Porsche 911 Carrera T: Why It's the Driver's 911 | Edmunds

  • Edmunds Editor-in-Chief Alistair Weaver steps into the wayback machine to get behind the wheel of a 1970s air-cooled 911T. Today's 911 Carrera T seeks to meld the spirit of those early 911s with modern-day sophistication. Find out why Alistair calls the 2019 Porsche 911 Carrera T the "best all-around 911 on sale today."
    Q: What kind of engine and transmission does the 2019 Porsche 911 Carrera T have?
    A: The Carrera T uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with 370 horsepower. Our test car had the seven-speed PDK automatic transmission, but a seven-speed manual is available on the Carrera T.
    Q: How is the 2019 Porsche 911 Carrera T different from a base 911?
    A: The Carrera T uses 20-inch wheels from the Carrera S and the 911's optional sport-tuned suspension, and it sits 0.4 inch lower than a regular 911. It features a sport exhaust and gets a torque-vectoring rear differential. Our test car had the available rear-axle steering ($2,090), which improves straight-line stability and turning agility.
    Q: What's the 2019 Porsche 911 Carrera T's 0-60 mph time?
    A: Porsche says the Carrera T will cover 0-60 in 4.0 seconds, but it did the deed in 3.6 seconds on the Edmunds test track.
    Q: What does the T stand for?
    A: You might think "turbocharged,'' but you'd be wrong. The T stands for "Touring," which Porsche says was inspired by the 1968 911T.
    Q: How much does the 2019 Porsche 911 Carrera T cost?
    A: The base price is $103,150, including destination. Our test car had options including the carbon-fiber seats ($5,200) that added considerably to the bottom line.

    This is such a perfect review. Contains some old 911, new 911, a great analogy (pizza), and a preference for a nice watch. I'd seen a few of this channels reviews before but now I'm subscribed! Thank you and looking forward to more great reviews by Mr. Weaver.

      Why would you say that? Go to my channel and watch my own videos of me driving my new 911 T. Go to my Facebook page and watch the video of the Porsche Salesman delivering the new 911 T to me at the dealership. Plenty of pics and videos. I have no reason to lie. So once again, why would you say something like that? On what evidence or basis?

    They presenter was natural in his delivery, there was enough info, with some subjective stuff and pacing was excellent. Great work. I don't need the visual trickery, but keep the newfound groove!

    There is no point of a PDK Carrera T... or reviewing one... you're missing two important changes to a normal 911, the shorter geared LSD and short throw manual transmission.

    • @VK6AB-
      @VK6AB- 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean it has shorter gearing than the base model and all other 991.2 series 2 911s e.g. S and GTS have shorter gearing than the base and either a mechanical locking diff or electronically controlled locking diff. Its an end of run special.

    I’m a fan of Carlos too but I thought this was a fine review by Alistair. I’m guessing a MT model was just not available for the review. Because they were all sold out no doubt. These things happen. But despite that, this review got the point across. Well done.

    The rear wheel steer option is the reason to get the T, since this option is not available on the base 911.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      93455Driver is it that much of a must have? And you can get it on the S which isn’t too much more than a well optioned T.

    • @93455Driver
      @93455Driver 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alan Bowers The reviews of the rear steer system have been very positive, it is a draw for the T. Otherwise I would be happy enough with a base (if ever I could afford one).

    Reading comments below, I bet Carlos Lago didn’t realize so many men were sweet on him.
    There are reasons to get the PDK, and reasons to get the manual. The manual is funner (most of the time), but the PDK makes the car much quicker and better in traffic. Get whichever one you like...who cares what snobs think.

    I have to disagree with your conclusion - GTS is a far better buy and a far better performer too. The T feels like an underpowered S and isn't as well braked. It handles well because it has SPASM which is available on the S and GTS and both have these, PTV plus and access to PDCC. The T is still a very good 911 but the S and GTS just offer that bit more and lot more in GTS form.

    Of course you guys never mentioned that you lose the torque vectoring limited slip differential with your as tested spec PDK car. Only manual cars get the LSD. Seriously, please do your research when you test cars otherwise you just end up sounding like advertisement like this reviewer. Edmunds you used to be so good. Carlos probably would have known this.

    Put it in “naughty mode”
    Seen the T on the road yesterday, same color, and thought to see a review. In person the car is small as I pass it in my F150- and the guy driving his CT was not showing off after I tried to engage him to get on the gas. But a twin turbo 3.0 Porsche engine looses my interest because a NA engine is the only way for a $100,000 car. I think I will talk out my ass and say the “T” stands for “tame” and hopefully Porsche won’t become like BMW and put a 2.0 turbo in every fucking car.

      Did you test limit handling/behavior

    • @sapientbudgie5652
      @sapientbudgie5652 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the limit, I would say the 911 was the best, but a surprising floppy feeling over larger bumps that was unsettling. The M3 felt by far the stiffest and very direct steering and back end comes out even when you don't want it to mid corner. RS5 had a surprising amount of rear bias and felt very stable. Seats, cabin and seating position was the best in the RS5. I kept it in auto for many settings as in dynamic the suspension was too harsh for me for daily driving. RS5 felt like a larger 911 and the best balance of all of them and for me felt the fastest.

    • @amarrao95
      @amarrao95 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice. I almost bought an S5 Premium Prestige (or something, can't remember the exact trim) 3.0TT6MT a couple of years back.
      Better engine note - and way better looking - than the 435i, in my judgement.
      Now trying to decide between a Giulia QV, GT350, and SS 6MT...
