What a great tune, it reminds me of the timeframe in the early 2000s when I was riding freight trains and hitchhiking up old coast highway through the northwest of america. Just me, my pack and harmonica, along with which ever riding mate I might have decided to run with if anyone at all. It was the best days of my life busking on street corner, working seasonal farm jobs, whatever, but with no bills, or major responsibilities tying me down, it was the happiest I've ever been.
I used to play guitar and bass. Then I started listening to Tom, and now I play everything. Banjo, mandolin, accordion, bash on anything (percussion). If it makes a sound, I play it, as Tom has taught me.
One of the greatest artists planet earth has ever known. One-of-a-kind. Thank you, Tom, so much, for so many years of inspiration, desperation and memories.
Many years ago I met 2 attractive Irish sisters. One night while they were working at the local pub they noticed Tom Waits in the bar. They talked him into playing some songs with the stand up piano in the corner. The owner ran out yelled at him to stop 'cause "That Piano only gets played on Grandma's Birthday".
Saw Tom at the Great Southeast Music Hall, Atlanta in 1975. Unforgettable. a wildncrazy neo-beatnick, who also writes some of the most beautiful melodies ever recorded. Always looking to hear his latest.

Tom Waits is an absolute musical genius madman.
What music could be better than this, Dr. Phineas Welles?
We're all mad here, we might as well be hatters.
This has been one of my favourite songs ever since it came out ... so good to read through the comments and see in how many lives this song has played an important role ... thanks to everybody here
Tom Waits is a genius at getting the most out of very sparing musical accompaniment.
This song haunts my dreams. Every word and inflection is perfection
Couldn't Agree More!!
And I wish I could have put it half as well as you have!!

How can anyone dislike this ? He makes it sound so easy. Brilliant.
We can dislike it because Tom Waits is the worst singer to ever pick up a microphone. Great songs. Horrible voice. Stick to acting and songWRITING.
@@willbrown2198 Talking about shitty takes :O
I think I want Tom Waits songs played at my funeral. This song for sure.
Tom Waits is one of the only men who can look old, withered, and extremely cool and handsome all at the same time.
One of my favorite songs of all-time...and most of my faves are Tom. It's tough to pick favorites when you love Tom Waits--long career full of greats.
I used to play guitar and bass.
Then I started listening to Tom, and now I play everything. Banjo, mandolin, accordion, bash on anything (percussion). If it makes a sound, I play it, as Tom has taught me.
Tom Waits don't know that he is a real part of my life...And I'm old.
Many thanks
Nobody can tell a tale with grit and texture like this ol wolf.
One of the greatest artists planet earth has ever known. One-of-a-kind. Thank you, Tom, so much, for so many years of inspiration, desperation and memories.
It sounds like he's dead
A brilliant story-teller and chronicler of Americana from the ridiculous to the sublime.
Bender was better.
Tom Waits is an artist who uses life as his Muse;and he taught me so very much ;I owe you Tom ,Thanks

Lovely story. Actually says more about the Irish than about Waits.
was the piano drunk?

yes, absolute genius
absolut is a vodka, maybe he's vodka too
Because all the hipster filmmakers grew up on Tom Waits, as did the musicians tapped to play music for the film.
his music is soundtrack for a gritty documentary called life
i think it is...
so that's how it's done. Like there's nothing to it. And when the song is done it's still in your head. Gone gone it just keeps going on.
This music does something, wakes up part of you.
Brilliant! Still have the record on vinyl.
