Hello. Yes! That is what is mind boggling. I think he had only been playing bass a few years as he started playing guitar when he was 16 and then switched after a bit. That isn't much time to get THAT good. He is a stellar has player!
Glad to see Duran Duran finally getting respect as musicians since most people wrote them off as just a pretty boy band for teenage girls. They were much more than that. They have some interesting tunes.

Rio album, 1982. John was born 20 June 1960, so he was, even younger when writing the bass lines (but let's not split hairs).
It's phenomenal! He's awesome. He was even younger when he came up with the bass lines for the self-titled,
      Duran Duran, album songs (1981).
Suffice it to say, he was born to be a bass player.

    • @robbelliii
      @robbelliii หลายเดือนก่อน

What is wild is he originally played guitar. So let’s just say he was 16 when he started playing bass. That means he wrote all these lines when he had only five or six years experience on bass.

I play bass myself, and this guy is absolutely terrific, as he makes it all look very easy.
Most of John Taylor's bass lines were very intricate, and complex and he is far better on bass than most people realise.
A lot of his bass lines were the driving force behind most of Duran Durans songs.
The rest of the band are great musicians, and are very far removed from the teenybop tag that they used to be seen as.
Total respect to kristian and John Taylor.🙏

I found the music interesting and full of energy, but the pretty-boy appearance of the men put me off a bit. I'm glad I'm a lot older now and can just appreciate the outstanding musicianship and skill and creativity. Back then I got into Rush and The Police as well, so I've always loved a good bassist! The Rush song "Marathon" from Power Windows has a lead bass line that I thought of when I re-listened to Rio's title song the other day. Gotta love it!

The influences of Bernard Edwards and his groove are clear and strong.
The bass line from "Last Chance On The Stairway" is simply awesome!
Let's just say that it was this groove that characterized Duran Duran's first sound, gave body and structure to their songs and led them to success.
The collaboration with Chic, in a certain way, continued with the work on the production and guitars of Nile Rogers on the album Notorious.

I never realized how technical John Taylor bass was .But watching you I can see it.I always thought bass drove DURAN DURAN songs. You play awesome!!!

I swear, for pop music, John Taylor is such an underrated bass player. Great job on this btw. I love taking out my bass and playing along with Duran songs! JT always has some of the best and most fun bass lines.

With all due respect, if you search for Best Bassist polls and surveys online, you'll find quite a few have him AT or near the top, and justifiably so. I'm partial to Geddy Lee, myself, but I'll be damned if Taylor doesn't have an outstanding style of his own. And it is a lot of fun to listen to and follow along. I'm happy to have rediscovered Taylor and DD after so many years.

I assume this video appeared in my recommendations because I saw JT's Rio video on facebook the other day and I've been relearning Rio as it turns out I've been playing it wrong for years.
I love how much control you have over the open A and D strings in the chorus part. I usually fret the A and D as it's easier to control the note length and keep it muted/staccato. I thing the original recording is open strings and I'll persevere with playing it like that. It removes the fret 2-5 stretch needed as well.
What's the rest of your signal chain and have you got some drive on the tone? There's a really nice grit that comes through when you dig in, that could just be the set up.
Now to watch the rest of your video, I'm looking forward to the fretless Wal.

Same for me....saw JT’s lockdown video and now I am reliving the 80’s. To be honest I had know idea how good the bass playing was in Duran Duran. The poster of this video should be very proud.

This is how me and my brother started out on play bass...we'd play along to our favorite bassists like JT and Geddy Lee.
    Although this is just PERFECTION!!!

Kudos, mate. Love the Aria and the Wal fretless, really nice job. I would say that JT didn't tend to slap the low notes when popping the octaves. I only mention it because I have tried to emulate his ability to pluck and pop and struggled. Could be wrong, and it's not a criticism of your playing, just an observation.

Stumbled across this and blown away at how good this Kristian Dunn is. Never heard of El Ten Eleven before but I'll be looking them up as soon as I'm done here. Always loved John Taylor's bass playing and it's amazing to have a front row seat here to see how it's done. I'd like to say you make it look easy but it still looks incredibly hard. Lol. Well done though and thank you for posting this. Very, very cool. The riff in "Last Chance on the Stairway" is insane.

I first learned to play these songs around 1984 when I got my first bass. Never was I ever this good at them. Also, it's great to see various bassists interpretations of all the little fills and bits of character that permeate all these songs. So, from a guy that's put Duran Duran at the top of my favorite bands ever since 1981: kudos, dude.
