10 Inch Red Devil Cichlid = Dangerous Fish

  • I was forced to remove a fish from my 350 gallon aquarium...a decision made by the dominate fish of the tank my Red Devil. 3 fish were added in his stead. My goal as a fish keeper is balanced aquariums that both my fish and I can enjoy.

    Love that pike, I've often wondered how some people are able to keep larger fish like these 2gether with minimal problems, most of them say just keep them fed well and have a great filter system setup but it has to more than that

    • @dwsdarius

      Thanks, yes he looks good but he can be aggressive...I hate the fact the he's aggressive to my catfish and flagtail...fish that don't cause any problems. My trick to getting my fish to co exist is raising them together from young...I've raised all these fish from very small size and for the most part they've been together...which I believe helps a lot

    In my time of big fish keeping oscars will never make it with a red devil. I had a red devil that grew to 16 inches and the only fish that made it and i later had to separate was my dovii which grew faster and larger. That was in a 550 which the dovii got and the devil got my 350. My dovii lived to be 20 years old 24 inches long and was completely psycho. To feed him i had to have my wife distract him while i fed him on the other end because he would attack you while feeding him. I miss that hobby and have been looking into tanks again. They used to be a dollar a gallon then too. The same 55 gallon kit that was $125 when i was a fish enthusiast is now $450. $125 for just the tank as opposed to $55 just for the tank. I got the 550 at an estate sale for $150 with the stand and fish in it but took the fish which were about 300 africans to the local pet shop got every aggressive large cichlid you can think of and 3 snakeheads which are now illegal to sell. In the end i had around 40 tanks up running and occupied. I know i will never find a 550 thay cheap again but im web searching like crazy

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow! Yes this hobby is seeing inflation big time and there's no sign of it getting better, even used tanks are expensive. Best bet is to get tanks from petco with there 50% off deals, no as good a dollar per gallon but the best deal these days. That with a diy stand

    I had a red devil like that, bullied everything in his tank, even bigger fish, that is until he met my Texas cichlid

    • @peaceful4you408
      @peaceful4you408 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Texas Cichlid will be able to hold his own for only a short while but eventually he too will succumb to the Red Devil eventually. There is literally nothing that can take on a typical Red Devil from what ive seen and Ive owned almost every predatory fish in capativity imaginable. I was convinced the Red Devils are the most aggressive when mine killed my 13" Dovii Cichlid at only 10".

    Is a 1.5-inch Firemouth cichlid and a 2.5-inch common pike cichlid in a 29 gallon a good idea?

    • @saurabhnayak1036
      @saurabhnayak1036 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how many territories are present in the tank(plants, rocks, driftwood), pikes have a really strong jaw so the firemouth will be at risk if ever they start fighting(very likely).

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I agree in that size tank the pike could likely kill the firemouth as they grow

      13 1/2" Dovii. Red Devils cannot be underestimated. I can not stress that enough to people. They are probably one of the most, if not, the most unpredictable fish out there.
