@thomasurquhart507 Old comment, but I'll counter Mark Lanegan. Should've hopefully already heard of him, if not, you're in for a treat. He's like Tom Waits's doppelganger, they both have very gravelly baritone singing voices and a wide and intense range. Even look basically the same. Very different songwriting, I can tell from the lyrics easily who wrote what. They are much more alike than different though. Mark Lanegan's more dark and drug/rock and roll, and Tom Waits while also very dark is also a lot stranger and a bit more poetic. There are many songs/albums with Lanegan to check out though. He has an extensive solo and features discography, with some fantastic solo albums and a lot of work with people like Isobel Campbell, PJ Harvey, Duff McKagan, Skeleton Joe, Greg Dulli, Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri. He started with Screaming Trees in the 80s/90s singing more old-school psychadelic rock style music. In the early 2000s, his work with Queens of the Stone Age on Songs for the Deaf and Rated R was phenomenal, some of my favorite songs by him in there. You should check out Song for the Dead and In the Fade by QotSA, Nearly Lost You and All I Know by ScreamingTrees, and Idle Hands by Gutter Twins. Outside of bands he played with, his album Bubblegum is my favorite followed by probably Blues Funeral. His folk albums are great too though, Whiskey For The Holy Ghost being my favorite, but they're all dope. I love a lot of his duets with Isobel Campbell too, especially the Townes van Zandt covers. Not one of his albums is bad and a good number of his albums are fantastic front to back. Sorry for the drunken ramble 4 months out. But if you haven't heard of him, you should check him out.
I'm not sure if the haters are aware of this... But Tom Waits has a growing level of popularity throughout the intercontinental United States... AND Japan.... AND Dublin.... *AND* Philadelphia!

Wait's himself is cool as a cucumber, despite the condescending comedy of the interviewer. It's one of the most painful interviews I've ever seen, but you keep watching because it's fascinating to watch Waits never break character. And when he finally starts performing at the piano, as a viewer I wanted Waits to elbow the interviewer off the piano bench. But Waits doesn't skip a beat and gives the performance of a lifetime.
painful is the Michael Jackson interviews
I agree .....same here
The interviewer was Don Lane..Bronx native who had his own talk show in Australia from the late 70's to the early 80's..
This is a great interview and interviewer. What a gem of history
The best interview in history!
Tom Waits... the coolest man in the world
Dude. He's so smacked back in this interview. Love his music.
I have been randomly watching this for 10 years.
I think the interviewer genuinely likes Waits, and both of them seem to be amused by making fun of eachother. Great interview.
This show was on cable in the US late at night. It was like watching Fernwood Tonight for real. It was the first time I saw Tom. I have been an fan ever since.
Wonder which part of Australia the interviewer is from.
Sounds like Brooklyn.
Ye he was a yank
Its Don Lane...his nickname was the ' lanky yank'
Don Lane was an honourary Australian
The Bronx.
Bronx native, ADOPTED Aussie! Much loved!
I remember seeing this on the night and the next day I went out and bought 3 albums. He is a genius. Blue Valentine is an amasing album.
One of my favorite artists of all time.guy was one of a kind.
jesussssssss, sounds creepily like the joker
This guy was Heath Ledger's inspiration for the Joker's voice. So, yeah, it should, and the fact that you noticed shows the insane acting skills Ledger had
segeeslice
You got this from Reddit, so cut it out that you are making this revelation.
bobbyblueblaze true dat
bobbyblueblaze yup u called it. having said that, I saw this video ages ago on some other site but came back to watch it after seeing the link on reddit.
bobbyblueblaze i got it from facebook
I had only planned to watch a few seconds of this to hear this voice, but Tom and the Host are hilarious through this whole thing! LOL
Absolute magic this man is. Best interview of anyone ever.
Imagine this
You have arrived by plane straight from a late night singing show, there are drinks in the plane so you take a few to help you sleep, then you wake up, and you take a ride to an interview... You definitely would not be able to even speak. So the fact that he is responding to questions is fucking amazing
8:20 I was expecting Tom to finally snap and say "you brought me here just to make fun of me.. "
wrong joker dude
Not wrong joker, there is no wrong joker, this does actually remind me of the interview with maury in Joker, I wonder if influences were taken from this for Joker
I love this. Thank you for uploading, Jens.
Every other comment on here is something about The Joker.
Lithus17 Moron, I was being ironic.
lol I think Tom may have tried some heroin... What do you think, Glenn?
GrassValleyGreg I think he's done more than that. Wouldn't you?
Glenn Howerton
Indeed.
+Glenn Howerton I dont know. I think he kinda sounds like Warren zevon
One of the best lyricists ever!!
Best tv-show host ever and interviewer.
It's simple, we kill, the Batman
if it's so simple, why haven't you done it already?
If you’re good at something never do it for free
Tom Waits' interviews are legendary. He doesn't seem to take journalists seriously and who can blame him for that. This one's from 1979.
Seriously? How could you take anyone seriously when you're this bent out of your mind on drugs?
.... when youtube was new... my partner and i were so ecstatic to get to see, this exact post of tom waits deep dive, in our late teens.... rip, kiddo
Can you imagine if this guys says do i look like a guy with a plan"
"What do you do for 72 hours on a plane?"
Apparently heroin. Holy shiiiit this dude is soo close to a nod yet still coherent it's crazy, he got his dosage ON POINT.
This legend was an inspiration to Heath, did the voice along with his amazing acting skills, and became a legend as well
I find them both charming! I think the host was a lot more respectful than many would be in 2019. Let's not pretend that an interview like this wouldn't be off-putting for host.
Learnt from Tory baker on kinda funny that Heath ledger based his joker impression on Tom waits
Same here i had to check it out after he said it
Rafael Robledo SAME HERE MAN
This host is as professional as can be, trying to mirror the body language and be hospitable, but Tom Waits is, um, insane, so he's having a hell of a time of it. And the audience seems to enjoy that. And I enjoy that.
