    The house you mentioned for 2.7 million was owned by people from Muncy Pa. who ownd a modular home manufacturing buisness.
    The wowser wowser house was owned by the Brenners, who were in the real estate business on Duck Key.
    I bought my lot from her in 1987 at 380 E.Seaiew drive, which is just a short distance from the Brenner property.
    At that time Debbie Grill was working for Elaine Brenner and had just started in real estate.
    Her husband John Grill was working for a builder by name of Graber at that time. He ultimately took over that business and it became Grill construction. They built many of the homes on Duck Key, and of coarse Debbie became the number one sales agent there.
    The shame of it all is that Duck Key wasent a gated community from the very beginning. Frankly there is far too much gawker traffic of all kind, walking, biking, and by vehicle, and much of it is as a result of Hawks Cay resort.

    Great on becoming a Realtor. Not saying that I'm old but I was living on Conch Key when they were doing the finial digging of the canals and building the bridges. They were build houses as fast as they could go back in those days. That was back in the early 50's. Yes the canals have always been some of the cleanest in the Keys and do not hold grass as the water flows really good through them. At that time Conch Key was a commercial fishing village. I lived with a captain named Dale Doolittle. Their house was on the north end of the island. It is the L shaped one and now has the lower part enclosed. It is the largest lot on the island. When I got married in 1960 I moved back to Miami. We could have purchased a house right next to the old boat house with a 42' boat for $10,000 at that time. We were young and thought that was way to expensive, ha,ha. Enjoy the Keys guys. By the way the part of Conch Key on the left hand side of the highway was just being dredged and only had one house trailer on it.

      That would make a good story, but the truth is slightly different. Bryan W. Newkirk was rich & retired and had become bored, because he was now a doer without anything to do. He'd made his first fortune in newspapers and his second fortune as a mine owner in Canada buying "distressed" mines and re-opening them. Newkirk's Winter home was in Coral Gables, and there one day in 1951 over a round of golf his well to do opponent offered him a solution for his boredom. _"Bryan, here are the terms. If you lose this round then for a fair price agreed to once you see it, you'll buy an island with development potential I own down in the Florida Keys."_ Shortly thereafter and for the price of $47,000 Mr. Newkirk acquired something which would keep him occupied for the next 9 years.
      He sold Indies Inn (now Hawk's Cay) right before it opened in January, 1960 but agreed to run it for a year, while retaining ownership of the rest of the island. Unfortunately the sale of home plots was not swift in the early years of Duck Key and the Canadian government came after him alleging unpaid taxes. From what I read his last few years were not pleasant ones. He died of a heart attack in 1966.
      When hurricane Donna hit in 1960 he and his family rode it out inside Indies Inn. It only became apparent to them earlier in the day that a hurricane was approaching, as Donna pre-dated weather satellites and all people had to go on were reports from ships at sea.

      What a cool history! Laurie had looked up on the internet that Duck Key had been a salt mine or salt production area way back when, but since neither of us were sure of the actual history we didn't put it in the video. It is so cool to hear everyone give their bit of knowledge on the area...there is so much history here in the Keys!!! Thanks to you both!

    @Matt_from_Florida 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    12:14 Odd. *Do you think you 'caught' them either returning or leaving for an extended amount of time?* You don't usually see just a couple of windows with the hurricane covers on. That is a beautiful house. But at my stage of life how could I possibly justify having all that space? I need a "tiny home" with a fake façade. A _'Hollywood_ front' so to speak. I need 600 sq. ft. that looks like 12,000!!!

    So...I like those 2.7+ million houses in Duck Key, but they all seem to be nestled next to really large cul-de-sacs...but not a lot of homes on them...are these public "rest" areas or "view" areas? Or just for the home owners? Its a little odd

    • @GablesOnTheGo

      I think it's just the end of the streets...I would guess definitely not public rest areas.

  • @dgriffin6074
    @dgriffin6074 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A big reason why so many can "afford" to build and live in areas that are prone to flooding is Federal legislation (1970s?) that resulted in the taxpayers having to subsidize the costs of flood insurance. Before that time only those who were willing and able to pay the high cost of flood insurance owned houses on islands like Duck Key.

    • @GablesOnTheGo
      @GablesOnTheGo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would agree that it certainly helps, I would not think that would be the reason someone could "afford" to build or live here....
