    Very good and thorough tutorial. Glad I found this tutorial - for one thing, Sony's User Guide sure is worthless. Had this little dynamite camera for several years but just now finally finding out the "wheres & whats" of many of these control features. Thanks much my friend for posting this and being so straight forward and thorough.

    I gotta thank you for doing this breakdown showing what can be used,there is so much to learn,and I’m just starting out, after having a stroke,what I liked here was you so precise on what you want to say, I can understand everything you said ,and that’s hard since stroke. 🙏🙏

    I like the fact that you had the display screen right in front of us (viewer) which made it intuitive to understand. Some of the other videos go back and forth between the contributor and sometimes just a parital view of display or "you should know"....well we don't. Thanks!

    Curious how the Sony cameras work in comparison to the Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and others?? Then check out this breakdown of how the Sony RX100 III works, because all the Sony cameras work very much the same. Some offer different features, but the core concepts like focus modes, focus area, metering modes, etc.. all apply.

    Wow Jay!! Awesome tutorial! I have the RX100V in which I'm using manual focus for video by using the focus ring. It's really touchy along with needing to rotate quite a bit to find good focus. Do you have any tips for a quicker way to achieve focus throughout the entire frame such as wide? Will one of the Spot focus modes achieve most of the frame? I'd like to add, if I turn the camera off then back on, it looses the manual focus that I spent time on. As you know, time is a killer on heat issues along with battery life on these when shooting 4K. Thanks again for your awesome video! I'm definitely going to archive it. Great job buddy!! 😊😊👍

      Shutter priority is the way to go, so you can make the shutter speed nice and fast. 1/1000sec or something like that. Auto/ Scene selection > Sports will also usually do a great job if your camera offers that ;)

    at about 5:00 you talk about shooting RAW giving you the best possible quality but it will need more work. I'm new and I don't know what that means, what program to use or what else it means. I find that I take blurry images with the camera at times so I would like to know how shooting raw works

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Wayed, when I was referring to getting better quality when shooting raw I did not mean focus or sharpness. Raw files when compared to Jpeg files, have more editing latitude when using a image post processing program like Lightroom for example. As far as getting your photo sharp, you will need to make sure you have the correct focus and shutter speed in order to freeze the action if subjects are moving. A raw photo is basically un-edited. A Jpeg file is processed by the camera and compressed so the file size is significantly smaller than the raw file. Therefore the raw file contains more data in the highlights and shadows in particular, which allows for more advanced highlight and shadow recovery when post processing. I hope that helps! Jay

    As a Fuji user for the past few years, x100s/x-pro1, I'm so tempted by this little camera but am worried I won't be satisfied with the iq compared to the x100s. What's your thoughts. Would love to take a little pocket camera like this on my holiday but keep top iq.

    Hi there, I'm thinking of buying a rx100 mk1 as it sells for a great price now . Is there a big difference in menu options and possibilities between the mk1, mk2, mk3 etc ? Of course there are more 'hardware' features introduced with each newer model but will I find the things you described in the first rx100 as well ? Thanks a lot for your answer ;)

    Hi Jason,
    thanks for the video.
    I'm looking to buy this camera but would like to know if it can record both PAL and NTSC video (50P and 60P). Unfortunately I cannot find this info anywhere...
    :(

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Francisco Penedo I honestly don't know. I believe if you buy in the region where PAL is the standard, then the camera is also that standard. Mine was NTSC @ 30 and 60p. The Sony A7II I currently have only appears to have the NTSC standard on it. I could be wrong about this though....

    can't seem to activate slo mo have it in the right settings but does not slo in camera is it in post production only also how does the 4k still option work always in grey mode

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Lazo It's only going to be slow in post processing if you chose to slow down the clip. The extra frames is what allows for the video to be slowed down in post processing. 60p will allow for 1x slower if you cange it to 30p in post production for example....

      I use the 24p in the USA, so that would be 25p in your case. The 50p and 100p is for higher frame rates and allows for slowing down the video in post processing.

      High ISO, lowest aperture number, and fastest possible shutter speed!!

    I am trying to clarify so I understand because I have had 2 previous head injuries.
    If I am shooting MF, I can adjust the aperture to what I want each time if I am in the P Mode, which normally controls shutter speed and aperture.
    Is that right?
    In the MF in P Mode, can I still adjust the aperture to what I want?

      Yes, but if you want specific control of the aperture itself, I would use the A mode which stands for Aperture Priority Mode.

    First of all, thanks a lot for the comprehensive video, Jay! I bought a camera yesterday to replace my old ancient one. I think I have an older version of yours (it states DSC-RX100 Cyber-Shot on the box, so I think it's the version 1 of the DSC-RX100 line). I will primarily use it to photograph my collectibles indoor, with usually minimal lighting in evenings / Winter.
    Right now I'm trying to figure out how to make a full focus picture of an angled flat surface. My camera unfortunately doesn't have the large-spot focus mode your camera has. But what setting would you use to get a clear focus image of a roughly 8.5 cm (~3.35 inch) flat surface at an angle? Here an example of a picture I just took: i.imgur.com/kBzD5MD.jpg (ignore the date, still have to disable that; and also ignore the flat colors, I've had the flash off for now just to try things out on step at a time). As you can see in this picture, the bottom part is fairly in focus, but the top part not at all. What kind of settings would you use to have an equally distributed focus on the entire angled surface?

      Hi Kevin ;) In order to get a larger depth of field which is what you want in this case, you would need to use a higher aperture number. FOr example if you switch the camera to A Mode and then turn the adjustment dial on the back the aperture will change. Try setting it to f/8 and see what happens ;) The shutter speed will intern slow down and the ISO will go really high if you have it set to Auto, so I would also change the ISO to 100 and use a tripod so the camera does not move for the longer exposure.

      @@Jason_Hermann Thanks, that worked like a charm! It was f1.8 by default, and changing it to f5-f10 really made a difference. I'll play around a bit to see what settings work best where, and have already favorited your video as reference for later. :)
      Thanks again for the great video and the quick reply.

    Wondering how to use your new Sony camera?? It can be a hard learning curve and in this video I will breakdown all the key features that matter. All the newer Sony cybershot and alpha cameras have the same menu system and basic features. So, come along for a ride using the RX100 III and see how and what the camera can do for you ;)

      Jay,
      I have the Sony RX-10. Is there a way to use the camera as a real-time video camera and run the output directly into a computer for live video? I would like to use the camera on Google hangouts in place of a standard web camera for doing live video. Is this possible?

    Hi Jay, I'm new to Sony digital cameras (been a Canon shooter since the 70s) and just received my little RX100 IV this weekend. I'm amazed (and also a bit overwhelmed) with all its features (how can such a tiny thing pack so many features?) and was looking for a tutorial, which brought me here.
    Since the Mark 4 was released at about the same time as Sony's flagship A7RII, everyone seems to concentrate on it and I couldn't find any tutorials/help for us new Mark 4 users, but your RX100 III video was still very helpful to me. Thanks a lot!
    The one feature I'm struggling with right now is Flexible Spot Focusing. I'd like to keep that setting. Is there a simpler way to access it, without having to go into Functions and select it each time? I've been playing with it, but couldn't find a quicker way.
    Anyway, I'll subscribe and maybe you'll do another tutorial for the Mark 4 some day?
