Red Foxx (Fred Sanford) and Lawanda Page (Aunt Ester) had a long history together as comedic actors, long before Sanford and Son was created. By this time, they already had a well-seasoned chemistry as co-stars. Their comedic timing together was impeccable.
Lamont works in the junk business. Denim was a work fabric before it became DESIGNER FASHION. lol. But there’s episodes, that he wears casual suits and other things. But, most definitely, denim jeans and denim outfits were huge in the 70s.
Denim was actually a cloth developed for miners out in the Old West. Levi Strauss, the maker of Levi's Jeans, is one of the oldest companies in the United States, being established in 1848.

I'm old enough to have seen this series when it was first aired. You're only scratching the surface of how funny they were together. Love your reaction Britt.
In real life Red Foxx (Fred Sanford) and Lawanda Page (Aunt Ester) were dear friends. It was Red Foxx who got Lawanda Page the role of Aunt Ester because they both had great comic timing!
I grew up in the 70’s and this show was really popular. Denim + denim was just fine back then and toward the end of the video, she was cleaning the carpet with a carpet sweeper/ carpet broom. They were used on flat rugs, (certainly not on deep or shag carpets). No electricity required, just elbow grease. 😊
As a Gen Xer, these tv shows are why we are the biggest shi talkers. We were also latchkey kids so if it was on tv there was no parents around to stop us from watching all of it 😂🤣

No way he's a preacher he recently did an interview on a channel called comedy hype talking about he didn't feel sorry for red foxx, he didn't give preacher vibes.

no he was mad because he felt slighted by redd when he quit the show without telling him that he had quit. redd never even went and told him himself. and yes lamont is a preacher and even considered being a priest before he got into acting because he was born catholic.

Yep, the Fred and Esther scenes are always gold. They were the perfect comic matchup. And that little girl (baby Esther).... "Let me tell ya something". I almost fell over. 🤣
I believe I recall that Fred's dislike of Esther stems from Esther's objections to Elizabeth marrying Fred because she didn't think he was good enough for her.
One of the best shows ever! Right with All in the family and Married with children, when we did not care about peoples feelings when it came to comedy.
Denim on denim was very popular back then. In fact, I wish I had my old denim jacket again. A turtleneck shirt and bell bottoms on the jeans make it perfect, and I would wear it proudly today.
Baby Aunt Esther, lol lol lol. I have fond memories of the show and I was a little kid watching it with my dad whom he loved it, along with Benny Hill on BBS. But you are cracking me up so much.
The episode where Fred was wondering about his wife's fidelity, the story was, he had been contacted by another man claiming his son was his and in the era before DNA tests Fred was trying to make sure Lamont was his.
As a white kid back in the 70's this was my favorite show. This show came on every Friday at 8:00 pm on NBC. You have to realize back then there were only 3 channels and chances were everyone was watching or had at least had seen the same shows. Most TV's didn't even have a remote so you didn't flip through the channels. Then I couldn't have imagined what we would have today it was science fiction stuff.
The clip about "dilly dally" is a classic episode. Fred gets a visit from an old friend and he claims to have slept with Fred's wife and that Lamont is his son and not Fred's. Obviously this stresses Fred. At the end of the episode Esther, Fred and the guy have a chat and the guy talks about how he snuck into Elizabeth's room while she was sleeping. He described which room it was only to find out that he had accidentally snuck into Esther's room to do the deed. Pure comedy when Fred finds out it was Esther who he got lucky with.
Back in the 70's, you always had to have a good come back line...lol!😂😊 When Fred would be going through a rough some situation on the show, (that he thought would bring on a heart attack) he would always air-talk to his wife Elizabeth. He'd tell her he was getting ready to come and join her.🙂
They actually grew up in the same neighborhood in St Louis.... Sanford & Son was one of the funniest shows ever ... Research Champipple ... Champagne and Ripple ... RIP Red Fox and LaWanda Paige ... LaWanda has some good comedy on U Tube.... They hilarious
Was it champagne? I know it was Sangria. Ripple with trash in the bottom. That is when Fred thought the hood was going to the wolves with his new neighbors! Great memories!
One funny show to me ..Esp when Fred would tap on the hidden drawer ... Grab a hand full of old reading glasses ... Put on 3 or 4 pair to read something .. He had me rolling in laughter ... TV and everything was better then .. Fred would eat these soft ass cupcakes for lunch nowadays
Sanford and Son is part of a great decade in the 70s, the 60s was real good as well, when men were men and women were women and the TV shows showed that especially in the comedy ones. We as a nation was still trying to hold on to Christian values and comedy was mostly clean. The musical intro song for this show is one of the most recognized in TV history.
Aunt Esther played by LaWanda Page. Was both a great dancer and a stand-up comedian you need to check out some of her stand up but make sure your kids aren't in the room
I've never noticed how many times Lamont wore denim. I just figured it was his work clothes that he wore out on the truck when gong places to pick up junk, collectibles, etc. But, he did wear 70s flowered shirts and other jackets also . They did show a picture of Elizabeth once. She was pretty.
Britt Sanford and son was so good in the 70s another TV show was one of my all time favorite TV shows was Good Times.Britt absolutely great video you did Ty
Old school vacuum cleaner was called a carpet sweeper. It had spinning brushes that turned when you pushed it. My grandmother had one. You used it between vacuuming days!
There is 100% a love there and especially off screen, they were like best friends. But they had perfect chemistry on tv. I am only 31, but my pops loved this show. I watched it with him all the time growing up.
I made the denim on denim mistake back in the early 2000's...I was in my 30's and it never occurred to me....I always wear blue jeans and I had seen a cool denim shirt I liked and I was a performing musician at the time. I wore it to my gig and someone called me Lamont Sanford.
This sitcom was an American copy of the original British show Steptoe and son with Albert Steptoe and his son Harold who were rag and bone men and rode around on a horse and cart collecting old cloths and furniture and junk.
There’s a video on TH-cam with Lawanda Page being interviewed. She was so soft spoken in real life. She tells the interviewer how Redd Foxx talked her into going for the role if Aunt Esther. He always stood up for her.

The exchanges between Fred and Esther were spectacular. All In The Family, Sanford And Son and Married With Children. You can't get better TV comedy than those shows.
Truly one of the funniest shows ever made. Fred's nickname for his son Lamont is "You Big Dummy" he uses it quit often if you watch the show. You should see those scenes as well.
Love Fred and Ester but it is so fun to watch along with Bri. She always makes me laugh and is such a kind pretty young lady. I an old fart who watched Sanford and Son on TV when it came out on TV. Love seeing new generations of people watching the shows I grew up watching.
To add to mervinmerencio6861's comment, some of us back then wore denim as a fashion. I wore a 'jean jacket' and pants a lot in the 1970s, sometimes similar shirts as Lamont. Hadn't noticed Lamont's 'fashion statement' until folks pointed it out, ha.
Redd Foxx and Lwanda Page (Aunt Ester) were two of the funniest comediens of their time. Look up some of their old recordings. Fair warning Lwanda could make a sailor blush in a hot second. She wasn't afraid to get raunchy. Their skits together on Sanford and Son were some of the best of the series.
Denim was just the style for men in the 70’s - nobody thought anything about it because it was very common. And they were usually semi bell bottoms and some kind of brown shoes or white sneakers.
Redd AKA Fred was an excellent standup comedian. He was a good friend of Malcolm X, preceded Richard Pryor, and ad lib insults was his specialty. There’s skits where he pulled people out of the audience to act with him. He was on the Flip Wilson show as a HECKLER!!!!! He was doing live tv off the top of his head comedy. Redd Foxx based Fred Sanford on his real life brother. I think his brother’s real name was Fred Sanford lol😅
LaWanda Page was a well known early female stand up comic and she really worked "blue" she could say some really filthy things that had people rolling on the floor.
Sanford & Son is another show from the genus Norman Lear, that’s why the writing is so good. Norman Lear also created All in the Family, the Jefferson’s, Good times, Maude, the facts of life…
Thanks for the great reaction. I remember watching this in syndication in the 80s. This viewer thinks there's something magical about tears of laughter. And you're RIGHT about Baby Esther! Redd Foxx was a top comic in his heyday. Please check out the cool and funky theme song, if you haven't already. It uses this great baritone harmonica (i think), and it always makes me smile.
Mrs.Britt, I loved Sanford and son, the Jeffersons, all in the family, and can't leave out "JJ DINOMITE" in good times !! Television used to be good, and keep reacting and smiling young lady, Ya did good with this one !!
That is baby Aunt Esther! I can't tell you how many times I've watched that little girl 😂 You should see it where a man does it like he's talking to her. You have to see Fred doing one of his fake heart attacks!
Lawanda Page was a burlesque dancer in her youth and was quite pretty. Redd Foxx befriended her and created the role of Aunt Esther just for her. They were very close friends.
This show , Sanford and Son , The Jefferson’s , All in the Family ( oh Archie Bunker ) The Carol Burnett show Mary Tyler Moore show,Mash, Happy Days (with the Fonz,Fonzie,) were absolutely must watch shows , of course we only had three channels to choose from, another one you might know is Good Times there was a character on there JJ who used to say dy-no-mite we had a lot of shows with emphasis on making their audience laugh course we had our dramas too Rockford files with James Garner as the private investigator, was one, mmm the dramas aren’t coming to mind as quickly as the funny stuff Dallas , Falcon crest , Knots Landing, they were like nighttime soaps, I believe those came about at the end of the 70’s going into the 80’s and about the same timeframe, if I’m not mistaken as Charlie’s Angels and Threes company --oh and I have to put in for very very honorable mention for me for a couple of shows that really got to my heart and those would be Little House On The Prairie ❤❤and The Waltons ❤❤- GREAT T.V. these two programs kept God at the center of their shows and for me that’s what wins the day. We are so missing that these days and need it back desperately.
There were a couple episodes where they helped each other out. The most memorable was when Esther and Woody were going thru the adoption process and Fred gave a rousing recommendation for Esther and praised her highly.
The "vacuum" is actually what they call a "rug roller." For normal carpet, the pickup roller brushes actually have stiff bristles and can be cleaned. I know this because I actually own one of them. And, depending on what restaurant you eat out at, like Bob Evans, during a shift, waiters or waitresses may use one to pick up light dirt after a party of people leave the table being swept. But it is a pure mechanical sweeper -- no electricity needed!
Keep watching. Can’t wait until you meet Fred’s friend Grady. I had a feeling when you were talking about the little girl meme that that was the one. First time I saw it I must have watched it ten times in a row and then sent it to everyone I know. 👍🏼😂
I am only guessing but I think Lamont's Denim is for moving junk around during the day when he is working. They do show him at night in episodes appearing a little more dapper than his usual Canadian groom look.
My friends wore denim with denim but it had to contrast. No trying to match unless it was sold together as an outfit. There were denim suits and outfits for girls that matched.
Redd Foxx & Lawanda Page were dear friends in real life. Ms. Page was a WELL established comedienne in her own right having released multiple comedy albums (that era's version of Netflix specials) and being a regular on Dean Martin's Celebrity Roasts...! THOSE you should definitely check out...😉😅
I believe I was about 9-10 years old when I started watching Sanford and Son. Donna was Fred’s gf. Lamont did wear a lot of what was called “leisure suits” and yes denim was big at the time. Raroll was one of Lamont’s friends and of course they all got picked on by Fred. If you see more episodes Fred’s friends are in there and one of them was a child actor from the Little Rascals, Stimey. Aunt Ester’s favorite phrases were Fisheyed Fool and Sucka. Red Fox had a foul mouth stand up routine. In real life he had a pension for Asian women. I believe I was in my mid 20s in Vegas when I road the elevator with him, Slappy White and their wives. I’m Asian and this casino catered to the Hawaiian/Asian people. There’s a episode where Lamont is fighting a traffic ticket and Fred says the “N word“ it was quite shocking. Red was a trendsetter/groundbreaker for the black comedians. The theme song has been my ringtone too. All hail Red Fox.
This was one of the best shows on TV in my time. It takes place in Watts, CA; and Fred is just rough with everybody. But Esther v. Fred made the show. Check out scenes when the cops come over. 😂😂😂
Red Foxx (Fred Sanford) and Lawanda Page (Aunt Ester) had a long history together as comedic actors, long before Sanford and Son was created. By this time, they already had a well-seasoned chemistry as co-stars. Their comedic timing together was impeccable.
They definitely had that connection that only good friends could have.
I loved that I grew up in a time where I could watch Fred Sanford, Archie Bunker and George Jefferson every day.

That's a carpet sweeper. No motor, it just has brushes that turn when you push it, for a quick carpet cleaning:)
Oh cool!
Oh loved that baby aunt Ester!
This show , Sanford and Son , The Jefferson’s , All in the Family ( oh Archie Bunker ) The Carol Burnett show Mary Tyler Moore show,Mash, Happy Days (with the Fonz,Fonzie,) were absolutely must watch shows , of course we only had three channels to choose from, another one you might know is Good Times there was a character on there JJ who used to say dy-no-mite we had a lot of shows with emphasis on making their audience laugh course we had our dramas too Rockford files with James Garner as the private investigator, was one, mmm the dramas aren’t coming to mind as quickly as the funny stuff Dallas , Falcon crest , Knots Landing, they were like nighttime soaps, I believe those came about at the end of the 70’s going into the 80’s and about the same timeframe, if I’m not mistaken as Charlie’s Angels and Threes company --oh and I have to put in for very very honorable
mention for me for a couple of shows that really got to my heart and those would be Little House On The Prairie ❤❤and The Waltons ❤❤- GREAT T.V. these two programs kept God at the center of their shows and for me that’s what wins the day. We are so missing that these days and need it back desperately.
Donna was pure class
They sell the box set at Walmart. I used to watch this with my dad. It was my favorite when I was a kid. I think it was my dad's favorite too.
There were a couple episodes where they helped each other out. The most memorable was when Esther and Woody were going thru the adoption process and Fred gave a rousing recommendation for Esther and praised her highly.
This show was freaking awesome, never fly today, to much PC going on these days, loved me some Fred Sanford 🤣
I thought of that same little girl at the same time.... amazing!
Red Foxx was a stand up comedian for ages. That's why he is so quick.
Best aunt Esther skit is when Fred snatches that wig. 😂
I am only guessing but I think Lamont's Denim is for moving junk around during the day when he is working. They do show him at night in episodes appearing a little more dapper than his usual Canadian groom look.
Redd Foxx had similar banter in Harlem nights with dela Reese and Eddie Murphy. His stand up was very adult
To answer your question about the Tin Man from The Wiz, that was Nipsey Russell who played him.
THOSE you should definitely check out...😉😅
It a great show I enjoyed. It as kid. I’m glad you get to see it
I believe I was about 9-10 years old when I started watching Sanford and Son. All hail Red Fox.
much luck to you girl, great success going forward . Lamont was always "Styling"
Most definitely!
This was one of the best shows on TV in my time. It takes place in Watts, CA; and Fred is just rough with everybody. But Esther v. Fred made the show. Check out scenes when the cops come over. 😂😂😂
Loved this show growing up.
