    I typically shoot with a Ricoh GR III, but before purchasing my Ricoh, I used the Sony rx100 series extensively. I owned the rx100 vii for several years before selling it to buy my Olympus. After missing the pocketability, I purchased the original rx100. Is the rx100 still worth buying in 2023? Hopefully the images in this review will help you answer that question.

    The thing is: the camera isn't so important. It's the photographer makes the photos. The art, view and the skills of the photgrapher is more important.

      I don’t exactly disagree but saying that the tools doesn’t matter is not the full truth.. especially the control of the settings is IMO important for a good photographer. Sure you can take great pictures with any camera, but it’s easier to reach your full potential if you can control stuff like the exposure triangle and the focus mode of your tool

    This goes to show that a 12 year old camera still takes better looking photos than the last generation flagship smartphones in 2024. Great video and nice pictures!

    The Rx100 can and will go anywhere with you and the kind of pictures you get is phenomenal. I have the mark 1 and have gotten absolutely gorgeous photos of the places I went, of my friends and family and everything in between. It's a camera that almost feels like it sticks to you wherever you go. No hassle of bags, extra lenses and other stuff.

    This was exactly the video I was looking for. Great idea to let the photos do the talking and the price and lack of worry over beating it up a bit definitely have swayed me to get this over the later iterations. Thanks!

    Great video! I have an RX100 mk3, even more beat up than yours and it's still ticking! When I look at my family photos, whether taken with my Nikons, Sonys or Olympus, it is the ones taken with my little Sony that stand out a memorable. In the early 70s I shot with a GAF pocket camera made by Chinon with a 38mm lens, a focal length I abandoned. Those photos are all about family memories and are priceless. Today, photography is going towards graphic arts, with sky replacements and changing colours of a dress or car. I can guarantee you no future generation will remember or want to keep those. I'm saving my money to buy the latest RX100 and recommend to all to get one too. As much as I love my Olympus EM1m2, nothing beats the no-pressure to produce great photos like an RX100. Shoot souvenirs and family with this tiny wonder and not unremembered art shots with 5kg of camera equipment.

      Yes, I completely agree. It is often the photos I take on cheap/old cameras that I cherish the most. I also have an e-m1m2, and even though it's a small camera, I find myself taking the rx100 more places.

    The real beauty in the MK1 to MK3’s magic lies in the processor/jpg processing where lots of highlight details can be maintained and they look great straight out of camera.
    Sometimes, a smaller sensor makes it easier for a specific processing system to perform well, resulting in very pleasing jpgs.
    In many countries, even old Mk3s are still not cheap, which is a testament to its great performance and quality.

    • @mipmipmipmipmip
      @mipmipmipmipmip ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't MK3 basically a pre-ZV-1? I love my ZV-1 but replacement cost is too high to bring it everywhere. Grains of sand already were planning to wreak havoc on my ZV-1 at the beach. MK3 is now about €200 less than used ZV-1, becomes more reasonable for a designated 'beater' camera.

    I bought a RX100 mk1 a few months ago and I've been having fun kitting it out. People love their EVFs and bendy screens but I feel like an even an extra quarter inch of thickness or 60 extra grams matters when the major point of the camera is to be pocketable, and I've found the screen to be perfectly serviceable, especially if you set the screen to manual full brightness or the "Sunny Weather" mode. After the screen protector I got some tiny 6mm split rings and put them through the miniscule cord hole so I could attach a leather wrist strap, and a 42mm MagFilter ring to use with a polarizer. More extravagantly I 3D printed a custom grip based on the Hasselblad Stellar (which itself was just a rebranded mk1) that I found on a 3d model website and attached it with a special craft double-sided "SuperTape". I have also ended up shooting manual in RAW+jpeg on black and white mode, as the camera's B&W science hides a lot of sins with the sensor especially in low light, and I can always revert the RAW to full color in an editor if I want to make a real picture out of it. Setting the control ring to ISO mode lets me dial in the shutter speed and aperture manually and then choose the ISO and has proven the simplest way for me to manage the exposure triangle.

    Most of my cameras began life around 2014 / 2015 when it seemed to be a golden age for digital cameras. Newest is a Sony RX100 Vii.
    I like your video, old cameras are brilliant value for money. I'm not bothered about specs, it either works or it doesn't at this level.
    Its a great little camera!

    • @LukeTaylorPhotography
      @LukeTaylorPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I agree. I've tried several cameras from the 2014/2015 era and they've convinced me camera technology hasn't advanced as much as some of the marketing departments want us to believe. A few years ago I owned the a7rii (which I believe was released in 2015) and it was a fabulous piece of technology even 5-6 years after release.

    I own my RX 100 since 2015. Unbeatable form factor. An EVF would be very nice in bright conditions.
    But the auto mode is also quite good, so that a blind shot delivers usable images too.

    Great video! I've been alternating between my RX100M5 and my A7RIV a lot in recent months, and thinking that people who mainly shoot with a standard zoom lens on a full frame body would actually be a lot better off with using an RX100 for that. Incredible piece of kit, absolutely punches above its weight.
    As for cropping, I've been able to get Instagram-usable results cropped all the way to 1.5 megapixels!

    Bought this beauty back in 2016 for a pretty penny not gonna lie BUT 7-8 years later she’s still going very strong. It had a lot of buzz when it came out and I remember it being vlogger’s camera of choice for a bit (which is funny) BUT- I believe it’s underrated now. Like you said- you can get it for under $200 (which is so much less than I did ooooof) and I think it’s for sure worth it

    I bought a used mk3 recently as a backup for the Canon G7x that I use when cycling. I shoot while riding and someday I'll drop and break it, so wasn't about to buy something new and pricey for that. The Sony takes great shots, but shooting one handed while riding, I had a tendency to bump the mode and exposure comp dials when getting it out. So the G7X will be my first choice for this use. Not a problem for most people, though.

    Ha, what a coincidence! I happen to have the RX100 Mk I as well, and I used it for a couple of years until switching to the Ricoh GR in 2015 (at that time, the GR I). The beautiful images you showcased in this video inspire me to perhaps exhume the camera. 😊A little tip: I have a filter set for the RX100, where you stick a tiny base plate on the front of the lens barrel (an almost invisible magnetic ring that won't get in the way of the lens closure blades when powering the camera on and off), and just attach any matching filter you like. E.g. an ND filter so you could record pretty decent 1080p video during bright daylight conditions. But man, your camera looks pretty battered... 🤨😀

    • @LukeTaylorPhotography
      @LukeTaylorPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      When I had the mark vii a few years ago, I had the magnetic ring thing (I can’t remember what it was called). I was hesitant to buy it originally because I thought it was a little sketchy, but after installing it, it worked great. I used to use a variable nd filter with mine. I haven’t installed one on the mark i because they are not easy to find in Albania lol.

    I bought the RX100-3 recently, a wonderful compact camera, no match to Full Frame, but better than any point-and-shot. My complain is 70 mm long end, it is not enough, other complain is a flat release bottom, which is difficult to grab when it's needed. This problem I solved by gluing a little bump on the top of it. Camera cost me $32.- on flea market.

    You can actually fix that rear screen deterioration problem. It turns out the original camera shipped from the factory has a screen protector, a soft screen protector. It can be easily pealed off to reveal a pristine screen. I learned this from a TH-cam video. Mine was really bunged up when I bought it in a thrift store. I pealed it off and it was perfect.

    Ricoh GR III, Sony RX100 Mk5 or Sony RX100 Mk7... Which is the best pocketable camera from your point of view?
    I had the RX100 Mk5 and in my opinion, the biggest reason to move to Mk6 or Mk7 was the touch screen more than the zoom. The lens in the Mk5 is really good in terms of maximum aperture...
    My issue with RX100 was its ergonomics (which could have been improved with a touch screen).
    Sony missed the shot with not having a Mk5 with touch screen... Mk6 and Mk7 have lost the ND filter (really important if you want to do video) and have got a lens with bigger reach, but lower max aperture.
    I have the GR IIIx and in terms of ergonomics, it wins hands down any RX100... Of course, you are limited to a fix focal length (but you have an APSC sensor).

    Did you put the colour photo of the 2 boats in the bnw section to see if people were really paying attention to the video? 😁. I've been thinking about getting a RX100 mkii, I want the tilting screen and wifi, due to poor health. I suffer with pain pretty much all over these days and carrying a bag on my back with cameras, lenses, filters and whatever else I may need are a thing of the past so I was looking for something suitable so I could continue with my love of photography and I am 90% convinced the rx100 ii is that camera. I did buy a sony hx9v off ebay for £21 a few weeks back to see how well I would get on with a compact and really like it so I know I will like the rx100 even though it has less zoom range than the hx9v.

      @LukeTaylorPhotography  ปีที่แล้ว

      haha no, I didn't put the color image in there intentionally... clearly you were paying more attention than I was when editing haha. The tilting screen on the older rx100 is definitely a worthwhile feature. The tilt screen is the feature I miss most when shooting my mki and my Ricoh GR. I haven't tried the hx9v or the Sony's with smaller sensors, but I bet they can still make great images in decent light.

      I've never used the original Ricoh GR (only the GR III). If I had to guess, I would think the Sony's images are on par with the original GR, but when shooting at 28mm the Sony isn't as good as the GR III. That said, if you want to take photos of things far away, the Ricoh GR's fixed lens can't compare with the rx100's zoom lens... just depends on your style of photography. Everything has trade-offs.

    I always hear people rave about the dynamic range of these cameras, and I've wondered if there's something wrong with my MkIII. Compared to my LUMIX G9 or even my LX100, I can never come remotely close to pulling back the highlights like I can with those and have often found myself underexposing by a stop or more just to be able to save the highlights.

One shot I tried had an LED light reflecting off my MacBook and while my LX100 and G9 had no problem recovering highlights, they were completely blown out on the RX100. The pictures are very grainy. Also colors look like they have low bit depth in plenty of instances. There were weird color casts in many photos. Some photos were okay, but overall it's just not exactly what one would expect from 1 inch sensor compact. In terms of colors and noise modern 1/2.3" are much better, maybe even older 1/2.3" cameras are better. I hope that it's just weird auto mode.

    A bit of a PSA - the motor/zoom mechanism in the OG rx100s will start to fail, rendering the camera unusable. Happened to mine - after long years of service mind you. I then managed to pick up another very cheaply at a flea market, that too started exhibiting the same failure after a few months.
    Pretty sure its just a case of "nothing lasts forever" and wear and tear, but any M1 rx100 you find is going to be very old and with lots of wear and tear.
