    Quick answer, yes you can drive on a tire like that. You probably won't be driving very long or comfortably on that tire, but you can drive on a tire like that.

    I just wanted to thank you for this video. I started watching you a couple of years ago with hot rodding a snowblower. Mine turned out so good that I can't wait for it to snow. However on this video I couldn't believe how easy it was to poke a hole in the side of that tire. I always thought that tires were much harder and thicker than that. Thanks for the tutorial. I never had much interest in mechanical things until I retired, Now I have enough tools in the garage to keep the space shuttle serviced. Thanks to you!

    I averaged 110mph on the Alcan Highway between the Alaska border and Haines with my 911 Porche back when the Alcan was dirt. I toasted a steel belt radial at about 1/2 way. Another tire died as I pulled up to the ferry terminal at Haines. They wouldn't let the car onto the ferry with a flat so I hitchhiked into town with a flat and the only tire I could find had an Easter egg on the sidewall. It got me onto the ferry. The ferry got into Seattle at 11pm and I drove all night to Sacramento California on the Easter egg tire and was sitting outside the Sears tire center when it opened.

    Just a few days ago I had something similar, but more dangerous !
    Had been noticing that my truck had a vibration for a while so took it to the tire shop to put two tires on the front. When the guy removed the left front he dropped it to the floor and the tread split about twelve inches ! If I had tried to drive the ten miles back home that tire would have come all to pieces and no telling what could have happened !
    And yes, I had looked that tire all over very carefully and not seen any damage and it still had 70 percent tread left on it !
    Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍

      When I was a kid, I lived out in the country and one day I heard a really strange sound on the road in front of our house. It was sort of a roaring sound but metallic too. Yep, when it got close I saw it was a old truck driving along on nothing but four rims. Every few feet a spark or two would come off them and the noise was horrendous. I don't know how far the guy was traveling, but he seemed to be doing fine at about 20 mph. Something that I've never seen again since.

    I was pumping gas when I noticed one tire nearly flat. After inspecting it closely, I noticed the bubble. I put air in and drove home. Don't know how it got the bubble. Either I drove with a nearly flat tire for a few days or there was some sort of impact, puncturing the tire and causing a slow leak and ultimately the bubble.

    Ok so I just bought a used tire earlier today and this evening I noticed that my low tire pressure light came on (same wheel that I got the tire replaced) and I noticed the same bulge in the tire that is shown in your video, but it’s a little smaller. The thing is, I won’t have any extra money to get a new tire replaced until another day and a half and I’m in a tight situation to where I need to make deliveries in my car until the time being. Do you think my car will survive for another 36 hours with this bulge while I’m out on the road? I’m honestly scared of it exploding while I’m out on the freeway or something and I won’t be able to afford anything extra until payday. I’m just concerned because I can’t afford having my tire self destruct on me before payday.

    I only have one question; can it be fixed by patching the damaged area? Like you patch a puncture that goes all the way through?
    If no, why not?
    If yes, how long would that patch last?
    Thank you for your answers! 🙏

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No. Because the sidewall flexes every time the tire goes around. Going at freeway speeds, this flex happens about a 1000 times a minute/ 16 times a second. This flex will stretch and pull off any patch you put on a sidewall. That's why they say they can't repair a puncture or anything else if it happens in the sidewall.
      If you lived in a third world country, they could revulcanize the rubber and fix the sidewall. It would last the tread life of the tire. But because we live in America, there's not a single company that will touch the sidewall of your tire.

    Is there a way a tire shop can make a bubble manually to scam someone 🤔 asking since I bought new used tires and only wanted a install and they told me layer after waiting for a while that they discovered the bubble after it was mounted...

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not likely. More than likely the used tires you bought already had the damage. Or the bubble can happen if someone dismounted the tires without a machine and were overly rough. Tire shops will always give you a hard time if you bring tires in to just have them mounted as they make virtually no money. They make all their profit off selling you tires.

    I've had this happen to me but it was on the inside of the wheel well. Driver side and on the side closest to the engine. I noticed a constant imbalance, a wobble. I had a feeling of what was going on, but I was on a bridge when it blew. No more wobble, and a whole lot of shit scared out of me. Sounded like a gun shot and since I was on a bridge between the bridge walls, it was a sound that bounced back and forth, so it was louder. Good thing I got the damn thing home, I was only a mile from my destination. I went from 60 to about 80 until my turn off. Once I turned onto the next highway which was another half a mile, the tire lost pressure fast because there was no tire expansion and when weight of the car pushed it all out. Needless to say, 15-20 mph the rest of the half mile home. I drove it in a way that the tire stretched under the rim so the rim wouldn't make contact with the road, I was hanging out the road and constantly watched it. The rim didn't even have a scuff 😅

    Agree with 90% of your outline, however the term radial relates to the way the nylon threads are arranged, rather than the steel belt under the tread. I'm a generation older than you, and recall the transition from cross ply tyres to radial tyres and then to steel belted radials. Nowadays car tyres are all steel belted radials and the 'steel belted' is generally left out of the description. However there was a 10yr or so period where non belted radials were common. Grew up on country roads in Australia, and it wasn't unknown to crack a tyre going out in the morning, change it and travel 60 miles to have it replaced, return home and crack a pair on the way home. Recall that my father established a record with the only tyre shop in the area, purchased one tyre and had it replaced 8 times under warranty during the 12 months of the warranty period. Dealer and manufacturer did stand by their warranty though.

    I drove truck 38 years and had a few of these type of defects surface over the decades-NOW THIS IS FUNNY-Let me explain. This is old school back in the days of tubes. I noticed a good size bulge on the drivers side outside tire on axle 5 at a rest area as I was checking the rig over before I got back on the road. Ok-this is not good? I need to get this sucker to the nearest truck stop and get my spare on. So away I go at highway speed keeping a eye 👁 on it in the mirror cause it’s right there on my side of the truck-no sweat. Ok this is going to work out, only about 5 miles to the truck stop---WTF? Just like that the side wall split open about 2 to 3 inches and the tube emerged in the almost exact size of a basketball 🏀? What the hell? Back off the speed dummy! There’s big black basketball going round and round on the outside of that tire and it can blow anytime? This takes place in the slow/truck lane of 3 lanes on our side of the highway. Then I realize WoW- nobody is passing? I had it backed down to about 40 mph to limp it to the truck stop. 3 lanes of traffic behind me afraid to pass and rightfully so. It holds together as I’m turning into the truck stop I see people pointing and laughing as I approach the tire shop. This happened early in my career and as a bunch of us stood around this thing-at a very respectful distance-the old tire guy and the veteran drivers were all commenting that this was the first time they had ever seen this happen with a failed sidewall? We all agreed and I’m sure most of you will also that even with more modern tubeless truck tires whether there new or recaps that they EXPLODE and spread rubber chunks all over the highway when they fail. I certainly had my share of those also.

    Why not get an inner tube and put that in the tire? The bulge would not be there anymore, because all the air would be in the tube. Yes, the rubber would still be separated at that point, but the tire would still be serviceable, at the very least as a spare.

    • @MrDfbwa
      @MrDfbwa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CT_Taylor Interesting comment. In the past there were car/truck tires that required tubes, and I believe the old split rims also required tubes. My question is why are they not recommended for highway use now? I would think that tubes actually make the tire stronger. Just trying to learn.

    • @CT_Taylor
      @CT_Taylor 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrDfbwa I worked at a tire shop. They wouldnt touch tires with tubes and refused to put tubes in tires. Apparently its an insurance liability thing, because a tires construction is really good and strong, but a tube isn't. I dont personally see the issue whatsoever, but its more so insurance companies refusing to cover shops for tubes. They do it for various other things. But when you think about it, a car tire doesn't need a tube unless its punctured or has a break of some kind, and I think the idea is that if it can be plugged or patched(simple puncture), its affected the integrity of the tire.

    • @MrDfbwa
      @MrDfbwa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CT_Taylor Thanks for the info. I don't know why it would be a liability thing, but insurance companies march to the beat of their own drummer I suppose. I wonder if the same applies to antique cars that had nothing but tubed tires? Are the replica antique tires now tubeless as well? Didn't mean for this thread to go on and on, but I am always curious about what some people consider odd things.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've ran tubes in a few sets of radial tubless tires. First was for some of bead sealing rubber being torn away from demounting(bought used tires) so there was slight air leaking at the beads. They claim it heats up the tire due to the friction from the tube scuffing the inner tire but I never had an issue and I monitored it really well for years. The second was for a sidewall puncture. I patched it with a extremely thick sidewall patch and then put a tube in. I drove it for about 6 months and it just blew out one day. The tube pushed it's way through the patch and sidewall. Once those nylon threads are cut you really have destroyed the tire. It's probably safer to run a dry rotted tire with a tube than one with damaged nylon cords.

    Interesting. I'd took my car to get my front passenger side tire fixed. Pepboys. The giy calls mr to the car repair area, stating that the driver took the wrong tire off. But noticed on the wrong tire a cut and bubble. There was no bubble there before I'd brought it in
    However. When he'd inflated the tire. The bubble appeared out of no where. He didn't show me the bubble before he'd put in air inside. But he'd made sure to put air inside where the bubble appearef out of the blue while I was watching. Is it possible for shady.mechanics to create these conditions?

    • @sixtyfiveford

      You have to hit a pot hole, curb etc really hard to have this happen. It would be near impossible to do by hand.

  • @exiledbantuking
    @exiledbantuking 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder if you get syringe and some industrial rubber cement then inject the bubble then use a hand vise to hold it for 24 hours ! Then reinflate

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cords are what give the tire strength and keep the tire from expanding like a balloon. So it would seal and hold but you would eventually get a bubble from the rubber stretching where the cords are broken. It sounds crude, but your best bet would be to physically sew the area and then add unvulcanized rubber to the area and vulcanize it.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the cords weren't cut then yes. However if the cords are cut the tire has lost all integrity in this area. A patch will hold for a while and then it will slowly push out and blow. The little nylon cords are the only thing keeping a tire from becoming an overblown balloon.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's impossible to tell without thorough examination. However, if you have a decent size bulge on the side of the tire you have separation and the tire is not savable. You also likely have broken cords. There is no glue that will hold.

      My understanding is that sidewalls flex so much under use that they cannot be repaired.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've patched sidewall punchers before but they always blow out the patch or plug. Once the cords get ripped there is nothing holding the tire together besides stretchy rubber. I've even patched and then installed tubes(tube finds it's way out).

He said it was too close to the side walls...so we put a tube in it to get the summer out of the tire. I threw a tube in a large truck tire 35x12.50 years ago. The tube pushed it's was through the super thick patch and right out the tiny hole. I was only driving 20mph and it flattened in 2 seconds. Once those cords are ripped there's really nothing holding the tire together. The tires for this car are cheap at around $25 delivered from Amazon. BUT, I'm cheap and there will probably be more tubes in my future....
