The year was 2000. I was at Zagato in Portman Square, the old Lamborghini showroom. In there was a red SZ and a yellow RZ AND a yellow integrale. I was there for the integrale but my head did turn at the two Alfas. All three were about £18k. I bought the integrale - Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evolution 2 in Giallo in MINT new condition with only several K on the clock. WHAT A CAR!!!! had it for 2 years. Wish I;d kept it now!! :) Now looking at one of these!
What a great car. It may not be the best at anything, but I just think it has tons of personality...plus, it's a Zagato! Also, 90's and 00's Alfas get absolutely disqualfied just because they're FWD. Honestly, drive a GTV 916, 145 Cloverleaf, 147 GTA. They aren't bad at all for the period and are even on par or better than their competition at the time.
Alfa Romeos design is extraordinary for this period. A few other cars such as the Sierra rs500 we're experimenting with bi plane high mounted wings, which gives a very futuristic look especially for the time. Wonderful car.
This is a great buy today. Turns 30 now in 2020, you can register it as an ‚oldtimer‘. All mechanical stuff is stock (Alfa 75). It’s quite quick; corners nicely, sounds great, and gets a lot of looks. It is a bargain today, but buy now - this is the last limited production Alfa which is still somewhat affordable!
Busso’s engine and Alfa 75 IMSA drivetrain, fine tuned by Mr Pianta, a Lancia Rally team ex pilot and manager. More importantly, it featured a Thermoplastic body, fully assembled at Zagato. Alfa was a successful racing team during the 80s and 90s, this car wasn’t intended to compete with Aston or whatever sport cars manufacturer, this car was intended to show the world Fiat Group car body technology and manufacturing capabilities.
Glad to see SZ content! It's not fibreglass by the way but rather thermo plastic injection moulded composite. This explains the weight and the high torsional regidity of the car. It even has an aluminium roof and carbon fibre rear spoiler! What I like about the SZ is it ticks every motor head box...distinct styling, superb handling, glorious flexible Busso engine, proper 5 speed and a sound track to die for. Alfa and Bugatti are taking ques from the headlight treatment...today! Once I disliked the styling...Now I totally get it..they were just way ahead of their time.
It cannot be described as a pretty car. It is, however, incredibly stylish. Not all works of art are easy on the eye but sometimes that makes them more interesting. Alfa SZ is one of my all time favourite bits of automotive artwork.
When I was about 12 or 13, sometime in the early-mid 90s, we went on a family holiday to the west coast of Scotland. I'd bought a car magazine to read on the trip. I can't remember if it was Car or Autocar but it had a bit on the Alfa SZ. I remember thinking how cool it would be to see one in real life. Later that day we were stopped at a beach car park when an SZ drove passed on the main road. As clear as day it was an SZ. I couldn't believe it. It wasn't a dream. It was weird. I've never seen another one since.
Fabulous car, what character that design has without being pretty. The engine noise is great also. That colour of interior is proper Italian too. These cars are far more interesting to watch than all those new hypercars that keep being shown on countless youtube channels where if you do not have the newest one out, then it is yesterdays news.
@@studiocalder818 Yep, they're all about the gadgets and big numbers. I expect many of those 'adult children' think those things are what you need in a car, and have never driven a light, responsive car on a good road. To be fair, there aren't many light, fun new cars available these days.
@@rosstee that's true. And what about the tons of absurd heavy-light (sometime sport!) trucks so called suvs: unbeatable to carry just a person, take the child to school and break some pavement...
one of my all time favourites. I might be wrong, but I believe it was Robert Opron (of Citroen SM fame) who did the original design, but his was considered too tame. If you are going to do 'ugly' then do it with confidence, and I think Alfa succeeded here!
Regardless of if you love the looks or hate them. It divides opinion, it starts conversations, people talk about it for ether good or bad reasons...... And this is why I really don't care much for modern cars, know one gives a shit or cares (rightly so) This tho..... is amazingly special.
That v6 is one of the best ever made and it's probably the cheapest way to get into a zagato car still look amazing today considering it's 30 years old
Huge fan of the SZ. I bought my RZ (the convertible version, the Roadster Zagato) just over 21 years ago, and still love it. I wonder how much the aftermarket suspension has hurt the handling on this one, though. Just as much as the looks and the sound, the handling is the thing that makes these cars outstanding. Not a criticism of the owner at all, I know how hard it is to get some of the more bespoke bits and pieces.
I dont think you could call it a typically beautiful car, but i personally think it is a very good looking car. I love them, its always been high in my dream car list.
I really don’t see how people think it’s ugly. To me, it’s easily one of the coolest, most aggressive hatchbacks of all time. From the sporty hood bulge, to the low & sleek black roof, to the spoiler, to the boxy beefiness, to the low ride height. It’s amazing from every angle
Love it, though i really do appreciate weirder looking older cars, so a bit biased when it comes to the exterior appearance! That exhaust note, though a little 'ricey' complements it very well. Very interesting car, good choice!
The final evolution of Alfa's transaxle cars from the 70's and 80's. Many of the upgraded suspension and brake improvements on the SZ made their way in to the aftermarket for the rest of us to improve our Alfettas, GTV6's and Milanos/75's...
Ah, the infamous "Il Mostro". Adored and hated by many in equal measure. Personally, it's one of my all time favourite cars from the 90's. I love it's styling, but then again, Carrozzeria Zagato's styling it's not everybody's cup of tea. Thank you for the review, not a lot of car reviewers talk about this Italian icon of the 90's. P.S- Even if you wouldn't mention the fact that it is a Japanese import, at 3:01 on the top right corner of the screen, the eagle-eyed of you would spot the famous JDM flares that were mandatory in all cars. A cool little detail.
There were not many built, but they're clearly appreciated by the Scots. I saw one in a driveway in North Queensferry a few years back. That makes it at least 2 examples in a roughly 50 miles radius.
I fell in love with the design the very moment I saw it in the car magazines, although I can't remember what auto show they did the premiere at. Still love the design today. No compromises. An the Busso V6 sings like no other road car engine does. There's almost a musical note to it at certain revs, something you otherwise mostly find in a properly set up V12. Only wish I could afford one :)
THAT EXHAUST NOISE AT THE START !!!! ❤ OH MY

I guess I can see how this would have been seen as cutting edge for 1990. (another American)
From when I saw it 1st time beck then I found it a radical courageous beauty. Which is why I watch your video.
It cannot be described as a pretty car. It is, however, incredibly stylish. Not all works of art are easy on the eye but sometimes that makes them more interesting. Alfa SZ is one of my all time favourite bits of automotive artwork.
I can't decide if I like the looks.. But the sound! Wow.
That steering wheel is beautiful
I really love the looks. My jaw dropped when I saw a yellow one parked up at Gatwick multistorey.
Fabulous car, what character that design has without being pretty. The engine noise is great also. That colour of interior is proper Italian too.
These cars are far more interesting to watch than all those new hypercars that keep being shown on countless youtube channels where if you do not have the newest one out, then it is yesterdays news.
Totally agree...
The new hypercars seems to me complex toys designed for adult children. And they are big, big, unnecessarily big. Why?
@@studiocalder818 Yep, they're all about the gadgets and big numbers. I expect many of those 'adult children' think those things are what you need in a car, and have never driven a light, responsive car on a good road. To be fair, there aren't many light, fun new cars available these days.
@@rosstee that's true.
And what about the tons of absurd heavy-light (sometime sport!) trucks so called suvs: unbeatable to carry just a person, take the child to school and break some pavement...
studio calderini They need to tax cars on weight and width
Great to see some of my favourite spirited driving roads around the campsies! Superb sounding car
one of my all time favourites.
That v6 is one of the best ever made and it's probably the cheapest way to get into a zagato car still look amazing today considering it's 30 years old
Looks better than most stuff you see these days, at least its different, it looks like a car not an appliance. great interior!
I love Jay's word choices. He says things like "fruity" and has referred to himself as a "tart". :-) Love this channel.
Thankyou, internet guy!
Love. I am a fan of cars you never see, and I have never seen or heard of one before.
It looks and sounds freeken awesome. I think it looks contemporary. Gorgeous car !
Always loved these, a very cool car indeed.
Love it, though i really do appreciate weirder looking older cars, so a bit biased when it comes to the exterior appearance! That exhaust note, though a little 'ricey' complements it very well. Very interesting car, good choice!
Lovely scenery and driving shots Jay! Love the review and your passion for cars!
It looks really exotic ! I wish the era comes back when most performance oriented cars seemed exotic ,even if they weren't !
OK now stoP! seriously .....all the cars I want..... you are killing meee
On the one hand it's ugly. On the other I love it. Unlike other cars of it's era it still looks fresh today. Weird, but fresh.
The final evolution of Alfa's transaxle cars from the 70's and 80's. Many of the upgraded suspension and brake improvements on the SZ made their way in to the aftermarket for the rest of us to improve our Alfettas, GTV6's and Milanos/75's...
SZ zagato is my favorite Alfa of all time
No matter what the fashionistas of the day say. An Alfa can NEVER be described as ugly.
Good review. Amazing car. Styling wise I find it brutishly handsome. Fitting nickname the Italians had for it.
Great car! I love this form for being radical straight.
Never see one live.
Thanks for that! 👍❤️
Sounds sooo good! Looks extraordinary 👌
gorgeous little car & so powerful, I simply love it!
been dreaming about one of these for a long time....find it intriguing..love it, want it.
its been a brutally gorgeous beast from the first moment i laid eyes on it
There were not many built, but they're clearly appreciated by the Scots.
Just FANTASTIC. One of my absolute dreamcars. Would sit very fine next to my Alfa 75 3.0
What a classic. I do like the looks, concept👍🏻
This thing looks and sounds amazing. Oddly the rear end reminds me of a C6 Corvette
