Hyundai Ioniq 5 v's Genesis GV60 - Basic premium, or premium basic?

  • Not that long ago, a Hyundai was a car that represented good value for money, no frills, basic motoring. Now, however, some are priced to compete with prestige brands such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. But would you spend more on a car with a Hyundai badge than one with a BMW one? If that wasn't for you, you could consider a Genesis, the new premium manufacturer that is part of the Hyundai group. But for the same money as a basic Genesis, you could get a range-topping Hyundai, which underneath, shares many components. And as research shows, today's buyers are less bothered about the prestige of a badge, and more concerned with sustainability and environmental issues. So, does it matter? Are you better off with a range-topping Ioniq 5 Namsan Edition with all the luxury trappings, or a basic Genesis GV60 Premium for the same money? After all, how different can they actually be? Time to find out by putting them through the road test actual buyers are trusting when it comes to choosing their next electric vehicle - the AutoEV one.
AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

Great side-by-side. I've been waiting for the GV60 to become available in my state but now also interested in the upcoming Ioniq 5 N (which has a rear wiper, btw). But I'm not sure a track-focused car that weighs 5,000 pounds makes sense, however. tbd

Go back 45 years and at 100 yards, I could tell you what the make of car was if it was seen from front, side or back. And 9/10, I'd tell you the model too. Now I have to wait till the car goes past me to look at the badge and even when I've seen the badge, 9/10 if I'm driving, I'm still clueless as to what model it was.
As for the Ionic 6. It looks ugly. It's as though it came out of a jelly mould.
This Ionic 5 though, looks really nice. So different.
But these genesis EV's, whether it's the GV60 or 70, both look really smart. Very distinctive from the front with their double front lights. And the interiors of the Genesis cars looks almost sublime. They've really upped the interior quality of their cars recently.
Both the Ionic 5 and the aforementioned Genesis models are full of tech. So it'll be a difficult choice as to which to go for. But I'm erring towards the GV60. There's _"something"_ about them that sets them apart.
    Good video. Very informative.
*BIG TIP.* *_If you can't get the boot cover to cover what's inside the boot, do what I do. Buy a cheap single single elasticated mattress cover in black. Less than a tenner too. With tinted rear and back windows, as 99% of cars have, and everything covered by your black sheet, you'll not be able to see ANYTHING in there._*

My RWD Ioniq 5 doesn’t (seem to) re enable the lane keep assist once I’ve disabled it. (Long hold on the steering wheel toggle). Perhaps the software is changed in the 2023 edition?

I've got a Namsan Edition, I've had it for 4 days and I'm already used to the mirrors. I wouldn't let it worry you if you are thinking of getting one.

Both great cars, happy with eitther. Pity no wiper on either car. Seems like they need to mix the best from each of the 3 vehicles (Genesis, Hyundia and Kia)

Does this version of the Genesis have a HUD and the interior plug (V2L) like the Ioniq? Not sure if you mentioned it. Sorry if you did.

Thought it was a 3 metre wheelbase not 5 metre? If it was 5 metres it would make the car about 6 metres long.

The Ionic 5 is a beautiful car in every way, but having sat in one for about an hour. 2 observations, Too Merc like, too Large for us.
Never seen a Genesis here in South Australia, but looks like its tailored to the US market.
We will wait for the Kona 2024 EV.

Given the thesis of the video it’s worth considering those big Hyundai badges on the nose and tail. A Mercedes has those to confer the status of the brand onto the vehicle. I think Hyundai have done the opposite. That design is so self-evidently great they want the brand to get the credit. (Inside, where it’s just you, there’s no badging at all. No reminder of your car’s humble heritage.) Hyundai are using design to change brand perceptions and they’re doing it insanely well. The Genesis is a lovely car but I’m not sure it’s going to find it’s own space when it’s junior siblings are knocking it out of the park. It’s a big bet on the snob market.

The Genesis reeks of old man American car interior, matched to a bland jelly mould blob exterior, the Ioniq just looks so much more modern both inside and outside. Ioniq every time for me.

Tricky question - Hyundai or Genesis? I would not spend this money for one of this, simply the image of Hyundai is affordable and reasonable quality. Just because they initiated a new brand - Genesis, I would not pay more, as it is the same as the mother company. Ok, more luxurious interior and a different shape, makes the brand going bold on price. I would have taken the decision to bring the brand Hyundai image-wise up. Well, time will tell…

First of all, thank you for watching and taking the time to let us know your thoughts.
Very interesting viewpoint. Like I said, does it question the need for a new brand with a premium leaning? It’s really interesting that you see them at the same level. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
