Redd Fox was 49 when the show started in 1972. The actor who played Grady was in his early 40s. The actor Demont Wilson was 26 when the show started. LaWanda Page (Ester) was 52 when the show started.
Red Fox was a legendary comedian. For like 20 years before Sanford and Son. Also they had a spin off show. Chico and the Man. Both were hilarious with comedian lead characters.
No that wasn’t a spin-off, but it was an idea, to try the same idea of Sanford and Son, which was based on the real-life people of ‘Steptoe and Son’. So, they wanted to see if it would work with a White man, and a Hispanic man.
Donna was the landlord played by Lynn Hamilton. In this episode however she did not play Donna. She played the landlord whose name was not mentioned. The character of Donna was introduced later in the series where the character is a nurse and eventually becomes Fred's fiancee
Britt I watch each season when its 1st run of all the episodes. This show, All The Family, and Jeffersons were groundbreaking sitcoms of the 70's thanks to late great Norman Lear, who lived to 101 years old until he passed away on December 5, 2023.
you need to see the intro to each episode- it has lamont pullng up in the driveway in the ford truck with fed sitting on porch reading a paper- the theme music is great too- watch it!!!
If I remember correctly Redd Foxx which played Fred was in his later forties during the show not in his sixties like the character. The show ran for six seasons could have run longer but Redd Foxx wanted to end it. Grady was in charge because that was the season Redd Foxx was holding out for more money from the show.
Woody was also Ned the Wino on Good Times. The Julio episodes are fire. They forgot Melvin and Smitty the black cop and his two white partners, and Lamont’s Japanese friend played by Pat Morita.
Grady Wilson is quite literally one of my fave male characters of all time. I've been watching reruns of sanford and Son since I was a little girl (I just turned 49) and Grady still cracks me up. 🤣😂
'Sanford and Son' was actually an American remake of a British show called 'Steptoe and Son' and the pilot pretty much follows the other show. That's why Fred is so different. Of course, Red Foxx is hilarious so the show changed drastically.
That was the one who played Donna Harris's first appearance but she was not playing Donna there, Donna was a Nurse, this woman was a landlady. Been watching this since I was like 7 or 8, we know them by heart.
Numbers could be lottery and also street numbers. There are dream books that have corresponding numbers for actions and things. Not sure about the Grady actor but Redd Foxx definitely used makeup to look older, including lightening his hair. Also, that red truck is so old and raggedy it just looks pink! 😁
✨️FYI;...The lottery thing is...Whenever Fred Dreams Of A Items Or Anything else...He Has A Book Dreams Related To Numbers...So if he Dreams of a bus route...That number in the dream book means that it is number 219. And He Will use that number to play it in the lottery...
Grady took Fred’s place while Fred was holding out for a better contract. The excuse for that because Fred went back to St. Louse to attend to business.
Grady and Aunt Ester Have The Most Appearances On The Show. And The Hair Had Some Spray Of Gray But Fred's Hair Was Red In Real Life. That's Why His Name Is Redd Foxx. He Did Stand-Up Comedy. He was Hilarious Too😅👍🏾💯💯💯💯
Hahahahahah she said, “what is that big pink thing outside” ! Lol. I see it’s a truck ! Britt let me say this: The truck is actually a faded red ! Lol😅lol😅
Norman Lear just made incredible sit-coms in the 70s. All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford & Son, Maude, One Day at a Time & Diff'rent Strokes. I had to wait a few years to be able to watch them as many were a bit past my bedtime when I was a kid. By that time, the early shows were going into syndication and were actually shown during the daytime in the 80s.
Grady had His own show later on . He came and stayed with Lemont for a few episodes when Fred was away a few weeks. Almost shot Aunt Esther . 😂Just a great TV show .
It's fun watching you watch this. When I was a kid this was aired for the first time on TV, I watched it the day of air. And years of reruns..... And you see it for the first time. Glad you enjoy them.
I have one for you, Britt - there was an episode of Sanford & Son where Fred went to a club to see BB King. He performed one of my favorites - “How Blue Can You Get” and it’s awesome! You could react to a clip from the show and a great song at the same time!
He left Grady in charge for this exact reason lol.Fred knows Lamont has a good heart but Grady don’t like Woody or Ester so if you wanted to keep them out your house who would you pick to run your house when away?Someone who like the people you hate or someone like Woody who also hates the people you hate lol that’s why he left Grady in charge.Grady is not up to Fred’s level but he is close to the same no nonsense as Fred is.Fun fact my dad turned me onto this show and gave every single episode. You could show me just a 3 seconds clip of any episode and could name it
👏 good memory Britt! I grew up watching this show and it is still as funny today! This is back when they could joke about a variety of things without people getting offended. The good old days of television.
Britt, please know, the Ol' Timers made playing numbers a mystical experience. My dear Pop had two books that would translate dreams, thought and visions to numbers to play. After a while they had am all memorized like verses of the Bible. On top of that a license plate that cut him off, a billboard, a serial number on a brick, and any number that popped up more than once in a week. I love this show so darn much. Thanks for the smiles and memories.
back in the day, before the lottery was what it is now, it was called the playing the numbers but it was done in the streets, and it had a book called the red devil dream book, and it had numbers for every dream...I got one right now just for sentimental reasons cuz my granny used to play😂😂😂
achoo was also Lamont friend too. he was a very talented and funny comedian played by (pat morita) he was on the show until he got the part as Arnold on the legendary show happy days in 1975. he later appeared in all the karate kid films as well.
You are the most hilarious woman on the internet right now ! I catch your show whenever I can, and you always show out. I be laughing so hard, I have tears rolling out my eyes. Where’s your husband, I need to talk with him, on he keeps his composure with you. Wheeeeeww,…too funny !😂😂😂😂😂
Jackie O stands for Jaqueline Onassis, who at the time was married to Aristotle Onassis. Before that she carried the name of her first husband who was killed in Dallas by Lee Harvey Oswald while he was President of the United States. With that husband she was Jackie Kennedy.
Back in the day ( in the 1930's up until the 70's or early 80's ) there were numbers books with numbers listed from 0-300 or so and next to each number was a dream situation. And if you had a particular dream you match your dream up with the appropriate number. Then you would take your winning number to the "numbers man" or the bookie to pick up your winnings.
Britt, you should watch the movie "Harlem Nights". It's got Redd Foxx playing basically the same character... but not burdened by network TV rules. :) Along with Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy.
Sanford & Son was based on the British BBC TV show, Steptoe & Son, about a rag and bone man who would go round to houses and buy up scarfs, dresses, furniture etc. from people to then sell on for a profit. These rag and bone men no longer exist, but you used to see them around the UK, sitting on a cart, pulled by a horse. I’ve never seen the US version, but would imagine the set up is the same - the son in the UK version wants to modernise the business and dreams of improving his wealth and social class, and his ageing father who sneers at his son’s dreams and keeps putting him down, wanting him to stay downtrodden and working class like himself. If you ever get a chance to watch clips of Steptoe & Son, I would definitely recommend it, especially if the US version used some of the same UK storylines so you can compare the two.
18:02 this show will refer to Watts and El Segundo, CA a lot. As well as St Louis, MO where Fred is from (currently visiting)...while Grady house sits.
There were another 10 characters who appeared in 5 to 20 episodes each. During the show's network run there were episodes that contained "the N-word," which were edited out for syndication. The series was an adaptation of the British series "Steptoe & Son." This was a common practice in the 70s and 80s. For example "All in the Family" was an adaption of the British series "'Till Death Do Us Part," "Three's Company" was an adaption of "Man About the House," "Lotsa Luck" was an adaptation of "On the Buses," etc. "Man About the House" had two spinoff series, each adapted into American series. "George & Mildred" into "The Ropers," and "Robin's Nest" into "Three's a Crowd."
There were 6 seasons. After season 6 the actor who played Fred left the show. The show was renamed Sanford Arms for only 12 episodes. They turned the house into a hotel.
Red wasn’t actually as old he is portrayed on the show, I believed Red was 50 when the show started. Lamont mostly complained about his dad and rarely about anyone else. The numbers was just something they thought was lucky, like using the number that come in your fortune cookie. 😂 There are other friends of Fred’s and the white and black police officers who were also semi regulars.
Lamont works the junk yard. The denim are work clothes. Durable, inexpensive, and disposable if needed. Leaving good clothes from exposure to tears and stains. The denim choice is a practical one. Lamont’s a smart man. :-)
When I was much younger, some of my family members had these Dream books. The dreams would correspond with numbers in the book and then people would play those numbers. In the lottery.
Red Foxx probably was aided In making his appearance look older then his actual years. He was only 50 years old when Sanford and Son started. The show lasted from 1972-1977😊 I don't remember the character Darlene of the goat Chico ever having any big part to play in the series. That might have been a 1 or 2 of appearance...lol!
I grew up watching this. As a child one of my first cassette tapes was of redd fox standup comedy show. As a child I really shouldn't have been listening to it 😂😂
In the Bubba segment, they are not talking about the lottery. In California, the lottery didn't start until 1985. "Sanford and Son" ran from 1972 to 1977. I believe they were talking about horse racing, which you could bet on at Hollywood Park, which wasn't too far away from Watts, although admittedly, I haven't seen the show in decades so I may be wrong about horse race betting. And they forgot the two neighborhood police officers, Smitty and Hoppy. They were very funny recurring characters as well.
Grady( Whitman Mayo) was my favorite co-star. But they missed several regulars. Including Officer Smitty Officer Hopkins, Melvin, Ah Chew and Hoppie's sister
Demond Wilson, the actor who plays "Lamont Sanford", wrote a book on how the show started and behind the scenes info about the characters and filming. There is a video on youtube where he discusses the show and his friendship with Red Foxx. The video link is: th-cam.com/video/OzTdqXVX6XQ/w-d-xo.html
Going into the 4th season of the show, Redd Foxx had a contract dispute. Grady was written in to a more prominent role. It seems that they had belief that Fred would be back, but he never returned. They did 2 more seasons.
One episode Fred says something about Elizabeth (wife) being the beautiful family member while insulting Ester. Rollo was a friend of Lamont as was Julio who had moved in next door. Fred was afraid that the Puerto Ricans were going to take over the neighborhood.
Redd Foxx the Emmy-nominated star of the second-highest rated program on American television walked out on his show. With six episodes still to be produced in the third season, Redd Foxx held out for a new contract. He initially cited “health issues,” but the dispute was clearly over salary, profits, and ownership. “Danny Thomas, Lucille Ball, Dick Van Dyke, and all those cats got a piece of their shows,” Foxx told People in 1974. “I’m fighting now for a whole lot of black people in show business who never had any doors opened for them.” While negotiations continued behind the scenes, Lear and Yorkin’s insurance policy paid off on-screen. Whitman Mayo became Demond Wilson’s de facto co-star, with Grady moving into the Sanford house while Fred was at his cousin’s funeral in St. Louis. Scripts were rewritten and one was scrapped entirely. And, for the next eight produced episodes, Sanford And Son unofficially became “Grady And Lamont.” Happily, Foxx and Tandem Productions inked a new deal, and Foxx returned in June of 1974 with a raise, plus 25% of the net profits. The network split up Mayo’s eight episodes, airing the first five in February and March and the remaining three in December - after Foxx’s return had aired as the season four premiere. Ironically, Sanford And Son didn’t skip a beat without its star. Ratings actually increased from season three to four, and NBC liked Mayo so much they gave Grady his own spin-off in 1975. Grady became Bud Yorkin’s first series after he split with longtime partner Lear and, when it was cancelled after just ten episodes, Mayo returned to Sanford And Son. Mayo went on appear in two sequel series: Sanford Arms in 1977 and Sanford (sans Demond Wilson) in 1981. In total, Grady appeared in 37 episodes of Sanford And Son and Mayo played the character on four different shows. When Grady said goodbye in 1981, Mayo was just 50 years old - two decades younger than his character!
Donna wasn't Donna in that episode where she was the landlord, she was Lamont's landlord when he moved out and rented an apartment away from Fred. because he couldn't get any privacy with Fred around, always spying on him with his dates. Donna got written in the show later as Donna Harris a practical nurse and Fred's Girlfriend /finance.
One of my favorite episodes was when Fred was running low on champagne but had some ripple, so he made Champipple
Redd Fox was 49 when the show started in 1972. The actor who played Grady was in his early 40s. The actor Demont Wilson was 26 when the show started. LaWanda Page (Ester) was 52 when the show started.
That's horrifying

Grady was the funniest co-star of that show.
Totally agree
Definitely the best
Grady 😂
No Bubba was
No rollo
In my opinion Grady and Julio made the show what it is I know Esther is a big part too but Grady is the sh!+ LOL
I liked Bubba more than Grady…just my opinion.
Grady is goated
Sanford and Son is the best!

One if my favorite shows in the 70s. I still watch reruns even now
Grady Wilson is quite literally one of my fave male characters of all time. I've been watching reruns of sanford and Son since I was a little girl (I just turned 49) and Grady still cracks me up. 🤣😂
A fun fact about Grady is, that his name in the show, was the real name of the guy who played Lamont. Grady Demond Wilson.
And Redd Foxx's dad's name was Fred Sanford & Redd's brother's name was Fred G. Sanford. The G stood for Glenn
One of my favorite shows. I used to watch the reruns every day after school.
Sandford and Son was the Americanised version of the original BBC U.K. Series: ‘Steptoe and Son’ which started in 1962 in glorious B&W. 😊
I always liked Grady, they would write him a funny line and he KNEW how to deleiver it just right.
There are many "dream books" out there that have numbers that relate to everything.
Long live Grady Wilson !!!
'Sanford and Son' was actually an American remake of a British show called 'Steptoe and Son' and the pilot pretty much follows the other show. That's why Fred is so different. Of course, Red Foxx is hilarious so the show changed drastically.

My grandmother had a book of dreams and the numbers associated with them
✨️FYI;...The lottery thing is...Whenever Fred Dreams Of A Items Or Anything else...He Has A Book Dreams Related To Numbers...So if he Dreams of a bus route...That number in the dream book means that it is number 219. And He Will use that number to play it in the lottery...
Grady took Fred’s place while Fred was holding out for a better contract. The excuse for that because Fred went back to St. Louse to attend to business.
I watch Sanford and son every night. They have 2 shows back to back on Catchy TV
I always loved Grady! 2nd only to Esther.
In my opinion Rollo was the coolest and the most funniest character.
Grady was always my favorite.
In Donna's first appearance, the actress was playing a different character, Lamont's landlord, her first appearance as Donna was a few episodes later.
Don't forget Officer Smitty and Hoppy.
The actor playing Grady was only 43 years old in his first appearance, and Redd Foxx was 49.
Grady and Aunt Ester Have The Most Appearances On The Show. And The Hair Had Some Spray Of Gray But Fred's Hair Was Red In Real Life. That's Why His Name Is Redd Foxx. He Did Stand-Up Comedy. He was Hilarious Too😅👍🏾💯💯💯💯
I forgot what an awesome show S&S is…I loved this reaction. Good job on the memorization!
The actor that played Uncle Woodrow also played the infamous Ned the wino on Good Times aka "Black Jesus".
Hahahahahah she said, “what is that big pink thing outside” ! Lol. I see it’s a truck ! Britt let me say this: The truck is actually a faded red ! Lol😅lol😅
One of the all greats shows on TV as a kid loved this show. And still watch it today
Grady kept me coming back to Sanford and Son's show...!
Grady had His own show later on . He came and stayed with Lemont for a few episodes when Fred was away a few weeks. Almost shot Aunt Esther . 😂Just a great TV show .
It's fun watching you watch this.
When I was a kid this was aired for the first time on TV,
I watched it the day of air.
And years of reruns.....
And you see it for the first time.
Glad you enjoy them.
Hi Britt there were 9 seasons I own the series on DVD this is my favorite TV series ever, love your reactions.
I have one for you, Britt - there was an episode of Sanford & Son where Fred went to a club to see BB King. He performed one of my favorites - “How Blue Can You Get” and it’s awesome! You could react to a clip from the show and a great song at the same time!

They put white in Grady's hair to make him appear older. He was in his early 40s.
Oh wow!
Grady replaced Fred for a few episodes when Red Foxx was asking for more money for the show.
Fred was old in the show but in real life he was in his 40s. He was 68 in 1991 when he passed. These shows were the early seventies.
achoo was also Lamont friend too. he was a very talented and funny comedian played by (pat morita) he was on the show until he got the part as Arnold on the legendary show happy days in 1975. he later appeared in all the karate kid films as well.
Fun fact: Donna Harris also played the part of Verdi on the TV series, The Waltons. A great actress.
15:35 He does not have a drinking problem, I think he has it all figured out. XD
I named my dog after Grady.

Along with Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy.
Grady was awesome. Every episode with him is comedy gold.
Sanford & Son was based on the British BBC TV show, Steptoe & Son, about a rag and bone man who would go round to houses and buy up scarfs, dresses, furniture etc. from people to then sell on for a profit. "Gamblers will get numbers from anything" is the inference. Goats have wicked eyes.
18:02 this show will refer to Watts and El Segundo, CA a lot.
As well as St Louis, MO where Fred is from (currently visiting)...while Grady house sits.
There's a book that correlates everything to numbers
Their truck looks like it was originally red, but it's old and the paint is faded into an almost pink color due to time and the elements.
Grady got a spin-off show. I don't think it lasted more than one season. Grady was my favorite too.
Jackie O was called Jackie O because after Kennedy, she married Mr. Onassis
There were another 10 characters who appeared in 5 to 20 episodes each. During the show's network run there were episodes that contained "the N-word," which were edited out for syndication. :-)
When I was much younger, some of my family members had these Dream books. The dreams would correspond with numbers in the book and then people would play those numbers.
In the lottery.
Let left out Ah Chew, played by the great Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi) himself.
That truck is actually in a museum now.. I can't remember where, but I saw it somewhere on youtube.
Red Foxx probably was aided In making his appearance look older then his actual years. He was only 50 years old when Sanford and Son started. The show lasted from 1972-1977😊
I don't remember the character Darlene of the goat Chico ever having any big part to play in the series. That might have been a 1 or 2 of appearance...lol!
There’s also Officers Smitty and Hoppy.
This is their relationship. Lamont gets angry with his Dad all the time. The Fred you know was that way from the start.
I grew up watching this. As a child one of my first cassette tapes was of redd fox standup comedy show. As a child I really shouldn't have been listening to it 😂😂
The original real SANFORD AND SON truck is in North Royalton Ohio. It owned by Blueline Classics.
Easy to remember Grady, his nickname is Shady Grady. When Grady and Fred are in the episode those are the funniest.
The old Ford truck is just faded red. You should watch the theme song sometime. It will explain a lot.

The pink work truck is actually faded red .
"Oh its a truck" . You need to watch the Sanford and Son intro to the show. The theme song is classic.
the truck was red not pink
The actors who play Fred, Grady, Esther and others wer only in their 40s altho the characters were in their mid 60s
Grady( Whitman Mayo) was my favorite co-star. But they missed several regulars. Including Officer Smitty Officer Hopkins, Melvin, Ah Chew and Hoppie's sister

Redd Foxx contract dispute with the show in 1975. After several appearances that year, led to Grady getting his own short lived tv series.
Fred had a fascination with Ripple. There was a running joke with Ripple.
I can't see myself not watching
These Gems
There is a Dream Book that was out back in the day that associated dreams with numbers. My mom had one
One episode Fred says something about Elizabeth (wife) being the beautiful family member while insulting Ester. Rollo was a friend of Lamont as was Julio who had moved in next door. Fred was afraid that the Puerto Ricans were going to take over the neighborhood.
Your reactions are hilarious and you give interesting commentary.
Thank you for posting.
we are having fun with this show 😄

In total, Grady appeared in 37 episodes of Sanford And Son and Mayo played the character on four different shows. When Grady said goodbye in 1981, Mayo was just 50 years old - two decades younger than his character!
Conan O'Brian found Grady many years after the show and had him on his show after a nationwide search.
We had some pretty funny shows back then. The Jeffersons and All in the Family were to others. The Carol Bernett show had many great comedians.
