@@h0welss In the US at least the X30/Rotax use the same tires as Shifter: Evinco Reds. KA100 and LO206 get Evinco Blues (harder, longer lasting). The only difference between TAG and shifter in the US is lack of front brakes on TAG and only 1 gear and down a few horsepower depending on class to enable a wider powerband. The chassis and tires are identical, some people will even remove or disable the front brakes and shift lever and use a former shifter chassis in TAG. Lower kart classes generally run a softer chassis that wouldn't hold up to the grip in TAG/shifter.

Race KZ's and the best tips besides the basics are that you have to push down upon the steering wheel as hard as you possibly can at all times to control the kart. You need to engine brake just as much as you use the actual brakes. (downshift at the same time as braking) Set the brake bias to the fronts as much as you can handle, and the driving line is completely different than anything else. Racing a KZ at pace is like controlling a demon

I used to race kz2 carts which would be very similar to this i think and they were scary AF drifting on 3 wheels through corners and my neck even after 2 seasons would only last like an hour before my head would feel like a ball on a string. Great video and great driving for someone whos tried it first time must have been a amazing experience! the hardest part about driving shifter carts is keeping that thing in right revrange there is sooo many shifts in a lap and if you miss one ur fukd
    Edit: what an amazing track!

I did two test days on a KZ2 once, and gotta admit, especially after putting on a set of new yellow Vegas, I was fucking done at the end of the 2nd day. At the time I was an active Rotax Max racer for the last 3 years already but the KZ was a whole different animal, it was so insanely fast and the Vegas gripped so much more than the Mojos it was ridicolous lol, not even a new set of D3 Mojos were even close to the grip level of a used Vega. Never got to race a KZ2 but it was fun as hell to test it

Spent a lot of years rowing 6-speed 2-stroke 125's around motocross tracks. It's the best soundtrack in my head. They will over-rev (unless those have a hard rev-limiter), and mid-corner it is sometimes better to hold off on the up-shift you are tempted to make in case you do get a bit sideways. If it falls off a bit, you are still in the right gear, plus the tapering power is a bit of traction control.

The popular competition classes here in the U.S. are the Four Stroke LO206s (slow, but fun), TAGs (you have to drive them right to be quick), and Shifters. For them you have to hang on and really be on your game. Quite common here. Now if you want a real thrill, try one on a long track. A slow corner is still 80 kph and the draft is incredible!

Great video! fascinated by the action of the front end re: smoothness. I might be wrong but I think a slightly higher (slower) steering ratio and a tad more castor angle might help a lot - counter-intuitively a less sharp set-up will decrease ultimate sensitively of control and instant turn-in but will probably improve lap times. Better handling often is more important than ultimate performance.

Wow I enjoyed this vid. What a track.
Having raced to two IKF championships in a traditional single speed 100cc Kart 30 years ago, now trying shifter karts, YES they are BUTAL. All the same basics, but all the timing is off. I also got a 100cc kart and my muscle memory & timing all works, but the shifter is like graduating and having to learn all over again.
What I find that works pretty well, for me, is to do enough laps at a track in my 100cc til I'm super comfortable and up to quali speeds, attacking the track. Then switch to the shifter and take all the same lines, but just adjust my timing, and to the speed. If I just try driving the track in the shifter, I literally am just track-daying it and "driving". In one day I don't get to attack the track unless I do the 100cc first.
And yes the shifter takes A LOT more physical strength and stamina to drive for any amount of time. But like riding a 450 mx bike, the power is just SOOOO darn addictive.

KZ2 is just soooooo much more fun than the rest .... i do think youll have a hard time going back to the single gear after this - this is like a drug, once you go KZ, you just dont go back.

Nice one Steve - only one minor indiscretion, and that when you were looking so solid in the wet (nothing unusual there 😉) - you need to get back in to a competitive kart......

Awesome content! I would be interested to see the footage from the professionals POV to compare how he drives against Super Gt
