Hey there, Curator from the History of Diving Museum here. I looked up your video because so many recent visitors have commented they heard about us from you. Thank you for including us! We're very proud of this museum, and always happy to have more people learn about it. As a local I also have to say you really did the Keys justice with this road trip.
I’m sure you’ve been told this many times but I would like to say how wonderful it is that you take your father on all of these wonderful adventures. Doing that with your dad creates memories that will last forever. Good job.
I'm so glad I took my own dad (RIP two years ago) to Key West many times. He was of a generation that saw much turmoil and disaster from the great depression to the 2nd World War. I was able to give him a taste of positivity via our travels and the association with my 'doodle' dogs Buddy and Star. Love you, Dad.
Not a joke, these TroughMyLens videos have evolved into what feels like a Travel Channel bigtime $$$$$ production level. Don't ever give up on your documentary dreams! Peace and blessings to you and your pops.
I lived in Key West for about 2 years in the mid 50’s. I was in elementary school. Great place for kids back then. Rode our bikes everywhere. Went fishing, caught conch (legal then), lobster, lizards. Saw coral snake. 7 mile bridge was 2 lanes.

My parents took me to Florida for my 30th birthday (a long time AGO) Loved the ride in their RV from Daytona to Miami then to Key West. Thanks for the memories
I just finished a Key West trip with friends and used this video as the guide for our stops. We hit almost every single stop you mentioned. They were incredible! Thanks so much for creating this video.

Just did this drive in February 2022. I rented a convertible to do this trip and it was AMAZING! The 3+ hour drive went by so fast with the top down, wind in my hair, sun on my face, and the smell of salt water. My drive was straight through but I will definitely do this drive again sometime, so thanks for the tips on stops to do along the way!
Great trip, thx - I had the privilege of being born & raised in old Florida - going South on US 1 for a weekend trip was dotted with small settlements of orange grove & sugar cane fields appearing every few miles (Mom & Pop stuff, 1 gas station, a general store, maybe 1 stoplight & a post office) & then navigating the old bridges was exhilarating & scary at the same time - we held our breath & drove real slow - at noon we would back the boat out into the water & waterski out to those tiny lil islands for picnics & a day in the quiet sun & sand (not a sound in the world but the lapping waves) - a different time then as the restaurants & souvenir shops of today had real families living in those wooden dwellings with no air conditioning or TV, just living in the slow, warm, humid glow of Florida life - a tad melancholy now, as history proves, every life becomes a museum - ah, the way we were ... thx for memories ...
I don’t really like Florida, but whenever I see the natural areas and the wildlife, I love it again. Gopher tortoises and manatees are my favorite animals to see. I’ve lived in South Florida for most of my life and the natural beauty of the area, not just the ocean, but the inland forests and wetlands cannot be understated for people into that sort of stuff
Great story. I grew up in Miami in the 1950's/60's and know well what you are relating too. Different place altogether now and few know what we had or experienced in those days! As kids we lived on our bicycles with a fishing rod. Left at daylight on the weekend and didn't come home till dark burned red from the Florida sun. Scrounged for soda bottles to get some spending money, etc and went all day on 75 cents or so! Caught lots of fish and our mothers would fry them up the next night for dinner! Kids today don't know the freedom we had in those days. We knew how to fish, we worked for the little money we could get to spend and we knew how to repair our bikes when they threw a chain or got a flat...........self sufficient 12 years olds we were!

We just traveled to the Keys and it was fun to compare the spots we visited with what was suggested. We spent 4 days in Marathon and enjoyed a party boat fishing trip, a snorkel adventure, the no-name pub on big pine key, sombrero beach, Islamorada brewing and an everglades eco-tour. So many fun things to do, thanks for making enjoyable videos!
I love that you make these videos traveling with your Dad. You're having father and son trips that most of us can only dream about and envy you. I wish I could have done something like this with my Dad. Happy Trails to both of you!
Wee have made this trip several times. First time was in 1965. Once we rode our motorcycle. After having visited all 50 states, I think this is one of the most beautiful drives in America. Going next month (7/2023) with out three youngest grand children . Can’t wait to share this memory with them. BTW, great video, well made. Can’t believe you left out Southern most point pylon;-).
Love the Florida Keys. We went there pretty much every year for a week back in the 1990s with my father, his best friend who lives in Florida and my brother. Initially we went around Spring Break when my brother and I were still in college. The first few years we rented a house in Marathon and then later my dad's friend had a condo in Key Largo for a while. His friend would either drive or tow his boat down there and we would spend the week scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing. In the evenings we'd go to Blockbuster and rent "Keys Classics" - aka a bunch of action movies. At least one day during the week we'd take the drive down to Key West for the evening. Great memories.
I'm glad it wasn't sunny. The cloud system just adds to the dynamic of this trip. I lived in Florida back in the 90's. No, I've never been to the Keys....😔
You're so lucky to have great traveling companions in each other. I loved traveling with my parents, and sorely miss them now that they're gone. I went to Key West with them once but don't remember much since I was very young. I went back a couple of times in college, and both times we camped at Bahia Honda, $10 a night. Can't beat that price! The midges were fierce though. Thanks for another great video!
My last trip with my dad before he passed was to the keys. Taking his picture at Roby’s was when he realized he was balding, since he was bent down to feed the tarpon. Funniest part of the whole trip. Thanks for the memories!
My last time with my Mom (unbeknownst) was in Islamorada. We were there for Christmas week. My parents lived in Vero Beach and I in Stone Harbor, NJ at the time. After we left and I flew home, I never saw her again as she died in February, but oh, what a beautiful place for the last memories. 💔
You two are the perfect mix. Your enthusiasm and facts are spot on. Your Dad's low key laid back style is awesome. Really have enjoyed your travel videos.
My wifey and I did this trip mid April. I hadn't been since 1980. Did not stop at as many spots, but had a great time, especially in Key West. Thanks for a wonderful vlog of this special place. Awesome you could do this with your Dad. Great memories!
You're a lucky man having a father on a road trip that cares a lot about you my father don't do nothing for me and it's sad but I've always wanted to visit the keys and hope you and your dad had a great trip
Loved your video. It was simple and so laid back with your dad "pops", that was so nice to do your trip and video with him. And, not a lot of face time, great more time on the Keys, where I have always wanted to go. Thank You, Pamala 64 from California
I just trampled on your channel lately and already watched some videos and found them very nice, amusing and informative.. Your Dad and you seem very nice and humble guys.. I live at the other side of the world in the middle east and I have been to the US only for a few weeks many years ago but I am really enjoying your videos which show the beauty of your country and people..
Loved this trip. Interesting. The hurricane memorial and boat. Great photo of the tarpon, hand in mouth. Your dad is very brave. Thank you for sharing so that we can enjoy !!!
I agree that you do great videos. It's not just the filming... it's YOU. You are enthusiastic, but have a calm voice that is easy to listen to and you talk about positive things which keep each of your videos interesting. I am a new follower, so I have been trying to go back and watch your older ones. I have never been to the Keys, so this is a fun, new idea for the future. Thanks! (of course, we love Pops, too, he is such a great sport.) :)
Thank you so much for that lovely tour of a place I visited about 40 years aback. Your dad and yerself did an amazing job at enveloping the many tremendous activities, sights and scenery, foodssss and did I mention FOOD, the actual drive and beautiful and exciting Duval street. Thank you for some old memories and many new ones.
You and your dad at so much fun to watch. My only complaint is I wish the videos would be longer - 'cause I'm enjoying them and don't want them to end. 👍
Thanks . I made that drive many times in the 1950's . My mom & dad moved down from Jersey and for me it was like moving to another Universe . The 7 mile bridge a was two-lane-wooden that was daunting . It creaked & almost touched the water of the Gulf . Almost none of the places you visited were there , except Coral Castle . However , NATURE was there in all it's glory . Fish , conch shells . If it's still there , next time visit the John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo , the World's only underwater park . They also have the bar where Bogart's film Key Largo was filmed . It was another time , but the water brings it all back home . Thanks for the memories . :)
Durango, John Pennekamp is still there and you can camp there, snorkel and take dive trips. The Carribean Club is where Key Largo was filmed. And, you can actually go on the original African Queen boat for a day cruise or dinner cruise. It's located next door to the old Holiday Inn on US1. If you make it back, stop at the original Mrs. Mac's Kitchen for the cottage potato fries and key lime pie!
I just loved watching this so much. Everything was so fun from beginning to end. I dream about visiting and even living in the Florida Keys. Your video is so great for those of us who are too busy or too far away to get there. It truly is a gem. Thank you for putting this all together. I also love all of the comments on here from the other viewers.
You really have the best (at least my favorite) travel videos. These are seriously worthy of being on television or the travel channel. I watch before bed most nights and it really helps me wind down mentally. Keep up the good work!
I’m making a surprise package trip for my parents for their 36th anniversary. Thank you for laying out a map of adventures for me to send them on! I know they will love it.
Your info is SPOT ON! We drove from Miami to Key West where we are now. Every place you said to stop at, we did. We have enjoyed ourselves so much. Thanks for the great info!!
Hello and thank you for a nice representation of our home. As a resident of the Keys you did a good job. There are so many stops that it is very difficult to Shaw all of them. But you and your dad did great. I live in Big Pine Key and work in Key West. We hope you will come back and share your honesty!
To everyone who is reading this, you’re beautiful and an amazing person. Please exercise frequently and eat more fruits/veggies. I wish you all good health, great success, and everlasting happiness!!!!!!
I am from the finger lakes area of NYS, I can remember going to key West with my parents as a 16 year old in 1976. We drove a motorhome from NY all the way to key West. And back at Christmas time.
Me, and my dad traveled from Jacksonville to the keys in February this year . I’ve been to Florida many of times nothing like the keys love it. Planning on coming back in here October. Keep on exploring!
Now that was fun. It was a great "driving day trip" for me too since I haven't been there for many years. Lots of changes for sure yet the water is as beautiful as ever. Thanks guys.
We took that route in 1990 , wife , son , daughter and myself. I got a Chevy suburban Scottsdale 1985 and I can’t afford to fill it up the gas tank back then just drove few miles and returned back home at west palm beach county. GR8 video clip. Greetings from North Texas.
So nice to see a father and son trip. This video makes me wish I was in Florida. I miss visiting Key West, which I last went to on a honeymoon in 1991. Would love to drive back there.
Awesome video ...brought back many memories...had a sister that lived in Marathon on duck key ...seen BETSY THE LOBSTER many times ...visited the turtle hospital...swam with dolphins @ Hawks Cay ...driven the 7 mile bridge many times ...fed the tarpons....just so many memories ....thanks for sharing...
Loved this video - the Keys was one of my last trips pre-COVID (I live in England). I absolutely adored it, and miss it real bad, so thank you for posting this!
At Bahia Honda, you used to be able to get a boat over to an old salvage island and get a great historical tour. Don’t know if still there but was worth it.
I grew up here, you captured my childhood perfectly! When they are older Bring the kids and take a glass bottom boat tour from John Pennekamp SP! Always a huge fan of ur videos ❤, a CaliFloridian
I really enjoyed your video on the Florida Keys, as I once lived in Key West. My father once owned a house on Flagler Ave and I attended Key West High. I would love to visit there someday again.
Thanks for the video! My family vacationed in the Florida Keys every year from 1963 - 1987. In the mid 2000’s, my son also worked as a director at College of the Florida Keys so I got to spend more time there. I LOVE the Keys and your video brought back all the happy feels I have associated with them. The only other thing I would recommend to people (if they have time) is a stop at Dolphin Research Center near Marathon. They are incredible creatures.
My only Miami to Key West trip was a rushed one due to a road hazard and three flat tires. We made it just in time for sunset, which was beautiful! I hope to do it again, with time to see some of the things you’ve shown.
Flew in to Miami from Los Angeles California. Stayed in Miami for 2 nights, drove down to Key West & stayed 2 nights. On our way back to Miami we stayed each night at a different Key. Wish we would’ve stayed in Key West longer. Our favorite!!! Soooooo nice
AWESOME, sweet and INFORMATIVE video. very nice to see the scenes; My daughter has a great-grandfather who lived, during his lifetime, at KeyWest. so INTERESTING to us!
Another great video! You could always go back when its a sunny day! I never would of known about all these interesting places without your videos, keep 'em coming!
Great video….. i have lived in miami over 25 yrs…and been to the keys a few times…..but ive never taken such a scenic route down there….you have inspired me to do this..!! I so love the eating trips to the keys….I’m glad you had fun with your dad… look forward to your next videos!!
This was in my feed and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice work. I went to that Coral Castle when I was a kid 40 years ago! The drive was long back then but as you get older you begin to appreciate the journey and not just the destination.
Brang back lots of memories, when I was in high school would go down to key west every weekend since my parents knew people who had a house there. My grandparents lived in Key Largo. Went to the turtle hospital a few years ago and we did a tour. If you can, you should next time!

I'm glad it wasn't sunny. The cloud system just adds to the dynamic of this trip.
I lived in Florida back in the 90's.
No, I've never been to the Keys....😔
What a wonderful trip!!! For you and now for us…thank you!!! (And pops too).
This is well done video. No delays and long explanations. What a treasure to spend time with your Dad! I wished I could have spent time with my Dad.
It has been amazing to have this time to travel with my dad for sure. I can’t imagine how cool that place would be to camp!
My folks are gone now, too, and I still feel lost and miss them every day.
Been here for awhile and I went to the Key West Cemetery, great place to start walking, so many old churches and other first-time buildings,
My wifey and I did this trip mid April. I hadn't been since 1980. Did not stop at as many spots, but had a great time, especially in Key West. Thanks for a wonderful vlog of this special place. Awesome you could do this with your Dad. Great memories!
Do the tolls accept cash? I'm doing this trip in a couple of weeks
I’ve done this twice. Once in a car and once on a Harley. The bike trip was the best of the two. No need for a third time.
Was in the keys last spring.. Your take on the goings and comings are very nice.. Pleasant to see you smile while you narrate ....Cheers...Dog
Thank you kindly!
You're a lucky man having a father on a road trip that cares a lot about you my father don't do nothing for me and it's sad but I've always wanted to visit the keys and hope you and your dad had a great trip
same
LOVE the Keys. Thanks for sharing!
Loved your video. It was simple and so laid back with your dad "pops", that was so nice to do your trip and video with him. And, not a lot of face time, great more time on the Keys, where I have always wanted to go.
Thank You,
Pamala 64 from California
I just trampled on your channel lately and already watched some videos and found them very nice, amusing and informative.. Your Dad and you seem very nice and humble guys.. I live at the other side of the world in the middle east and I have been to the US only for a few weeks many years ago but I am really enjoying your videos which show the beauty of your country and people..
Enjoy watching you and your dad doing these trips. Your dad seems to be a cool men. Grate job sir
Thanks so much for the nice comment, I appreciate it! Thanks for watching the older videos as well!
I used to make this trip at least 6 times a year when I was living in Miami. Now live in NE Florida. I miss the Keys.
What a wonderful way to explore the variety between Miami and Key West. My brother and myself were thinking about this trip a few yrs ago.
Thank you. It inspires me to want to do this. Key West here I come...
You and your dad at so much fun to watch. My only complaint is I wish the videos would be longer - 'cause I'm enjoying them and don't want them to end. 👍
haha that is a good way to feel! I hope to put all the Florida stuff together in a long video later this month too
Such great memories you are making with your dad !
I agree, been an amazing two years of travel with him
I’m moving to Florida next year and your videos just helps make things easier for everything I want to do! Thank you!
That’s awesome getting to take your dad along with you. Cherish it, some of us never get the chance!
I did a trip from Miami to Key West back in 2002. Didn't stop in all those places though but still brought back some lovely memories!
Glad it brought back fun memories!
@@lanceb.4404 Thanks . :)

Thanks for sharing yourself, your dad and your journey! Can’t wait to begin mine and stop at your recommended sites! Cheers!
I’m making a surprise package trip for my parents for their 36th anniversary. Thank you for laying out a map of adventures for me to send them on! I know they will love it.
I’m going to do it from Tampa to key west. Your dad is so laid back
Thank you for your video, my daughter is turning 16 and for her b-day we are planning to go to Florida and take the Key West ride. We are from NJ.
It was wonderful travelling through Miami with you and your father. Watching from Lisbon in Portugal
To everyone who is reading this, you’re beautiful and an amazing person. Please exercise frequently and eat more fruits/veggies. I wish you all good health, great success, and everlasting happiness!!!!!!
thanks
My husband and I are taking the Key West road trip and I can’t wait after watching your excellent video!
Thanks!
No problem! Thanks for the tip and sorry it took me so long to see it!
I live in south Florida and take that road for my fishing trips and yet it feels nice to see that on video
Now that was fun. It was a great "driving day trip" for me too since I haven't been there for many years. Lots of changes for sure yet the water is as beautiful as ever. Thanks guys.
Road Trip with Dad. Always a fun thing to do! 👍👍
We took that route in 1990 ,
wife , son , daughter and myself.
I got a Chevy suburban Scottsdale 1985 and I can’t afford to fill it up the gas tank back then
just drove few miles and returned back home at west palm beach county.
I absolutely adored it, and miss it real bad, so thank you for posting this!
reminiscing of our travel there about a year ago with your recommendations !!
It was GREAT!!! Thanks for all the first class videos!
At Bahia Honda, you used to be able to get a boat over to an old salvage island and get a great historical tour. Don’t know if still there but was worth it.
That sounds awesome!
I was Born in Miami and was on the old hiway to key west with train tracks :) everything you show here is very new but cool.
Thanks for sharing, brought back some memories of my two drives down to Key West some years ago.
Lived in Florida in the 60s and made that trip several times. My favorite place to swim is Bahia Honda.
Those massive tarpon are actually babies! You are in a tarpon nursery. Great vid! Love it!
I had a good trip about 3 years ago. Loved Key West!
One of my favorite places, I love the keys ❤️
I grew up here, you captured my childhood perfectly! When they are older Bring the kids and take a glass bottom boat tour from John Pennekamp SP!
Always a huge fan of ur videos
❤, a CaliFloridian
Sounds amazing, I will for sure do that!
Do they still run reef snorkeling from Pennekamp? I did that in 1974 and fondly remember the beautiful reefs … and the barracudas.
I would love to go back, such a beautiful area
Thank you great video. I’ve been there but it’s been about 40 years. I’m going to go back this year because of your video
Very well done. Done it many times still love it. Take the boat to the Dry Tortugas and camp now there it is a different world
Great video….. i have lived in miami over 25 yrs…and been to the keys a few times…..but ive never taken such a scenic route down there….you have inspired me to do this..!!
This makes me happy. Hehe! I live in big pine and it’s a joy to see someone telling story about florida keys! Hehehe.
Your father was amazing …beautiful pics and moments 😍
Brang back lots of memories, when I was in high school would go down to key west every weekend since my parents knew people who had a house there. My grandparents lived in Key Largo. Went to the turtle hospital a few years ago and we did a tour. If you can, you should next time!
Glad it brought back memories! I will visit the hospital next time for sure
@@ThroughMyLens and you need to do the Pigeon Key tour as well that's in the middle off of the 7 mile bridge.
