Hardly vicious, let's not exaggerate. Oprah was in her right mind to be furious that this abuse and neglect happened to this child right in front of her, with her witless mother sitting there taking no responsibility. Who wouldn't be angry to see that? If you want to see vicious watch Diane Sawyer interview a lone, teenaged Britney Spears in the early 2000s
God bless Drew Barrymore, she got through a very rough time... so happy she can enjoy her birthdays with many true heartfelt kind friends... She pays it forward with helping others, simply love her. Have a wonderful Christmas and healthy New Year!
Wow she was so smart since childhood! It was her sharp mind that helped her get back on her feet before she was doomed! I always saw her as this sunny, bubbly person, always smiling that I had no clue she has been thru all this as a child! Mad respect!!
Aisling SMITH I don't think she's directing aggressiveness to Drew; I think it's more she's annoyed that Jaid wasn't there to see what Drew was up to. Either way, Oprah isn't being mean to either of them. Before anything is recorded, she talks to everyone involved about the questions she'll be asking, etc. Nothing wrong with the way Oprah did/does her shows. ❤️ I know a lot of people mention how mean or rude she is to her guests, but I've never seen it. I've been watching her since I was a baby in the '80s. 😊
Drew was so different here. I used to watch her E True Hollywood story, so I knew she had a horrific childhood with her mother, but the contrast of herself as an adult, to a teenager is so stark. I’m glad she’s much happier and free now.

Drew seems such a sweet person. She moved me to tears when she spoke of her "father" with understanding and no bitterness at all. So sad - poor little girl! All children deserve to have two parents who love, protect and care for them. Arsenio was genuinely caring and a great interviewer. Oprah not so much and seemed to talk down to Drew and her mom as if they were beneath her. Very odd, given her own problems...
I'm from UK born in 92 I'm not sure who the male talk show host was but made me tear up it seemed like he really was rooting for her and he said it was important to have her on. He treated her with kindness, respect and dignity. I was surprised because most 80s and 90s interviews were generally quite brutal especially when you didn't see them when it was"ok" to be like that.
I'm guessing you're under the age of 40? There really wasn't any such thing as Social Services like there is today. Even so, kids in Hollywood still aren't protected
Arsenio is such a compassionate, sweet interviewer. I can tell he made her feel so much more comfortable than she otherwise would have been. I’m so impressed.
Yes, I also watched his interview with Sinead O'Connor, and he literally adjusts his voice and speaks in a gentle and calm way to make hurt and abused girls feel safe. He's really kind and extraordinary and you can feel he's very genuine!
I love how the mom acts she didn’t know that’s what was going on. You took her to the party you clearly cared more about your own social life than the safety of your child. She sent home with you you couldn’t tell she had alcohol? Come on!

It sounds more like a woman disappointed at a woman who was neglecting her child and allowing her kid to basically be taken advantage of by an industry that obviously didn’t have her best interests in mind just so she’d make money via her daughter.
And Oprah is not part of that "industry?" SMH! Come on!! Oprah does not give two 💩 's about children, well unless they're for dinner and then I'm betting she prefers white meat. 😒
yeah its a little late to play the hard judgy parent in an interview that'S about re-playing things and digging in on the roots of the problems. Comes off as a little stupid but I guess that'S what people expected from her back then. She's not like that later in her career
Oh come on. The scolding pose in one-on-one interviews is a daytime talk show standard, Phil Donahue did it before Oprah, Dr Phil does it today. The hosts know it's schtick, but their idiotic audience demands it, especially on any issue concerning children's lives.
Is hard to see if everyone at school is saying that you are not beautiful, and you feel hurt because of the absence of her father, and her mother because she was working or partying with her daughter, when she should be talking care of her
Alcoholism doesn't get passed through genes. Depression and other mental health disorders do. People become alcoholic because they try to self- medicate

You know this is the PG version of her story. To me I think the mom was Waaaay more involved and knew exactly what was going on and was complicit, I think as long as Drew was working and getting paid and she got to go to these fabulous Hollywood parties then she was ok to let these things go on. "I went my way and she went her way" is not how you talk about your verrrry underage child , that's how you speak about a grown adult friend, who let's their child roam free at a party w strangers and drugs and alcohol all over the place. It's amazing the kind of compassion that she had for her deadbeat father, even at such a young age.
Who leaves their famous 9 yr old alone at a Party or Bar. She is lucky that she only got Drunk. SMH
Who knows
ikr? irresponsible mother
i mean we don’t really know that’s the ONLY thing that happened. smh.
@@tetflaminiano1674 totally. what kind of a grown adult would make an 8 yr old girl drink 2 glasses of champagne? If doing that didn't have any ulterior motives, then thats just plainly immature. People at the parties could've gotten her drunk on purpose.
That we know of. If I were betting I would say a lot of horrible things happened. She still doesn't speak to her mother. Shes an awsome person and these experiences have made her who she is today. Strong as F-ck
Heartbreaking, but so inspiring to see how she took control of her life and turned it ALL around. I just love this girl, always have been rooting for her, and so thrilled with her successes. Drew, you've come a long way, baby!
Drew Barrymore literally lived her life backwards. What a story, what a life, what a survivor. I have always loved this woman.
Drew is afraid to say that she got an alcohol as a kid at home. It was probably laying everywhere...
Drew was so mature in these interviews at only 15. Hearing about her childhood is heartbreaking. I'm so glad that she's doing much better these days. ❤
Arsenio was so loving and genuine. Oprah, on the other hand, she seemed so judgmental and her energy was so negative.
How can you help but be judgmental & negative to a mother who admits that she lets her 9 year old go her way at adult Hollywood parties? I'd be judgmental & negative to the mother too.
Oprah definitely one to be so judgemental.
If Drew's mother was there it would be a different interview.
@@TrungNguyen-zj1rz she was judgejudgemental toward drew too. She's just got a mean style of interview. Always has. Arsenio doesn't judge because we never know until we're in that person's shoes and it's only God's job to judge. We're all sinners. We all harm others at one point or another. We all make mistakes and must grow. Its important to be merciful. Jesus said God's merciful. But we have to repent and keep trying. Drew is forgiving too. Maybe mom was suffering mental health issues. Doesn't make it OK. AT ALL and it needs intervention and consequences but there's a difference between recognizing wrong doing and thinking it's our job f poo r of us to punish and judge others. Example. My boyfriend beats me. I must recognize he's abusive and get out. Not stay around and make him understand how bad he is and try to make him fix it or shame him to others or himself. The first part is useful. The second not so much. Maybe pies charges if it doesn't put you in further danger (my opinion it does with psychopaths).... That's just my opinion though for all that!
@@youtubingbabs I agree with everything you've said, which I think are more your values than mere opinions. I was raised religiously. But I don't buy into all that horrible bullshit about original sin. I do believe in God, and I pray every day. But only because it works!
She looks like a daughter of Elvis!
Yes! I see it too
There is some resemblance.
I bet she looks like Margaret ann.
I thought so too.
@@hezelgee6012 Her Mom is a Piece of Crap. How can the Mother of a Small child not know what's going on with her small Child. Her Mother sucks
She is such a wise teenager.
I supremely agree with you! She's such a knowledgeable author! ❤❤❤❤❤
Her mam was so busy on the phone. This girl needed a hug . Beautiful little girl ,blame the parents. Look at her . All this girl needed was LOVE
I've always adored her inside and out. She is true and pure full of love.
The little Drew was very different to the teen Drew. and im glad Drew rn is the best, most inspiring person
She was a beauty then she’s a beauty now, and just an all-around beautiful soul. What a lovely woman she is. I love Drew Barrymore.
Her part in Ever After was one in a million. Highly underappreciated and wise. Lovely soul
How mature she has always been. Amazing
Arsenio is a nice man, compassionate. Thank you Drew for sharing your life...and yes Oprah seemed vicious.
How exactly does she seem vicious? Can’t you think for yourself
@@beyourself2444Their comment demonstrates them thinking for themselves. You sound just as vicious as the interviewer you unthinkingly defend.
God bless Drew Barrymore, she got through a very rough time... so happy she can enjoy her birthdays with many true heartfelt kind friends... She pays it forward with helping others, simply love her. Have a wonderful Christmas and healthy New Year!
I applaud Drew for not only owning her mistakes but working so hard to overcome her addictions and struggles to do so well in her life now.
So intelligently spoken. She was so young during this interview. I just love this gal. ✨💖✨
She was such an intelligent child! So articulate and confident! Can we also talk about how beautiful she is!
Wow she was so smart since childhood! It was her sharp mind that helped her get back on her feet before she was doomed! I always saw her as this sunny, bubbly person, always smiling that I had no clue she has been thru all this as a child! Mad respect!!
Oprah is very aggressive with this child.
I called it, mean spirited or no heart at all for Drew.
Oprah spoke volumes as to the kind of person she is 🗣. So sad....
Aisling SMITH
I don't think she's directing aggressiveness to Drew; I think it's more she's annoyed that Jaid wasn't there to see what Drew was up to. 😊
Well that would not be my child drinking at 9
@@donnafranks-oldpathhome Oprah is just showing the emotions a person should be feeling hearing this....
Oprah wants the money so she has to be the bitch, to pull those emotions out of people like a leech
Imagine giving a 9-year-old alcohol. Hollywood is still not held accountable for how child actors are treated.,
I wanted Oprah to ask her mother more hard hitting questions
Drew was so different here. I used to watch her E True Hollywood story, so I knew she had a horrific childhood with her mother, but the contrast of herself as an adult, to a teenager is so stark. I’m glad she’s much happier and free now.
This is a feedback has really healed my heart darling, I am grateful, thank you so much for your support and prayers to my career 😇 where are you watching from?
I had such a crush on Drew berrymore when I was younger. She is such a great person. She grew up to be one of the best show hosts in my opinion. Love her.
I’m sure the majority of people thought that Drew’s fame was over but she ended up proving them all wrong! You go, Drew!!! 😊💰
Wish I could tell her at this age what an icon she will become. Still my favourite actress.
Dtew will always be my favorite. Very intelligent even as a kid. She's soooo beautiful!!! Watching from the Philippines. I've watched her interviews when she was a kid and keep on watching again and again. Love you Drew❤❤❤❤❤
Yep she was rude. She didn’t even let drew finish talking.
I didn't like the way Oprah spoke to Drew... Shez a kid. Sooo soooooo rude
I mean she sounded so judgmentale. Opera I'm talking about
@@u8395
Oprah later admitted drug use .
Cocaine .
I WAS DEVOTED TO OPRAH UNTIL SHE STARTED WORSHIPING DR. DREW AND THAT ENDED IT FOR ME. SHE CAN BE VERY MEAN AND SELFRIGHTIOUS.
The Arsenio interview feels more like a therapy session.
Jonathan Watson actually I was appalled when he wanted to talk about the drugs instead of her emotions and it’s bc that’s what would sell better
did anyone else notice his air quotes and comment about demographers and his children - wtf?
@@kimlathephotography5921 oh shut up his interview was on point. Stop looking for trouble
She’s absolutely gorgeous💕
What a hard interview for such a young person
5:15 that hair whip
She smiles the most when Oprah mentions et because he was a genuine friend to her 🥺
I'm from UK born in 92 I'm not sure who the male talk show host was but made me tear up it seemed like he really was rooting for her and he said it was important to have her on. He treated her with kindness, respect and dignity. I was surprised because most 80s and 90s interviews were generally quite brutal especially when you didn't see them when it was"ok" to be like that.
He's Arsenio Hall. He was famous back then. I'm confused there was only about a minute of Oprah Winfrey on here did I miss part 1 or something?
@@pamelameadows9717 what do you mean by the Oprah? Is he still around?
Why social services didnt do anything to protect her? This woman who calls herself a "mother"just use her little baby for money?
I'm guessing you're under the age of 40? There really wasn't any such thing as Social Services like there is today. Even so, kids in Hollywood still aren't protected
Judy Garland, Charlotte Church, Tonya Harding all had mothers that didn't teach them and protect them properly.
She was emancipated at 14
$$$$$$$$$
she was emancipated
Arsenio is such a compassionate, sweet interviewer. I can tell he made her feel so much more comfortable than she otherwise would have been. I’m so impressed.
Yes, I also watched his interview with Sinead O'Connor, and he literally adjusts his voice and speaks in a gentle and calm way to make hurt and abused girls feel safe. He's really kind and extraordinary and you can feel he's very genuine!
The Welcome hug was a little too long in my opinion.
I never realized Drew's mother was Edward Scissorhands... 😎
That’s exactly what I thought !
I love how the mom acts she didn’t know that’s what was going on. You took her to the party you clearly cared more about your own social life than the safety of your child. She sent home with you you couldn’t tell she had alcohol? Come on!
What a beautiful young woman. I'm not talking about her appearance. I wish there were more people in the world with her kind of grace and graciousness.
She is beautiful anyways

She’s very honest wow. Drew has been one of my idols since I saw her in 51 st date with Adam Sandler. That’s when I learned about their connection and her story. I was like 14. That’s 10 years now. She’s very very strong to have been here at one point.
Btw I miss Arsenio Hall. Its amazing how Fallon, Colbert and Kimmell had a longer run when Arsenio Hall show was so much better
Bless her heart at least she realizes that it was not good for her and she made a change that is wonderful I think this absolutely wonderful that she brought her self attention to that and made a change good for you Drew Barrymore I think this fabulous it takes a lot to make a change that wonderful💕
I’m sorry but I feel like oprah is a terrible interview in this. It sounds like an angry police interrogation to me.
So Done lol this comment is fucked bro- read a book lol
yeah its a little late to play the hard judgy parent in an interview that'S about re-playing things and digging in on the roots of the problems. Comes off as a little stupid but I guess that'S what people expected from her back then. She's not like that later in her career
Oh come on. The scolding pose in one-on-one interviews is a daytime talk show standard, Phil Donahue did it before Oprah, Dr Phil does it today. The hosts know it's schtick, but their idiotic audience demands it, especially on any issue concerning children's lives.
i want to have that book Little Girl Lost so bad! i just love Drew Barrymore! now, i'm so happy to see her now. a very inspiring story
I love how beautifully she understands her dad's situation. She's way above her age here.
Arsenio was great at interviewing guests. Hope he's doing ok these days.
Fame and fortune never equal happiness. I've seen poor and unknown people happier.
That is so sad because I always thought she was absolutely beautiful She still is too bad she couldn’t see that
Is hard to see if everyone at school is saying that you are not beautiful, and you feel hurt because of the absence of her father, and her mother because she was working or partying with her daughter, when she should be talking care of her
Alcoholism doesn't get passed through genes. Depression and other mental health disorders do. People become alcoholic because they try to self- medicate
Madjida Akkouchi Yeah I truly believe that
So amazing the woman that Drew Barrymore has become. A cautionary tale about children in the limelight and the need for a parent to do exactly that.... parent.
The wonderful Drew had a horrible mother, and still pulled through👏🙌✨💫
She completely cut her off. That’s why. Good for her.
ARSENIO HALL WAS ONE OF THE BEST INTERVIEWERS AND TALK SHOW HOSTS OF HIS DAY,,, AMEN🙏🙏🙏!!!
HE WAS ALSO HYSTERICALLY FUNNY 🤣😝😜,.. AND VERY INTELLIGENT AND SENSITIVE!!!
I HOPE HE IS GIVEN ANOTHER TALK SHOW AND OR TELEVISION INTERVIEW SITUATION AGAIN VERY SOON🙏!!!
He's annoying and fake.
Oprah handled this interview completely wrong. I would've given Drew sympathy and Jaid professional shade for what she did to her daughter.
That's actually what she was doing. The anger was towards Drew's mother. It's very clear.
@@veganjeliza8518she also had an accusatory tone with Drew.
Drew Barrymore resembles Lisa Marie Presley back then.
Leah Travis So much resemblance.
I adore Drew Barrymore she changed her life around got clean and focused on her acting career and doing fantastic today. Thank God ! She didn't end up one of those Hollywood casualties like so many other young stars.
What? do you, mean by 🤔 that.
I think Hall made a well done professional job. Just interviewing, reporting facts, getting Barrymore comfortable. He didn't, even in the slightest way, judge. Winfrey totally did.
Winfrey judged the mom, probably because she had a tough childhood too and she was angry that the adult in the room didn't do better.
How disgusting Oprah is for questioning Drew in the way and tone that she did.
I can see the true Oprah coming through with no compassion for anyone else but herself.
Thankfully Arsenio had much more understanding compassion and delicate way of interviewing Drew..
So glad that Drew managed to overcome all the issues that she had to deal with.. Sending love hugs and positive vibes to Drew... XXXXX
It was the time of "tough love." As we all now know, tough love doesn't work.
What a beautiful soul Drew was, even then. She's grown into a magnificent human being.
Always love a Drew interview! And now, she’s the interviewee! She’s made it. But this girl made it by time she was 10.
Thank you so much for your support and good wishes, you make my evening a wonderful one already 😏🌹 ❤️ where are you watching from?
She was at Disneyland riding the Matterhorn when she was just 12. Crazy 80s. She pulled through though, whatever you think of her you have to give her props for not getting defeated... good for her.
the way her face lights up a little when oprah brings up E.T. , which drew has mentioned over the years were good memories 😢
oprah forgets how bad she felt for years.... Drew is adorable
I'm not buying it.
I can’t understand how mature she was at 15 and younger compared to how she acts on her show now!
oh poor drew love how sweet and kind hearted she is even with the traumatic experiences she went through how she picked herself up and became a better person really made me love her even more, I just have so much sympathy for her also a lot of celebrities back then like Brooke shields, Selma Blair 😢 they looked like they were doing well but when u hear their stories later on life you just get shocked and saddened with the miserable situations they been through…
heartbreaking..
Oprah knows damn well why Drew was depressed around that time..
