    Lived there for years.
    Don't expect great costumer service from local stores !
    The isolation from the mainland gives the locals a " I don't care, they are not repeat costumers anyway "
    Attitude.
    (What are they going to do?
    Drive to Miami instead?)

      Personally it doesn't bother me what kind of attitude the servants have as long as they have what I want.

      Agreed! Until the lady realized I was going to her store daily we love our local convenience stores, we bring gifts to them for the holidays and make friends, i don't know if i will in key west now because they are RUDE!!!

      My family and I felt like we were intruders the entire time we vacationed in Key West. The locals were very quick to take your money, and then almost begrudgingly took us parasailing, fishing, etc. On Duvall Street, they made it very obvious that once we finished our food, they wanted the table vacated immediately for the next set of tourists. It was the only family vacation we ever took that our kids did not want to revisit. Such a shame, as it is a beautiful area.

      @@GroundedFlyboy737 I'd say Key West really isn't for kids or very kid friendly. I tell my friends to leave your kids at home when they go there.

    With Covid & flight restrictions abroad , I'm thinking of living in Key West bi annual The Naval Base says they have homes & cottages for rental . As far as Gas if I have a vehicle I make a point to keep the tank on half full learned my lesson about enough gas in the tank in Death Valley on way to Los Angeles. Buy Local Sounds Good and than you for Posting This Video.

    • @rolandfero9742

      It may not matter to you, but monroe county is the only county still requiring face masks indoors. Key west recently requires masks outside also. As far as the naval base, l think thats only for navy and ex-navy folks. Because it is, an active base. Gas is about 10 cents /gal cheaper at the racetrack staion mainland, than at the 2 cheapest places in marathon. Key west is about 35-45 cents more a gal. I always fill up in marathon. Hope this helps.

    • @GablesOnTheGo
      @GablesOnTheGo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I may not have made my point on the gas thing as clear as I should have in the video...what I was trying to say is that often the stations in Florida City are lined up with people waiting to get fuel....I have found the few cents a gallon it might cost me to come on into the Keys was really not worth my time waiting in Florida City. I think people that are not familiar with the Keys have the impression that they won't be able to get fuel for miles and miles when they get down here...and that's just not the case. And it's rarely much more than on the mainland.

    • @timmyjones1921
      @timmyjones1921 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GablesOnTheGo Oh No , your point on gas stations was to the point . I just wanted to add I try to never allow my gas tank to get below half of a tank .

    Awesome video, Mark! You conveyed a lot of great information. Diana and I drove down to Key West in 2018 and had planned to return this past summer of 2020. However, as you well know that summer sucked and we were on lockdown for a while. Driving down to Key West I was pleasantly surprised at all of the islands' offerings. Being from Maui I felt as though I were going home. I finally called it quits and retired a second time (first retired from the Air Force in 1988). We recently experienced a power outage that lasted 34 hours and I looked at Diana and said we are moving to Florida. She nodded and said ok! We have family and friends throughout Florida on both sides of the peninsula. We prefer the Gulf side and are considering Tampa and Clearwater. We will rent initially until we find what we want. If it was just me I would move to Marathon or Key West. l am an avid water sportsman. Diana did not like the drive from Miami to Key West and back to Miami. She wanted to fly to Miami and I would pick her up at the airport. We stopped once to stay at a hotel and ate at a super nice restaurant which appeased her.

    We wanted to book a boat ride to the Dry Tortugas in August, we ran into two problems. The Charter to Dry Tortugas is booked 3 months in advance and the Hotel, rooms are $300-600 per night. We were going to book a Hotel in Homestead Florida instead, except that would be a 3 hour drive so we would have to get up at 3:30AM in the morning to take the charter. We would like to go in September or October instead. I am a Realtor in Katy Texas, I specialize in long term rentals.

    • @GablesOnTheGo
      @GablesOnTheGo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, things do often book up a way out down here. We learned to book most things 9 months out when we used to vacation here. September and October are the slower months for tourist here. You might want to check on motels in Marathon or the lower Keys just above Key West for more affordable rates. If you type in motels while looking at the area on google maps you can see a lot of options. Good luck with your adventure! Thank you for watching!!

    Major kudos for promoting "buying local" !
    As far as groceries, I found that moving from IN to FL, milk is much more expensive than I was accustomed too. No one uses milk as a loss leader like grocery stores in the midwest. Also if your're not familiar with Publix and Winn Dixie, both embrace BOGO pricing which is great as long as your buy during their ad. Otherwise, items can be pricey compared to retailers "up north".
    Love your channel, keep em comin 😎
    Doug

    • @GablesOnTheGo
      @GablesOnTheGo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I agree with you on the BOGO pricing, it can be a bit deceiving sometimes! We find that overall, our groceries cost only slightly more than we were paying in GA...really not enough to make much of a difference. Milk is definitely one of those items that blows the curve however! Thanks so much for watching!!

In our one day trip to Key West we passed over 42 bridges, including Seven Mile Bridge, and 34 islands as we traveled the scenic Overseas Highway and drove around Key West. We stopped to see Anne's Beach, Sandal Factory outlet and stopped to say "hi" to Big Betsy, giant lobster in Islamorada, ate delicious Pie at Blond Giraffe Key Lime Factory in Tavernier, stopped at the amazing Seven Mile Bridge, we reached the southernmost Point and much more! How does the fishing compare: Marathon vs. Key West?
    Thanks!

    • @GablesOnTheGo
      @GablesOnTheGo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on what you are targeting. Key West is a tough place to beat for offshore fishing just because it is at the end of island chain and your can go any direction from there and reach less crowded waters....Marathon has very little flats or back country fishing but for the average angler, all of the Keys offer some great fishing.

    Coming to the Keys this summer for our Honeymoon and we are currently trying to find a place/resort to stay for the week. What are your top 3 areas to stay? In town? Just watched the isla Bella resort video and we liked it but it’s an hour away from downtown.

    • @GablesOnTheGo
      @GablesOnTheGo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it depends on where you want to stay, Isla Bella is in Marathon and close to everything there. If you are planning to stay in Key West I'm really not much help for you there. Marathon is really our stomping grounds, Tranquility Bay, and Isla Bella are our favorites there . We like Marathon because it has all of the amenities and is a bit slower pace than Key West, plus you are directly in the center of the Keys there so you can go an hour either direction and basically see all of the Keys. Islamorada is very beautiful but very busy up that way.

    I so bad want to move to the keys! I've been to the keys at least once a year my entire life. My grandfather started the tradition of vacationing in the keys when my dad was little, my dad continued the tradition when I was little and now I'm continuing the tradition with my children. Unfortunately the housing market is very expensive and being a fireman is the only work background I have that would provide me with a livable wage. From what I hear, firemen in the Keys are volunteer. My wife is a nurse, but I heard nurses are better off working in the mainland in Miami, so it'd be a long commute for her. Maybe one day when I retire I will be able to finally live my dream in the Keys. I'll definitely be giving you a call about bringing my boat down there. I just purchased a boat and I was planning on taking it with me when I come down in October but decided I would wait till next year after I get some more information. Perhaps next year we will give Airbnb a try and get one with a dock and a driveway to keep my trailer.

    @Gables On The Go, Thank you for your video! While my family is kind of locked in to a rental in Key Largo and can't change where we will stay, one thing I didn't consider when looking (because I assumed) is where are the beaches? We are travelling with our 3 adult sons and 6 yr. twin granddaughters in June. The girls don't know how to swim, I have no idea what the guys want to do...I think I made a mistake choosing a place that is uber tourist-y. I need advice on where to go to get that beach therapy, what's not going to cost an arm and a leg and any helpful advice. Thank you again for the video, you were very helpful!

    • @GablesOnTheGo
      @GablesOnTheGo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! True beaches are sort of scarce down here, the Keys are mostly rock and coral. Bahia Honda State Park has one of the most popular beaches and that is just over the seven mile bridge from Marathon close to Big Pine. There is a really nice beach in Marathon called Sombrero Beach. It has a very nice park for the cookouts and playgrounds for the kids and a lovely beach. There are many rental homes on the water very close to this beach. Take a look at our website at www.keysrentalsonline.com and you can browse properties. Laurie and I don't handle the rentals directly just the home sales, but the folks in our rental division will be glad to help you find the perfect spot!
