Indeed. They were the pioneers who have planted what can never be replicated. Just one of those things. I mean I’d play in any trio band of just one bass player, one guitarist and one drummer, but none will do justice to Rush.
They were so unbelievably professional yet never spared a charismatic stage presence. Despite being a multi-instrumentalist, Geddy never allowed stand ins or backing musicians to play his instruments and playing everything as best as he could himself. That is one of the most admirable things about Rush, you got only the three guys on stage given that they were that proficient on their instruments.
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit It's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it Those lyrics are more true today than when they were written.
Exactly. And I predict we will continue to see how prophetic they are in the US in the next 4 years as we slide from being a democracy into being an autocracy.
I saw these guys in 4 decades. 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, They absolutely were at their best on this tour. 2012 and 2015 were the best Geddy sounded since probably Signals. Great song. Absolutely goes back to their roots. Bass, guitar, drums, playing all the notes, at once, seamlessly. There will NEVER be a band this good. Anywhere.
His voice certainly isn't what it used to be but he works with it the best he can. He sings much more melodically utilizing his lower register on this tour than the last couple tours. Ged can still sing, but anything in his usual higher register he lost between the end of the Snakes & Arrows tour & Time Machine (thankfully he didn't pull a Paul Stanley and shit the bed totally). Though I think Rush and touring kept him young, he's aged quite a bit since Rush ended, still looks great for his age but seems it's catching up.
It's actually kind of amazing how well he sounded on R40 given the decades of insane touring schedules he put that voice through. They were playing on tour like 2/3 - 3/4 of a year in their earlier years. That has to take a toll. So, seriously, no complaints from me.
I don't know about you but I like the way his voice aged and how he sings now, not that It is better than when he were young, but I've come to like it much more than compared to other singers.
I was fortunate to see them twice. First, the Presto Tour and secondly, the Test For Echo tour. This song was incredible. The whole building was shaking along with everyone inside. The 2112 section of the concert was pure perfection. Nuff said.
Rush are FUCKING INCREDIBLE! Still blows me away every single time I hear their live versions. Geddy, Alex and Neil are an absolute blessing to the world of music. RIP Neil.
This has got to be one of the heaviest, kick-ass riffs ever, no matter what genre. It boots you in the head, then comes at you again, right in the guts. And to carry this off live, is freakin' amazing! Love everything about this song. RIP Neil Peart, The one and only Professor.
Hard to argue that, even in their twilight years and with Geddy's voice starting to wane, Rush stands atop the pantheon of great prog/rock bands. They will surely be missed.
This is one of the best live songs I’ve ever seen. Saw the Chicago show. I’m very sorry for the loss of Neil. I think drummers and all musicians present and long into the future will look to how he practiced his craft. Actually, I think that could be said for all three of them. There are a lot of rock musicians out there who do a great job but you can really sense the connection Geddy, Alex and Neil have to their musicianship.
Even though i've seen them about 65 times live over the decades, I will most certainly miss them! RUSH is the soundtrack of my life! So much joy all these years.
Just gotta say, R 40 might be THE best live DVD I've ever seen, not just for the music, but for the video itself! Such fantastic cinematography and direction! So many bands do the bullshit editing where its 1000 cuts per 3 seconds, and you get confused at what your seeing, but in this, the camera takes its time with each member, and you SEE what everyone is goddamn doing!
caleb washburn yes. I remember, back in 1997, read an Neil interview for a drum magazine, were he explain how much the lessons with Freddie Gruber influences his playing style. If you watch all his live performances in sequence, can note the evolution of his back position through the years.
Around two years ago I heard The Trees for the very first time. I had picked up the bass and my stepdad suggested I listen to Rush. A couple months later I finally got around to it and I cursed myself for waiting so long to finally check them out. Geddy quickly became my favorite bassist and a major inspiration going forward. They are some truly fantastic musicians
I’ll write it again…Geddy and Alex play a tribute concert in Toronto, simulcast in theaters around the world. On drums , all Neil’s worshippers come on with their own kits, pre-assembled, to play their hero’s music. What a show.
Did you know that watching our boys rock out is also a cure for a broken heart? At least it is impossible to cry whilst watching this. Impossible not to smile, actually.
Back in 1976 I bought my first Rush album,,, all the world, s a stage. Bought every album ever since. Totally locked on to the lyrics, the music, but as a drummer I just zoned in on Peart. Took me ages to master Hemispheres Camera Eye etc, Far Cry took me a while but an absolute fucking pleasure listening to learn. Rush will forever be the band. Rip the '' Professor on the drum kit''
That's the kind of adulation they dislike. Look at Peart's lyrics especially limelight. They had a peak that sadly ended at roll the bones in my opinion. But for a band that shunned the limelight all this these guys are god's is not what Rush where about but there loving it now.....shame.
Thanks for this! Snakes & Arrows is still my all-time favourite Rush album! I never get tired of rocking out to these songs! Happy 10th Anniversary to S&A (and happy 40th to AFTK!!)
In a world that's, well, a far cry from what I thought I'd inherit, this song has become something of a personal anthem for me. I'll always love this song!
Rush is so unique in terms of their music. Not another hard rock band that I can think of writes melodies and song structures like they do. They never did the expected. Always something that sounded fresh and new. I miss them. In the past at this point in time since their last release we would definitely be experiencing something new and adventurous from them. RIP Neil.
I still cant believe I was there in 2015... how fortunate was I... Life is a cycle: one day at the top, others not, and that's it. R40 was a beautiful top in my life , almost impossible to happen, but it did.
i've been holding on to Far Cry in my pocket. Since I saw them in Dallas. I've loved it for years, but it seemed like, maybe an outlier. FUCK THAT!!! It's awesome! And amongst the very best RUSH songs of all!!
Well done fellas! You got the life most musicians like myself can only dream of. Enjoy your retirement ! The song fits. It's a "Far Cry" from playing high scools back in the day to where you are now.

I can only imagine how difficult it was for Neil to play at this level with the pain that we now know he was suffering. He was a warrior - today's Tom Sawer.
If you mean glioblastoma, that was only in 2016 after the tour had ended in August the year before. But even still he was battling foot infections and tendonitis.

I would say Geddy sounded better in 96/97 . That was his best post 1981 .
People give Geddy stick due to his ageing voice, but you have to appreciate the fact it is still in rather good condition for a 62 year old
I will sign today if i am offered to get to 64 ( he will be 65 on 7/28/18) IN THAT SHAPE!

For over 40 years and countless shows Rush NEVER MAILED IT IN!! PROS!!!!!!
100%
As a fan who was with them almost their entire career, I will truly miss seeing these guys live.
That's why we buy their Live DVD's ;)
I was with them through out their time ,. 42 years. 29 concerts.
Well it is actually LIVE recorded. Enjoy ! I know it is not the intent of the comment, but .... STILL, Enjoy Sir !!! :)
There’s never been a more talented trio of musicians. More talent in these three than most 5 piece bands.
I was fortunate to see them twice. First, the Presto Tour and secondly, the Test For Echo tour. This song was incredible. The whole building was shaking along with everyone inside. The 2112 section of the concert was pure perfection. Nuff said.
This song wasn't around for the Presto or T4E tours.
Man...I miss these guys. The soundtrack of my life.
Rush are FUCKING INCREDIBLE! Still blows me away every single time I hear their live versions. Geddy, Alex and Neil are an absolute blessing to the world of music. RIP Neil.
I saw them at the first show of the R40 tour in Tulsa. His voice was awesome.
RUSH Forever and ever, It's Amazing Band, Greetings From CHILE 🇨🇱
I truly believe their music will still be around long after they're all gone. R.I.P Neil!!! You will be truly missed.

One of my fav Rush songs, especially from after the 1990s era.

I love this band! Geddy is so freaking cool. I miss Neil. It’s sad we will never see this incredible band play together again. Greatest band ever!
"Far Cry" is the best Rush song post-1980s' IMO. A perfect anthemic rocker.
Might be the best live performance I've ever seen!!
No Words Just Glory......miss them ....my emotional landscape
Magnificence unmatched.
RIP Neil. You left us too soon, but you gave us so much, along with Geddy and Alex.
Doesn't get any better than that. My all time favorite band for the last 40+ years. Rush N' Roll forever!!
That growl of geddy's bass makes me want to raise my kids in toronto
My back still remembers feeling it through half a mile of solid concrete during this tour. That's no growl, it's a freaking roar!
Hey Toronto is a great town !
Nahh. The U.S. is far better. I take that back. It’s really not especially with the aged buffoon in office
@@apieceofdirt4681 To write the U.S. is far better is moronic.
The rest of your comment makes the beginning look like genius.
Toronto is a shithole. Quebec City is easily the best city in the country
I'm really impressed with how neil totally re learned the drums and went from being a little stiff to being very graceful

This track has ROCK written all over it. Excellent album too.
Long live the best trio of all time!
Much love from a fellow Canadian 💜
I saw one of the shows on this tour and I don't think this video quite does it justice. Forty years later and they still put on an amazing show.
That grunting jazz bass is absolutely beautiful!
Rush forever!! You are amazing
Rush. There is none higher. All other bands should call them "Sire"!

Far Cry
Rush
Pariah dogs and wandering madmen
Barking at strangers and speaking in tongues
The ebb and flow of tidal fortune
Electrical changes are charging up the young
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
It's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it
You can almost feel the current flowing
You can almost see the circuits blowing
One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel
And the next it's rolling over me
I can get back on
I can get back on
Whirlwind life of faith and betrayal
Rise in anger, fall back and repeat
Slow degrees on the dark horizon
Full moon rising lays silver at your feet
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
It's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it
You can almost feel the current flowing
You can almost see the circuits blowing
One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel
And the next it's rolling over me
I can get back on
I can get back on
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
You can almost see the circle growing
You can almost feel the planets glowing
One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel
And the next it's rolling over me
I can get back on
I can get back on
One day I fly through a crack in the sky
And the next it's falling in on me
I can get back on
I can get back on
Oh, oh, oh
I can get back on
I can get back on
