LaWanda Page, the actress who played Aunt Esther, was a friend of Redd Foxx since they were both in Elementary School.
She was 2 years older than him, and they both grew up to be successful comedians and actors. LaWanda had many successful comedy albums and was a regular on the comedy circuit. When Redd Foxx got his show, he called his old friend and got her the job of Aunt Esther.

Not only that she was also a dancer nick named: "The Bronze Goddess of Fire" or "LaWanda, the Flame Goddess", Page entertained in small St. Louis nightclubs. Plus she got the job with a small hiccup. One of the show's producers told Foxx that Page must be fired before the show could begin taping. Foxx insisted that Page keep the part, threatening to abandon the show if Page were fired.

I'm a 63 year old white guy and I was raised watching Sanford and Son in the 70's and loved it. Aunt Esther made that show what it was. Without her that show would not have been the success that it was.

Redd Fox was a famous comedian who told dirty jokes on stage and in his records. But he was so good that he proved that comedy doesn't have to be full of bad words to be funny.

It's amazing what our actors can get away with when they have just the right tone or attitude or delivery with their words...also a forgiving audience. 😊 Charlie Bunker and Fred G. Sanford had gifts that we could laugh with. I grew up watching them on TV and even love it more now watching other people, like you, experiencing some extreme bold script writing with gut-busting laughter back in the 70s and 80s.

In this series, Fred's wife, Elizabeth, died some time before the series began. Esther was Elizabeth's sister, and though Esther and Elizabeth loved each other dearly, Esther never approved of Fred. She felt that Elizabeth could do much better than him. Because of that, Fred didn't like her and would throw insults at her every chance he got. As has been stated in other comments, the two actors who played the characters were very close friends.

This sort of family relationship is quite durable, Fred and Esther may engage in this merry war of words, but let anyone outside the family be so bold, and there would be instant consequences and repercussions!

There is one funny line that a lot of people may have missed. It's when Aunt Esther says about having a baby "I'm going to be a mother." And Fred opens his mouth to say something and Aunt Esther says "Watch it, sucker!" I loved this but not everyone may have picked up on the joke. Here is the way I wished they had done this exchange. It would be Aunt Ester saying "I'm going to be a mother" and to make sure nobody missed what was implied they should have immediately had Fred say MOST of the implied line OUT LOUD which would have been "You already are a..." and THEN Aunt Ester jumps in with "Watch it, sucker!"

I loved this show as a kid and find it even funnier as an adult! American television today is SO bad. None of the "conedies" are funny. The stories are old and tired just like the jokes and the writers are political hacjs with no talent and no comedy, and their worldview is narrow, suspicious, paranoid, mean, vicious, closed-minded and worse aggressive and dogmatic in the what possible way. They beat their x audience over the head with woje Baker the overwhelming majority of us wholly reject and children that they are, interesting of learning the lesson and chasing things up, they lecture us, puroosrly insultour intelligence, condescend to us and threaten. There is almost nothing original in American entertainment anymore. It's why i don't pay for any television service anymore and haven't since it became necessary Shows like this are so hilarious and fun to watch because they were edgy without being obnoxious. They were a product of the era but poked fun at the worst parts of our society at the time while paving a way to improve it. No agendas, no political posturing. Yes they made commentary on society but with hilarious comedy, funny stories, and good fun unlike today's collapsing woke nonsense. Wokism attempted to kill comedy with its pathological corrosion of universal human values shared by all human beings everywhere in the world. These shows are a balm and as you experienced, it's laughter that's good for the soul. Great medicine and exactly what our world needs again! Many of us who grew on shows like this refuse to allow workism to win. Life must have laughter in it. I have the DVDs and/or BluRays for all my favorite childhood shows like this one and when i get fed up with the world's crap, I shut it out, put on these shows and remember a joyius, fun, time when laughter was appreciated, comedy was nit used as a political weapon against people, and when people were more mature both emotionally and cognitively and knew what to take seriously and knew what was just for fun. With Wokism nothing is funny and everything is an insult. Also these shows didn't have to be vulgar and filthy, as too many shows are now. In fact tiday their shows are generally, as the worldview is specifically, miserable, pathetic, and morally and ethically babkrupt as are the people who buy into that crap. For me and my generation ( Gen X), we will not surrender to wokeness, and thank God it's collapsing. We knew then what the woke crowd needs to understand today ... That what you can laugh at can't hurt you. What you can innocently poke fun at can't insult or harm you. We knew that back then. So, we choose the live not in fear and with hurt feelings like emotionally immature children with bad attitudes, profound ignorance, and no ounce of common sense or basic human decency. No, today we are counter-culture, and very happy to be so. We're sharing what we grew with because it was fun, funny, and valuably meaningful in the best of ways without being humorless and dogmatic inthe worst kind of way. These shiws reflect a time when we were very united and getting along. With shows like this, The Golden Girls, The Cosby Show, 227, Amen, Good Times, and others from the 70's and 80's we were a better society than today. That's what we hope to restore... Maturity, fun, wisdom, unity, laughter, shared common dreams, and celebrations of BOTH our samenesses AND differences.
