All parents do The Best they can, regardless if they fall short. That's why when we each take responsibility for our own lives as adults, as Drew has, we realise our parents were ok ... again they did The Best they could at the time :-)
I highly recommend the recent interview she did with Jeannette Mcardy. It's pretty clear she has very complicated relationships with her parents. It seems the reason she gave them was more for herself than for them.
The second she realized he was going to make an appearance, Drew regressed into that adorable little girl we all fell in love with. She's one of those people you couldn't imagine everyone not loving her and yet she has had to face difficulties few of us could ever relate to or understand. Her success after overcoming the horrors of her childhood is a true testament to her strength and she inspires people everyday with it.
I think all those years ago, he saw this beautiful, talented little girl and he saw her potential flickering like a flame and he knew that, if left to be raised solely at the hands of her family alone, that flicker would be snuffed out sooner rather than later so I think he felt an obligation to 6-year old Drew to ensure that inner flame was nurtured and cultivated into the blazing fire we see in her today. He knew she needed him but through the years, as they've grown closer and into something more like family than friends, he learned that he had needed her just as much. Their friendship is so beautiful to me and I'm so glad they have each other.

Drew is one of those people I will always hope for the best for. Her life hasn't been easy with her struggles with mental health and everything else that has happened.
I legitimately thought that Drew Barrymore was just a fan of Spielberg's work, but I never knew how close of a connection Barrymore and Spielberg had with each other. It's very nice.
Ok this was kind of just adorable. Clearly Spielberg is a father figure to Drew that she really needed since her dad just wasnt parent material. And as Steven said she trained him to be a dad. This was just so sweet. Love that their families seem to be close like extended family.
I had a lucky chance of meeting Mr. Spielberg at my former job. He took an hour out of his day to talk to me and he was super friendly. Definitely one of the legends in the world of directors! And a nice, genuine guy too.
@Jalen Johnson Hi! I used to work in East Hampton Village in the Hamptons of Long Island in law enforcement. I was walking in the parking lot and he was leaving one of the stores with his wife Kate Capshaw (she was super nice too). I went up to him and told him I was a fan. He asked my name, and the rest is history. I told him that I grew up with the Indiana Jones series and he told me that a fifth one was being developed. Bare in mind, this was in 2019 so I was one of the first to hear about it, in my words. 🤣 I told him that I enjoyed 1941, one of the movies he did that was a flop and he said "Wow, I never got that praise from anyone. People hated that movie". And talking about Jaws, Schindler's List, the list (no pun intended) goes on. He was such a nice guy. If you didn't know his films or what he looked like, you wouldn't think he was famous. I also met Robert Downey, Jr. on his bike, Alan Alda and his wife and Alec Baldwin (years before the shooting incident). He was cool too. Didn't come off as a jerk like he does. Mr. Spielberg was amazing.
@Joy Underwood I told him how I grew up with the Indiana Jones series and how much I loved his 1979 flop "1941", which is probably his most underrated movie. He told me "Wow, not many people tell me that. You know I got crapped on for that movie. I thought my career was over. Then my buddy George (George Lucas) said that Raiders of the Lost Ark would help." It did. He's a funny guy too. He asked my name and shook my hand. He was so awesome.
This had me in tears. The depth of relationship they share is so sweet and meaningful. Our world would be less if the two of them hadn't found each other.
Drew got me with the cry. There’s only a few people that pull on my heartstrings. And I really felt that from Drew. She really needed that parental reinforcement. She was a child and had to find that guidance and discipline and she is a success because she’s still here
“The first man to show me he cared about me.” I cried like 8 times in this clip wtf. Drew’s has such a wild life that most young people have no clue about. And I agree with Steve I want her directing more films . I also want her in more films because she’s my fav actress
O my god she made me cried when she said “he was the first person I knew who cared about me” She made me laugh then cry and laugh and cry. I am so proud of Drew she is such an amazing person.
"You were my training wheels for fatherhood." This reminded me of something similar that my mother said about her foster baby brothers & sisters sparking in her a kind of parental empathy and urge to protect children.
Yes... She is all those adjectives... She has this familiar, overt warmth about her that "drew" us all in but it is her auroral spirit that has kept us captivated for decades.
This is some of the MOST AMAZING Television I have ever seen. 10 short minutes resounds through American culture, each of these two people who have had profound impact on our times.
Savannah: "Can you venture a guess about who is about to join us right now?" Drew: "The first person who cared about me?" 😢😢😢 It's sweet but also, a seven year old should already have people who care about her.
I cried from the moment Drew's eyes shone. This is why she's my favorite and will always be. Because she's gone through so much, and she's still open to fully love and live every single moment. There's no ounce of insincerity in her. And she doesn't shy away from expressing her real emotions. She makes real connections with the people around her. I'm so happy Mr. Spielberg was there for her all her life. What a wonderful and beautiful relationship!
I can say the same about my 1st (late) husband. The 1st best person to happen to me. More than my parents & siblings. Through him, I learned that I, too, matter. I’m so blessed that I have more constant memories of him & our daughter, who passed away at 7-1/2 yrs. young, through our son & two grandsons. I see so much of Bob & Sarah in my son & his boys. My heart is full.
This is honestly so precious. I thank God He put an angel there for Drew when she needed one. Thank you Mr Spielberg for hearing and responding to the call. ❤
As someone who had a chaotic mother, having people who love you without limit and show you true gentleness and kindness is truly special. I named my oldest daughter after the two women who were great, kind, giving people. I strive to be the parent they showed me a person could be.❤
When she cried seeing Steven that made me cry as well. i just can't imagine how meaningful her life was with this man who gave him more than just a big break in showbusiness. God Bless them
I'm just like this 😭 when Steven said that Drew was his training wheels before he & Kate have children. Reminds me of my fave teacher's son, who said at his dad's memorial, that all of his students, like me, helped shape his dad to shape him. Dang waterworks! RIP to my teacher, Mr. Dominic Castro 😢
Aww that's sweet that she got emotional. I always thought that Steven seemed like a lovely person. I recently heard Ke Huy Quan say that he still sends him a xmas present every year, and has for 38 years! I think he still cares and thinks about people he's worked with over the years.
She is such a precious soul. That fact she immediately breaks down when she sees him shows what a good impact he was on her. Love them both. ❤ Such a sweet moment.
What a gift Spielberg gave her from a young age. The gift of loving enough to help bring out the best in another. I like how he made paper doll clothes and covered the exposed parts. She took that the way it was intended. 💟
“I love Whip It so much” -Steven Spielberg. That was just so sweet. Imagine being a child actor, growing up to make your own film and the first director you ever worked with praises your film. And not just any director: Fricking Steven Spielberg. The guy who made Schindler´s List.
I have never seen her in person, but she is one one of JetBlue’s customers. As in she loves to fly with them. When I worked for them, during the training they talked to us about her & how she flies with them a lot & how she is loved by every employee that comes in contact with her. To the point they make it a point to tell us about her during training!!
@@YmarieP1 That's such a great reputation to have. You can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat anyone in customer service and hospitality industries.
My heart just broke when she started crying and said, the first person who cared about me. She's so authentic and vulnerable and strong all at the same time! I love Drew!
I legitimately thought that Drew Barrymore was just a fan of Spielberg's work, but I never knew how close of a connection Barrymore and Spielberg had with each other. It's very nice.
You didn't know Drew was in ET?
@@tiadaid I did not.
He’s also her godfather
Ok this was kind of just adorable. Clearly Spielberg is a father figure to Drew that she really needed since her dad just wasnt parent material. And as Steven said she trained him to be a dad. This was just so sweet. Love that their families seem to be close like extended family.
Drew was Spielberg's training wheels for fatherhood... That is a beautiful and touching statement he said. 💗 Happy Birthday!!!!!
I had a lucky chance of meeting Mr. Spielberg at my former job. He took an hour out of his day to talk to me and he was super friendly. Definitely one of the legends in the world of directors! And a nice, genuine guy too.
An hour? May I inquire more about this? Where was it and how did it come about?
I'm surprised that he doesn't come off as a snob, like most celebrities who lose their humanity once they become famous.
I'm so happy to hear that about Mr. Spielberg! He's always been one of my favorite directors! 😊
She’s the best. I love that she’s vulnerable.
Im vulnerable as well and im still single smdh i thought girls like mentally weak guys in distress.
Good to hear of a Hollywood producer that cared properly for a child.
Drew got me with the cry. There’s only a few people that pull on my heartstrings. And I really felt that from Drew. She really needed that parental reinforcement. She was a child and had to find that guidance and discipline and she is a success because she’s still here
“Thank you for my life.” Wow, can you imagine?
“The first man to show me he cared about me.” I cried like 8 times in this clip wtf. Drew’s has such a wild life that most young people have no clue about. And I agree with Steve I want her directing more films . I also want her in more films because she’s my fav actress
Grooming.
True
“He’s like the first PERSON I knew cared”
O my god she made me cried when she said “he was the first person I knew who cared about me” She made me laugh then cry and laugh and cry. I am so proud of Drew she is such an amazing person.
"You were my training wheels for fatherhood."
This reminded me of something similar that my mother said about her foster baby brothers & sisters sparking in her a kind of parental empathy and urge to protect children.
Drew is the kindest, genuine and most likable and awkward person in the world! I am a huge Drew Barrymore fan. :)
Yes... She is all those adjectives... She has this familiar, overt warmth about her that "drew" us all in but it is her auroral spirit that has kept us captivated for decades.
@@sunnidavis195 how can I meet her?
@@JustinMacri007 I wouldn't have any idea but if you figure it out, let me know! 😹
@@sunnidavis195 I mean does she have Instagram etc?
Me too 💥...,love love ❤️ her ....
This is some of the MOST AMAZING Television I have ever seen. 10 short minutes resounds through American culture, each of these two people who have had profound impact on our times.
I love the way Mr. Spielberg put Drew under his wings... the real fatherly love. 😘❤️
Savannah: "Can you venture a guess about who is about to join us right now?"
Drew: "The first person who cared about me?" 😢😢😢
It's sweet but also, a seven year old should already have people who care about her.
He was basically a father figure for her... Her dad wasn't the best as I heard...
When I saw that part, I cried.
Very sad
Sadly, not all 7 years olds have someone who cares for/about them :( Its tragic, truly
Awww 🥺🙁🥲🥲🥲
I've always heard that he treats people and employees in public with the outmost respect. Hats off to drew!
Why can’t all people treat each other this way??? That was so very sweet and heartwarming. I loved this interview
Unfortunately have you read some of the comments from quite a few folks on this post?
It's important to recognize the special people in your life and to celebrate them. This episode is moving me to tears. Happy Birthday Drew! :)
I’m crying! I don’t cry wtf, their genuine adoration & love for each other is so undeniable.
"The first person that cared about me"
This is so heartbreaking but whyy
Because the first people to care about us SHOULD be our parents ☹️ but thankfully she’s clearly gotten the support that she needed eventually in life.
Aww she’s so sweet 🥲 I’m glad to share a birthday with her❤️it’s so heartbreaking tho..
When Drew said that, I totally got choked up!
@@snook7100 💛💛💛
This is honestly so precious. I thank God He put an angel there for Drew when she needed one. Thank you Mr Spielberg for hearing and responding to the call. ❤
When Stephen Spielberg tells you you have directorial talent, you quit whatever you're doing and go do that - DIRECT. I would faint.
I would faint 😂🤣 yes so true…
@ivory s. B Right!!! 🙌
Awww "Drewface" 😭this was so sweet. I never realized that Steven Spielberg was so nice.
I fell Spielberg as father of entire generation. His work always touch my heart.
I also was 6 in 1981 when E.T movie came out and Drew is like a friend that I’ve never met. She’s one of the best actors of our generation.
Can you imagine Steven Spielberg calling you a gifted director? Time to get to work.
She is a great director,Whip It is great
I hope she directs again soon
@@davidao2551 Whip It is good! 👌👍💪
Yes, Drew Get to Work! ACTION!! ☺️❤️❤️❤️
She needs to direct again.
Let's hope she got the message.
Steven is the man! There's a reason why his movies have a heart and soul to them, and that's because he's a good human being.
He literally made this grown, seasoned woman MELT. Love is the answer!
I love Drew's raw honestly and vulnerability. she is a rare gem in this world. ✨️
This was so moving. Glad that Steven was able to do this.
A father is a daughter's first love
Love the bond between them, and for me Drew still has the innocent face she had when she was a kid
Spot on 👍🏻
She is such a precious soul. That fact she immediately breaks down when she sees him shows what a good impact he was on her. Love them both. ❤ Such a sweet moment.
What a precious little girl she was, and to think Spielberg was the first person to care. Bless her. He loves her like a father.
Didn't know Steven was this kind of role model. Good to know. 💛
It's such a breath of fresh air knowing that people like Steven Spielberg exist in Hollywood ❤️ angels still exist in Hollywood guys ✨
This is hands down the most genuine Hollywood relationship I’ve ever seen. There is real love between these two.
How can anyone not utterly adore Drew Barrymore?! She is so amazingly authentic. 💖
What a gift Spielberg gave her from a young age. The gift of loving enough to help bring out the best in another. I like how he made paper doll clothes and covered the exposed parts. She took that the way it was intended. 💟
Can she be any kinder or cuter or nicer??? She is so real and down to earth and sweet at the same time 💗
“I love Whip It so much” -Steven Spielberg.
That was just so sweet. Imagine being a child actor, growing up to make your own film and the first director you ever worked with praises your film.
And not just any director: Fricking Steven Spielberg. The guy who made Schindler´s List.
and Jaws, Indiana Jones, ET, Close Encounters, Poltergeist, Jurassic Park, Minority Report. So many of my favourites.
It’s like getting praised by Michael Curtiz or Cecil B. DeMille.
Their relationship is so heart-warming.
I feel like Drew must be one of the chillest people in the world. She seems like the kind of person who has a very calming and positive presence.
I have never seen her in person, but she is one
one of JetBlue’s customers.
Drew is one of those people who I’ve watched her struggle and Ive been so proud to see her overcome obstacles in her life. Bless her and bless Spielberg for showing her what a parent figure should be. I’m so glad she had someone like that.
This really humanizes Steven. I have always loved Drew. I read her book she wrote when she was 15. Seen most of her movies. ♥️🥰
He is a monster. You people look up to child predators.
This was really tender. He seems such a nice man and I'm glad she had him to look after her. Their relationship is so special and pure.
He almost reminds of my paternal grandfather but ten years younger 😊
Can we just applaud how she is the very definition of redemption? So many efffed up young celebrities should look up to her.
This made me love Steven Spielberg even more.
My goodness! This interview was so loving and inspiring!!! I'm in tears and my heart is bursting!
Usually I'd be nauseated by such gushing. But this is so genuine and having experienced all things ET (I I lived ET having a dog that looked and acted like ET towards me for 15 years) and given the magic these two created, they can gush all they want. Real deal.❤️
Seeing this moment showed them in an organic way, not scripted, it's a real moment, that's relatable, just like everyday people. It's nice that Steven had that amazing inspiration on her. This is why we must be this for everyone that we ever come face to face with. They will remember always. Being that blessing, being a light for those and especially for our up and coming young ones. 🙏
When she said “the first person to ever care about me” oh that killed me .
