3:15 Paul isn't necessarily meant to be a piece of shit, although he absolutely has bad points. He's mostly just blunt about his feelings and unwilling to commit to stuff he absolutely knows he won't like. Some autistic people really see themselves in him with some of his behaviors.
Nick Lang has said Paul was written to be 'just a guy', which fits with the title of the show. 😂 I've heard that some autistic people find him relatable too. I think it's partly in Jon's acting (as well as the writing).

I might add that since there is definitely an asshole coded character already in the show it really helps to take the edge off of Paul’s bluntness, just comparatively.
Here's something I found regarding Paul's autism, quote from the wiki "Jon stated in one of his twitch streams that Paul might be autistic along with the fact that he believes Paul is autistic coded" I hope this helps!

Just remembered that “Homeless Guy” has a secret, but it’s only revealed during Nightmare Time, so I won’t spoil it here. 🤫 It isn’t terribly important to the plot, but it DOES recontextualize his part in all three musicals. 🤯

@@singwithAshley after you've watched TGWDLM you can watch Nightmare Time season 1 episode 2, both Forever & Always and Time Bastard. The story (in two parts) is the absolute best thing Starkid have ever written and it blew my mind. The songs are really good, you could react to those separately. The episode is LONG but it's so so so worth it. Warning: this was a lockdown Zoom project, don't let the format distract you. The story and acting are phenomenal.

I wouldn't say Paul is a bad guy. I think these characters are all supposed to be average and when you think of the average person, you don't think of them as good or bad. And a lot of times when we interact with the average person, like if you ever had to work in customer service, you think of them as jerks. Not the biggest evils, but they're not great people.
So when Paul tips purely because of an incentive, impressing Emma, it just seems like the average thing to do. Your average person also tends not to give away money to charities/homeless people on the street or sign up for things outside of office hours.
This is all factual. I think that’s why I was confused because they first introduced him as a “piece of shit” so I was going along with the gag. But then I was like… wait, I don’t know if I agree with this lol
If/When you rewatch this kerping your eyes on Paul during the song is so fun because of Jon Matteson's facial expressions.

@@singwithAshley Yes, the cast gives great facial expressions in this musical especially, to great comedic effect. I feel like often times people have a "singing face" in musicals, but Starkid shows off their acting prowess by having each character react to the song in a way unique to them. This applies to both the singers and the onlookers in each song, so keep an eye on their faces!
"my wife" is a reference to borat, in which he says "my wife" in a simmilair tone. something people quote in different peices of media or real life because the way it was said was funny. so ted said "lotte hottie" in the same tone, then made the reference more clear by following it with "my wife"

Also, I look forward to seeing if you realize what the entire theme of this musical is. The first time I watched this, I didn't catch it because, well, I'm not familiar with it. But once someone mentioned it in a TH-cam Comment, I went, "OHHHHHH! Well that's just brilliant!" Given what they did with this musical, I'd be surprised if you didn't catch it given who you are and what you do. There's your hint. 😝

I enjoy tracking the actors a lot in TGWDLM because it's a really small cast and there is a lot of character changes. Which leads to things like Jamie and Corey just walking off the stage towards the end of this so they can get ready for the next scene. But they do it so smoothly that I didn't even notice until like my 3rd time watching!

I love being in an audience that is immersed with the show, that is the main reason I love live theater is to be with a bunch of people experiencing the show with me, plus how the cast can then play off of the audience's reactions

Joey is the best character singer in starkid hands down. He puts on a new tone for every character he plays. This is especially evident in "Spies Are Forever" where he plays 3 plus chars and sings differently for all of them. Wait until you hear his deep dark growly tone in Trail To Oregon or his bright pop-y tone in Starship.

Joey is a force to be reckoned with in Trail to Oregon. I imagine the early conversations went like this:
Joey: Hey Jeff. Which role do I play in your new musical?

In case there's any confusion, all of the musicals (this one, Black Friday, Nerdy Prudes Must Die, and the Nightmare Time web series) take place in Hatchetfield. Clivesdale is the next town over, and we don't like Clivesdale, lol.

@@singwithAshley Yeah, each musical is set in the same town (Hatchetfield), but in a different alternate universe. And Nightmare time 2 is all set in the same universe, but NMT1 stories are in diff universes. And the Black and White is outside of all the multiverse. So some things happen the same in each universe (i.e. musical), but some things are different!
fun fact abt this song,mariah’s riffing was so consistent that they were able to cut and splice together different days of filming/clips and it would still line up!

Also, as others have said Firebringer for Lauren's best voice, NPMD for Mariah's best voice (even though she's absolutely amazing vocally in anything she does), and personally, Holy musical Batman for Jeff's best voice😄 Looking forward to the rest of this series!

Your observations about Lauren’s voice here vs. Black Friday: I've always felt that, besides her being sick, her solo songs in BF might have been a bit too low for her voice. Lauren is very much a high soprano - in fact, in the finale of Holy Musical, Batman, she actually sings a descant part from offstage that borders on being coloratura.
Also, I love how near the end when you put up the text about your lighting situation, you left in the spelling "distate" - just one more bit of beautiful authenticity in your videos!
I’m excited to hear more versatility from Lauren!! I can’t wait to continue exploring her voice via various characters!

O truly think that’s why I’m like that. As a performer, I HATE when the audience is dead! I feed off others energy… when there is none, I have none… and then the show is dead too. RIP
@@singwithAshley THIS THIS THIS. performing to a dead audience is so demotivating and also like... oddly mortifying? you feel a bit ridiculous when you get no response, lmao. i've done a few shows where i've had to actively shout over the audience in some scenes (they were reacting as intended, not being rude!) and i'd take that over silence any day tbh 😅

i love seeing other peoples reactions to the hatchetfield trilogy! i think after this, nerdy prudes will DEFINITELY impress you. we get really good vocals from everyone, I would especially point out lauren in her song in nerdy prudes because of what you've said about her showcase!
I think it's really cool that this technically isn't a musical because of how the songs are used. They aren't used to express big emotions like in Black Friday.
When you get to the end of this musical please watch the audience clapping, actors final bow section- they have a really funny bit there.

Professor Hidgens' acting is definitely inspired by Doc Brown, but when I look at him all I can see is Leonard Nimoy's character in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers with his blazer and turtleneck :D Wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional costume inspiration given the story

I can't agree more on how amazing they are at setting the scene with comparatively very little. The sets are often very simple, but the lighting and sound work are so excellent that I'm never pulled out of the scene. Absolutely love Starkid, such a ridiculous amount of talent and love for the stage in one group.
OH, and talking about Lauren, I thought the same thing but I realized that she just really leans into the character's voice when she does these shows and it sometimes affects her voice. You haven't watched it yet, but when you watch Nerdy Prudes Must Die I think it's the most obvious. She has a solo song in that and you can hear her switching between the character voice and her proper singing voice.
if you're wanting and willing to give black friday songs another try, the official recordings are available on youtube, they're much better than the recorded live version (for obvious and understandable reasons)

That's how Nick Lang - director and one of the writers - described what he wanted from Paul LOL. Doesn't sound like much but I think Jon's skill could easily be underestimated at times in this show (I say as a fangirl, probably speaking to other fangirls). 😂

heck yeah la dee dah dah day! things are going to go crazy from here. from the hatchetfield series, guy who didn't like musicals is near and dear to me. the writing is just so good and the escalation is great. the switch from regular town to music fest to the chaos that later unfolds is just. a sight to behold.
in contrast black friday feels the weakest writing wise but wiggly is a very prominent figure throughout and it establishes the black and white very well. nightmare time season 1 & 2 really goes deeper into it if you're willing to watch them, though there are less songs. and then writing wise nerdy prudes must die is the strongest throughout, the pacing is great and it feels like there is no wasted moment.
i'm so excited to see you go through guy who didn't like musicals. it has one of the most iconic starkid songs bar none. note: cup of roasted coffee and poisoned coffee are a set and should be listened to together, because the contrast is insane. (cup of poisoned coffee is right after roasted coffee)

I was wondering about the little flourish Mariah puts on "save" around 24:30, is there a term for that technique? To my untrained ear it sounds like you constrict your throat to give the note a bit of a growling quality, I think I've heard a lot of soul singers do something similar. I don't have much of a background in music so I may be way off base but I'm curious.
I agree that Lauren's singing is better here than in Black Friday, but honestly I think many of the songs in Black Friday (as far as I can remember, its been a while since i watched it) are a bit too low for her sometimes
Yes! I talk about that in my Black Friday Series. It was a common problem for the girls. I also talked about Jaime Lyn having to reach for some low notes that just got lost
