I don’t believe anyone who knew BS from baked beans underrated JT, especially bassists. (Even us hardcore metal heads jaws dropped)
      However,
I absolutely believe the band as a whole were vastly disregarded and underrated as musicians.

I’ve always thought regardless of genre that John Taylor is one of the the Funkiest most Artistic bassists of All Time. Highly Underrated and often overlooked because most folks just see D2 as a “pop” band and don’t actually dive into what a Great Musician And Truly Influential John really is.

He is! He's the only bass influence of mine from any of the "pop groups". Yes Duran Duran were pop that also mixed alot of disco dance groove. He can really play! Plus I got a black Aria bass similar to his coming to my doorstep any day. I'm gonna learn to play Girls On Film on it when I get it. Duran Duran play 2 of my fav songs from the 80's....Girls On Film and Hungry Like A Wolf. Well scratch that, there's 2 bassist that are my heroes from 2 "pop bands".....Duran Duran and John Deacon from Queen. I know Queen is Classic Rock, but their 80's stuff is as pop band as it gets too. Another One Bites The Dust is both Classic Rock as well as one of the biggest hits of the 80's being it was recorded in 1980 and not to mention The Junk Yard Dog in the 80's using it as his theme song. So my 2 bass heroes from 2 80's pop bands are John Deacon and John Taylor! Everyone else are just session musicians to me. Duran Duran and Queen were 2 legit bands plus 2 of my fav bands. The Clash were border line pop to me being they broke through with alot of 80's pop influence but they will always be Punk to me that experimented. Aka Paul Siminon

@@val13c59 The point was that he's still just lumped into the "Duran Duran are just an 80s band" category by a LOT of people and musicians alike. There's still a ton that do not give him the respect that he deserves. I'm sorry that you can't see that. I see it all the time. So yes, still extremely under-rated whether you like the term or not.

JT's bass playing is worth a watch/listen here. The guy is fucking phenomenal, and his bass parts usually carried the music and/or gave it something extra. I don't think most 80s stuff is worth listening to, but DD (and specifically, John's playing) is an exception.

IMHO, John Taylor's bass in many of Duran Duran's songs... IS the lead guitar. I didn't know much at all about music or the true art that went into the actual playing of instruments in 1982 when I first started hearing their music (I was 12 and 13 years old)... but I was INSTANTLY drawn to the bass lines of John Taylor. I can't remember the first song I heard on the radio, I think it was "Hungry like the wolf", but I do remember the very first music video I saw... "Is there something I should know". In that song, at first all I could hear was Andy's fantastic lead guitar's haunting riffs, but the more I listened, John's bass rose to the top as the song progressed. When I finally purchased the Album "Rio", John became, and still remains to this day, my favorite Bass player of all time.

Another way one of my professors told me when playing staccato (at least with fingers) is to use your picking hand to also mute. It's lees of a technique thing and more of a sound quality thing as muting with your fretting hand can cause some fret buzz which can sound off when you're in the mix.

Hey, that's really interesting and cool!
I think of something like Rio, and when I first heard it back in the day, the first thing I noticed although not consciously was that bass playing. It added so much interest.
And Duran music is so often built on this funky sort of rhythm of John and Roger over which Nick soars in spacey ways and Simon adds such fearless melodies. Quite a combination.
But I suppose the point might be, the Beatles also had a superb rhythm "section" that I don't think many people understand, this being the earlier stuff like pre-Sgt. Pepper. Just Paul and Ringo and John created all this foot-stomping underlayment over which Paul or John or George -- whoever was doing the melody -- could just climb into the sky.

Thank you so much! JT is the best. Could you do a video on Nick Oliveri in the future? His time in Queens of the Stone Age (Albums: Rated R and Songs for the Deaf) produced some of the most innovative bass playing ever! Especially on the song Know One Knows.

You know, it's funny. I didn't think many would catch the scale in SKIN TRADE. It's one of my favorite parts of the song. Just that little scale.

a good right hand technique is paramount...if you can master that you could darn well play anything.. everything else becomes much easier. Compression also helps you sound a bit cleaner.
