- My project Focus RS keeps on growing, but what about installing a sequential gearbox next?! On a visit to Mountune after a service and a few updates following the 500hp upgrade, I take their development car out for a test drive, now fitted with the Quaife gearbox. I think this is going to have to be coming up next!
The car went to Mountune for a number of things including the first year service, some updates following the miles on the car and new development work, and the installation of the Pro Alloy header tank. While we're in we also fit the TUFSKINZ interior trim pieces to add even more carbon look to the inside.
However, they also invited me to take another quick look at their development car that since I last drove it has had the Quaife 5 speed sequential gearbox installed. With a setup like this it's a different mentality to drive, but could not feel closer to a racecar setup on the road, and in turn would pull even more power and performance out of it.
What do you think then, should this be my next modification, fitting the sequential gearbox to my Focus RS?

Test driving Mountune's development Focus RS that's now fitted with a Quaife sequential gearbox has me incredibly tempted to do the same! What do you think, should this be the next upgrade to my project car?

I've done the Ring with it and intend to do so many more times later in the year after my US tour

Since you have another RS that is pretty much untouched I think you should definitely get a sequential in the project car

Last car with sequential gearbox you drove was a CLK GTR.
That's true but with paddles not with a central stick so quite a different feel, although it was an epic night I'll never forget!

The noise a sequential gearbox makes is dreamy, it'll sound like your car is twincharged 😆😆
adding a touch of red onto the hood like you described would help balance it a lot! Also that was a really tasteful wide body on the demo car. If you were to replicate the exposed carbon on your car it would be the cherry on top that brings everything together, definitely should do! Awesome build btw

I drove a Focus RS back in 2000 on the Autobahn and it was absolutely mad then. Can't imagine these years later how all the improvements would have made that experience even more visceral.

We just want you to paint the bonnet/hood red and leave the vents carbon.
There are more body pieces to come so all the paint work will be done at the same time
Leave the bonnet black and bring back the gold wheels.

Omg what have i just see 💙 Well, I felt in love with sequential gearboxes since I saw the first DTM touring racecar on TV when I was a child. When Ibought my first car, first thing I've learned was how to "heel & toe". 24 Years passed and I'm still excited driving like this. What a shame I would never afford a gadget like this one.

Dumb question - Is the clutch pedal still used when you have a Quaife sequential gearbox?
iirc only for first gear on sequential boxes
@@hxduck clutchless shifts are only for high rpm upshifts, if you downshift without the clutch the gearbox explodes

@@hxduck i don't know about the race spec sequentials, i think it's the same but i'm not sure
@@darth_pandino4265 it's all in the mapping. You can down shift without the clutch with a sequential, the issue is it can often unsettle the car especially in light cars like the 620r. The clutch can also be used in any gear so that its smoother on the road.
Seeing your Ford Focus RS I kinda want my own one. Maybe as a second car? I Think it would be an awesome daily driver.

But one thing, the blue part of the shifter (sequential) in the testing car should be Race Red in your Car!!!

The sequential box has a real touring car sound to it. Given how much of a project car the R.S then I say go for it.
It's going to send mega at full chat with the sequential box on a trackday.

The sequential whine sounds like a race car, love it. The new wings look great and would be great addition to the focus, maybe with wheel spacers for a wider stance!
Yes to sequential transmission. This might probably be your first car with this and it will add to your garage variety and differentiate between your other rs. This is an exclusive car in your collection for its different driving experience.
You have the means.. Hence you Should definitely consider it.

Nice to see the Focus back the Sequential gearbox seem very noisy and get old very quickly on a long drive

Car looks awesome! Just missed you actually by a day or so. Was at Mountune with my Mk3 RS for m400R upgrade, disks, pads and break lines and sports springs. Different car! Amazing 😁

Go for it! It sounds sick. Go with a quaffe with liberty straight cut gears they whine like a banshee at high rpm’s.

How much has this car cost you so far. It is interesting to see the amount of upgrades you are makings and plan to make to the Focus, but how is it funded?

Tim, Just a short mention for another minor change to your Red RS, the Ford Oval badges. You can change the colour of them by buying from DMB Graphics. I have white Mk 7.5 Fiesta Zetec S, great fun and economical too, and I bought some white and black Ford ovals. You get three - two for outside and one for the steering wheel. This would likely be the cheapest mod you make to your car. I would go for that sequential box too.
Sounds somewhere in between a lorry and a drift car with that gearbox at low speeds. I can't wait to see how the RS performs when it's finished.

I am glad you mentioned Topaz Skin, this car is so in need of a wrap or skin. Tim you've to do something special like Ken Block does, his Escort RS Cosworth V2 looks amazing.

Gated shifters are a vanity item, if you're actually tracking it, you'd want sequential

if there exits sequentials there are guarented dogbox gearboxes.Non syncronized .

That whining sound and feeling like a racecar is worth the money alone, that sound just pushes you to drive faster and faster :)
If it is reliable this could be a nice upgrade that probably nobody else has, its great that they off a sequential bos for a " normal" street car :)
It does make the car less practical and less easy to drive but I guess this RS is only for special drives or trackdays so it should be fine.

Those wider front fenders would look awesome on your car in the red with the black carbon fibre.🔥 It would really add to the aggressiveness of the car from the side where the is not much going on.
The sequential gearbox sounds like a tonne of fun btw. I don't like the blue and white though. Just my preference for black, with a bit of silver maybe.

You should watch car throttles video on the new Supra. They did a dyno run with a stock Supra and it did 376. The dyno guy told him that with better down pipes and a good exhaust it would push around 430 to 450. Downpipes and exhaust could be your first modification to your Supra.

Dude, definitely install the fenders and the shifter. It will look, sound and drive more menacingly. You will kick yourself if you don't.
Does that clutch pedal function since you dont need it when shifting gears ? Do you need when setting off ?
Definetely go for the Sequential one....unique experience...and test it on the track :)

I think it needs a revised block and head gasket design first before anything mate.
Such a nice car but some different alloys would look much better as would those wider front wings and not covering it in fake carbon fibre would be for the best. Sequential box would be good if you are doing lots of track days and racing but you don't seem to do that much.

Did you upgrade the turbo already? If so, what did you put in there?
For the performance: Yes! The better gearing and shorter shifts will improve the acceleration quite a bit.
Cost for road use: nah, 10k euro for the gearbox and a rebuild every 10k km’s or so. Not worth it if you’re not competing with the car.

Yes please fit the Quaife - it will be the best upgrade you have ever made it transforms the car and make sure you opt for the flat shift load cell too... :)

Bonnet question - is it Ventus Veloce? How did you get it to Europe - they do not ship outside US/Canada/Mexico?

You should of seen what we used to do to S1/S2 escorts back in the day. Sequential gearbox isnt crazy at all do it haha.
With a sequential do you only need the clutch for setting off in first? So, set off as normal, then just 'bang' it through the gears until you need to stop again, then back down to first and clutch in as normal?
Go with a CAE shifter. Mountunes box is still to new and I’ve looked into it for myself but feel like they need to have a better fit and finish. Also look into going widebody and better aero than you currently have. Thanks again for the vids 👊🏻🎥
