A rogue tank of all males has worked for many similar to doing an all male Malawi peacock aquarium. However once a single female of almost any species is introduced wether intentional or by accident all hell will more than likely break loose. Most Meso American cichlids have strong mandibular muscles and dentition which can definitely cause some damage

Thank you, super informative and inspiring! How many Vieja all the same type do you recommend for my 90 gallon? I was thinking of Bifasciatus or Fenestrata. Any input would be appriciated. Great channel
Bifasciatus albeit slower growing gets to a massive size where even a pair in the 90 may be too much. Fennestratus depending on locale can be very aggressive. Several Of the melanurus types stay around a foot. Although not a Vieja but still similar in diet etc... Oscars heterospilus another good option. IMHO for a 90 If it were me I would be looking at a good of a Thorichthys species and possibly a small group of a cryptoheros or Amatitlania. I am truly honoured. Thank you kindly for the nice words my friend. Soon as the world returns to its regular program I shall be heading back to COTA. We have several ideas ready to go
Some really great footage and an amazing fish room. The captioning while the interviewing was going really bugged me, because I had to stop the video to read. Not everyone is a multitasker! Otherwise an enjoyable share.
Veija bifasciatus 'chacamax' was one of my favourite. One question, does the Palm tree cast offs bring the ph down quick coursing constant adjustments, only ask cos I've been thinking about doing in my tanks.Great vid by the way 👍🇦🇺
Dan says no real change to the chemistry however his tanks are all 300 gallons plus and water change system is turned on daily so chemistry is maintained. Florida aquifer water is all filtered through bare rock that is coralline so very alkaline and stable. Thank you kindly for watching

Definitely. Order direct from the source. The adults you saw in the video. Dan and Marta Sharifi @Cichlids of the America’s out of Florida Here’s their webpage for their available stock list. www.cichlidsoftheamericas.com/id2.html
With the size of his operation he would generally remove his he first spawn and artificially hatch them to ensure success. As you can imagine with this collection some species he has thousands invested in so many he best yields are important for new introductions. But once established in the trade he often lets the parents rear in tank and if not to much aggression.
They maintain all species as species only colonies. The fish at 30:40 is Nosferatu/Herichthys steindacneri. Sadly his large most impressive bifas Chacamax has passed on but he’s growing up a new group
Most wont realize the sheer cost involved in acquiring his wild breeding stock. The amount of trips and research into finding some of these specimens is extremely costly and sometimes to come back with nothing. Which happens far more often than one would expect. Collecting in most of these countries today is challenging at best. I know of at least one species in his facility that he has over $30K invested in already with only about 18 live specimens that brings the cost per animal to around $1800. Zero hobbyists would pay anywhere near those prices. And that’s his break even cost. As almost all his stock is wild caught be himself and his collectors I’m sure you better appreciate the costs in amassing such a collection. I for one am extremely happy to have people like him taking the lead in doing this and bringing some of these amazing fishes back into the hobby.
Hey chris, great video. I have a question and maybe you know the answer. I have a amphilopus hogaboomorun and a Texas green cichlid they are tank mates and now they've laid eggs, does this combination already exist? Can't find anything online. Or maybe you know who I could ask. Many thanx Angéla
Thank hanks for watching Angela. Honestly I wouldn’t know. Personally encouraging the proliferation of hybrids when there’s so many naturally beautiful species available is not my cup of tea. To each their own. The Asian fish keeping culture has always encouraged hybridization. Koi and goldfish and their many colours and forms are all derived from a natural grey/green carp species. Sorry I wasn’t of much help. I wish you the best.
@@themadaquarist thank you for your reply, we weren't planning to crossbreed these cichlids. We are a shelter for fish that need new homes because their previous owners could not longer take care for them due to size or agression. So "Barry " the Male was very aggressive and the only fish he could be with was the green Texas, and now they've laid eggs. So not ment to be. Because I agree that fish in their own species are Beautiful of their own.
@@themadaquarist the eggs just hatched lol Barry is a real good dad, very busy taking care of them. Taking them from de awkward stone to a safe place on the floor, Miss hot Lips ( mom) is confused (diverend species ) and wants to bring the fry back to the stone. But Barry is more hard working and faster and not being confused lol. Think he wins 😉
Is there variants of mayan cichlids? Are they brighter colors in different regions? Been in the hobby for many years. Always wondered about the species.
@@themadaquarist thank you.. appreciate there you replied. i sent screenshot of them and people couldn't guess they're fenestratus because they're so colorful.. do you think there are more variations in fenestratus than melanura?..its hard to believe and at the same time amazing that all these fendstratus are the same species..so many colors, patterns and body structure..some of these males with the classic double ducker bus shape are my favorites✌

I’m #500 thumbs up! Now have dan send me some complimentory vieja hartwegis!!😃 just kidding I will gladly buy them thanks for this great tour. Also subscribed today 8-23-20!
Thank you for watching. His stock quality is top notch
Several
Of the melanurus types stay around a foot.
We have several ideas ready to go
Your full of info love it 🙂
Very kind of you, thank you
My favorites are the Asfraci and gomani.... of course these are the species I’m looking for
Both solid choices!
WOW, WHAT AN AMAZING SETUP. DEFINITELY SAVING UP MONEY FOR AN ORDER. 🐠😂🐠
I really cannot wait to get back there
@@themadaquarist I COULD SEE WHY!🐠🐠🐠
Some really great footage and an amazing fish room. The captioning while the interviewing was going really bugged me, because I had to stop the video to read. Not everyone is a multitasker! Otherwise an enjoyable share.
Thank you kindly or the critic and for watching
Veija bifasciatus 'chacamax' was one of my favourite. One question, does the Palm tree cast offs bring the ph down quick coursing constant adjustments, only ask cos I've been thinking about doing in my tanks.Great vid by the way 👍🇦🇺
Dan says no real change to the chemistry however his tanks are all 300 gallons plus and water change system is turned on daily so chemistry is maintained. Florida aquifer water is all filtered through bare rock that is coralline so very alkaline and stable.
Thank you kindly for watching
Luv n it. Been there and is awesome stuff.
👍🏻
A place where dreams comes true
Nice watch mate , glad i came across another fishkeeper who does tours of other places =D , I just subbed so lets hope we can grow our channels to 1000s =D
I’m honoured my friend. I tour constantly with speaking engagements, conferences, conventions etc... so I’m very fortunate to have been able to go behind the scenes of numerous places. I hope to be able to bring more and more of the world closer to us.
Cheers!
@@themadaquarist perfect mate il be pressing the bell icon don't worry 😂 😂 only person to do a type of tour that I like is aquarium Co op of the fish farms as that's my goal for my channel with a guppy farm.. I want to be the UKs massive guppy farm :) one step at a time... Il be binge watching your videos as we are all in lockdown so I have plenty time 😂 😂. Thank you
I'm looking for some vieja cichlids. I currently have one about 3-4 inches. Any leads to where I can purchase online maybe. I'm in Dallas, Tx
Definitely. Order direct from the source. The adults you saw in the video.
Dan and Marta Sharifi @Cichlids of the America’s out of Florida
Here’s their webpage for their available stock list.
www.cichlidsoftheamericas.com/id2.html
I like the black umbri. Do they sell to hobbyists?do the ship to Canada?
Yes they do sell to hobbyists and yes they ship worldwide.
You can check out his list here:www.cichlidsoftheamericas.com/id2.html
I wish I could hear to what you guys are talking. I'm so fascinated by the fish.
Audio is fine in the video, so you have your sound on?
Yes. But I need to watch this several times as I'm too engrossed in watching all those beauties.
Dan has amazing fish just ordered from him
I’ll be back in January so expect some incredible things to come
How does he breed the fishes? does he move the couples to another thank? or he just get the eggs to another aquarium?
With the size of his operation he would generally remove his he first spawn and artificially hatch them to ensure success. As you can imagine with this collection some species he has thousands invested in so many he best yields are important for new introductions. But once established in the trade he often lets the parents rear in tank and if not to much aggression.
30 minutes, what is red headed fish with festae and who is 30:40?
Impressive fish, I think Chacamax is the most impressive...
They maintain all species as species only colonies. The fish at 30:40 is Nosferatu/Herichthys steindacneri.
Sadly his large most impressive bifas Chacamax has passed on but he’s growing up a new group
I see Dan has been holding off on selling some beauties. I might have to try to 💰bribe him into selling one of those amazing big festae.
HOLY SCHNIKES!!
It’s an insanely cool place
Lol it’s also possible that the eggs are not fertile. Not necessarily Barry’s fault but crosses between gentler a sometimes do not prove fruitful
@@angelawolde6031 do you have any footage of what they grew up into? The colors of the parents are promising
Is there variants of mayan cichlids? Are they brighter colors in different regions? Been in the hobby for many years. Always wondered about the species.
Citrinellus has a fairly wide distribution so yes they can range from white, through orange and red all the way to brown and black
@themadaquarist I was thinking of the Mayaheros urophthalmus potential variants by separate regions.
Wow..Where are those fenestratus from??
They are from the Rio Antigua as per Dan Sharifi @ Cichlids of the Americas
@@themadaquarist thank you.. appreciate there you replied. i sent screenshot of them and people couldn't guess they're fenestratus because they're so colorful.. do you think there are more variations in fenestratus than melanura?..its hard to believe and at the same time amazing that all these fendstratus are the same species..so many colors, patterns and body structure..some of these males with the classic double ducker bus shape are my favorites✌
What are those gorgeous paratheraps/vieja/theraps at 11:23 ?
Vieja melanurus ‘Lago Peten’
