Although I doubt it was hitting Hatchetfield specifically: After all, as far as the Russians know, Hatchetfield is some small town in Michigan, of no importance. my interpretation is that that was either a regular plane, or, more likely, a missle headed for somewhere else that passed over Hatchetfield, and that they ended up getting to Professor Hidgens' house and waiting out the start of WWIII there.

Fun fact: when they announced this musical, it was like March or April and it was trending on Twitter and everyone who didn't know starkid didn't understand why Black Friday was trending and thought that it was an April fools or something like that and they were freaking out lol

Fun fact! Lauren (who plays Linda) was actually sick during the recording which makes her performance even more impressive
yeah. about like half the cast was sick at the time of recording, and they've had to skip some parts and they even needed to cancel one of the shows (coincidentally on black friday!). lauren was the one who was most sick iirc. a funny thing i remember was jeff (macnamara) stepping in for the role of tom. it was basically a one-man show lmao

Lauren is currently convinced she had COVID during these performances as she was told by her doctor “It’s an unidentifiable virus that affect your throat and lungs” and knowing now that the virus was detectable in LA in late 2019(although not recognized due to lack of deaths) it makes sense

And Lauren Lopez is Linda Monroe, which creates an amusing irony because it means the same people who played our main heroes (Paul and Emma) last time are now playing the main bad guys in this one.
Pretty sure the reason Becky missed the needle is because Hannah is wearing the hat that's supposed to protect her.
Ironically, even after the hat was taken off, Hannah was still protected; instead of killing her or getting violent when they figured out she didn't have the doll, Lex happened to come in with Tom at a convenient enough time nothing bad happened.
And after the hat was taken from Hannah, it was given to Charlotte. She's the only one from the cult that you see alive at the end.

While a lot more 'cinematic' in it's camera work, you do lose a lot of the performance because of it. Especially in a Starkids' production where there's always three things going on on stage, the main focus, the background performance, and whatever Jeff Blim is doing.
Man Joey is so good as a bad guy. He's played a lot of lighthearted silly characters, but lately he's been getting more villain roles. Its weird, he has the best goofy smiles. But also look so sinister
It's the Kubrick Stare. He pulls it off so well.

Starkid had Lauren Lopez sing a song telling everyone to worship her, knowing full well that the fandom will absolutely do it (and already does)
So, the third musical is called Nerdy Prudes Must Die. That is NOT the same story as Nightmare Time. Nightmare Time is something they did over Zoom, because they couldn't perform Nerdy Prudes Must Die. Nightmare Time have (as of now) three episodes. Each episode consists of two stories. They all take place in Hatchetfield and contains characters from the Guy Who didn't like musicals and Black Friday (such as Paul, Emma, Ted, Bill, Tom, Hannah, Ethan, Lex, man in a hurry and the homeless guy) I would highly recommend you to watch them! The stories are amazing and eye-opening!

@@heathengremlin992 NPMD Is not up yet. As far as I'm concerned the script is ready and they have some or most characters cast. But they haven't started rehearsing yet because of COVID
whether NPMD goes ahead or not is entirely dependent on how soon they can start rehearsing. apparently hannah is in it in some shape or form, and nick said that the longer they put it off, the older kendall gets, and hannah has to age with her. it's entirely possible that NPMD may not even happen.
As far as I'm informed was the girl who played hannah only 14 when they performed black friday and when they filmed it. I think it's really impressive that she has such a sound to her voice at that age. I wish I would have such a great voice xD

The vocals and acting in this show are some of favorites, even if it's not my favorite overall show. "take me back" in particular is just a peak musical theatre duet.
I think they're two of Starkids' strongest vocalists so hard agree.

I love that little "and then flash..." moment. Normally, an incomplete motif would be a bad thing, but here, the flash, bang, ETC represents Tom's PTSD gained from his wife's death. The flash without the bang indicates that Tom has finally managed to MOVE ON from that night. The trauma is still there, the trigger still hits him (hence "Flash"), but he's moved on and coped at last, and can resist flashing back or breaking down, hence the lack of "bang".
I absolutely love the fact that they use the tunes of the songs from Tgwdlm in the background, like how general McNamara's introduction has the tune of "we're great again" in the background.
Musical motifs are my favorite, and the one with Mcnamara gets me every time I rewatch the show.
I never expected they could make Christmas music ominous but "When Wiggly Comes" proved me wrong.

I like how Emma and Paul coming to see Tim in the morning is the same poppy tune that plays in TGWDLM after "Lah Di Dah Day" where Paul keeps saying "okay..."
The guy playing Uncle Wiley (Joey Richter) and the woman Linda (Lauren Lopez) are engaged in real life & the guy who plays President Goodman (Curt Mega) and the redhead Becky Barnes (Kim Whalen) are married irl. Also the girl playing Hannah and Tim (Kendall Nicole) was only 13 years old during these performances. Oh and the one playing Ethan/Santa (Robert Manion) is Australian irl
PEIP is one tie-in throughout the Hatchetfield musicals. As General McNamara states, PEIP stands for "Paranormal, Extraterrestrial, and Inter-dimensional Phenomena."
They covered Extraterrestrial in TGWDLM and Inter-dimensional in Black Friday. The next musical (Nerdy Prudes Must Die) is supposedly about Paranormal Phenomena.
Another tie-in is the characters who don't appear on stage. In TGWDLM, Emma talks about how her sister Jane died in a car crash, and Black Friday focuses on the family Jane left behind. The character Grace is also briefly mentioned in both musicals. Tom mentions that Grace was too busy to babysit Tim in Black Friday, and in TGWDLM, Ted says that Alice called Grace Chastity a "nerdy prude." Given the title of the third musical, it's safe to assume that we haven't heard the last of Grace.
I hope you feel smug about this, lol. Called the hell out of it!
As far as how they connect, most say that hatchetfield is like a twilight zone type of thing where the timeline “resets” or whatever. So TGWDLM, Black Friday, and the nightmare time stories all feature the same town and characters but don’t necessarily line up with each other, which is how everyone in hatchetfield can die from singing zombies in TGWDLM and be fine at the start of Black Friday

So from what I understand of the last song is that Hatchetfeild is in some weird time loop/dimension thing where they keep redoing the Black Friday. Hannah seems to remember the last few times they redid the day at the end which is why she sings "Tomorrow won't come, Tomorrow will come today." Because the next day is coming but its also the repeat of Black Friday.
Its interesting but we probably won't understand it fully until Nerdy Prudes Must Die. Which i personally think is going to follow Alice (Bills Daughter) or Grace Chastity just from things said in The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals.
I also don't know if you caught it by General McNamara does explain what the acronym for P.E.I.P is. Which is Paranormal, Extraterrestrial, Inter-demensional, Problems or something very close to that. We've seen Aliens and Inter-demensional beings so the big fan theory is that we are getting Paranormal next!

I'm so glad you guys liked the music as much as I did. It's probably not my favorite musical from them, but it's definitely up there and the music is a big part of that. I feel like Jeff really outdid himself this time, especially in writing for Dylan. He really gave Dylan a chance to show off.

My theory is that Hatchetfield is caught in some type of loop. Different apocalypse events happen and destroy the town, then the next day everything goes back to normal.

The “sequel” explains a lot and yeah, alternate universes, with a different inter dimensional monster trying to break in to each.
The idea was the very last show would tie it all together and humanity would finally completely “win,” but who knows if that will happen now.
Coming back to say I hope you guys will look into the newest musical ‘Nerdy Prudes Must Die’ it’s their third and newest musical in the Hatchetfield series and is fantastic! :)

Okay I haven’t finished yet but I wanted to get this out before I forgot lmao. My friend was at one of the shows they filmed and at the end of Act 1 she texted me and was saying it was good but she wasn’t sure about the Christmas decorations. Then after the show was over she goes NVM IT ALL MADE SENSE lmao.
In the digital ticket you can see the Sniggles waving around the garland too which really makes it look like Wiggly was talking, it’s great!
As a Mom, I was wholly invested the minute I heard "What Tim Wants," and by "If I Fail You" I was bawling.

This is really cool actually. I have difficulty with faces (it's really hard to recognize people if they change their hair or pretty much in général, actually) which makes plays really immersive for me, but it also means I didn't realize the same actor was certain characters so it's pretty cool

I really disliked black friday back when it came out. And I'm still not sure about some things but I like it better with every rewatch.
@@ZimtPorridge I still dislike Black Friday, honestly. The songs are weak and the plot is even weaker. The only ones that come close to being listenable are Feast or Famine and What If Tomorrow Comes. And I don't like CaliforMIA but I can see the appeal. In retrospect I think it just leans way too much into the angst of its audience, and I'm not particularly angsty so I hate it. Same reason I hate Donnie Darko lol.

Now that the newest instalment of the hatchet field saga Nerdy Prudes Must Die has been released you guys have to check it out! I’ve been obsessed since my first listen!
You guys gonna do "Nerdy Prudes Must Die"? It's back onstage, and you DO see Gerald finally. And, of course, it's really freaking good!!!
Got to see this one live on opening night, Halloween 2019, and it might have been my favorite theatergoing experience. Some of the blood effects were shot in isolation after they finished the performance on the night they filmed, because several angles for shots they had would've been impossible to get during a normal performance without ruining the audience's experience. They just took advantage of that by doing some blood effects they couldn't do as easily live.
They were supposed to put out another Hatchetfield musical, "Nerdy Prudes Must Die," in Fall 2020, but obviously that didn't happen. They still intend on staging it as their first post-everything-closing show, and in the meantime have put out more material set in Hatchetfield in a series called "Nightmare Time" that they produced over Zoom calls last year, with another batch supposedly coming soon.
Just loved your reaction! Both of you sitting there open-mouthed during the last part was literally me. I basically agree with all your end comments. BF is the best thing Starkid has done yet!!! Lex singing while she is being choked to death is just heartbreakingly poignant. Here are a few points I picked up during rewatches:
- Becky misses with the hypodermic because Hannah is wearing Ethan's magic hat
- Uncle Wiley is Colonel Wilbur Cross, MacNamara's mentor, who went into the Black & White 13 years ago.
- All of the characters from TGWDLM make an appearance during the finale
- The Langs based the story on H. P. Lovecraft's horror stories. Wiggly is Cthulhu
I never connected uncle Wiley to Wilbur cross! That's so cool to know!

the set design with the tinsel remains one of my all time favorite theatre design choices
I loved the awestruck looks on your faces during Wiggle (Linda’s song near the end) because SAME. The cool camera work combined with Lauren’s natural magnetism (I literally can never take my eyes off her when she’s on screen) makes the whole number almost hypnotic.
I showed this musical to one of my friends, and when Linda died he yelled “NO!” And I had to remind him that she was the villain. Idk how Lauren can make her characters both so hilarious and so mesmerizing all at the same time but it’s fantastic.
I only just realized now on my 3rd viewing the parallels between Lex's situation and Tom's -- her mother is drowning so much in her own problems that she can't take care of her own kids, and Tom is close to doing the same thing with his kid, when all their kids really want is for them to be around. The fact that Lex serves as the wake-up call for Tom in the end becomes even better narrative-wise when you take that into account. GOD this show is so cleverly done.
Also if you guys plan on doing any more Starkid musicals in the future, I'd recommend Firebringer and Starship!

About the Zoom performances (Nightmare Time)… At first I was skeptic too, but they really pulled it off. And the songs in those performances are great as well and just having more stories from that universe is a lot of fun.
Also loved the confusion at the end cause my first time watching it I just sat in silence for 5 minutes not knowing what just happened either.

God I love this ending lmao, once you figure it out it’s amazing. I get chills every time! I’m sure everyone’s already told you but those were nukes at the end - World War III.
I think Hatchetfield is stuck in a loop - they’re destined to bring about the end of the world in every timeline. But hopefully in one of the following musicals someone will be able to break the loop. We know the next musical is going to be Nerdy Prudes Must Die but we don’t know beyond that.
Nightmare Time is the ‘zoom call’ one. It’s short stories about Hatchetfield, all taking place in other timelines. Definitely worth a watch! It won’t be a stage play.
@White Noise Reacts Here are some clarifications and fun facts for you:
1. The ending of Black Friday is that Hatchetfield got nuked and everyone died. That's what Nick Lang said. So what we saw were the remaining inhabitants of Hatchetfield looking to the skies and what we heard was a Russian Bomber flying by and nuking the city.
2. Mariah Rose Faith (Greenpeace Girl and Bill's Daughter in "The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals") was originally supposed to be in Black Friday. She was to play the role of Lex. But then she got cast in the Broadway Tour of "Mean Girls" so she had to be recast.
3. Darren Criss (Harry Potter) was originally supposed to play Santa Claus. But they said he was going to play him in a pre-recorded segment. So my guess is that, originally, "Santa Goes To High School" was, originally, supposed to be a pre-recorded thing they were going to show on a screen, but then they decided it would be better live so Darren was unable to play the role and they gave it to Robert Manion.
4. Kendall Nicole (Hannah) was 13 years old during this production. She turned 14 during the performances (yes there was more than one performance of this).
5. Both "The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals" and "Black Friday" take place in alternate realities. The original third musical of the series, "Nerdy Prudes Must Die," was to take place in a third alternate reality.
6. I highly, HIGHLY, recommend watching the three episodes of "Nightmare Time" on Starkid's TH-cam Channel if you are all invested in Hatchefield. It explains a LOT more. From what I understand, they took pieces from "Nerdy Prudes Must Die" and rewrote them for some of the Nightmare Time stories. If that is the case, my guess if they actually do "Nerdy Prudes Must Die," it will be quite different to the original version they wrote before the Pandemic. If you plan to watch "Nightmare Time," keep in mind all this is all done live over Zoom with pre-recorded footage for the songs. Also, there's, supposedly, a Season 2 of "Nightmare Time" that was supposed to come out this year, but we haven't heard anything from Team Starkid since "Nightmare Time" Season 1. The Starkid Fandom has been rampantly theorizing the true nature of the plot of the Hatchefield Series since "Nightmare Time" originally aired and I would love to hear your guys' theories.

Sometime after you end your marathon with Senior Year... I must recommend Nightmare Time. They record it live from their various homes, mini-stories set in Hatchetfield to keep the hype going through the pandemic. They're doing a second season this year, and hopefully next year they'll actually continue the Hatchetfield saga properly with more major stage shows... but everybody reading this comment, I must assure you, Nightmare Time is vital. It's flown under the radar but it's absolutely essential to understand the Hatchetfield timeline and lore.
When you talked about it seeming out of character for "the guy who played Wiggly" - I'm pretty sure you were talking about Joey Richter, although fyi his character is technically called Uncle Wiley - to be a villain... he does that a lot actually. For me it seemed out of character to NOT have him play a villain (or general asshole), because of the order I watched the shows. I think I really fell in love with his acting when I started to see some of the sweeter roles, like Bug and Joey (MAMD.) It seems like he has two main typecasts.
I highly recommend you watch nightmare time, if not for the channel on your own. It really expands on the lore of hatchetfield and the "eldritch forces" :). Ive seen some people commenting on the time loop theories, but it is explained in 1 of the nightmare time episodes that hannah has the power to see other realities through dreams, where other monsters like wiggly come to hatchetfield because somehow the town itself draws bad stuff in.

starkid musicals start like 'quirky prop, funny songs' and then they hit you with 'capitalism and consumerism are a hell we are stuck at and its sucking the humanity of humans into a black hole'

this musical, as with tgwdlm, felt like more of a film to me, with characters and storylines that could be taken from a movie. it feels more mature and moving (even tho i still cry to all of them). being a starkid fan is just so so good.

a conspiracy about “what if tomorrow comes” is that basically the citizens of hatchetfield have been through that exact day multiple times, but only Hannah remembers it because of her powers. the theory goes like the day repeats itself forever until the citizens find a way to beat the god and kill wiggly. because they didn’t, at 12am the day resets and all their memories reset and it goes back to paul and emma making their way to toms house. the only reason they know it’s going to end again and all say goodbye during “what if tomorrow comes” is because hannah singing that song is her warning them that their current reality is ending and all this will be forgotten the next day. that’s where the lyrics “tomorrow will come, tomorrow won’t come, tomorrow come today” come from because how else would tomorrow ‘come today’ if today wasn’t going to start again tomorrow?

I really hope if StarKid does another Hatchetsfield musical they include Tom and Becky as rekindling their relationship because even though he betrays her, it's pretty obvious he's under mind control, and when they're sane they're really cute.

I have a theory about why Tom is the warrior. General McNamara says that Lex has a power like her sister, where she manifest things into reality.
My theory is that Tom wasn't a warrior until Lex chose him. It could have been anyone, but Lex knew and to some extent trusted Tom, and it was her powers that "woke him" from his trance.

Interesting to see someone reacting to this one, I almost forgot about it. It is the only Starkid musical where I care way more about the characters than the songs. If anything I get frustrated when the songs interrupt the story. I hope if they do a third one they bring some of these characters back.
I'm shocked there aren't more horror musicals because this one and the Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals end up being genuinely scary. Especially "Lovely Girl" in this one and the final song in the first one.
This felt like my early days of watching Starkid when I could trick friends to watching it with me. These days it’s it hard to get 30somethings to sit down for 3 hours. Watching with you was like with friends who don’t listen to my input.
The only thing that really bothered me about this version of the show is the camera work... There's so much going on on stage that we can't see because of the focus they put on certain characters... It's cool to see the closeups too, but you can tell there's a lot going on that you can't see and it would probably be really cool to see.
I think some effects shots, like Linda getting shot, might have been done outside of a normal performance, for the sake of the filming, but I'm not sure.

i prefer the guy who didn't like musicals over black friday, but it's still such a good one. i didn't know what to think of it at first (which is exactly what I felt during the guy who didn't like musicals), but by the end i quite liked it, and the second time I watched it i actually cried a LOT more than the first which is the odd starkid effect. my favorite part was dylan, definitely, and i didn't even know it was dylan until the end (how do people recognize actors so easily, i could never tell without the fake beard and wizard hat). his voice is just.. something else. i was crying 15 minutes in
I'm sure you don't remember this comment, but you should enjoy this anyways. When Black Friday first came out I was a few days late watching it so there were already thousands of comments. I learned from someone's comment that Dylan played both Dumbledore and Tom and was amazed, luckily I wasn't the only one. All of that is to say somebody saw how many of us didn't recognize him without the beard, and pointed out that we were no better than the people in Superman comics who don't recognize it's just Clark Kent without glasses. I haven't been able to view superhero content without thinking about that since.
