HYDROPLANE CRASH in Karting...

  • My kart hydroplaned and the crash that followed was unavoidable... The lap before this, I rolled off the throttle and onto the brake in a slower manner which prevented the weight from transfering too quickly. The rear tires became too light and locked basically instantly. I made sure to keep the kart pointed straight as long as possible, and I pumped the brakes to try and get the rear tires gripped up again. But once I knew the kart wasn't going to stop in time, I let the kart spin backwords so I wouldn't hurt my legs with a frontal impact, and finally I went full throttle to dampen the impact. Hydroplaning is one of those sensations you have to experience to fully respect....

My cousin Jimmy is like a GOD at racing karts in the wet. At our local track, in the main events you can basically swap out drivers, with the cost of losing the time that’s lost on pit road. Basically, Jimmys friend Nathan will race most of the time, but when it rains, stg jimmy gets in and he can pick up 3-4 seconds from the other racers to everyone else. he slides around and freaking drifts around turns, going like 40. it’s insane bruh

There are two ways to go around a corner with a kart on a track that's wet.
      1) drive slowly to the inside, hook the right side of the wheels on the inside curb and slowly accelerate so that your wheels don't come off the curb otherwise the kart will slide all the way to the outside.
      2) Be on the outside the whole time, brake to the appropriate speed and go through the entire turn on the outside line with a gentle feel for the throttle.

    • @jasono2139
      @jasono2139 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Honestly, I'd like to see these two approaches because my intuition says going a little sideways would help drag the tires through more water (and would slow down faster) than steering straight into it where the front tires are hydroplaning and the back tires don't get much grip anyways because it's wet.
Plus the side walls are less likely to push water beneath the tire.

Honestly i find the best thing to do for lap times is not use your brakes. For one in the wet and dry braking at all shifts the weight from the back making it squirly. But also just ustable in general.
Its like hitting the apex or just yanking the steering wheel. Hitting the apex is much smoother. The smoother you drive the more traction you can retain as once you lose the traction it takes alot more to get it back!
The only time id really use brakes is if its a super tight turn and you need to kinda pivot. Not quite drift.

U can fully turn the wheels INTO the spin (turn front of wheels towards the direction you want to stop going!) once you are almost 90 degrees into your spin and it will flip your front back out to where you wanted it. Because they are actually rolling slightly backwards at that point. Takes some practice. Works wonders. When tires slide they act like ice skates or skis. Adding throttle when sliding makes your back wheels loose more traction and you will spin more. I got to confirm all of this in blizards on frozen freeways a few times. Ice sliding is basically the same as water sliding or high speed dry sliding. Losing traction is losing traction.

TAG karts are extra touchy in the wet as they typically only have a set of rear brakes - no fronts. This means they’re set up for the rear to step out and spin you round facing backwards if you hit the brakes too hard, whereas a vehicle with front brakes would more likely lock up into a straight line.

you’re supposed to jump up and down inside the vehicle to retract the tires, a science teacher did this study at my university, they had a simple plastic tarp on the road and filled it with water, when we hydroplaned he instructed all 4 of us in the car mechanism to bounce up and down in the seats, which ended up giving the car traction once we all came down from the bounce at the same time.

This is compounded by the short wheelbase, and not having any quick connection and that can accelerate or D accelerate the wheels on all sides. Like usually the break is only connected to one maybe two wheels. And the engine is connected to the wheels through a pretty loose chain and a clutch.

At pf in the wet at that hairpin you want to be right on the the right hand side of the track break then move into the middle of the track and then sim for the outside of the track while forcing your kart to understeer and then when it catches and the kart turns get on the power and of you go to the second hairpin 👍

Got a solution for ya, If you buy some small enough gravel and keep a bag of It on your cart (kind of like a chalk bag for rock climbing) just toss some on one of your front tiers and it should break the water tension enough to spin you out, That way you don't go flying at fifty miles an hour into the barrier if you can't gain control in time

I went to a go kart track after it had drizzled a bit, enough to get the whole track wet, they were the slow, 15-20 mph karts, but they were still on slicks, I shot out to the first corner expecting grip like you would from a go kart but it took turn 1 like a top fuel dragster would have, wheels went full lock and I was going straight, it was a 1 wheel drive kart but around right handers I could slide it around the corner easily, it made me realize how bad slicks are in the wet but I want to do it again some day, it was fun

One time at buckmore park there was so much rain there was a literal river running across the start finsh straight, so every time you went over it the kart would aqua plane, the revs would skyrocket and you'd let jesus take the wheel and hope you came out the otherside facing forward. If you were behind someone youd be blind as well from all the spray, definitely the wildest conditions Ive ever driven in

I wouldn’t go full throttle, 50-75% would be far more effective. Spinning(without traction) wheels have less grip than stationary ones. So the closer you get that to stationary, without actually being stationary, the better.

This may sounds crazy, so correct me if I'm wrong.
Making the kart turn ASAP, and then full throttle could save the driver.
My reasoning is that giving a full throttle will "scoop out" water fast enough to gain traction.
Of course there's a huge risk of spinning 360 without any control; the 180deg turn had to be made rater smoothly.

If it's initiated by braking, then it's almost certainly not hydroplaning/aquaplaning. This video shows simply locking up and sliding. It feels very different in the wet because of the shape of the slip/grip curve - in the wet, and the cold, the drop off after the peak is very steep. What this means in practise is your speed won't decrease once you're locked up or sliding, and the car won't have a natural (or encouraged, with opposite lock) tendency to straighten up due to the differential of slip angles on all four wheels, again as we see here.
Hydroplaning/aquaplaning (same thing, different names) is when the tyre can't clear enough water, the water builds up in front of the tyre in a wedge shape, and at a high enough speed the pressure between the tyre and this wedge of water becomes great enough for the car to climb the wedge and rise up above the layer of water, where it starts skimming across the water. The rotation of the tyre and its slip angle or percentage has very little to do with this, so it won't start with braking or acceleration - it's almost all to do with speed, depth of water, and then the width of the tyre and any tread and depth of that tread that it has. In windsurfing it's how we go fast, by shifting out of displacement mode into a mode where we skim across the water, and the same applies to powerboats and surfing. Again, it's a function of force and area.
The other hint this isn't aquaplaning is that if you are aquaplaning, then as soon as speed decreases the tyres will drop back down onto the road again and they'll be a sudden change in handling, rather than this more characteristic lock up and spin, which is far more consistent and graceful, as seen here. The aquaplaning stage is often just a fleeting moment, before aero drag slows the car to a speed where the tyres grip again, although the slip angle of the car's new attitude (or the force applies to the brakes) can leave the car in a situation where it's spinning out of control once back in touch with the tarmac.

I did this in my car with bald tires on the rear. It cut loose at 40 mph and I hit the ditch sideways. The people who saw me swore that I rolled my car but there was zero damage. Turns out I went so far up on two wheels and spun around at the same time that it looked like a roll-over.
