    Hello; I started the trail (easy) at 61 and immediately tested this wide model, they are comfortable, I had a hallus valgus operation a few years ago and I don't suffer from it. I manage to progress and I am delighted.

      I've just completed my first run in these... I've got very wide forefeet with a very narrow heel and ankle....I don't think they run wide at the back... at all...
      They fit me great ! No issue in locking down the foot what so ever : Great shoe..love 'm

      Patrick Nieuwenhuizen did you buy true to size or half size up on the wide version? I’m used to going 1/2 size up for the extra toe box width & accommodating foot swelling, but I’m not sure with these. The talk in the video of a “wider heel & midfoot” has me hesitant.

      @@speedwolf5212 Hey,
      Didn't size up...I have these in 43 1/3... for comparison: I wear Nike in 44 and Adidas in 43 1/3...
      Recently Altra Torin 3,5 in a size 43,5 (running on the small side ) and Altra Olympus 3,5 in a 44,5...Nice and roomy toebox. All EU sizing obviously....

    I would suggest pulling the insoles out and comparing them .. in fact do this for all reviews where you compare previous models or between brands - there is a lot to be learned from the quality and shape of the insole. Great review - maybe throw in the EVO as well

    • @TheUltraRunningCompany
      @TheUltraRunningCompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comments and suggestion, gosekinz! When we see a significant difference between insoles or think there is something worth commenting on, we always make an effort to do so. Certainly shoe designers make insole choices for comfort, performance, price and even marketing reasons, and if we feel like it is an odd choice or contributes positively or negatively to our overall impression of the shoe, we'll be sure to call it out. In cases where there is not a significant change or it is similar to other comparable products, we may leave it out. In the case of the Speedgoat, we didn't feel it was a differentiator...as far as we can tell it's the same quality Ortholite insole across the line (SG3, SG4, SG4 Wide, EVO) and while we've never had an issue with it, it's never really jumped out at us. We DO measure characteristics like drop, stack height, etc with the insole OUT, so I guess in a sense we do take variation into account as well. We hope that helps - thanks again for the great suggestion, and we'll keep it in mind for future reviews!

    Maybe you can measure the width of the outsole of the 2 versions? I believe the midsole and outsole is exactly the same, just that the upper is looser and has more volume. Wouldn't make sense for them to make new molds and production lines just to add 2mm for the wide version...

    • @TheUltraRunningCompany
      @TheUltraRunningCompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, who dis! It may be hard to believe, but when HOKA says they're making a wide shoe, they're being serious about it. In the case of the Speedgoat 4, we measure the outsole as ~3mm wider at the widest point (M10 = 120mm vs. 123mm). While we don't have the ability to measure inside the shoe where our foot would actually sit (not even sure what tool we'd use short of cutting off the upper), we see no reason to imagine it would be any different. Great question, and thanks for keeping us honest!

    Nathan, hi
    I am a big fan of these reviews. Found it really interesting that you measured the heel to toe drop on the SG4s as 6 mm. Because I have had constant front foot pain since switching to them. I love the ground feel, the comfort etc but I do not get this foot pain in the SG3s. Is there even a possibility that the orange colour wave is a higher heel to toe drop than the other colours (e.g. if each colour wave is made at a different factory)? Because I also have the men's orange that you show in the review. Would you be willing to measure the heel to toe drop in a different colour? Just curious....

    Great review & love the comparison vs speedgoat 3. Not a bad trail shoe, but one of the last id choose for technical mountain trails. The grip isnt that great either, lugs seem somewhat ineffective compared to say La Sportiva Bushido or salomon S-lab ultra or speed cross.

    • @TheUltraRunningCompany
      @TheUltraRunningCompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Right on, Harm! We are also interested in the impact of different design aspects (like carbon plates), but at this point the Adios, with it's 10mm heel-to-toe offset, is not likely a product we'll be spending much time in. We're not sure why companies add so much additional heel cushion, especially into shoes designed to "go fast". While there are certainly folks who can run efficiently in them, most of the folks here at URC aren't clocking 2:20 or better marathons and at slower paces the heel really gets in the way of our landing under our body as we'd like to. Here's an overview of our philosophy, if you have a minute (or 10...) to check it out: bit.ly/URCReviews. Thanks again for tuning in and commenting - we appreciate it!

    Great review, how is the fit of *SG4 Wide* compared to *Challenger ATR 5 normal width*? The Challenger 5s are roomy and comfortable, but they're road-to-trail shoes, and traction isn't the greatest, would love to upgrade to Vibram Megagrip.

    • @TheUltraRunningCompany
      @TheUltraRunningCompany  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Reza! Great question - we'll take a swing at it: The Challenger is *slightly* more accommodating in the toe box by design vs the Speedgoat, meaning that the front 1/4 or so of the shoe fits slightly wider in our experience. The "wide" version of the SG makes it slightly wider through the heel, instep and towards the metatarsals (just below where the toes connect to the rest of the foot). SO...if your fit concern is in the toes, we're not 100% sure the SG Wide will be a better solution. If its throughout the foot, then the SG Wide *would* be a better solution. For us, the hierarchy would go like this (dialed-in ---> accommodating): Speedgoat, Challenger ATR, Speedgoat Wide, Challenger Wide. We hope that helps! Also: we do love us some MegaGrip. :)

    is there a Speedgoat 4 Evo? I'm in NZ so can't get them "in store" at all?

    • @TheUltraRunningCompany
      @TheUltraRunningCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The EVO is based on the Speedgoat form used for both the 3 & 4, so it is identical for both shoes. The changes made between the 3 & 4 were primarily in the upper, and the EVO does not share an upper with either shoe...so it was unaffected when they updated the versions. :)

  • @Fozzee.1970
    @Fozzee.1970 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where does the Evo Speedgoat fit in with the Speedgoat 4 and Speedgoat 4 wide as far as width is concerned. Tried the Torrent 2 they fit my wide feet well. Want to try the Speedgoat but not sure what size to get. Heard the Evo speedgoat has a nice fit.

    • @TheUltraRunningCompany
      @TheUltraRunningCompany  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John. Our guess is the EVO would fit you well - we think its the "Goldilocks" of the model. It is NOT a wide, but the toe box is more accommodating - as far as we can tell because they've loosened the taper just a touch when applying the MATRIX upper and the lower tongue (spandex-type) material. If the Torrent 2 fits you well, that's a good sign...that shoe has a more rounded toe box than many trail shoes and is a pretty solid indicator of how the EVO would fit. The WIDE is wide throughout, which makes it a little sloppy in really technical terrain if you DON'T have a wide foot. For us, the taper on the standard Speedgoat is just slightly *too* aggressive, leading to almost immediate (OK, for us that means in the FIRST 50k...) blisters unless you have a really pointy foot. We hope that helps!

    I've been using the speedgoat 4 less than a month and try it twice time, but unfortunately my fore foot rubber on the upper was pelling off, I don't know if it just some issues that I get from my pair of shoes, but I think the upper part of this shoe especially on the fore foot need to be stiching and not just sticking on it with glue, or just remove the rubber part on the forefoot because it has no function at all and just make annoying if it don't strong enough sticking.

      I would go ATR 5 depending on your needs. The reason is because of the durability. I hear about major issues with durability on the new Speedgoats (look it up). I like the Stinson ATR, but it is a bit heavy. I don't mind some weight, it supplies great cushion and I am not a podium finishing speed guy (I am a slow ultramarathon guy). But after a lot of research, I am going to go for the Altra Olympus 4.0 when it is released. I suggest giving it a look. A bold move for me, as I only really run in Hokas, but their current trail lineup is lacking for me. Hoka road shoes are king right now, though.

      @@migatron1 If you don't mind the fit of the Speedgoat (I find the toebox to be less comfortable than other Hokas), the only issue you will find is that the "weatherproofing" on the Speedgoat 4 toebox tends to become delaminated where the toe box creases as you bend your toes. From what I understand, this is cosmetic in nature, but could be best solved by trimming the torn or excess peeling with a razor blade before the peeling spreads. Google this issue to see what I am talking about. Additionally, a more troubling issue is the "strip" in the center of the toe box where the laces meet becomes detached on some shoes. You may not have these issues, but if you do, you are not alone. The outsole and midsole on the Speedgoat 4 is a solid 9/10, though.
