    Heads-up: If your 22 has the vinyl poptop cover, there are rows of snaps for it at the edges, each side, on the cabin trunk. These routinely catch shroud wire while raising the mast, and tug the mast right or left, or stop the lifting entirely, at exactly the wrong time. I've kept a stick to kick em loose, but it works to duct tape over them before raising.

    Very smooth... my Jaguar 22 (same as a C22 - built in the UK under license!) I use a length of 2"x2" timber with various eye bolts fitted at the ends for the attachment of stays, main sheet and a strap to secure it to the mast. I can use this when I need to lower the mast to shoot low bridges without removing the mainsail from the boom. Of course, I still have to drop the mainsail and remove the boom to lower the mast. Thanks for sharing - I can see some improvements which I can make to my system... fair winds

    Good video, thanks. By the way the pushpit is at the stern, pulpit at the bow.

    Just one (hopefully small) point as you have everything working well: you are pulling mast up, but there is a danger that hauling line will slip from your hand, and that could allow the mast to drop onto the support at the rear of the boat, possibly snapping in the process. Running the line through a fixed point with a jambing cleat to stop it running away would be a precaution. Its a heavy mast to come tumbling down.

      Hi, Michael. If you watch my other video on how I rig the boom, you'll see that I use a cam cleat for that exact reason, making it virtually impossible for the mast to fall.

    Hi Stingy Sailor, There are certainly a lot of mast raising systems reported on youtube. This reflects the concern for a potentially dangerous operation. Each boat is a bit different and many sailors are not as strong as you are in laterally stabilizing the mast. I plan to report soon on another slightly different method that my son devised for his boat. Regards.

    Interesting approach! I could not make out from your video specifically how you attached the boom to the mast to form a gin pole. What holds it in place, do you pin it in some way? My C22 is a 1986 would that change your system?

      Paul LeMenager If you watch my other video "Rigging the Catalina 22 Boom as a Gin Pole for Mast Stepping" at the link below, near the end at around 4:00, I show the angle bracket that I have bolted through the mast step. The tab pointing upward has a 1/4" hole through it to which I pin the gooseneck fitting. Then the boom rotates on that tab as the mast is raised. It isn't attached to the mast at all. This system could be adapted to work on almost any sailboat.

    Great video, thanks! If my Capri 22 doesn’t have the forward shrouds, how can I safely disconnect the forestay (furling jib) and reattach it to the bow without dropping the mast?

    • @stingysailor5677
      @stingysailor5677  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have a spinnaker halyard, attach it to the bow and harden it to hold the mast in place while you disconnect the forestay. If not, you might be able to carefully pull your mainsail halyard forward for the task. Just be careful about not chafing it or leading it over any sharp edges.

      @@stingysailor5677 thank you! I do have a spinny so was able to use that to disconnect the forestay for some adjustments.

    Hi Stingy! I have a Catalina 30 standard rig from 1983 and I am wondering if I dare to try this. I have a cradle/trailer and I would like to be free of those large boatyard bills. What do you think? -Larry-

    • @stingysailor5677

      I don't think it will work unless you modify the bottom of your mast and the tabernacle. They aren't designed to work as a hinge like the smaller Catalinas. And you would definitely want to rig some baby stays to hold the mast centered. With that much weight, if it started to veer off center, even two guys might not be able to stop it from falling. Having the boatyard hoist it is a lot safer. I guess that's the premium you have to pay for a bigger boat.

    great videos! why would you use this method over just using the main sheet like your other video?

    • @stingysailor5677
      @stingysailor5677  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aran Fifield I normally don't use this method, Aran, unless I'm stepping the mast in unusual conditions like in an unlevel area before launching or on the water when it's choppy and I want a some extra stability.

      If you have a heavier mast than this one, it may be awkward to man-handle it up at the stern, so it has to be lifted from the horizontal. If its horizontal on deck you need a gin pole to raise the line enough to lift the mast off the deck. With a gin pole, the loads are also lower, so you might manage the lift more easily.

      @@stingysailor5677 Always worth mentioning that done badly this is a very dangerous procedure. A moving boat, uneven surface and wind will cause the mast to move around. It needs every line to be in place and secure to stop the mast from swinging, dropping abruptly or even jumping out of the tabernacle. Its a process to be undertaken with all the due caution I saw in the video. A hard hat is an essential requirement, though. Plus stout gloves. Take care!!
