@@jerrywoods4066 I disagree with you there, but to each their own. I'll happily agree that Deep Purple's second lineup was absolute fire, but in my opinion neither David Coverdale or Joe Lynn Turner could hold a candle to Gillan (or Dio). Only in my opinion of course :)

The guitar solo in Gates of Babylon is just epic. The second section of it, the breakdown, completely blew my mind when I first heard it in the '70s (I am nearly 65). I play guitar. Guitar playing is not all just about technique and the ability to play fast, musicality matters so much, and this solo is so... _musical._ It conjures the atmosphere, takes you on a journey and yes I agree, puts you in a trance... And Ronnie James Dio is simply one of the best rock vocalists ever. Yes, Rainbow was very popular, even mainstream back then. Dio went on to sing with Black Sabbath. This type of great rock music is rare nowadays, and when it does come, it is a little niche - popular but not mainstream.

You're right the vast majority of requested songs for reaction channels are older, for me music has stagnated over the last 20yrs or so when you consider how radically it changed between generations in the past, I like a huge variety of music from Beethoven to Black Sabbath, pop, country, classical, metal, dance, but very little from the 90's onwards, I blame commercialism to some degree. A little bit of dark fantasy in this one. Babylon has since ancient times always been associated with all of the decadent and sinful nature of humanity.
I think the magic of the music of the past is that it isn't necessarely made to be liked by anyone. How many songs Rainbow have placed in the charts during the Dio years ? There was a slightly risk that an album would fail. Nowadays they are not willing to take that risk and that's the reason why the music has not enough soul. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath were never constantly big in the charts, but they sold millions of albums !
