You should lube the sprocket bearing and the wire you referred to is the worm gear arm, which goes into the notch on the sprocket. Stihl recommends you rotate the sprocket one full turn and the arm will drop into the notch. You can tell if it has if you can get the outside washer and E clip on the end of the shaft. If not, you will not be able to get these on the shaft. If you force these on, you can knock the arm off the worm gear and you saw will not oil the bar.

I see the chain bumper/teflon insert below bar mount studs. There are insert slots, above the bar studs and on the cover upper and lower. Did your saw have all four?

Thank you Mark! I took my MS290 apart several weeks ago to replace the oil pump. Since it took several weeks to get the new pump, I had forgotten the reassembly order! Well done video.

Thanks for the video. I replaced the engine and was not totally clear on how the pump drive was assembled.

Check the oiler tank vent, rare they fail but it happens.

Excellent video. Was afraid of what I would find under the clutch bell and even more afraid as to how it all fit back. Very easy.

The oil pump problem is typical, but I'm more concerned about the plastic bearings that are a known ticking time bomb on the MS non-pro series of saws. Lots of MS290 & the non-pro MS series saws fail early due to those plastic bearings.. If you don't catch it in time (most don't, unless they get lucky & notice the plastic debris while replacing something else), it'll destroy the entire engine. That's why these new non-pro saws will never last like the old ones did. The conscientious, planned self-destruction of their non-pro saws in a few short years of use is obvious in these new homeowner oriented saws, since quality bearings wouldn't have cost much more to install, and would have provided much longer service life..

Never run chainsaws at the recommended oil mix ratio and oiling issues will disappear. I never go below 40:1 and have never had an oil related failure. PS, replace your drum/spur sprocket every few chains...your chains will stretch a whole lot less and last much longer.

this is a weak area in the Stihl, the plastic parts are unreliable ...
