Their ability to be a band after they got divorced has to go down in history. You can see their connection on Little Ghost when they are looking each other in the eyes and smiling singing the song. I wouldn't call myself a fan of the White Stripes, but I have a real soft spot for them after they played a show in Iqaluit, the capital of Canada's northern Nunavut territory. I can't say with absolute certainty, but I suspect they are the only major label act to have ever played a show there, and it was a big deal for the community. Jack and Meg showed a tremendous amount of respect to the Inuit that live there, both in playing the show and sitting with elders to hear stories of the people. They sure as heck didn't make much money doing a show for 600 people given the cost of getting there. You gotta love people that are that generous with themselves.
Yea. That Canada tour was AMAZING. HE EVEN PLAYED A cover of the traditional song, CATFISH BLUES, (HENDRIX,GOVT MULE also greatly cover this song) BUT JACK AND MEG, PLAYED THE SONG, ON A BOAT!! LIKE u could still see them from shore, but not hear that well. I'd give ANYTHING to hear the full version of Jack covering CATFISH blues. Warren Haynes in Gov't Mule covered that song...and just ripped on that song. Easily one of the best, guitarists still playing from another generation...
Damn I did not know that!!! My respect for them has grown tenfold after reading that, such a wonderful gesture by the band and their management team. I would like to think that they knew that what they would get in memories from that trip would outdo the type of money they would make playing to 3000 at Carnegie Hall.
When they were in Winnipeg for that tour they got on a city bus with a guitar and tambourine and played music for the riders on the way down to the Forks Market. They then found an old man busking and Jack and Meg played backup while he played lead and sang. So cool.
I have reason to believe and am highly confident we are getting a reunion soon. Likely a surprise return at an award show and then an album or SOMETHING along that vibe. Mark my words.
They are both coked out of their gourd in this performance. I doubt a reunion is happening. Jack has said many times that Meg is not keen on the idea of being in the spotlight again and they don't even speak to one another. Have not for a long time.
I come back to this performance all the time to see what real synergy between a drummer and a guitarist/frontman looks like. Just pure energy pouring out of both of these beautiful human beings.
I really miss this band. I hope Meg is thriving and happy and enjoying life outside the spotlight. As much as I'd love to see some type of reunion tour, I really just want Meg to be happy. We'll always have the memories
The energy and charge Meg puts into playing the drums is unique! His ability to adapt in synergy to jack rhythm changes is unparalleled. Meg is a great drummer 🥁 and I love her ! ❤️
This is probably one of my favorite performances. The energy this gives off with all the songs, and I keep looking at Meg just killing it on the drums and Jack being a great guitarist, singer and songwriter
I agree @Lee. I think its intentional. Its also the beauty of music, and what the music says is the real thing. With influences that he attunes to, Jack is a connoisseur of his style. He is a conduit when he plays. Meg's "barebones" style of drumming just further kicks in the attitude. Knocking down your front door type, that's the White Stripes.
Everyone here loves The Stripes and it feels cool to connect with and see people that appreciate and miss them like I do. I still go back and thru all the records from time to time. That line “You think not telling is the same as not lying don’t you?” always got me but when it’s played along with that guitar riff and those thunderous drum beats it’s honestly one of the most pleasing things I’ve ever heard. Thank You Meg. Thank You Jack. You two are appreciated. You two, together, are greatly missed.
This duo is the very definition of less is more. They had a visceral power and chemistry that most "full" bands only wish they had. I hope they reunite someday and slay us all again. 🤘
I've been a working musician for 30 years, drummer first, then other stuff. She's good, real good imo. She's got rhythm (no click needed), she follows the song without fail, she's got a VERY SOLID consistent touch/strike, and she's fun to watch. If you're a guitarist/singer, she's the perfect drummer. Jack knew what he had.
I've enjoyed some of the songs from Jack's solo albums, but he hasn't sounded quite right without Meg whenever I hear his newer live stuff. The closest is with Daru on Saturday Night Live--that's the closest any drummer has been to getting to this energy.
She is like a sonic bore straight from one’s ears into the auditory cortex. It so perfectly compliments Jack’s jagged, abrasive riffs. Zero frills, pure intensity. I would kill for a drummer like that. So unfortunate they don’t play together anymore.
best comment during live premiere was "Is this live?" lol, its such good quality and these songs are not overplayed to the point seems like a legit debut of new music for some xD
Really? You think she looks at him like he's inferior or unworthy? I thought it was the opposite. I think she had genius creative ability that is paramount to their unique sound but inside felt like she was holding him back because she couldn't do highly technical things that other rock drummers can do.
@@stephenwhite5444 I guess distain wasn't the right word. If she was any better at drums I probably would not like their sound. She didn't need to be highly technical in my opinion.
Good. I hope it wasn't during pandemic time when we were all hiding out in our homes in listening to Jack White wondering when we were going to get back out into the world and or get a vaccine or kick ass and take number. So that is good news
Something about the little interaction at 13:44 is just so perfect. I love the way that meg is sympathetic with whoever broke the bell and the way the talk like siblings or an old married couple.
Meg is quite the Goddess. . . . both in beauty and her playing. This performance in particular, she was really into it. The intense stares, singing along and what even seemed to be some tears. I love musicians who express so much when they play. Love her!
I saw them at red rocks in 2005. I wasn’t sure that a 2 person group could really do a show at such a venue but they blew the doors off the place. What an amazing show
Meg plays from the heart. There are a million drummers out there with more technical facilities on the drum kit but Meg plays with every emotional fiber of her being and that is how it's supposed to be done.

She has a unique style that’s catchy and compelling, those cliches about emotion make no sense if you aren’t playing from the heart you are a bad musician period end of story
"100% original" 😂 Over 20 of their songs are straight-up covers, and their riffs are even less original. Still a great band, but "original" is not the most apt word for them
I love bands where the other members are seen singing along while playing even though they dont sing, its great. It shows what love they have for their friends and the songs they make
The drumming is insanely iconic. Terrifyingly raw, fearless, bashing the energy of the song into your face. She is spelling it out for us and is devastatingly correct with every part she plays. She come into the song like a phoenix from the ashes. Her and Jack. Two dragons swirling through the air, independent but together. Truly get to hear two sounds interact
I am gonna go ahead and say I love Meg's drumming. It's not flashy, but her tone is amazing and she's extremely musical. She plays what the songs need and elevates them. I think she's fantastic.
Micheal.....I agree with everything but 'she's extremely musical' I can tell he helps her no one is so apparently not musical than her. With all due respect her form is so terrible I have only seen it done by guys who could learn timing through practice bit did not have a rhythm bone in their body. And she is a flamboyant example of that.
As someone who was too young when they came out and found them later on I truly don't see why Meg would get any hate,. It's so utterly clear that she is such a HUGE HUGE part of the energy of the band and is incredibly good at keeping time and a solid solid drummer who isn't about showing off their ego.

In the world today everybody gets criticized if you aren't the 'greatest' something. Every drummer gets compared to about five drummers, every guitarist gets compared to about five guitarists, every singer has to be as good as five performers. Its crazy, I thought social media would go the opposite direction, but maybe the tiktok generation will change that. Ours is too used to record companies choosing a few bands, engineering and producing them to daeth, and thats what all music is compared to. Nobody can just listen and go "thats nice" and be happy with good music, it has to be the greatest thing ever. Certainly thats the impression you get off youtube. Although frankly I wasn't listening hard:)
Is her technique good? Not that much Does it work for what she does? Absolutely I love how people forget that The White Stripes origin was Garage Rock, a genre that has not real interest about technicalities. Sure Jack White was a prodigy whose technique makes you think "You're overqualified for this job", but he was also a nobody before TWS; he could arguably have stayed as one of the bunch, if it wasn't for Meg. They've inspired each other and they had chemistry, more that we could ask off many other bands.

Every time I watch this it's brand new. This time it's all about Meg. I can't think of another artist who embraces the whole song and contributes so much.
Meg owns those drums. The rhythm teases between metronomic and out of time, the pulse feels like it's going to run out of control but never does. It underlays the chaos of Jack's guitar. Beautiful and perfect for the song
Pretty stoked to see the whole performance. I have watched performances from this gig, but never the entire performance. God bless you, Jack and Meg. This is my era too because I was fortunate enough to see them perform at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis this same year: 2005.

Meg's performance is really something. The two of them here are fully top game and unique. So good together. Meg's cool easy composure and dynamic ferocity is what makes her drumming sound for me. Jack is apex sounding here too. Wow.

So they had been divorced for 5 years when this was made, it's remarkable the chemistry that still existed between the two of them. I think her drumming is like early Dylan's harmonica playing...lacking technique but full of feeling and passion, so unique & personal...and it works perfectly.
the hate on Meg was so awful, her drumming and character were always EXACTLY what these songs needed. There were two people in this band and the songs needed both of them.
People hated Meg? I mean, I remember nerdy, male drummers going 'sHE's NOt a ReAL dRumMer!' but by and large I don't remember anyone else getting on her case.
That "Forever for her " tune what a song ,and you can tell it means a lot to the both of them .Jack creates so many kick-ass songs he is ,frontman, lead and rhythm guitar and any other instrument he needs ,I'm sure he could get any drummer he wants ,but he chose the one he needs. @@richsackett3423 My view is that Jack and Meg play well together and for a two-piece that is everything. Meg allowed Jack to steal the spotlight and dominate the show, but you can tell with the way they communicate with each other and the looks they give to one another that they are in this together. Jack White is amazing, but his best work artistically and especially musically is with the "White Stripes." It's about the songs, you can be a great artist and still have average songs. The White Stripes have amazingly good songs. Coincidences are for the weak minded, and Jack White did his best work with Meg on drums. There is a reason for that since Jack has played with a lot of good musicians since then and by his standards I think those songs and performances were average but still better than most.
@@morganhale3434 It always comes down to the songs, all of which Jack wrote entirely. Just because she was his muse behind a drum kit doesn’t mean her drumming isn’t rubbish. Speaking as a drummer, watching and listening to Meg it is clear she has excellent technique. Her stick control, dynamics and time keeping are all very good, and her musicality is very evident. There’s nowhere to hide in an outstandingly successful two piece. The naysayers have mistaken simplicity for easy; they are very different things. She is a pro drummer with a unique voice, and she’s got y’all fooled 🙂
It's easy to fool the ignorant that don't understand that genius is in the creative process not in technique like everyone thinks. That's why basic playing like this is esteemed and loved and a Van Halen cover band is nothing special even though they have excellent technical ability. Everyone chases technical levels thinking that's where the genius is.

You gotta love people that are that generous with themselves.
This story is exactly why I love the white stripes and miss them so much
So cool.
Under Great White Northern Lights was an EXCELLENT doc about that tour that I now need to re-watch.
just love the chemistry and energy when they performed.
Her hungry eyes tho..
They were a prefect musical combination.
@@shadcovert1160 that would wicked. Maybe it’s possible what with their greatest hits album coming out.

Meg's timing and feel in this performance are excellent. Forget how drums are "supposed" to be played and there's no denying she elevates the songs.

I don't care what people say, that guy playing guitar's style perfectly compliments Meg White's drums.
Jack White^

You know who had a good guitarist to compliment their playing?... This British cat named I think Ringo Starr or something like that.
Love megs drumming

just too great
Everyone here loves The Stripes and it feels cool to connect with and see people that appreciate and miss them like I do.

Jack realised what he was losing, which is why the lyrics got darker.

Meg is, and always will be, one half of the White Stripes.
Yup, she is awesome!
Is her technique good? Not that much
Does it work for what she does? Absolutely
I love how people forget that The White Stripes origin was Garage Rock, a genre that has not real interest about technicalities. Sure Jack White was a prodigy whose technique makes you think "You're overqualified for this job", but he was also a nobody before TWS; he could arguably have stayed as one of the bunch, if it wasn't for Meg. Meg beat the hell out of that kit. She easily makes my top 10 favorite drummers list. We miss you, Meg! Hope life is happy for her.
I fruitlessly search for updated info on her. I hope she's feeling peace.
Selfishly tho, I wish she'd have a project to share soon.
Been watching Jack White videos for a sold hour and a half now. His music just mesmerizes me to no end. I’m not a huge music lover but when it comes to Jack, I’m totally lost in his lyrics and musical genius forever and ever!!!
Jack sounds and performs like one of those important genius musicians that sadly passed away too son, except that he is still is among us. And I am grateful for that!
He is a unique songwriter and musician! He is such a badass guitar player...his guitar and vocal style stands out so much, you always know if it is him singing and playing guitar! I love the stuff he did with The Raconteurs, especially the first album! I haven't found any special songwriters and musicians in a long time, but I also haven't been trying that hard to find them. I am sure there are all kinds of cool new bands and artists out there, I am just getting old and out of touch! Maybe I should start my own band and call it, Old & Out of Touch. I miss playing music and being in bands.
@@lancetaylor-music I understand, it's hard to keep up with finding great musicians and songwriters.
Have you heard of Ty Segall? He is pretty good in my opinion. Very talented musicians, puts out a lot of records and plays/sings with lots of emotion while keeping his music powerful and groovy. I'd recommend checking it out!
@@xx_PCCR_xx thanks for the recommendation! I will check Ty Segall out! The name sounds familiar, and I don't think it's just because his name reminds me of a seventies band or artists name. One of the last songwriters I found that I really liked is John Fulbright. Here are a few of his song's. th-cam.com/video/rkV_Nr5R-xw/w-d-xo.html

@@xx_PCCR_xx John Fulbright is really mellow compared to TY Segall, but I think he is a top notch singer-songwriter. I just listened to 2 of TY Segall's song's. I like it...sounds kinda like Dinosaur Jr. and Queens of the Stone Age had a baby, with a bunch of other stuff mixed in! Very cool. Thank you, now I have something new to explore!
@@xx_PCCR_xx wow, I really like this live recording I just found of TY Segall and The Muggers...super cool.Thank you!

I discovered the WS too late to see them live. Jack is a great poet and guitar player, but I watched this video mainly to watch Meg play the drums. I was not disappointed. Thank you for this.
I am 48 years old I knew about them when they first came out but never started listening to them until about 2 months ago and now that's all I listen to
I’ve tried to label what Meg and Jack had that was magical. Love, respect and other words don’t do it justice. I’ve settled on reverence. They revere each other. More than love, cherishing, or respect which are all embodied. But much more.
I have rewatched the Red Rain performance like 15 times, so good. I love the beat switch at 19:30 sounds Meg is beating the hell out of the drums. 🔥
And at 19:39 on, look at her fierce look of concentration!
Red Rain has to be objectively the best White Stripes tune, no? Hand Springs close second.....
The camera angle with both Jack and Meg in the shot for Forever For Me is amazing. Like its straight out of a 70's movie
The chemistry between Jack and Meg is unbelievable. I think Jack needs Meg more than the other way around.
"She is the star of this band." - Jack himself. "band"!! I miss them.
@@PMurray2694 No chemistry and the songs are pedestrian. He is great but he doesn't click with the others. Good try but no cigar.
Yeah because without Jack, she never would have played the drums and hasn’t played since. Jack flexed “I’m such a great musician, it can be just me a garbage drummer and I’ll still sell millions of records.” More or less.
Members of good bands are constantly visually communicating with one another. That would only be remarkable to the weak-minded.
Took the words out of my head.
It has been years of this, and yet it still hits with force, feeling, soul, freshness...... What a trip!!! This is what music is all about!!!
Thank You! 👊🏾
I'm fascinated by the dynamics between Jack and Meg. I find them both amazing in their own ways.
This really makes you realize what made the white stripes incredible. you can tell meg isn't your typical studio drummer.. she has a pretty sexy way of drumming. but just the chemistry between them and their choatic balance. the power of passion! one of the greatest duos ever
That sound when he switches on the pedal that’s just great. Both of them are really versatile musicians. Keep on rocking guys ❤
You just can't fake the chemistry and energy they have when they play 🔥
The best band of my youth. I remember seeing them do Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground on SNL. It’s one of those rare performances that gave me goosebumps. Everything was perfect. They were passionate, looked cool, and made great music.
