagonist. He uses a couple daggers and high agility to kill the monsters. Imagine if he used physic exploits or glitches or spam attacks. Or even tried to speedrun the game. Just anything worthwhile would be nice.

    • @dragomanpl1109

      @@dlfarmer7601 He used physics exploids to kill the swamp boss and spider boss, he tries to solo raid bosses and times throwing reviving items in the air to keep healing himself. How many episodes have you seen?

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dragomanpl1109 Roughly four episodes. Anyway, that isn't good enough. What I meant by physics exploits was using some bad game mechanics to cheat the bosses: using dodgey collision pyisics to jump to high places, switching between weapons to get faster attacks, throwing items to send boss to another location of the arena. For a joke, he could've stood at the enterance fired pop shots. Could've got outside the map and struck the boss through the wall or something. At least beating bosses in an interesting way.
      Him throwing reviving items in the air may be a highly skilled trick but that isn't enough to make a fight engaging. Also highlights that he's so skilled he isn't going to lose either.
      In any case, that still doesn't acknowledge that there's no stakes at all. If he dies he can just respawn. If for whatever reason he has to start over, he can do just that. The anime is simply watching a guy play a game for his own enjoyment. I'd much rather watch a playthrough of a game on youtube.

    • @dragomanpl1109
      @dragomanpl1109 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@dlfarmer7601 Dunno about stakes. It really doesn't matter because if there were any protagonist would win anyway. And I think it's wrong to assume you have to break a system to make fights interesting, for me it's opposite.
      Main character is show to be really good at video games but not in a overblown matter like a lot of shows with 'OP' characters do. Maybe I'm just too used to trashy stories in similar settings so seeing a decent one is actually refreshing.
      The big fight in the middle of season actually has stakes if you really want some. Then again, the main appeal for me is that the main character isn't forced to play this game.

  • @martinratagris
    @martinratagris 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Thanks for the video. It is obvious that it took a lot of work to put together and even if there were some valorations I am not 100% in agreement your opinions are clearly a lot better put together than most.
    That is a lot of anime and I am surprised I watched at least the first episode of most of those shows.
    To be honest I cannot be sure because there were some that I simply had forgotten completely until I saw your opinion on them and likely will forget the moment this video finishes.
    After watching your review of the second season of Vinland Saga I was surprised to see just how many considered it contender for Anime of the Year and defended it as a deep philosophical character exploration when the only thing that contributed in my opinion is the "I have no enemies" meme that I myself have used a couple of times.
    ...
    As for Spy x Family I must warn you that... it seems we have saw IS the show. As in, most of the manga is small slice of life moments cut by short arcs where relatively exciting stuff happens that in no way advances Anya earning more Stellas with one exception.
    Basically in nearly 100 chapters of the manga we got one more Stella. It is worse than those romantic comedies where the leads take over 8 seasons to say they like each other.
    But if you enjoy the comedy we have seen so far and the occasional emotional moments with even more occasional high action then you could enjoy the series.
    Just keep in mind that the mission seems to be less time sensitive than what we thought and that Loid and Anya have ar least a decade to gain the Stellas.
    ...
    I feel bad for all the things Mushoku Tensei's adaptation is leaving out.
    For example we were supposed to meet the big demon king with six arms, Badigadi, back when Roxy was in the Demon Continent and he was to introduce a couple of characters that will be relevant in... maybe season 5.
    That is a weakness or a strength of the series that would depend on your taste for worldbuilding.
    For example the flying castle that Rudeus briefly sees in the first season or the second volume of the novel doesn't become relevant until volume 14 or what I am imagining would be season 3.
    That ability to write seemingly unimportant pieces of worldbuilding only to expand on them later on, once tou caught on, makes you read more carefully and finding that seemingly unimportant descriptions would later become important parts of the story.
    For example, the first book "Fitz" tells Rudeus to read when he is researching the Teleportation Incident will become important in the next part of the second season and if they introduce the contents of the book when it is relevant it would feel almost like a Deus Ex Book where the answers to a challenge are presented along with the challenge.
    ...
    I better write another comment for other series...

      Thanks man. Definetly did take a lot of work and overall I'm happy with the video. Definetly gonna be some contencious points that can rightly be debated (and definetly some that can't , i.e. RWBY season 9 deserves to be the worst one of the year)
      You'll be amazed at just how many people think Vinland Saga season 2 is one of the greatest anime ever made. It really comes across as though they must support it as much as humanly possible simply because the first season was spectacular.
      Awww. Kinda dissapointed that's the direction of Spy Family. Was almost hoping for a time jump where we see a slightly older Ayna or something. I'll have to see what kind of jokes there are as that seems it'll be the same kind of comedy done again and again by this point.
      I understand there are definetly things anime studios have to change when making an adaptaion but you're definetly right that there should really be stuff they should've included. The demon guy suddenly turning up at the academy was rather jarring. I guess they felt they had to squeeze him in somewhere and just threw him in. Honestly forgot about the floating island until you mentioned it and thought nothing of that book.

      As for if Realist Hero somehow gets another season, I'll simply crack my knuckles and effortlessly break it apart for a third time. I almost want to see how unbelievably bad it'll be as the last season left it with industrialisation, religious pressures and time travel to handle. For a show that can't even understand hungry people equals sad people, it may be ungodly idiotic.

    Hells Paradise was a surprise for me but then I learned that the author was an assistant to the author of Chainsaw Man...
    Huh... Chainsaw Man didn't make to the list... too bad because it has it's moments. Both really good and really bad.
    Anyways, Hell's Paradise was really good and the one positive is that the manga is already finished so the anime can easily cover it in a couple more of seasons although I am not sure the series stick the landing.
    I liked the ending fine but the epilogue after the end was... not disappointing but underwhelming.
    ...
    Demon Slayer really got some great moments and it still has some left the problem is that after the arcs filled with action the next one is a training arc to basically bring the trio of MCs to Hashira level so they can be in the final fight without being killed immediately if a Pillar is not there to save them.
    So the training arc is there for people to get their breath before we go deep into the finale.
    The great scene you hinted at, where our goody two shoes protagonist is faced with the decision of letting people die in front of him or abandon the most precious thing for him should have been split into two episodes so the relief was delayed and instantly followed by the dread that while the heroes won the villain finally found what he was looking for and if the good guys mess up they would hand it to him.
    ...
    Honestly I want to say that it is better to be good or bad because the truly mediocre that one hardly remembers are not even worth of a roast but sometimes you could use that.
    Honestly, I like many others rolled my eyes so hard when I read "Reincarnated as a Bending Machine" that I gave myself a migraine.
    I totally expected to forget this series the moment I stopped looking at it but maybe because my expectations were so low, I ended up enjoying it more than if I had gone expecting something good.
    ...
    About Zom 100 and to a lesser extent, Attack on Titan.
    It really shows how a problematic release schedule can kill the momentum of a show.
    Attack on Titan was a cultural milestone for sure and I was going to watch the ending anyways but I know dozens of people who simply checked out after the final part final part part 1.
    Zom 100 was nowhere as relevant but whatever good point it has were overshadowed by the fact that people weren't sure when they could watch it so they just drifted to other series.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah Hell's paradise was such a great surprise last year, glad to hear the manga's all done and cannot wait to see what happens.
      Chainsaw man was in 2022 so it wasn't included but on that note, think I could have probably given it more attention at the time as I kinda brushed it off as another generic shogun anime. Definitely didn't come across as anything special but I could've definitely dived into it some more.
      I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens with the next arc of demon slayer but it does sound like the action and tension will be lessened. I did really like that scene but one thing I was really divided on was that she survived. On one hand it sets up the main villains goal of obtaining her power but on the other it came after this large build up of dread that she could die as well as being this massive motivating revenge for our protagonist. Again I'm very happy with the scene but there's this "what if" thought in the back of my mind.
      Reborn as a Vending machine really was a surprise for everyone. Everyone expects the epitome of trash anime and finds it isn't bad. Perhaps it is as you say, that the expectation was so low it came across as brilliant by comparison.
      I was so disappointed by the discourse surrounding the final parts of attack on Titan. It was like everyone suddenly didn't care at all about it when it showed a different perspective.
      Zom 100 could have really done better to portray what kind of tone it was going for, the marketing alone would have done a lot to show it's rather depressing. Instead of having a poster showing our hero gleefully biking from a horde of colourful zombies, perhaps it could've shown some aspect to reflect the sad nature of the show.

    I'm sorry you didn't enjoy Lieselotte. Yeahhhh I agree it's rather boring and relies entirely on absurdist comedy without the budget or insane-enough characters to do so. I did enjoy it myself, but that's because it resonated with me: the plotline (spoiler warning) where Lieselotte faces severe episodes of paranoia and anxiety because the Witch or whatever it's called is inside her. Going through similar emotions myself at the time, it felt cathartic seeing Lieselotte attempt to overcome it and seeing her supported by those around her.
    I wouldn't say it's fair to compare it to "My Next Life as the Villainess" since the characters are entirely different (admittedly much more bland though) and the threat of the bad end is played straight. I'll agree it's not as exciting. This comment feels incoherent, but ultimately I can see why most would get bored with it even if I liked it.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you enjoy it and feel it personally resonates with you, fair enough. This video is meant to comment and analyse the objective quality of the anime last year. It's perfectly fine to like bad shows and hate good shows. I myself really enjoy High school prodigies in another world despite it being unbelievably horrible in every sense of the word. Meanwhile I don't like Princess Mononoke despite acknowledging it's really well made with a clear, concise message.
      It's definitely not a one for one comparison with my life as a villainess (the commentators above makes a substantial difference) but both do involve a light-hearted dating game suddenly becoming real where the villainess becomes good and must avoid a bad end. The comparison was mainly to highlight the comedic difference.

    You did Shangri La Frontier injustly dirty.
    I may not always have stake, because its a video game and not a virtual purgatory, but when it does it has decent ones.
    During fight with Weathermon they cannot lose, because there could be a threat of PK Guild killing the boss if they don't do it.
    Also they already wasted a small fortune in healing/resurection items, so earning that items/money back could give rival guilds an edge over them in form of time.
    Also the main purpose of the show isnt some grand plot or high stakes, but just the fun and enjoyment experienced while plaing your favorite game and beating its challenges.
    For me at least.
    Maybe some people just like the fight scenes and/or "magical girls" with voice of Alucard from Hellsing.

    Truth be told I honestly don't get most isekai and vr game anime's. They don't have a plot, an over arcing, or world building and the MC is OP to begin with, atleast SAO and Log Horizon had stories to tell and MCs who are not OP. Then there's Overlord that deals with MC being OP well. Then theres Youjo Senki which is honestly the best isekai I've seen and the manga is leagues better than the anime with how many things the anime skipped over.
    There an many manga's in the Isekai genre most have a great stories to tell and for some reason aren't adapted into animes
    Here are some I would recommend
    The Dark Queen And I Strike Back
    Yondome Wa Iya Na Shizokusei Majutsushi
    Her Majesty's Swarm (got axed)
    Musket Girls (if you like pre WW1 stuff)
    Gunka No Baltzar ^
    The Galactic Navy Officer Becomes An Adventurer (sci fi and isekai a rare gem)
    Overlord and Youjo Senki (manga is better than the anime and light novel is better than the manga)

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely agree. Most isekai almost inevitably go down the same run list without thinking what makes isekai attractive. Very very much love Youjo Senki as well.
      Just read the descriptions of each of those and they all seem to have quite some potential. If adapted in the right way they could be rather good. Afraid I haven't read any manga, nothing against them I just haven't started (yet).
      On the same point, it's a shame anime constantly has to rely on what seems popular rather than looking at what makes good stories or even what kind of message/world/characters to craft. Code Geass the anime was made before the manga, and FMA original carried on without the manga as well. I imagine both would have been great risks at the time so its interesting to look at as there must have been a lot of faith put into these stories.

    • @denithwijesinghe4128
      @denithwijesinghe4128 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @er7601Agreed 100% . They were risks but paid off the problem is that what makes a good profitable anime isn't whats being focused on and instead the genre. There are some really great manga's out there that get axed (Her Majesty's Swarm and Dungeon Seeker) and poor anime's being adapted or getting second seasons like Goblin Slayer for example. It is in my opinion a poor anime to have a second season if the topic of childhood trauma is not being addressed because the plot of the anime is in it's name. Doesn't take a genius to know what the anime is about with a title like that but it had huge potential had it focused on it's strong suits like childhood trauma, connecting with people, etc.
      Where as anime's like Kiba or Aldnoah.Zero were really good anime's. Kiba's whole story got adapted into an anime on top of that you can't tell what the story is about by reading its name unlike Goblin Slayer. Aldnoah.Zero deserved it's second season as it continued the story and really focused on wrapping things up while also touched on some major topics to keep things fresh. Rather that rehashing the same tropes from the first season like most tv shows and animes do nowadays.

    • @dlfarmer7601
      @dlfarmer7601  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @denithwijesinghe4128 I agree that a lot of anime (especially nowadays) seem to have the entire description as the title in the vain hope that it'll become popular. There are exceptions of course like Helck and Tearmoon Empire but most drift towards the trend. Honestly, if Goblin Slayer focused much more on the world and the internal dynamics of different factions then it would've been far better. Even if they had Goblin slayer start fighting things other than goblins it would've been better as he would’ve been outside his comfort zone and would've needed to learn from square one. Oh yeah and it’d be nice if they kept the priestess’s personality. Then you could easily bring back his childhood trauma and perhaps developed his character.
      Haven't seen Kiba but really love the first season of Aldnoah Zero. The latter may have had the most blandest protagonist in the entirety of all fiction but the battles were really clever, the duality of the worlds was fascinating, the sheer disadvantage of earth was gripping, each of the different players was exciting and the protagonist, princess and main villain all got shot at the end. Everyone wins.
      Therefore, I utterly despised how the second season started. From essentially the last holdout of Earth's defence force in some Siberian base they're now in the tropics, main villain is alive despite being shot a dozen times and continues to be annoying. Priestess is still alive despite being shot and killed very quickly so the war now has a peaceful end goal rather than a brutal war of the worlds. Plus the other cast think she actually now believes humanity should be purged which makes zero sense. And worst of all, the black hole of emotion survived being shot in the face. Rather than forcing the rest of the cast to come up with their own strategies to handle the advanced mechs with what little they have, the guy who makes data from star trek seem like will smith is back from the dead. I hated it so much that I refused to watch anymore than the first episode of that season.

      Mostly everything excluding Mitsuri's flashback, the great animations, some great fight and maybe the finale but some gentle youtuber spoiled it for me in a thumbnail and I couldn't appreciate it fully.
