John McCain was one of the last things I expected to see when I clicked on this video
Really? He used to play bass in Cannibal Corpse too, that’s how amazing he was.
@@bustedfender wait? John McCain was in Cannibal Corpse?! Goddamnit that's great and unexpected news.
And he’s the FIRST thing you see 😂
If I remember correctly he was a pretty good host. Non actor's are always graded on a curve but I remember a skit where he was a stoner teacher that was good.
Wearing dad jeans, of course.
You know it's real rock n roll when it sounds like the best thing you ever heard but it all could fall apart at any moment. Not many musicians can walk that line but this is proof it can be done.
Very well articulated.
Why is this comment so funny 😭
For sure. If you don’t know them, check out the band ‘68 they walk that line in a similar way.
This will forever be one of the performances meg outdid jack on.
@@alluvermin I know, and think about that
SNL posting back to back Jack White vintage performances for seemingly no reason had me doing a real quick Google search to confirm he wasn't dead. He is not by the way.
No reason? It's because The White Stripes are celebrating their greatest hits release and the band's anniversary.
Hahaha just what I was thinking
It’s probably because they just released a greatest hits record
Also, didn't Jack just recently fill in for another musician at the last minute because of covid? Maybe showing some appreciation.
I'm now expecting more vintage musical performances. A LOT more.
This is absolutely the most perfect version of this song you will ever find live.
No doubt
For sure. Although I do love the version in the medley they played at the MTV awards. They only played the beginning and first verse, but it sounds epic, and his vocals were even better.
My first time watching it. I always look for a live version. Thanks for your confirmation. And I loved it.
th-cam.com/video/uep_vBObNwY/w-d-xo.html
I'm all for the OG white stripes but the live in Olympia Paris version is bad ass. That's my favorite for sure
Jack White been saving rock & roll since it was still in 4:3 aspect ratio
its stops be at 4-3 in 2005
Yup
When this came out in 2001 it already was a rare case of a great rock'n'roll album in a long time, and has remained such a rarity for a long time since. It's been 23 years since then and things haven't changed much.
Ur in the bubble I was in . That is very much not the case. I overpraise him too. He ain't bad by no means but not what you claim. Take a deeper dive and you'll see.
Meg White to this day gets the best sound out of Jack, love her.
100%
I agree
They should try getting a bass player.
Lyrics are garbage.
@@jackhammer7824 Awful take.
Watch him perform...he definitely brings out the best in anyone he plays with. His energy is 👍. She plays the drums though I guess.
Jack White isn’t so much playing music as being possessed by it and carried away- it courses around and through him. What a joy to watch this!
The instrument is Jack White soul opening up and letting the music flowing throwing through it, they come together and OpenIng is made when they start to play, so naturally, it’s pouring out of his heart and you see his soul create a gift Shirley from the creator. ❤🎉❤🧡💚💜💙💖❣️💕❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🔥☄️🌈🌪️🔥💥💫🪐🌏🌍🌙🌔🌓🌒🌑🌊💧❄️🫧💥🌤️🔥⛅️✨🌟☄️💫⚡️🔥💨🌹🌼🌸🌺🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄👁️👅🫀🫁🤪🧐😛🥰😏😇❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥💥💥💥💥💥🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌟🌟🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹😇😍🥰😘☄️😍🧐🤩🤩😎😜👌👌👌👌👌 okay 👌 you know that I’m.always going to let it happen for the Creator let’s his creation (us) to bring a sound sound, and frequency to bring joy to him and through him for him and by him who is Christ.
Meg proved introverts could perform on the stage. She was terrified but still was able to sound great. I would love to see her conquer her fears and make a comeback with Jack.
Meg doesn't have "stage fright". She played hundreds and hundreds of gigs and to tens of thousands at festivals. She had acute anxiety during the 2007 tour. 10 years of nearly constant gigging. Something changed during 2007 and she chose to step aside. God Bless Meg White.
I highly doubt there's anything about that girl that's terrified. She gets into it while playing. I mean feeling it somewhere deep. Nothing she about that girl
The energy from that guitar is insane
Ever been drinking , perfect buzz , then you do that one shot and things get fuzzy ? That’s Jacks guitar tone ..
It's such an iconic sound.
That very first chord he plays, after the feedback intro, sounds like The White Stripes and no one else.
That's how distinctive his playing was.....a single chord, or even single note, and you immediately knew who it was.
Perfect description lol
@@avedic one of the best guitarists in his generation for sure!
this despriction is perfect lmao
Buy a Russian Big Muff. It becomes pretty evident then.
0:48 that face you make when you know you’ve got a banger and you’re about to melt the entire audience’s face off.
I think all guitarists understand just how fuckin' hard it is to play totally perfect 100% of the time as Jack is here. Like, Jack is the sole source of melodic content here in this song. He has to be totally on all of the time just to even make the song work. Dude plays bass parts on guitar while he also plays lead guitar at like the same time lol. He just had to be perfect at his job, and he definitely delivered.
Not only that.. But jumping around and how aggressively he moves to still hit each note and be on the neck where you intend to be during all that lol
@Gage Additionally, and with all due respect to Meg, she is serving as an extension of Jack. She is his creation (in this capacity). Any deficit is compensated for with Jack's improvisation. Very exciting to watch.
Not that hard to be honest
no not at all
@@bloodromance4776 cool man, what’s your band called?
I recall watching this when it aired, I've been hooked since. His vocal style is so bizarre that it fits the chaotic noise perfectly.
Same here. Absentmindedly had SNL on and was like what the hell is this? Pure music? Real rock with just a guitar drums and vocals? A guy really rocking out? Wow. Downloaded a few songs off limewire like “I can learn” and “dead leaves”. Listened to those on repeat for like a week and subsequently bought everything they released and went to several live shows.
Like that, do ya?
@@derrikferguson3219SAME! I remember seeing this when it aired. couldn't believe it. hooked since.
When was this aired?
If next year White Stripes reunite and make a live tour I'll forgive 2020
They won't.
Meg is never coming back. It’s not even about her and Jack’s relationship anymore.
I could see her doing a one time show, or play a few songs with him on a tour if musicians ever get to make a living touring again.

2:24 as well. Love it.
Jesus now that you said it I can’t unsee it. It almost seems intentional. He even did the finger move
1:12 every guitarist knows that when your tone is that nasty, those movements are completely involuntary. Jack was actually showing a lot of restraint with his flailing.

The movement adds so much imagine having that tone and staying still anyways is that a supro guitar ?

I love the face he pulls when the fuzz kicks in at 2:15 , he knows exactly how good it sounds
For those that are curious, this is from the October 19th, 2002 episode of SNL hosted by the late John McCain. (Seems like this basic information should be included in the description.) Also, this episode is the only time the White Stripes performed on SNL as a duo.
I just watched this 9 times in a row.
I’m on my second consecutive watch... I feel at least a third is in the cards.
Hats off to your 9

The world doesn’t thank Detroit nearly enough for the 100s of musical geniuses who grew up in it’s boundaries. There must be true magic in our midst!
Absolutely. Detroit is full of brilliant raw musicians.
I love Detroit bros I love smoking them rocks
As a Native I support your statement! Thanks!
@@joelglanton6531 As someone who smoked his fair share of rocks there, I can wholeheartedly say I love Detroit too!
His music is like old rock roll, modern music sounds terrible, he can rock
Why does that “simple/beating the shit out of the drums” thing work so perfectly?
i'm perpetually worried that jack is going to lose his balance and fall down
Bill Burr (after his most recent SNL where Jack White preformed) said he looks possessed when playing the guitar. In a good way. I feel that. There are some song that while I’m driving you be hard pressed to catch me not banging on my steering wheel and nodding along to some piece of music. It just takes over when you’re really felling it.
You ever seen him in concert you know you he can sustain this craziness a good long time.
he's got the whole pete townshend thing goin n doing a very good job...white stripes rock.
Right? He's a tall dude too.
Lol
One of my favorite White Stripes songs absolutely nailed by Jack and Meg. They synergy between them is unreal.
slower on that one and its quite good
I just clicked randomly, freaking awesome !! Don't have their stuff in my catalogue but seem a like a must see live.
I've seen every Jack White band/project live at least twice, and he is never, ever better than when he's playing with Meg.
A true rock 'n' roll moment on television. It was 2002 and I just had my mind blown by The Strokes (also on SNL). I kept hearing The White Stripes mentioned alongside them but had not heard them yet. While in line at In-N-Out in Downey, CA, KROQ 106.7 played this track and my mouth was in my lap! I went to Middle Earth Records to find a CD and was puzzled that there were only two people on the cover. Where was the rest of the band? Now knowing they were only a duo, my buddy and I anxiously awaited the SNL performance. I thought Jack was just going to stand there while she drummed in the background. I was NOT PREPARED for what I saw! And neither was my best friend! As soon as this performance ended, my phone rang. I picked up and my best bud screamed "WAS THAT NOT AWESOME OR WHAT?!"
Great story!
Dope story. I love reading these when I can. I'm younger and didn't get to see them live :(
Middle Earth Records! I used to pass by that shop on my way to school every day. There used to be so many independent record shops like that, and now they are all gone.
Those were my stomping grounds back in the 80s! I worked at Licorice Pizza but Middle Earth was quite the treasure trove
You're talking a lot....but you're nor saying anything.
Damn....love that guitar riff.
Early present, third man is releasing a ton of white strips goodies right now for the bands anniversary!!! thanks snl:)
Bro im so happy, my album came in a week ago and im just so happy about it, not to mention the black keys are doing a bunch for the 10th anniversary for brothers
That “Fell In Love With A Girl” block kit and “We Are Going To Be Friends” book are great ideas!
@@WheezyIsHere brave man for mentioning that band when talking about the white stripes.
@@thevirtualjonathan1284 they squashed their beef. And i love them both
@@WheezyIsHere I never got into the keys, they seemed too derivative and contrived. And yes I already know that the flat duo jets were doing it before and arguably better before the white stripes.
Meg is awesome
Not as a drummer
This is about as raw as a performance can get, and damn it sounds fantastic. The tone of that guitar is incredible
It's going to be a Jack and Meg White Christmas
Pure Heaven.
Oh yes....
God he's brilliant
His music is definitely something you either like or do not. He’s successful, so he must be doing something right. But I can see how some find it weird and silly.
This was how I learned about the White Stripes. Went out the next day and bought the CDs.
Hey! Me too! I remember watching the performance with my jaw on the floor. Had the cd within a couple of days.
Same here. Was watching SNL like “wtf?”
Around 2008, my son, who was a teenager at the time, introduced me to the White Stripes. I have been a fan ever since. I love their energy and groove. This is one of my favorite performances.
After watching this live version, I never wanna hear the studio one again.
The Fuzz pedal is absolutely *exquisite* in this recording, I cannot stop watching this.

3 pedals, and only 2 on this track. His tone will always be unrivaled
I agree. A few pedals strewn about stage and not a actual pedal board in sight
They killed it in this performace. the essence of rock and roll right here!
I love that second verse so much.
"If you can hear a piano fall you can hear me coming down the hall, if I could just hear your pretty voice I don't think I need to see at all, don't think I need to see at all. This live version is LIT!!
I love how Jack never sings a song the same way twice lol. I feel like he himself doesn't even know what's gonna happen when he steps on the stage.
Greatest SNL musical guest appearance of the 00s. This followed by "We Are Going To Be Friends", perfection
Freakin' love Jack White, absolute creative genius

I was fully engrossed into the underground hip hop scene back when the White Stripes were emerging in the late 90s/early 2000s, so I missed out on this regrettably. The White Stripes are one of the few groups that move me.
Say what you want about Meg but her pocket was REAL. Respect
the only thing I want to say about her is I love her and I want her to call me!

This country's taste in popular music and Republican presidential candidates used to be a lot better...
Amen to that.
I thought that I was the only one noticing that. He even flubbed last bar of music. I know I've heard some White Stripes songs on the radio, at some time, and those had to be heavily processed and fixed. This is abominable. Plenty of better acts, and they don't have to try this hard. And...Meg White, can't even really call that drumming. F-in joke act.
@@joelstolarski2244 what the hell are you talking about?
@@muffintop420 It was a jarring performance. If you know anything about mixing, obviously their recordings are fixed in the studio. Admittedly Jack is in good shape. Meg White looked stoned. If you think their live performance was Tight then obviously, you can't hear melodic nuances.
@@joelstolarski2244 I'm afraid you misunderstood, I was quite happy with the Stripes here. And who were the better Republicans you thought I was referring to re. presidential candidates? McCain was an incredibly decent and accomplished man compared to essentially any of the last twenty five years of candidates. Regarding the "melodic nuances", I grant you they're not Mitsuko Uchida, or some other world renowned instrumentalist, but it was still a great, talented, and heartfelt performance. How can that much excellence come pouring out of one guitar? Jack White ROCKS!
White Stripes at absolute peak power. White Blood Cells was amazing. The two albums before that were no less incredible.
