When i was younger my family had a kitten who jumped in the freezer and my mom didn't notice and closed it.... Luckily my dearly departed (old age) best cat ever, Mig, sat in front of that freezer and yowled until I came to check out what was up. I heard a faint mew, opened the freezer and got the kitten. She got lots of warm cuddles, and i will FOREVER be grateful that my wonderful cat Mig decided to sound the alarm to save a kitten that she didn't even particularly like... The Mig was a hero and my best friend. Im lucky to have known her.
Best cat ever, always check in anything they can access before you close it. Fridges, freezers, washing machines dryiers. If you have to leave the washing machine open to dry it, shut the door so they can't get into that room.
We had a cat that got a cactus thorn stuck in her paw, when we finally discovered what happened her paw was infected and she was limping. We smothered her with attention while she healed, spoiled her rotten. Then, down the road whenever we had to give a stern “No” for something she would lift her paw and start limping. LOL, that was several years ago honey, we know your tricks! (Of course she got hugs, but we knew what she was about!)
My one cat Daisy I have to keep away from my prickly pear cactus cause she loves I mean loves rubbing her face on plants. She once rubbed her face on it while I had her outside and I spent half an hour with a tweezers pulling all of the tiny spines out of her ear and the top of her head. My cats now have a catio so when theyre outside theyre safe and cant reach any of the cacti.
My male Bengal cat got jealous at moms computer when I worked on it for 2 days trying to get it up and running and took revenge on it by peeing on it ;) . Luckily we was finished and had just put the covers on it so nothing got damaged.
My therapist suggested I get a cat to help with my depression. Your channel is very helpful in figuring out what I need to pay attention to and how to prep my home for a feline roommate. Thank you.
This guy is a bit of a panicky helicopter mom, though. Get yourself a confident rescue cat who's lived outside and seen some shit. You won't have to wrap a cat like that in bubble wrap - he'll mostly take care of himself, and he'll do it well. Just provide food, water, heat and medical care. And cuddles, of course, but only when he's amenable.
I hope this note finds you doing better. My cats have saved me emotionally many times. I had one that was not a snuggly cat. She would lay on the back of the couch just out of reach. However, if I was sick or really down, she glued herself to my lap.
@@tessalynne6778 thanks! All of my boys have been smugglers! Haven't felt well physically for the last few days and my fur baby sticks to me like glue! They are amazing for getting us through tough times! They say neutered males care more about their people than females do? Think that depends upon the cat!
I work a veterinary emergency room and I’ve seen injuries related to everything on this list. This stuff really happens. A LOT. And you never think it will until it does. PLEASE be careful.
Hello, my cat is currently hiding UNDER the fridge. Is it safe? He's not crying or anything and I had just got him last night. But I'm worried he could get overheated or squished. But also he's been there for hours and he's not really crying. This happened earlier today and I managed to get him out because I thought he was stuck. But if he goes back, does that mean he wasn't stuck? Please help
My cat had curly whiskers for a while due to an unfortunate candle sniffing incident - glad we rescued her before she did worse damage to herself! Watch those candles!
My shorthair did this too!!! And didn’t even notice! It went out after only a single tail wag but still! Oh yeah and she also spilled an entire jar candle full of melted wax on my rug from an unfortunate jumping miscalculation too so THAT was a huge mess!!! Lol
I’m glad you said that rat poison is not humane, I know so many people who say “it’s just a mouse” or “it’s just a rat” but I have had pet rodents and they’re the sweetest little things!
That's true. Rats also scream ina tone humans can't hear. Double fascinating, like scream if they lose play or are frustrated. I'll humanely release mice and rats in exchange for kill centipedes and cockroaches.😭😭😱 I'll take the snakes and rodents any day lol.
@@JacksonGalaxy but I have no where to relocation them and well we use mouse poison the cat can't get to it but I think it's more humane then trapping them and killing them that's what I think
My cat ate a ribbon last year, and somehow through sheer luck, she pooped the whole thing out and it was all bundled up. She dodged a severe bullet. She’s now 10, going on 11 and still full of energy. She’s the love of my grandma’s and my life.
I use a C-Pap and used the Breath EO every night. Then I noticed little sores on his head around his ears. I got rid of the unsafe oils and made a Cat safe EO Kit... I only use his safe oils inside (we live in a school bus) and only use the Tea Tree Oil outside.
He is totally right about the furniture topic. I had just adopted my beautiful pure black long haired baby boy named Sithis, I went to work and when I came home. I saw my other two cats running around but didn’t see my newest baby. We searched and searched until I heard the faintest meow. I looked under my bed and the fabric lining that was attached to my bed frame was wrapped around his little neck. He was still alive but barely and we finally got him out. So I rip out any fabric under coating on all my furniture because of that scare with my baby. But the good news is he survived and is happily turning 1 in two weeks ☺️
It’s important to have concealed or covered trash cans, too! They’ll get into anything from floss to Q-tips to even dryer sheets. My cat has this obsession with eating toilet paper, so we have to keep that hidden in the bathroom cabinet, as well.
For a long time I had to have metal bins with metal lids because otherwise my cat would knock them over or open them... Happily, after a year and a half or so, plus figuring out his favourite foods, he's broken the habit.
Both of our cats, several years apart, had incidents when they almost died from eating rodents that ate poison in neighbors' yards & homes, & then got into ours. I would argue that even if you DON'T have pets you shouldn't poison rodents -- the crows in our neighborhood also died off!
"Toddlers that can reach the ceiling" is the most terrifying sounding thing. *Edit:* You can add inside furniture to that list. The other night, my new cat got bored and climbed in my dresser. I saw her sink into a drawer that was partially open and thought "oh, she's laying down." Then, I walked over and realized she crawled BEHIND the drawer. Everything was fine because I saw her go in, but if I'd just walked in the room and saw the drawer open, I would've gone to close it, which wouldn't have ended well.
I open and close all my drawers sloooooowly, because I know a little someone who likes to get in behind them. I tried to keep her out for a while, but I live in a studio that faces the street. I like her having a chance to (occasionally) hide in my closet, if the noise is overwhelming.
happened to one of mine... i opened the drawer, turned to put down what i took out and then tried to close it. it wouldn't go all the way in, so i put my hand behind thinking something from the drawer fell behind, only to feel a bunch of warm fur -.- i had to take out the drawer to get her out because she wouldn't leave. she was not hurt because i didn't push harder, but what got me worried most of all is that she didn't meow or make a sound, even when i first tried to close it. now i never turn my back on any open furniture because she also loves sneaking into closets. the other one is not interested in such things at all.
#1 Food #2 Cords (electric/blind cords) #3 Bags #4 Household chemicals #5 Prescription drugs #6 Ingestion hazards #7 Unsecure furniture #8 Heat sources #9 Plants I havent had cats as a child/teen but luckily Im very paranoid and my parental instincts kicked in, so Im always worried something will happen to them xD I always think ahead, what would the cats do with it?? Especially food is important to hide.. I have two cats that eat everything.. I even put my bin in the room next to the kitchen because they would open it to look for food.. so my house is very cat proof now xD
I'm fairly lucky with my girl cause while she's interested in everything I eat and drink, she actually doesn't like any of it. I let her smell it and she'll usually give me a look like I'm tricking her and eating something else cause it doesn't smell good to her. The only thing I'm really worried about is dairy and bread (she's obsessed with all types of bread and dough). Still if I'm not in the room I'm an anxious cat mom and just have to put everything away
Floss, I have always tried to keep it out of my house. We use tooth pic flossers. Dentist put in bags for kids, didnt think about at first. Then my cat had to have surgery and lost 40℅ of her intestine due to a "string" stuck in there. After cleaning one day I found an empty floss container, and if was mint flavored that's gonna resemble cat nip. So be very careful with strings and cats
You might add that waste paper baskets and the trash in the bathroon and sewing room/nook may contain dangerous items that the cats will fish out. Aside from thread, floss, pins, there are those plastic capital ' I 'shaped things used to attach price tage to clothes are just deadly, like fishbones but they will never digest. All these items should go into closed trash containers and get booted ASAP.
I bought a trashcan for my bathroom that you have to step on the lever to open. My little guy ate a small corner off a piece of a used sticky roller sheet from the trash and threw it back up at the beginning of the year. We were fortunate, he is ok and will be four this month.
It was craft ribbon for us. I had a pretty pintrest display of rainbow-sorted silk ribbon spooled on a dowel rod in my craft room. None of the cats bothered with it for years. Then, one day we come home to find one of the cats had unspooled some to play with it and swallowed almost 2 ft of it! Very scary surgery, but he's okay and all of my ribbon is in a closed box in the closet.
I’m in the process of rescuing a cat from the shelter. I’ve been binging your videos to make sure my house is ready for a cat. If I’m going to do this, I want to do it right!! I’ve learned so much!
Definitely the recliners. When I was little we had a kitten that was crushed after crawling under the recliner. For the last 30 years, my family would obsessively have someone check under the recliner, if we weren’t sure where the cat was, before we would let the foot rest down. It was a terrible lesson learned.
You're right Jackson this is what you missed one of the most important things a person has in their house that will kill their cat is a Himalayan salt lamp if you have one of these put them up high where your cat can't touch them with their mouth they will lick them and eat them and then they will die my friends cat didn't survive one
My cats don't touch mine oddly enough. Granted I have a mineral lick outside for the wild animals and horses, so I think the cats get all of their needs met.
I'm the one that left this comment I have a cat also and my mom has a salt lamp but we don't let our cat in the room that the salt lamp is in because at some point your cat might realize it's there and that's it I'm just not taking the risk with my cat so I keep the door closed my moms salt lamp is in
My cat hates coffee, he smells my coffee every morning and shakes his paw and walks away. Idk if paw shaking is common with cats but thats how he communicates that he doesnt like the smell of something.
I'm not sure on the paw shaking gesture. My cat loves coffee mostly for the smell, but if i put my rice milk and a little sugar in it to cool it down he sometimes acts like he wants to drink it and I have to take it away. He will drink tea if people leave it though and water ( which at least ice water is safe) and some juices. Which I try mot to let him have much cause sugar but if it's natural and a safe fruit for cats and I see him drinking the melted juice ice I usually let him finish and take it as a sign he needs his water bowl rinsed and refilled again. (Like for example I drink pom and let him smell it when it was nearly down to ice and he stuck his foot in it so I couldn't drink it and stole the rest of the like sip and a half of juice and melting ice :P at least pomegranate isn't outright dangerous though. Tea we all try to keep him out of my folks cause it annoys them and me for his health's sake
I have had multiple cats who exhibit this same behavior when they come across something they dont like. Im surprised that I havnt seen Jackson mention this in a video.
My cats usually scratch the floor like they are covering poop. They do this for food they dont like. "This food is shite" haha. I get the message kitty. It wont happen again.
When I was able to, I would get down on the floor and crawl around to see what is at cat level. For years I have checked the things you mentioned. Once I dropped one of my medications, it was a very small pill. I spent an entire day looking and moving things trying to find that pill so my cat wouldn't find it (I did find it). My mind naturally on it's own will look at something and try to figure how it could go wrong or be dangerous. Someone once told me it is not good that I look for the negative, but I have kept my cats safe by doing it.
This is so true and such a good point. It’s not being “negative” or “looking for the worst,” it’s being proactive and prepared. It’s being realistic and understanding your pet and the trouble they can get themselves into. Just like people baby proof their homes, we have to cat proof our homes! I have also spared my cats from many dangers and preventable accidents that could’ve gone horribly wrong, by being mindful and vigilant. Cats are not only toddlers that can reach the ceiling, they’re toddlers on a death mission lmao
I was cat sitting for a friend and she knocked off my pill container from the night stand and it opened and everything spilled out. It was 6 am I was very drowsy still and for a good 5 minutes I couldn't properly count my pills and I thought she had injested one. Luckily she had no interest in them, she just wanted to wake me up to feed her so she started making a racket. I almost had a heart attack
16:23 when i was really young (like 8 or 9) me and my friends would go to as many cars as we could during christmas break and check them for cats. I'm glad we never had a scenario where a cat died, but there were a few times one of our grumpy neighbors would be woken up before work by four little kids knocking on their door to tell them there was a cat in their car.
This is an amazing video Jackson! Most people think I am so over-protective of my cats because I don't have house plants, I don't burn candles, I don't shut doors and I am paranoid about threads and rubber bands on the floor. I haven't used curling ribbon for many years after we were very lucky to have one of our Persians pass a long piece on her own. We were unable to use rubber bath mats for about 15 years because one cat was addicted to eating them! I had to use the glue-down flower things! Cats are such weirdos. Most of mine will literally gag if you put a piece of roasted chicken breast in front of them, or any other people food for that matter, but they will eat the craziest stuff. You just can't be too careful.
I’ve always had much older cats, but started fostering kittens last month, and they are SO naughty. Well timed video as I never had to worry about these kinds of things
Be careful if you have stairs, please. My baby kitten fell from the second floor and we almost lost her. Now I have a big net around the perimeter, and let me tell you, she fell again. This time she just bounced back 🤦🏾♀️
same. my other 3 rescues were all older when we adopted them. never kittens. then when one passed away, a few months later we got kittens for my son to be an ESA. they find things to break and get into that the older kitties never did. and they have reinvigorated my kitties and now my elderly kitty is back to his nonsense acting like a giant kitten. oh dear!!! we call them tornadoes for a reason.
We lost a cat in a car fan belt when I was a kid. This was back in the 80's so we didn't have videos like this to help guide us. Also, one thing people should think about is doors. One of our kittens was accidentally crushed in the front door. People need to make sure they're not slamming doors when they have small animals running around! 😞 Now I am an adult with two cats and I am overly protective. Thanks for this video!
We have a man door out to the garage. It's set to close hard, ok it slams cuz I have 3 kitties who know, I swear, they are psychic & know when it doesn't close tight. When I had the kittydoor out there for 2 of the indoor/outdoor kitties. I was always frantic if the others got out. Now no outdoor kitties. But they love going thru closed doors. Am always worried about all the dangerous stuff out there. So, we have to keep them out & watch they don't get smashed trying to beat the door. 😮
My cat was a streetcat that i got as adult , thankfully she got pretty sharp survival instinct and doesn't mess with dangerous stuff. I still keep the house as safe as i can, but observing her she really go out of her way to keep safe and rarely do anything stupid. Makes me breathe easier and night.
I'm so glad I watched this; I'm about to adopt a kitten in a few weeks, and I had no idea how dangerous recliners were. Needless to say those openings are getting closed up.
This spring I saw a small dog almost get crushed to death in a recliner. It was absolutely horrible and there was nothing anyone could do until the person sitiing in the recliner who was heavyset got up which required him to put more of his weight down onto the recliner and the dog in order to stand up... The dogs screams were horrible... thankfully he survived with no permanent damage. Recliners are so comfy but i will never have one in my house.
@@jaymartinson3236 Yeah; I've even got rid of the recliner chairs since I've wrote this. Also I decided to adopt her sister too after I wrote that, because of another one of Jackson's videos, and also I heard that her sister got pretty sad looking for her the day we left. Needless to say the very next day I brought her sister home too.
Remembering half way through this video that all of this is based off of stuff he's actually seen, freaked me out. All those poor cats... Lotta stuff I would have never thought of. Whenever I get my furry friend I know what I'll be doing first. 😬
I've always lived in the northeast, never even knew they made straps to secure furniture to the wall. Even museum putty I had no idea was a thing. I have a cat and a toddler and those sound like SERIOUS life savers! Thanks Jackson!
Wish I knew this sooner, but a Plant ID app on your phone is super helpful! Some of them immediately indicate if a pet or child will get sick from it if ingested.
Relax. NOTHING will go wrong. Your new, little adopted kitten will be most interested in YOU...and will keep you busy growing him or her. Its alotta fun... and so warm and loving. BE BLESSED..WELL & HAPPY TOGETHER. AMEN. p.s. Watch if your floors are cold in winter.. their little paws on it..they, like humans..can catch cold.. the sniffles.. they are so close to ground. Keep it vacuumed and clean.. all those dust particles and dirt. Cats are clean and keep it that way...as best *they can. They also chase away any unwanted spirits in the house. The Spooks don't get past *a cat.*
@bluehippo4life: And be aware that when cats get upper respiratory infections, a.k.a colds, they can't fight them off like humans can. They need veterinary care. And, if left untreated, they can die of URIs. Please read up about how to determine when your cat shows signs of illness. One rule of thumb is when your cat won't eat for 2 days, you should call your vet and ask what could be wrong.
It's mot healthy to think that way. We'd never leave our bed if we did. All you need to do is be aware of the dangers and that you don't have them on show in your home. Don't buy recliner chairs. Don't let your cat eat chocolate.. etc. Please don't let fear ruin the point of having a pet. Some parents spend their lives obsessing about protecting the children that the child becomes a prisoner if sorts and grows up to be a fearful and unhappy child. Protect your cat but nothing will go wrong if you use Common sense. I was so worried when my cats first went outside. I live in a safe area for cats but I still worried. But keeping a cat inside that does not need to be is awful and the garden us the furthest they go. Have to watch what plants are planted and the machinery and bonfire or compost. But they love being outside so it's easy to catproof the home and garden.
I had one cat that got so excited he hit his head on the ceiling catching a fly. He looked sort of dazed while munching, so I picked him up to let him touch the ceiling to understand what had happened, and why he felt dazed. No more ceiling bumps after that.
I really enjoyed your video, and I want to add one more dangerous item, a plugged in toaster! I had a neighbor who always left the toaster plugged in, and she had a cat, the cat jumped on the counter, and turned on the toaster! The house burned down! The poor cat was badly burned, and passed away 4 days later.
Love your work, this piece too. My 12 year old cat, during her youth, once got caught on a downstroke peddle of my exercise bike. She still won’t stay nearby when I’m on it. EXERCISE rooms are hazardous to cats and other pets.
I've got another cat hazard involving window blind cords that happened to my cat. He has sitting in the window seat watching birds and his tail was swishing and the cord got wrapped around his tail and when he jumped down the cord tightened up and he was hanging by his tail in mid air screaming! Luckily I was home and released the cord wrapped around his tail. Brought him to the vet and his said his tail was permanently broken 😿 and there's nothing they can do. He was in a lot of pain and my heart broke for him. We now have cordless blinds 😻 Just another reason to keep those cords up and away or go cordless 😘🐱❤
Also check the bottom of your couch for staples! For some reason lots of couches (new and old) have lots of staple sticking out and they are very sharp.
my kitten recently tore open the fabric bottom of the boxspring and went inside and poked his neck on a staple... Thankfully he was fine and it resulted in just a tiny drop of blood. Im so grateful that it wasn't his eye. No more bedframes, the boxspring goes directly on the floor until i can afford a platform.
When renting, there isn't always a choice as to what kind of window covering you get stuck with. You can spend a few dollars at a hardware store and buy drapery and blind cord cleats to wind the cords around. The cords are not so attractive to furbabies if they don't dangle...
Many years ago my husband was vacuuming out the cold air return duct. When his back was turned one of our curious cats decided to explore that nice “tunnel under the floor” when heard a clunking sound followed from meows coming from the cellar! Luckily it was the cold air return and there was a panel we were able to remove and get her out. I’m just so glad it wasn’t a heat duct!
One of my daughter's Bengals fell out of a window while lying in the window well. The screen's spline (the rubber string-like material that holds most screens in their frames) popped out with her weight against it, the screen separated from the frame, and the cat fell from the first story window- unseen and unnoticed for some time. She had never been outdoors before so she panicked and got lost for a day but was eventually found in the eaves of a neighbor's shed. Despite a cat's amazing ability to right themselves in a fall, second story falls are the most dangerous for them because they are not in the air long enough to complete the twisting motion they use to right themselves. After my daughter's incident made me realize how unreliable window screens are, I now keep second story windows open a maximum of 2 inches so my cats simply can't fit into the window.
This is totally late but what quite a few places out where I am (with landlord permission) is they’ll actually screw a wire mesh screen into the window frame. It allows them to lean against the window a bit more, and doesn’t rip like the regular mesh
I was thinking of getting that and doing it myself but do not want to ruin rental property. I won't do it unless I'm perfectly confident how to do it then would replace if I ever moved.
My parents had a cat growing up who loved jumping in the fridge, and was sooo sneaky about it. We had to double check he wasn’t there every time we closed the door.
In case anyone is watching this video and is having a panic attack about adopting a cat - take a deep breath. Jackson brings up a ton of good points about stuff to keep away from your cats, but at the end of the day, you basically just need to put stuff away and make sure everything has its place. As soon as you're done with your cleaning products, put them away. Check the dryer before putting clothes in and/or starting it up. Put sharp objects away when you're done using them. If you limit the amount of chaos in your home, you and your cat will be okay.
Great point! It’s always a fear of mine that i may be unintentionally dissuading those on the adoption fence. I will be sure to reassure them in future videos. Thanks!
And fitness equipment! Yikes! Treadmill belts and inclines/or returning to flat or decline, exposed wheels on an elliptical ramp. Turning cranks on a bike.
Thank you, Jackson, for making this video. My emotional support dog recently had emergency surgery after consuming the fleece part of one of those cat dancer toys. They took over three feet of the fleece string from her stomach. The doctor said that if I'd left it another day, she'd have died. Now I look at all toys with an eye toward safety. I foster kittens for my local shelter and tend to collect toys. Now a lot of them, like the cat dancers, only come out during supervised playtime.
I've had my new fearless kitten try to jump into an open oven door, right past me like she had to get in there. Luckily ... The over was just turned on and, I caught her with in a split second of landing on the open door. Checked her pawls and no injuries, wow you can not be too careful.
I didn’t even think about the handles on paper bags until I saw my own cat almost strangle. As a pet sitter I am always mentioning handle safety (to cut off) especially to people that have a kitten, and people that are brand new to cat ownership. Thank you so much for the informative videos that you present.
Whenever I watch your Videos, my cat, who's still very scared since he was feral, starts grooming himself. There's something about your voice he really seems to like :D
Another dangerous thing I've expirienced: washers/dryers. We had a cat when I was a child, that climbed into the dryer when my mum's back was turned and she was filling it with dirty clothes. She just threw in the clothes on top of the cat without noticing and started the machine. Luckily she could hear a bumping sound and ran to investigate and found a wet and not very happy but unharmed cat inside the machine. Very lucky it was the dryer which could be stopped by a press of a button. Our machine machine couldn't. Though I'm sure she would've killed the power or something to get the cat out once she'd realized what was going on I remember my brother and I sitting with the cat rolled up in a towel to dry her and keep an eye on her to make sure she was ok while my mum finished the washing
Curious: Did the cat ever try to get in there again after this? What I'm really asking is do cats learn lessons. Because mine will run face first into the sliding glass door repeatedly to try and get the same lizard if I don't stop her. She's convinced each time it's going to work.
@@acidbrns She never did. I think those few seconds in the dryer was dangerous enough for her to know it was not a good idea Do you have any decorations or such on the glass door? Maybe your cat thinks it's open when running into it. If you put something on the glass (exactly like when trying to avoid birds colliding with it) then maybe it will help
@@CaptainWolffi Nothing on there now; but I had hoped that after the first time she runs into the door she'd figure it out. Nothing changed....but maybe its open now...nope. K maybe this time! nope. Now? nope. At this point I think the lizards hang out there to taunt her. I'll see about getting some stickies though, if it stops her from giving herself a concussion awesome though I suspect she might just try to attack the stickers...shes barely a year old; testing everything.
@@acidbrns At least you will be sure she doesn't think the door is open if you add stickers And I have a feeling outdoor animals love to taunt indoor cats. We have a seagull hanging out on the lamp post outside our window (1st floor so they're at eye level) . Drives our boy crazy, and the gull is loving watching him try to claw through the window to get it
When I used to drive a Ford Transit van. The times I found cat fur in a space under the bonnet (hood) that could have been designed for a cat to relax in during cold spells. Warm engine is a cat magnet. Love your videos. Thanks 😊.
My cat has literally the worst habit of crawling inside couches! Luckily after a month of searching we found a new couch without any of that horrible think black couch fabric on the bottom or back of it! Kitty proofed!
I wish I’d seen a video like this, with a warning about blinds, when I got my kitten in May. He almost died by strangulation/hanging when he got tangled in our blinds about a month ago. I was outside doing some yard work when my 5 year old son rushes out of the house frantically, saying that Rocky was choking and couldn’t breathe. I ran inside, grabbed scissors, (I wasn’t about to waste precious time trying to untangle him for the sake of saving some cheap blinds) and cut him down. I don’t even know how he managed to do it, because it wasn’t the long cords he got caught in, it was actually the short cords that go in between the slats in order for them to be able to be pulled up. Somehow, he managed to get that super tiny amount of cord DOUBLE wrapped around his neck. It was awful, he was nearly dead. His head was rolling because he’d lost all control of it, his eyes were rolling back, he was limp, etc. Luckily, he perked back up as soon as I cut him down, and has had no long term effects. But it was so scary. Thank god we were home, and my little boy knew he needed to come get me immediately to save Rocky’s life 💔
Wow! How awesome your son knew to get you, and with a sense of urgency! I’m so glad you were there to save him and got to him in time. I’m going to go check all my blinds now.
Everything you are saying is so huge! This is so important. My cats are my best friends and I think about these things all the time. I have learnt things today. Thank you so much.
I would also add windows, cause if you live in a high apartment, a cat can jump out and crash on the ground. And the windows that open slightly can also be a danger, because a cat can get stuck in it and suffocate. I open my windows only when i can have eyes on my cat.
I always had dogs, too, until I took in Merlin and then Liberty when they were orphans. Oh my gosh, cats are so different in many ways. I watched so many of his vids to get up to speed. : )
All of this is the number one reason I never leave home without saying goodbye to my cat. I can make sure she's fine and that I didn't accidentally lock her into a closet or something. And it has happened before (although I was home and tend to once in a while look for my cat just for peace of mind if nothing else)
One of my kittens ended up getting into the washing machine! Thankfully she managed to get out of the part where the water was so she didn't drown, but it was so frightening. She was okay in the end, and she's full-grown now with no more washer incidents!
Im one of the lucky ones... My cat has teached me a lot... And he actually doesn't mess with my stuff... When he was a baby i got him a lot of toys, now, he's 12 years-old and he doesn't care much for them 😂.. He's also a great therapist with other cats.. Helped out other cats socializing and lost fear... Im so proud of him ! Also he learned to open the fridge, the draws, the closets... I have so many stories.. Luckily he and i never got into a bad situation but a lot of funny ones.. Btw, i can't have fishes. He gets them out just for fun....
But children DO put everything in their mouths, just like pets do. You need to think of this, before you have a child or pet. Children are more likely than adults to have “pica” eating disorder, and not just cats are driven to eat strange things!
You are not crazy lol, thank you for all the tips!!! I like how you compate cats to toddlers, it is simply because they are live beings that can not take care of themselves and ignore lots of stuff. That is why we gotta take care of them
I moved recently and told my landlord I had to cat proof the house before I moved in. That was an unfamiliar term for them. It took a couple of days. There was steel wool everywhere my cat eats that 😳😬
I would like to add another thing. Windows or tilted windows can be extremely dangerous. My mother’s friend lost one of her cats because she wanted to get out through a tilted window but got stuck. Idk how common those kind windows are in America but in Europe they’re pretty common. So make sure your cat can’t reach tilted windows or just don’t leave them unattended.
Jay Moseley That’s not what I’m trying to argue. I just wanted to let people know that those windows can potentially be deadly because even if you don’t let your cat outside they might still try to and they might try to get out through a tilted window. I really don’t see the point of your comment
Yes! I know 2 cats that lost their lives because of that stupid tilted windows. Everything was fine for years but it can take only one hour ride to the grocery shop to loose your furry friend. Those widows are extremely dangerous and yet very popular in some countries 😭😭😭
@@hi-lm5vl I don’t think you have them in the US but they’re pretty common in Europe. Basically if you want fresh air but don’t want to open the window all the way you can tilt them inward. But cats can get stuck between the window and the frame. The opening is pretty big at the top but pretty narrow at the bottom, that’s why they’re so dangerous
Great video. Regarding the anti-freeze warning...I thought cats couldn't taste sweet. Also, manufacturers have been adding a bittering agent to anti-freeze in all 50 states since about 2010 to keep pets and children safe.
I had went to the grocery store and left a bag of sugar out TWICE and my kitty chewed thru the bag and ate some sugar!!! She was licking her lips afterwards like she enjoyed it
Good people of TH-cam I know like your kitties you're curious but please believe the kind lady and don't go Pepsi challenging the #@£& out of antifreeze to see if it's sweet or bitter lol.
When I was making my documentary "Adorable Cats of Persia, 1," about street cats, I noticed so many cats limping, blinded in one eye, or badly scratched. A few even had their skin and fur hanging. Some of them were because of fighting. But as this very good video clip discusses, they are not always very careful animals. For example, sometimes they totally zoomed out that they were sitting in the middle of the street and a car was approaching.
When I was a teen, there was a stray kitten that showed up. It climbed up into my dad's truck's engine bay. Fortunately, I saw it disappear under the truck and we were able to get it out but the idea of another cat getting up into it and then him turning it on terrifies me For my indoor cats, I don't know how I convinced them the counters are a no go zone, but they almost never give me trouble in trying to get up there
I lived on a farm for a short time. Farmer used to turn his great big ( expensive) machines on for a second, then off, and wait for the shed cats to leave.
He's definitely right about all of this. One of my cats I suspect has developed Pica because she tends to find plastic wrappings, plastic bags or plastic products like tape, etc and eats them. Will definitely need to take her to the vet soon to see what we can do for her. Also, as kittens both of my cats have gotten stuck in the fridge when my father-in-law was not looking. Thankfully he heard their cries and took them out of the fridge before it was too late. Definitely watch those babies because they get into everything! Everything here is a lesson learned and if you can avoid these issues, please become aware and take action. Take care of your pets as you would a human.
My cat has pica with plastic bags and wraps. He was rescued from the streets in Dubai, and he probably had to eat from discarded food in bin bags etc. However, this has translated into a compulsive behaviour. I spend a lot of time ensuring that he has no access to plastics, but the moment he finds any he chews away. I'm working on this, but accessing Bach remedies for cats is almost impossible in the UK (unless you are very well off!).
@@roowyrm9576 I was totally unaware there was a remedy. I heard from Jackson once that all you can really do is cat proof your home and make sure there are no plastics or materials your cat can eat. I've had my cat since she was a baby. She didn't develop this habit until she was older. I still have to take her to the vet to express my concerns and ask for more advice. I'm pretty sure she has Pica. It's pretty obvious.
@@yazzybananas3106 The remedy I was referring to was one of JG's blends to help cats recover from trauma etc. Because of his time on the streets, and various other things, Kory was deeply traumatised when he came to me. We are working together, and he's slowly getting better, but, in his case, the pica is a sign of his deeper seated issues.
Cats with PICA most likely have parasites and due to digestive issues are malabsorbed. They seek non-food items because their body is not absorbing nutrition from food so they look to get it anywhere they think they can. They need to be detoxed first via fasting to give their G.I. tracts a rest and then fed a QUALITY RAW if not - at minimum 100% wet diet with as few additives and chemicals as possible.. Their eliminations need to be monitored. @Roo Wyrm @ Yazzie Bananas.
Thank you for this video. I haven't had cats since I was little, and they were outdoor cats. Now, I'm about to get an indoor one to help with my depression. This video is very helpful.
Excellent video. Yes, cats are curious, want to play, think anything is "game," just like babies and toddles. Child/Cat proofing one's house, making available exciting, entertaining, yet safe toys or household items is essential for safety and a "happy household."
Catastic! I will share this on our page over and over again, and include the link in our adoption packets. So many people roll their eyes and tell me I just worry too much! Maybe they will believe you! One thing to add from an experience we just had, is those foam playroom mats (or anti-fatigue mats) $5000 obstruction removal/resection surgery for one of our fosters last month! Fortunately a second foster passed the piece he ingested. They like to chew on them! They are non-toxic, and most spit out, but some don't! We got rid of them!
Please don’t assume my age, and I don’t want to start a fight in the replies, but if you make the choice to bring a cat into your house then you are responsible for the cat and it is your responsibility to keep it safe and out of danger, same goes for a child, I’m sorry if I offended you or made you mad
I had a cat that we found in the hood of our car as a kitten. We had her for 17 years, before we had to put her down. I should check before I start my car. That's a good idea.
MY SISTER STARTED HER CAR ONE MORNING AND THERE WAS A YOUNG CAT LAYING ON THE ENGINE . THE FAN BELT DID N'T GET THE CAT .THE FAN BLADE DID. FROM THEN ON SHE HONKED HER HORN BEFORE STARTING THE CAR .
One of the best videos I've ever seen in my life!! When I was a teenager, believe it or not my multitude of LSD experiences expanded my mind about cats, and I've been studying and loving them for five decades ever since... It would shatter your heart if i gave you the details of how many HORRIBLE heartbreaking accidents I've seen happen to cats over my many many years.. and almost all of them could have easily been avoided if the humans exercised more caution, and were more willing to "be that pain in the ass" and allow people to label them as paranoid... The most unlikely unbelievable unimaginable horrifying mindbending impossible accidents became possible, just with everyday household situations... I've already been exercising all of these tips since I was 14, including but not limited to the cords attached to horizontal blinds and the secret entryways into furniture (and don't even get me started on recliners) Jackson, I'm going to be honest with you : You used to turn me off...... You really did... It was the facial hair thing.. I couldn't get over the visual, and I hate to admit it but I used to think you were a douchebag... Now that you have toned it down with the facial hair and look more normal, you are much more effective because you're more embraceable.... I realize it's a sad statement on how primal humans can be, but we are visual animals and them for some reason the strange intricate facial hair was a hindrance no matter how much I agreed with what you were saying... Not only are you more commercially embraceable, but you are also a lot better looking without the Venetian garden carved into your face... Lol I really really really really really really respect you and admire you and look up to you for your knowledge and experience that actually surpasses mine (and that's probably the first time I've ever said that to anybody in my life)
This is the most EXCELLENT video! Ever!!I love how you present everything. Perfectly done! Thanks so much for being who you are and for caring for cats so much. I totally feel that love for them. Lost my Lady cat just this past September 9th. On my Mom’s first birthday that she was not here for. My mother died this Feb 2021. Then I lost Lady. I can’t tell you how much Lady meant to me. I had a special bond with her and she comforted me after I lost my Mom I was extremely close to. We have Lady’s sister cat named Roxy but she is bonded to my daughter. Sorry too much info! I just had rotator cuff surgery too! Anyway I am working on trying to build a closer relationship with Roxy but she is about 12 years old! Thanks again. Love your videos
My husband and I foster cats and I always give "new parents" a huge list of all these dangers. Yes, some people think it is excessive to the point of neurosis but it covers all the things you have mentioned because we've seen most all these dangers in action, too. As a person commented, drawers are another bad one - dresser and kitchen drawers as cats will get in behind the open drawer and then get squished as you close it. Another thing that happened to me first hand was, as I opened the dish washer, between the bottom of the door and kick plate a gap became available, a kitten crawled half way in, I closed the door and squashed her! It was terrifying. I thought I had broken her ribs or crushed her organs. we rushed her to the vet and she was okay but that scared me so badly, I never forgot the lesson. Also, toilets - never leave the lid open. Kittens can fall in and not be able to get out, thus drowning.
One of my cats brings plastic bags into my garden, he doesn’t play with or in them, just brings them into the garden. Not sure what the fascination is or if he’s doing his bit for the environment 😆
what I've become really paranoid about w my cats is making sure they don't come in contact w even traces of chocolate, onions, and garlic that i eat. i was washing hands many times a day before it was recommended by CDC
@@floxy709 I've used it to get rid of a terrible case of conjunctivitis in my cat and have a video to prove it.. Don't buy into the fearmongering/indoctrination of western medicine. When I eventually found her I really didn't know how long she'd been there, i just knew it was hours not days. Fortunately no harm was done but after that incident I always checked the drawers before I closed them.

That's beautiful

OMG, that story... Blessings to you.🙏💕💐😻
I'm so sorry for your loss
Hahaha

Thun do get a cat it will help with depression! My cat almost strangled with apt blinds thanx to a bratty kid! My cat needs a pica check!
I hope your doing well! My therapist also suggested the same thing and I'm currently preparing
I hope this note finds you doing better. My cats have saved me emotionally many times. I had one that was not a snuggly cat. She would lay on the back of the couch just out of reach. However, if I was sick or really down, she glued herself to my lap.

My cat once set her tail on fire from a candle and she didn't even notice because her fur is so long.
So yeah..candles.
Lol
Hahaha my cat did this too and had no reaction except to the bad hair smell!
BakaShoujoNyan why not get those battery operated ones? I'd never have candles here! Plus apartment live
Candles should just be totally banned and not even because of cats, how about FIRES?
I’m glad you said that rat poison is not humane, I know so many people who say “it’s just a mouse” or “it’s just a rat” but I have had pet rodents and they’re the sweetest little things!
That's true. Rats also scream ina tone humans can't hear. Double fascinating, like scream if they lose play or are frustrated.
I'll humanely release mice and rats in exchange for kill centipedes and cockroaches.😭😭😱
I'll take the snakes and rodents any day lol.
The least humane rodent trap I ever use... is owning a cat. 😬
Mouse poison isn't humane it's not that bad mouse traps are Bad think about that

Thank God he was ok.
Poor baby.
I hope Sithis is doing well. Please inform him that he can expect the Emperor's soul shortly.

Nikki Berry That’s the truth!!
ive seen worse trembles
I open and close all my drawers sloooooowly, because I know a little someone who likes to get in behind them. I tried to keep her out for a while, but I live in a studio that faces the street. I like her having a chance to (occasionally) hide in my closet, if the noise is overwhelming.
My cat goes into the dresser often. I close it very gently if I am not sure if she is in there or not
happened to one of mine... i opened the drawer, turned to put down what i took out and then tried to close it. it wouldn't go all the way in, so i put my hand behind thinking something from the drawer fell behind, only to feel a bunch of warm fur -.- i had to take out the drawer to get her out because she wouldn't leave. she was not hurt because i didn't push harder, but what got me worried most of all is that she didn't meow or make a sound, even when i first tried to close it. now i never turn my back on any open furniture because she also loves sneaking into closets. the other one is not interested in such things at all.

I havent had cats as a child/teen but luckily Im very paranoid and my parental instincts kicked in, so Im always worried something will happen to them xD I always think ahead, what would the cats do with it?? Especially food is important to hide.. I have two cats that eat everything.. I even put my bin in the room next to the kitchen because they would open it to look for food.. so my house is very cat proof now xD
That was "9 household hazards", by cat-a-gory.
Purrr-fect🙌🏾 Thank You🤗
@Jay Moseley dang my cats never go outside due to my paranoia xD come on.. I always double check locks and windows..
Thank you so much, you saved me 22 minutes 🙏🏼
Amazing one to point out!!! Thank you and I’m glad all is well.
Good point. Thanks for sharing
You’ll be a great cat mom! It’s obvious from ur dedication to learn about them. Good luck with your newest family member!
How's your cat doing? I got my first one yesterday, it's a little 3 month old british shorthair
Definitely the recliners. When I was little we had a kitten that was crushed after crawling under the recliner. For the last 30 years, my family would obsessively have someone check under the recliner, if we weren’t sure where the cat was, before we would let the foot rest down. It was a terrible lesson learned.
That was a good one - i just bought us a recliner - first one, didnt even think about cats ( we have two). Now i warned my husband
You're right Jackson this is what you missed one of the most important things a person has in their house that will kill their cat is a Himalayan salt lamp if you have one of these put them up high where your cat can't touch them with their mouth they will lick them and eat them and then they will die my friends cat didn't survive one
WOW good one! I absolutely forgot about salt lamps. Thanks on behalf of everyone here!
I'm so glad I read this because I have been wanting to buy one! But I'll get something else instead:)
Wow I have a large one!
My cat paw shakes at snow. General displeasure perhaps?
@@ziblot1235 I've had cats who did that about food they didn't like. It seems like they were trying to bury it! 🤣
"It's not good that you look for the negative."
Bruh.
When I drop a pill the first thing I do is put the cats in another room and won't let them out until I found it.
They Really are I adopted too kitten with their mum and oh boy is is busy in this house they go everywhere 😂
Yeap, naughty is the word. Foster failed 2 boys, one of them us soooo mischievous 🤣
They arnt naughty they are children who are trying to explore and learn. Being naughty requires intent.
Same.
my cats are also from the street survived and they don't do anything mischievous.
My dog on whole quite smart that sence doest try anything
@@LadyViolet1 that’s amazing of you to do !! You’re doing great already!
Have always taught my children, cats are like toddlers. You just confirmed I was not being neurotic. THANKS!
Remembering half way through this video that all of this is based off of stuff he's actually seen, freaked me out. All those poor cats...
Lotta stuff I would have never thought of. Whenever I get my furry friend I know what I'll be doing first. 😬
The recliner one really painted a horrific picture...
Great video.
One more: My cat stuck his arm into the gap that opens at the hinge of the refrigerator! Lucky no broken bones.
Omg mine do this constantly!!!! I’m so scared I’m gonna catch em
I also think about any door's hinge side.
I've always lived in the northeast, never even knew they made straps to secure furniture to the wall. Even museum putty I had no idea was a thing. I have a cat and a toddler and those sound like SERIOUS life savers! Thanks Jackson!
Also had never heard of those things. Hello from Australia.
Thanks once again Jackson for stellar advice on keeping our precious fluffballs safe!
Wish I knew this sooner, but a Plant ID app on your phone is super helpful! Some of them immediately indicate if a pet or child will get sick from it if ingested.

Being a first time cat owner, thanks so much for your helpful video! 🤗
@@marleenchin1108 LOL why are you replying to my comment and not just making your own
y'all silly
Anonymoose yeah that’s what inspired my comment. i love that movie
Oh my gosh, I’m adopting my kitten in a month and these hazards got my anxiety popping off 😭 sooo many things could go wrong at any time 🥺😩
Blue hippo check out the foods cats can't have! U will do fine as a cat parent! Being aware is half the battle!
@@lisamay5649 thanks for the tip! My fur baby has severe asthma! Due to being a premee! He also gets infections easily so I have to be clean!
"They're like toddlers that can reach the ceiling." I have never heard a more accurate description in my life.
Every toast has some safety, no?
How did that burn down the house? They usually only stay on for like 2 minutes...
Could they not amputate his tail to end the pain?
Could have been wrapped round his NECK! ALWAYS TIE THEM UP HIGH! (Blind cords - not the cats 🐈!)
I found my cats inside folded sofa beds, dressers. With a head stuck inside a small trash can... They are curious, silly creatures! I love this video
CAT-egories, I see what you did there.
😹
Christine Banek Totally came here to say that 😂
Not to mention the nine categories as in nine lives
Great advice! Don't forget about cosmetics and cosmetic brushes that have powder left on them. 🐈😺
I always thought about my cat eating a rodent with poison in it's system. No poison around my house and I am glad you pointed that out.
My cat swallowed some of that too! I got accident insurance for her after that and stuck all the toys in a drawer 😲
My kitten just sat and watched this entire video with me! They have good taste, no?
Yes!! My cat comes over and starts to try to cuddle!
Though I'm sure she would've killed the power or something to get the cat out once she'd realized what was going on
I remember my brother and I sitting with the cat rolled up in a towel to dry her and keep an eye on her to make sure she was ok while my mum finished the washing
I think those few seconds in the dryer was dangerous enough for her to know it was not a good idea
Do you have any decorations or such on the glass door?
@@acidbrns At least you will be sure she doesn't think the door is open if you add stickers
And I have a feeling outdoor animals love to taunt indoor cats. We have a seagull hanging out on the lamp post outside our window (1st floor so they're at eye level) . Drives our boy crazy, and the gull is loving watching him try to claw through the window to get it
LOL what I want to know is why was the mom putting dirty clothes in the dryer??
When I used to drive a Ford Transit van. The times I found cat fur in a space under the bonnet (hood) that could have been designed for a cat to relax in during cold spells. Warm engine is a cat magnet. Love your videos. Thanks 😊.
Better safe than sorry with our sacred furry family 💗 Thank you for all your time helping us all to be the best guardians we can be ✨
IM GETTING A CAT FOR MY BIRTHDAY BECAUSE OF THE KNOWLEDGE YOU GAVE ME TYYYYYY!!! (P.S My mom was very impressed with.)
Right call! Who cares about some blinds?
Happy to read that Rocky was save.
Especially because we have two tomcats here called Rambo and Rocky. 🙂
I approve! But, in return, I recommend keeping your catnip away from your Hoomans. Best places to keep it: under the stove and under the refrigerator.
I'm picking up a rescue cat tomorrow, and these videos are so helpful in preparing myself. I'm so excited. Thank you
Everything you are saying is so huge!
I’ve always had dogs and now have 3 kittens. They get into everything! Thanks so much for these reminders!
I always had dogs, too, until I took in Merlin and then Liberty when they were orphans. Oh my gosh, cats are so different in many ways. I watched so many of his vids to get up to speed. : )
I always check under my recliner when my cats in the room
Yeah, if you won’t let your child eat a button or some string, same rule applies for the kitties or pups🌈🤷🏻♀️🐈
But children DO put everything in their mouths, just like pets do. You need to think of this, before you have a child or pet. Children are more likely than adults to have “pica” eating disorder, and not just cats are driven to eat strange things!
Not to sound like an ahole, but I remember Most kids eating all of those at some point 😅 either from stories or kids I knew.
Blind cords are dangerous for kids too and should always be kept out of reach.
Yes I know a cat who hung itself due to these windows :(
What are tilted windows?
@@hi-lm5vl I don’t think you have them in the US but they’re pretty common in Europe. Basically if you want fresh air but don’t want to open the window all the way you can tilt them inward. But cats can get stuck between the window and the frame. The opening is pretty big at the top but pretty narrow at the bottom, that’s why they’re so dangerous
Jackson, I love your videos so much. They are both educational and entertaining.
She was licking her lips afterwards like she enjoyed it
Could be the smell that attracts her.
Good people of TH-cam I know like your kitties you're curious but please believe the kind lady and don't go Pepsi challenging the #@£& out of antifreeze to see if it's sweet or bitter lol.
The bittering agent is probably to keep spouses from poisoning each other. It has been a big problem.
@@incog99skd11 lololol
Husband: Is there any angostura bitter left for a long vodka?
Wife: Looks at antifreeze, "Yes, yes there is"
When I was making my documentary "Adorable Cats of Persia, 1," about street cats, I noticed so many cats limping, blinded in one eye, or badly scratched. A few even had their skin and fur hanging. Some of them were because of fighting. But as this very good video clip discusses, they are not always very careful animals. For example, sometimes they totally zoomed out that they were sitting in the middle of the street and a car was approaching.
Thank you cat daddy. We need more of u in our lives
Just adopted my orange boy Beignet, thank you for the advice! Fixing things right now as you speak!
When I was a teen, there was a stray kitten that showed up. It climbed up into my dad's truck's engine bay. Fortunately, I saw it disappear under the truck and we were able to get it out but the idea of another cat getting up into it and then him turning it on terrifies me
For my indoor cats, I don't know how I convinced them the counters are a no go zone, but they almost never give me trouble in trying to get up there
I lived on a farm for a short time.
@@emilybh6255 my cat has been checked and treated for parasites, and eats a mostly raw, 80%wet diet.
Your videos have helped me so much being a first time cat momma❤️
@Sara that is the wrong mentality, you should care about a cat just as much as a human, both are lives
They’re not “just a cat”
I've already been exercising all of these tips since I was 14, including but not limited to the cords attached to horizontal blinds and the secret entryways into furniture (and don't even get me started on recliners)
Jackson, I'm going to be honest with you :
You used to turn me off......
Lol
I really really really really really really respect you and admire you and look up to you for your knowledge and experience that actually surpasses mine (and that's probably the first time I've ever said that to anybody in my life)
This is the most EXCELLENT video! Ever!!I love how you present everything. Perfectly done! Thanks so much for being who you are and for caring for cats so much. I totally feel that love for them.

Thank you for doing this. I am writing a message when I see a kitty video with dangerous things.
A tiny bit of garlic is wonderful when used correctly for medicinal purposes.
@@emilybh6255 not for cats/dogs it isnt
@@floxy709 I've used it to get rid of a terrible case of conjunctivitis in my cat and have a video to prove it.. Don't buy into the fearmongering/indoctrination of western medicine. They only want you to not go near it BECAUSE IT WORKS to make any mammal well with certain specific problems. If you fix the problem yourself, and do a better job doing it using methods that the body recognizes that don't cause dangerous side effects, they make no money.
@@emilybh6255 I hope your cat runs away from you, I hope no other animal comes close to you let alone become your pet, I hope you get the help you need, I hope the liver damage your cat received bc of your actions wont cause it any problems.
Emily BH jackson hearted their comment you literally harmed your cat you buffoon
you are amazing Jackson galaxy!❤️
Thank you Jackson! I'm glad I watched the entire video! It is so helpful! I love kitties too.
My first cat once climbed into one of the drawers in the base of my spare bed and went to sleep. When I eventually found her I really didn't know how long she'd been there, i just knew it was hours not days. Fortunately no harm was done but after that incident I always checked the drawers before I closed them.
