In 2008 the US Supreme Court put and end to that argument and ruled 5-4 that the right to bear arms is an individual Right regardless of membership to a militias.
There should be no argument about our rights at all. That was all settled with the US Constitution in the late 1700's. That document guaranteed that our Creator given rights would not be infringed on, Period !! All these tyrants that get up and spew their lies and want to infringe on our rights would /should be in prison if our law officers would do what they swore an oath to. They are criminals and are guilty of treason to the people of this land.

When the constitution was written, a militia was made up of citizens that would leave their everyday lives and form groups to fight in a war if needed. Since the militias were made up of regular citizens, the founders of the constitution wanted them to have guns to bring with them to the battle. The main purpose of the 2nd amendment was to allow the people to protect themselves from a tyrannical government. It is as important today as it was then.
It was also to protect themselves from other people overthrowing the government and installing their own. Look at Cuba, the first thing Castro did once he usurped control of the country was to disarm the population and they've never been able to free themselves since.
Exactly, a well regulated militia was citizens which is what they use to help win the war against the British. It doesn’t say soldiers, it says militia. 👍

A well regulated militia was needed to defend the county against attack because the founders didn't want a standing army. It definitely was not intended to promote attacking the US

I just love Archie!!!! He was such a lovable, ignorant bigot with a heart of gold. And,Gloria sitting there looking just like her daddy😂😂😂 not saying a word. We all as Americans have the right to LEGALLY own guns. My favorite parts of this show are with Archie and Gloria. When he calls her little girl it is just so sweet. She was his one and only child and it shows.
Well said, Mandy, and I agree 100%. The BLATANT contrast between Archie's gruff/grouchy/bigoted exterior vs. showing his tender side--especially if it involved Gloria and/or Edith--could (and did) make a lot of people cry. I still think AITF is the greatest sitcom of them all, when combining in-your-face current events/politics and hilarious comedy mixed in.

Archie has so many sides. You need to look at the clips where he is his most somber and emotional. There is an episode where his long time best friend, Stretch Cunningham, dies and he is asked to do the eulogy. It isn't until he gets to the service that he finds out that Stretch was Jewish. Another is when he says good bye to his beloved Edith when she dies. There is an episode where it is revealed that Archie was an abused child and another episode where Mike and Gloria move to California causing Archie to cry when they leave. Some other good clips you will find on TH-cam is when Archie meets George Jefferson, Archie at Lionel's engagement party, Archie gets blood from a black doctor, archie saves a transvestites life and Archie defends his maid.
The basement episode is incredible
Let’s not overlook Edith. She’s not as simple as she’s made out to be in the early episodes. Edith’s 50th Birthday (a one hour/two-part episode) is one of the greatest, most empowering moments on TV, in my opinion.
Not to mention the special that they did .....regarding that transvestite being killed... just because they were transvestite.

They didn't have a large standing army for a long time so every community has a citizen militia whereas citizens would arm themselves to possibly defend the town against attack. Indians, foreign soldiers, criminals etc. Personal defense was implied as well. Also the biggest reason was to protect the citizens from a tyrannical government that unfairly taxed the people or could take personal liberty away. They had just fought a war against a tyrant, King George and did not want another one to rise to power.

The militia mentioned in the 2A isn't some paramilitary force. It's just refers to able bodied citizens and the term "well regulated" just basically meant efficiently functioning. It certainly didn't mean regulated by the government. It was written to protect against a tyrannical government (that they just fought off). Also, the militia used their own guns. They weren't provided to the people by the government.
And you know this how? You don't get to change the definition of a word so that it supports your opinion. Militia definition: military force that is raised from the civil population to supplement a regular army in an emergency.

The Revolutionary War was fought largely by a patchwork of citizen armies, neighbors literally coming together to form so-called militia. In context, "militia" means people should be able to bear arms in the event they need to join together to fight an oppressive government, in that case, the British colonizer.

This show was banned from my house when I was a kid. However, my parents would be at one end of the house watching the Lawrence Welk show and I would sneak to the other end and turn on a little black-and-white TV and watch All In The Family. But to your point if you're going to do something bad with a gun you're not going to buy it through legitimate sources. For instance people with concealed carry licenses are less likely to shoot and are more law-abiding than cops

The second amendment is exactly as Mike read it: it starts with the clarifier “a well regulated militia, being necessary…” and ends with the declarative “the right…shall not be infringed.” For decades (if not more) that awkwardly written and punctuated text has been debated as to whether the militia piece is reasoning for the rule or if it’s part of the rule.
You only have them debating that in the government ...when 1 part of the government wants to try to control the people more than the other part does. I have watched them debate that damn issue for decades! And there's usually some other underlying reason as to why they bring it up again! Smh

The way I've always interpreted it:
A well regulated militia is necessary to preserve a free state...and in order for citizens to create that militia (in the event it becomes necessary) they need to have the right to own guns.
Agreed. What gets glossed over consistently is the WELL-REGULATED part. Gun laws should be stringent and firm. The people who have the firearms should be stable, mentally capable individuals with at least some training. If a citizen isn't willing to take a training course or two on gun safety, they probably don't need to own one. Show some commitment.

The notion of millions of untrained idiots running around with firearms just because they "want to" and have no training beyond popping shots in their back yard works directly against the fundamental idea behind the 2nd amendment. Training should be an absolute requirement, not a fringe option. Some people lean toward an officially recognized and organized militia, but that also works against the ideal.
The truth is, firearm training and safety should be absolutely required for gun ownership, because that is fundamentally what the founders viewed when they wrote the 2nd amendment - a citizenry who was well-trained, well-organized and understood how to fight to some degree on a battlefield if called to defend the country from threats - within or otherwise.

@@Aurora-tp3dy Comical. People didn't change common usage terminology from medium to medium. They didn't say bear well-regulated arms. They said a well-regulated militia. The two are simply not the same, no matter how Olympic-level your mental gymnastics are.
The irony here is I am a firm supporter of the 2nd amendment and have no issue with folks owning firearms. I don't believe a gun ban would ever work here. But I am fully aware the founding fathers did not mean for room temp IQ rejects to run around with semi-auto rifles and zero meaningful restrictions.

You asked about the militia. Many like to claim that the militia is the military or the national guard. But when the Founding Fathers were writing the Constitution and Bill of Rights the militia was the people and always intended to be the people, not any branch of the military. Many wish to ignore the quote below. And many do not know the quote below. But it defines/explains who and what the militia is. What is known in history as The Minute Men were farmers and others, the people, the citizens who took up arms and fought against the British but not as members of the Continental Army. The militia was everyday people, the citizens who when needed to assist the Continental Army banded together and did so.

The reason for the increase in the number of guns, is the multiple gun ownership. Gun owners should have at least 3 guns, a handgun for self-protection that can be legally carried depending on what state you live in. A shot gun for when multiple people break into your home, and an AR-15 for when shit hits the fan, remember it was just farmers, shopkeepers and ordinary people in the being of our revolution that took on the British, we weren't a nation yet and we had no military.

Meathead. The son. Is Rob Reiner. Now a famous director/producer and left wing activist, so his argument was probably genuine even then. Doesn’t make him right. Why do we listen to celebrities about anything ? What do they know of life ? They tried to press Elvis Presley on political issues, and his response was always the same; “I’m just an entertainer”. Another reason that he was the king.

britt did you catch that lionel jefferson from "the jefferson's", is the guy who entered in this scene, that the jefferson's are next-door neighbors to the bunker's, and that "the jefferson's" is one of 6 spin-offs this show spawned? (along with "good times", "maude", "704 hauser", "gloria", and "archie bunker's place")
The main reason for the wording of the second amendment including a 'well regulated militia' is because when somebody was conscripted it was better if they brought their own gun that they were comfortable with.
I also like how they present multiple perspectives while poking fun at all of them. They use humor to discuss hot topics.
Britt I personally don’t care what phrasing they use, they need to respect the constitution. I don’t own a gun, because I can’t afford one. But I don’t trust our government, or many other ones. People holding office in this country show me daily that they would have no problem harming the citizens. They have exalted themselves above us, and believe they now better than us. Not only that, they behave as if we should listen and obey. It pains them to even give lip service to thinking otherwise, which is why they do it so infrequently. Constitution does say well armed militia, but that is misinterpreted. Right now the UK is confiscating large knives including kitchen knives. It doesn’t matter who owns the weapon, because the government only goes after legal gun owners. Just about anything can be used as a weapon. The weapon is not the issue, the issue is the user of the weapon. There are enough legally owned firearms in this country to annihilate the nation. Yet the majority of us are still walking around, because the weapon is not the issue. I don’t know of one murder case or death by accidental shooting, where the gun went out on its own, and shot someone. There are many every day objects in this world used as weapons., and many more that can be used. What I want to know is when are they going to make as big a fuse about the leading murder weapon? They won’t, because the leading murder weapon is hands and feet.
as a gun owner, I encourage you to get one... if money is the issue, buy the parts and assemble it yourself... it's actually pretty easy, like adult legos.
An AR15 can be built for 300-400, with the most expensive single part running around 60 if you bargain shop
A glock pistol clone can be built for about the same price... though the single part price is higher
The creator of this show is Norman Lear. He also brought us The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, Good Times and a couple of other's that were popular in the 70's. Norman Lear passed away just recently. I miss him and shows he brought us.

My family watched this show a lot when I was young. I was never really a fan, but I did like that as the show progressed, Mike learned how to better get his point across to Archie. One argument that stuck with me was when Archie went to wake up Mike one day. He noticed that Mike would put on one sock, then one shoe instead of putting both socks on first. Archie called him an idiot, saying "Suppose there's a fire when you're halfway finished...my way you got both socks on when you go outside so you're even see?". Mike replied with "Well what if it's raining when the fire breaks out? Your way I'm standing outside with soaking wet feet...my way I can hop around on one shoe and my feet won't get wet." It sort of illustrated how pointless all their arguments were in the end, and yet Mike was still trying to learn how to come out on top lol.

Britt, IMO (and the opinions of MANY scribes, critics, fans, etc.), Carroll O'Connor's acting ability when portraying Archie Bunker in "AITF" is one of THE finest performances in the history of the small and/or big screen. Because despite how brilliant/funny Archie's character was on the revered sitcom, O'Connor almost didn't take the role, because he didn't like Archie's ignorant beliefs and attributes. But thankfully, O'Connor did take the role, and to this day many still rate "AITF" as the greatest sitcom of them all.

the biggest challenge isn't the word control...
It's the belief in who is responsible for you:
- 2A advocates believe they are solely responsible for the safety of themselves and those they love
- 2A opponents believe the government must protect the citizens
This simple divide is further widened by each side's understanding of rights:
- 2A advocates believe rights are inherent, endowed by our creator, they are not granted by government.
- 2A opponents believe rights are things people are entitled to, as determined by the will of the majority and grace of government.
And worse still, the divide exists because of a fundamental difference in how the constitution and 2A is viewed:
- 2A advocates believe that the bill of rights is a list of restrictions on government. That the 2A specifically exists to give citizens the tools needed to prevent totalitarianism should government attempt to infringe on those rights listed. That not only does it apply to weapons of war.... it ONLY applies to weapons of war... hunting & home defense are never mentioned.
- 2A opponents believe the constitution is outdated and needs to be updated. "That AR15s are useless against F15s"... not realizing that is only an argument to allow civilian ownership of F15s from the point of view of their opponents.
Britt, you have to remember most of Archie's generation were
WWII vets and took the government's word about everything. The Vietnam war was going at this time and people were starting to ask questions.

I’m about to turn 60and I remember my mom watching this show when I was a kid. , I too would sometimes watch but didn’t really get the issues then, it’s been a learning experience rewatching these as an adult. I am all for the right for folks to own guns, but there are way too many illegally owned guns on the street , and kids are being killed, many of them are running around with guns, and there’s way too many mass shootings in this country. Something has to give, we need stricter laws on gun ownership.
We already have them; the problem is that they're not being enforced. We need only look at Sutherland Springs and the mass shooting in Maine to see malfeasance by the federal, state and local authorities not following their own laws.
Gun control, is hitting what you aim at.

In U.S. v Heller, Justice Antonin Scalia wrote the Heller majority opinion. “The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home,” Scalia said, ruling on the "keep" portion of the amendment. In New York Rifle and Pistol Association v Bruen the court ruled that people have the right to carry arms in public for lawful purposes, ruling on the "bear" part of the amendment. Also in Heller, the ruling barred the government from banning arms "in common use for lawful purposes", and this was reiterated in Bruen.
Why do you leave out what Justice Scalia said about the 2nd Amendment, in that majority opinion? He said that the 2nd Amendment IS NOT unlimited. Meaning that the banning of certain guns is allowed, if deemed necessary.
@@darrinlindsey because that's a misinterpretation. They said that arms that are both dangerous and unusual can be banned; however, an arm that is in common use for lawful purposes cannot be unusual. If in the future, some technological or societal change raises a different issue, the Court might need to decide that. Bruen sited back to Heller on many occasions as well, so Heller is still good law.
@@mlong1958 Yes, Heller is still good law. But, in the majority opinion from Heller, Justice Scalia wrote that the 2A IS NOT UNLIMITED. Congress can ban certain weapons, as they see fit.
Also, in Caetano, it only took 220K stun guns to put them in the Common Use category and made them unbannable.

The writer of this show was a genius. His name was Norman Lear. He recently passed away at 101 years old. The show cause a lot of controversy. My father who doesn’t like anything, loved the show.
Norman Lear (RIP) was an absolute GENIUS!!! He could make a point, deliver a message and have everyone laughing in agreement AND seeing the other side. My dad was an Archie. Very opinionated and stuck in his ways.

yes the right to bear arms was added to the constitution to enable citizens outside the military (as in police forces, deputies etc) to keep and carry a gun. A well-regulated militia. Not everyone and not any gun they choose. back then there were little police. maybe in the big cities but outside that, no. sure there were sheriffs and marshalls but they were regulated. even chief justice Thurgood Marshall said the modern interpretation of the 2nd amendment was wrong. Back then the guns were single shot. muskets. powder and shot. not fast firing killing machines with large magazines.
I’ve been a fan of this show, and its spinoffs (Archie Bunkers Place, The Jeffersons, and Maude) for decades. It’s an incredible look at the current events of the day, and written in a comedic, satirical, and intelligent way. It was really to get America to laugh at itself, and how nonsensical that some popular ideas of the time could be. Remember too, that many of the people watching this were born in the VERY early 1900’s and 1910’s (they’d have been 60-70 at the time. Their mindsets were almost a century behind where we are in 2024. Britt, well done for highlighting this, and I hope you explore the spinoffs to this show. There’s so much in this history of ourselves that all too many are looking to erase. Continued success. 🇨🇦
this is great. glad you are having fun with shows like this. one to watch on a personal thing if you want to see some good writing I feel is Boston Legal. it is crazy at how many "cases" and things that were brought up then fit in today's world as well. as for this episode - to me I have always thought one should have to go through a skills and safety course similar to driving. I also think there should be a limit to what the public is allowed to get. by limit I mean types not amount. and if you want to do a larger size then you can go experience them in a controlled environment with professionals to teach you about them. just my opinion.

I recall there's a second part to this episode. Where Archie goes to the tv station, and tells how he feels about gun control. That was a typical Archie experience.

Just a wall separates the two homes. So yes, he would have heard the commotion... The Jeffersons wete hilarious by the way, added so much to the show. George being the exact opposite of Archie, gave as good as he got, with the rest of the families often poking fun at the idioticy of the two...lol
