HI all! Please enjoy my updated videos of Last Chance on the Stairway. Performance - th-cam.com/video/_wjjCEIZdQU/w-d-xo.html Lesson - th-cam.com/video/S6oqSSBljcM/w-d-xo.html
Indeed, this video is always refreshing to watch. My reaction may be due to its smooth flow from the slow demonstration of individual notes into the final rendition that gives non-musical viewers such as myself a whole new insight on the bass line in the song.
Absolutely the BEST DD song in my opinion. The bass line is quite varied and the ghost notes are a John specialty. Zuma, you NAILED it!! Keep up the great work.
Spot ON! I take no shame whatsoever saying Duran Duran's Rio album is imo, one of the top 10 albums ever. When I first heard John Taylor, my mind didn't say "boy band", it said "who the heck is that great bass player?!"
Thank you Zuma!! Don't know how many times I checked to see if someone posted this song on YT! I'm no musician but it's a real treat to see...Keep on posting!
Love this song! I play guitar, and just bought my first bass. I always loved John Taylor bass playing, and thanks to your lesson, now I can play it.... Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
zuma ... i listened to this song so often when i was young .. i admired jt so much .. it makes me smile to see how you play the bass man ... would love to do it like you ... great
I always came here ...I´m from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil .... and all the time put your video to play without audio , only to give you hours of view on youtube... I hope everybody can do this... you´re de best. When not working... full volume....
Mr. Zuma. I have "favorited" all your bass lessons. I really enjoy hearing the isolated bass from all these great D2 songs. Will you have time to do any more? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to hear more of your great bass. Thanks again. Mark in California.
Thank You and thanks for watching, however, please watch my updated set! th-cam.com/video/_wjjCEIZdQU/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/S6oqSSBljcM/w-d-xo.html
AMAZING!!! another great song performance of zuma! Gosh, I love that bass sound dammit! But please don't hide your other hand!it's part of the fun of watching it! Thank you!
Fascinating! Great to highlight just how complex the bass-line is on that song and how underrated John Taylor is as a bass player - he's NOT just a pretty face!
Great work there, am so trying to learn but its hard but great bass line to learn, always wondered how ghost notes work too, now how about the another glorious bass line off that album - Hold Back The Rain? love to see that!
@mrlee192 - A ghost note is created by striking the string normally with your plucking/picking hand but muting it with your fretting hand. It should sound like a percussive thud or maybe a little sharper if you are using a pick. It's basically selective muting if you want to look at it that way. It brings the funk and moves a piece along quite nicely. You probably already do it subconsciously.
Give him a break, man. This is exactly what I was looking for, so obviously it's labelled clearly enough. It does say "bass lesson" after all. That's what it is. And as usual, he did a great job.
The more I listen and play this bass line in particular, the more I feel as though Geddy Lee could have written it. JT and GL are my major influences on bass and music that features synthesizers in their sound. I often wonder if they ever checked out each others music, that would be kinda cool to know ... :) Also Zuma, you really inspire me to keep getting more verse in my chops. Thanks man.
@blackworm27 - no problem...I took the song in ProTools and looped these parts and you are absolutely right, those two notes should be a half step lower. I will adjust the video info and possibly redo this or at least post a video response. Thanks! A combination of playing it the wrong way forever and ear fatigue when I'm trying to relearn these lines is not a good combo!
Thanks for Zumaz!I'm planning a trip this summer to Canada so I think I will get one when I'm there. You know with the euro exchange rate I can get a pretty good bass for nnot that much. By the way you are amazing with the bass! I would like to learn some Duran songs, there my all time favourite band. Sould I get a bass with passive pickups or active ones? Thank Again Zumaz! Really appreciate your advice. David
@zumazmusic Thank you. I too appreciate being corrected (like what your video did for me for one B note in the chorus of Last Chance on the Stairway - thanks for posting!).
Another perfect job! OK if anybody could answer this it would be you. How do you rank JT as a bass player? I mean on those first two albums he sounded like a seasoned pro and he couldn't have been over 22 and had been playing bass only a few years from what I hear. Pretty classic stuff for such a "rookie!" IMO. Would like to hear your opinion of him and what some of your favorite points of his playing are. Thank You for these videos.
Awesome! Great job, damn, I never realized how fast and difficult to play the bass line is for this song. I love this song and have listened to it for years. (What are ghost notes?)
What a great helpful post. Thanks! I do have a question though. I absolutely love that fat tone you got going. I've been trying to get my G&L Jazz bass to come close to your tone but no luck (even with a 10-Band EQ pedal, Compression or my two Bass DI's). Suggestions? Thanks! :)
@mrlee192 - Simply a note that you play but don't fully fret out. Sometimes refferred to as mutes. If you get into slap bass you'll deal with them a lot.
Yo Zuma you ae the shiznik! You Sound exactly as the record. Post some more lessons. Hopefully I can see you perform Lonely in your nightmare. Keep on Rockin Kid.
The "ghosties" are when you play a note with your right (or picking) hand and mute it with your left (or fretting) hand. It's sounds like a tick or a thud. It's a must-know for funky bass playing in my opinion.
Hi Zumaz! I finally got a bass(it's a musicman reproduction and it was only 150 euros) and the notes of this song on it,well kind of (my first song on bass! Thanks to you.) But there's is no way for the ghost notes to sound right plus I need to speed up a lot more. I guess practice is the word, but I just wanted to say thanks for this video buddy! Ciao!
Hi, great cover! I've been searching online for any info on the nut width on the SB-1000RIB reissue I'm thinking of getting but haven't found anything. How's the neck on yours? I'm into jazz bass kind of narrow necks, but yours seems to be much wider with generous string spacing. How would you compare it to a jazz profile of 1.50"?
I have heard it all when it comes to John. My opinion? He's my hero, a huge influence on me, and he was a great bass player all the way back to his early 20's. I have live footage of them in 1981 if anyone needs proof!
Zuma...Im mainly a drummer, but it appears to me as if the verses on this song are the hardest DD bass parts to play...is that true? If not, which one would u say is most difficult overall and/or has the hardest riff??

well im sitting here with my aria... if your get a chance or have not already check out SIT strings im using the ultra bright steel ones and you can REALLY hear the aria with them....its funny...all these years ive known you I can always refer to these videos.. hope you are doing ok my friend and enjoying your summer..im ok..things are ok.. working on getting a better am..guy in MI is building me a fretless.. im kinda interested in a PJ bass...im assuming its the best of both bass's the arias is great but its not suitable for everything because I think its geared towards mids and highs.. but im so grateful to have it back at least.
PS have you ever though of covering mark egan when he did arcadias the promise?? hes on my facebook and is just an amazingly nice man...like I said my fretless is coming..and this guy KNOWS his stuff..i was never really happy with the fretless bass's ive had in the past...but ive seen videos of the things he does and some good players and its like Eagan meets pallidino!

15 years later, this is still the best rendition of one of JT's best bass lines. Awesome job dude!!

Simply smooth and purely awesome, well done Sir!
Oh man, this is soo good! One of my favorite DD songs ever and a wicked bass groove. Havin' tons of fun playing this, thanks!
Magnificent bass line, zuma you are what we say in Italy "un manico" - great string touch, very precise rithm, simply a great player.
