      I really want one! I like how its a Cup focused/inspired car. I am stuck between a 911 T, Cayman GTS, or Targa 4s.. Coming from a C43 AMG I think I will enjoy the power of the T.. Plus it just looks soo classy!

    Wholeheartedly enjoyed that „review“ of your T, including critics, swearing, putting into perspective, etc.
    Between „making use of too many remaining body shells, spiced with some retro marketing“ and „if you refrain from putting back all the rubbish you don’t need for a little fun car you get something special“, there is something appealing in this little fellow.
    More agreeable even was I with your assessment of the distribution practice of Porsche (and btw others in that Segment), where clients almost „apply“ for a car instead of just walk-in in and buy one. I realized this first, when I informed my dealer that I wanted an R and all I received back was a furious grin. Little later, the GT4 was announced, and I was „promised“ one, because of my buying history with Porsche. Didn’t like the procedure, but love the car. Also, because it got me into the privileged situation to be „allowed“ to buy a GT3 (Touring), which then closed the viscous circle to the R, which was what I really wanted, in the first place. Although happy with the result, I deeply dislike the whole circus around who gets what. So: well done raising this and relating it to real life situations like yourselves (and it can’t be said that you don’t have enough precious automobiles in your garage...)

    This car is amazing! I mean, so what if it has the base motor, it has PASM, it has a mechanical LSD, it has a re-geared transmission, the short throw from a GT3, rear axel steering and if you don’t spec it with silly stuff like a sunroof, its lighter and has some stuff even the S doesn’t have. Especially for $115k. The quick enough comments are absolutely silly. It is a Porsche 911. I think people that have access to too many cars are cynical, most people won’t have the opportunity to drive a car like this and when they do, it’s amazing!

    On AutoTrader there are 32ish Carrera Ts for sale, and about 53 base Carrera coupe for sale......HOWEVER, out of the 53 base Carrera (over the whole of 991/991.2) there are less then 10, yes 10 of the 991.2.
    The rare collectable car to have could well be the base Carrera.

      Interesting point. I remember with the 993 generation, the bog standard Carrera was the one to have as it offered the more pure driving experience

  • @anthonyrondolino8148
    @anthonyrondolino8148 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Almost all reviewers comment very favorably on how great the driving experience is with the “T” and this is based on the perfect base motor with three options not available on the models. The manual transmission is special and praised in many reviews. The LSD is different and may add something to this mix. Finally, the lack lightweight windows allows more engine sounds into the passenger compartment. Any comments (and there are some) that suggest the purported weight savings has any effect lack credibility. However, if we accept the proposition that Porsche has come up with some things that actually do improve the driving experience what can we make of their decision to exclude these as options? Buyers can get leather wrapped ac vents, paint to sample and tinted tail lights but can’t spec things that actually make the car a better driver? The rear spoiler actually rises to a higher angle than other models. Is this better? If so why would it only be on the Carrera T?

    I have only recently seen a 991.2 T in the tin and it’s a a stunning looking car, with the new 992 coming out shortly the T’s should be quite desirable and will only be a short production run time. I like your review of the car as it is the driving experience that counts, I know that the GT3, GT3 RS & Touring are more sought after but track focused cars can be to harsh on the road and I would be quite happy with a T.

    You can't option the Porsche Torque Vectoring to the base Carrera, so the T is the only way to get it in a non-S. Spec in the sport exhaust, and shorter throw manual.

  • @smilepermile888
    @smilepermile888 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Great video. I haven’t driven the car so take this *RIDICULOUSLY* long comment with a pinch of salt!
    I understand the appeal of having more horsepower but in a country with many narrow & twisty roads, I will respectfully disagree by saying that I’m glad that Porsche didn’t use the Carrera S’s 420hp engine. Nick Murray said in his video that the ‘base’ Carrera’s 370hp engine arguably has the _most naturally aspirated ‘feel’_ amongst the 3.0 twin turbo engines in the 991.2 Carrera range. He says the 420hp engine feels more elastic+laggy. Also, having less power allows the driver to approach the car near its 10/10ths on public roads, like you can thrash modest powered RWD cars like Mazda MX-5 and Subaru BRZ etc. th-cam.com/video/NYwJJ68BvPM/w-d-xo.html
    I agree however that the Carrera T has a significantly high price hike despite its so-called ‘lightweight’ credentials. But if you really like driving but cannot afford a flipped GT3 (or other GT badged 911s) in the used market after not receiving an allocation from Porsche, then the Carrera T is the best 911 in the range in my opinion. It separates itself from the base Carrera with its PASM fitted standard + the rear differential as you said, reduced wheel gap with its lower ride aesthetic, gearbox having shorter gear ratios+shorter throws and the option to select the 918 style bucket seats (although the seats you have are more comfy).
    I’d like to see how a Carrera T compares with a Cayman GT4 - the latter is lighter, has a better gearbox and it will definitely annihilate the former on a track with its GT3 derived front suspension and its midengined characteristics. However, with very similar power outputs and relatively similar prices on the used market, it would be interesting to see someone comparing both of these cars on public roads to see which one is more 'fun to drive'.
    I agree, Porsche really should sort out their allocation system - JayEmm on Cars did an interesting video on it th-cam.com/video/RJ739X8SSCk/w-d-xo.html
    I’m aware that UK delivered GT3 Tourings are going for over 200 grand in the used market, but would you consider getting one with its wingless look+9000rpm engine?

    • @TheCarGuysTV
      @TheCarGuysTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Helluva comment, Smilepermile. Very interesting point on the base Carrera engine vs the S - I have to admit the base DOES feel more like a naturally aspirated engine, and I remarked on that in the collection video. We'll have to see if we can rustle up a Cayman GT4 for a comparison vid. I would definitely consider a Touring GT3 - they look fantastic!

      +TheCarGuys.TV Thank you so much for reading my really long comment and replying quickly! That Carrera T and Cayman GT4 'street' comparison would be awesome to see, since no one on TH-cam has done it yet! +Fluterra Interesting. Perhaps its because the T has near identical torque figure as the 991.2 GT3, but at an earlier RPM

    • @nickeckemoff7631
      @nickeckemoff7631 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Right I'm calling BS on that. That's just a way to justify why getting a base car is better.
      Being an S owner, I don't think there is much of a difference. It doesn't feel any more turbo like than the base. The only difference is it gets more boost at the top end. They are both twin turbo engines and act like it. Much quicker than NA and do sound slightly worse. Buying a base car thinking you're getting an NA engine just because it has less top end boost is ridiculous. People are paying more money for T models with less power and features and instead of getting an S or GTS...nice marketing campaign Porsche. If you want light weight and more engagement, get a stripped out base model...the T is kinda like a GTS is to an S, a package bundle of the base car to clear the parts bin prior to the next generation release.
      Once you get used to the S power, you're wanting more not less. A base/ T model with MT will be slow IMO, but some rather have fun with an extra pedal on the floor. I'd rather go fast in traffic with less stress and use 2 pedals on a steering wheel. A manual Miata is a light weight car that's more driver focused if I wanted that kinda thing.

      +1 for the OP. The power (torque) chase is improving bragging statistics but reducing street enjoyment for me. I like running a car through its gears. Hard to even run through second these days without being a jerk. As Magnus Walker and Jay Leno said, “(It’s more fun to be able to) use all the power all the time.”

    My experience with the 911T 3 years on - First of all, this car is my 4th 911 ranging from a 1984 911 Carrera Whale Tail manual (which I should have never sold) to a 2015 Carrera S with the early automatic transmission ( not a fan) and a 2017 911 S with PDK, (great car but ruined, in my opinion by the automatic transmission) Let me explain - I'm not a track driver, never have, never will be. While I understand the advantage the PDK has over the manual transmission clearly has on the track, it takes the "drivers experience and involvement" out of the car! To me it's like buying an aerobatic airplane with an autopilot and then letting the autopilot fly all the aerobatic maneuvers. It quickly just becomes another nice automatic car - turn the radio up and let it lead you around - boring! Now to my 2019 Carrera T - I was fortunate enough to get a new allocation and spec the car out to my personal specs. My car is not lighter - I added rear-wheel steering, a sun roof and the Brumaster sound system and selected the manual 7 speed transmission. This car is hands down the closest in driving experience and overall enjoyment to my 1984 Carrera Whale tail than any of the others. In my opinion my 911 T delivers exactly what it was meant to deliver - a great driver involved, road car driving experience like no other that the early on-Porsche reputation was originally built upon! This car is capable of breaking any speed limit in the country in 3rd gear - you really don't need 400+ horsepower on the street or spend $300k+ to have an enjoyable driving experience! One thing that I believe these types of reviews completely miss when comparing this 911 to is higher performing models. I originally planned to drive this car a short time with the intention of ordering a 911 GT3 Touring, but I honestly have to say, after driving my Carrera T for 3 years and considering the differences in horsepower (which I don't need), a different gearbox and price, my badge envy has waned considerably! I'm happy to keep my 911 T and in addition look for an older 911 model to restore.

    Enjoyed your video.
    Haven driven the Carrera T with the PDK this past weekend, and having driven the range of the 991.2 variants with manual (base and GTS), I will say that the Carrera T is a surprisingly QUICK car. I don't love "bench racing" but Car & Driver pulled a 3.4 second run from 0-60 mph in the 2017 991.2 BASE carrera with PDK and sport chrono. So the T should do *3.3 seconds to 60 mph* with launch control. We all know how ridiculously conservative Porsche is with their performance estimates. That will destroy pretty much any Jaguar and even keep pace some Ferraris, if you're talking about acceleration runs.
    I do kind of agree that it's their end-of-run 991.2 "parts bin special" but by removing sound deadening, tooling with the gearbox ratios (for manual), adding LSD, and changing some of the cosmetic bits, they are giving you a heck of a lot more value than the previous gen "Black Editions" did. And the car does sound louder and more raw than the "normal" 991.2 and the GTS for that matter, at least to my ears.
    I am a manual driver through and through. I own a 991.1 C4S with manual and wouldn't give it up for the new models, but the Carrera T with PDK and sport chrono is a sleeper MISSLE. The T is incredibly satisfying as a DRIVER's car and really makes you re-evaluate chasing all these huge gaudy HP/TQ numbers. It really surprised me.

      @TheCarGuysTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your well-made comments, William. I agree on the black editions and the benefits of the manual option. The T is most definitely a great drivers car, though I’m not sure we can get it down to 3.4s for a 0-60

    A refreshingly great and informative video. I acknowledge they are different cars and speed is not everything, but does the performance of the T (acceleration) prove a step up from say a BMW M2? I am thinking of trading my M2 in for a T, however I am yet to drive one as there are none in my area. Also, is there much difference between this and a Carrera S?

    • @TheCarGuysTV
      @TheCarGuysTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good questions, Darren. Although on paper the two offer similar performance, I would suggest the T is in the real world quicker (esp if you opt for pdk), and the T’s slippery shape will help improve its official figures even further. If you drive back to back I’d bet the T will impress you more. The S is overall faster, but has different handling characteristics and is more refined than the T

    Nice vídeo! Mine is exactly like yours on the exterior! Great info too. I wonder if Porsche are not being modest about the weight reduction on that one. At least it’s capabilities! Well, here where I live, we can spec the car without rear seats, air con and put on race carbon seats and ceramic brakes. Those options if you’re really serious about weight reduction, along the ones Porsche already consider, like the thinner rear window and other bits, will most certainly improve that aspect. By the way, the rear wheel steering is not available for the basic Carrera. About the performance, if you choose the manual, you’re more interested in “driving interaction” ( oh, I’m getting so sick about that trend...want manual? Get a classic sport car! ). If you really want to go fast, chose a PDK. Real life, 0 to 60mph in less than 3.8sec. with launch control. Want more juice? Litchfield would safely tune your Carrera T to over 500hp. Oh, I believe the last manual transmission mid engine Ferrari was the F430. I bet my Carrera T would be fairly faster than that! 😉

    The Carrera T is a bit of an odd one and I think you hit the nail n the head with is being a parts bin end of line model with the 992 inbound. It also seams very spec dependant, from my understanding and correct me if i'm wrong.....a PDK box does not get the LSD, Sun protection glass gives you standard non light weight glass, however you see so many PDK equipped Carrera T's with sun protection glass, rear seats and a sunroof which is missing the point IMO. It has less sound proofing?, shorter shift and the Carrera S ratios on the manual box and the option of rear wheel steering + Pccb's and the 918 bucket seats which the base Carrera cannot be optioned with. Standard sports exhaust etc. IMO the ideal spec would be, rear steering, 918 buckets, all clear lightweight glass, possibly PCCB's and no sunroof or rear seats, only downside is then it's gets expensive over 100k expensive, hmmmm. Great video as always Guys.

    • @smilepermile888
      @smilepermile888 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. Anishvin on youtube did his Carrera T collection video and specced his with sunroof + PDK because he wanted to use his car as a city runaround - which is exactly not the purpose of the Carrera T lol

    • @TheCarGuysTV
      @TheCarGuysTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Adam - great points as always. We've specced manual (tick), steel brakes (jury's out), privacy rear glass (cross), LSD (tick), rear wheel steering (tick), normal seats (cross), no sunroof (tick). Heated seats (cross), cruise control (cross). So not a bad spec at all, and more in keeping with the spirit of the car than most

    • @bishy33
      @bishy33 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I appreciate your reply thank you, PDK and a sunroof seams to be the biggest mistake on the T, may as well buy a base Carrera and save some money but a lot of them I would say are flipper spec, add in a few options to make it more desirable I assume, over 30 for sale on Autotrader!. anyway I look forward to seeing more video's from you guys as I enjoy your interaction with each other which is refreshing compared to some youtubers who just seam to churn out endless drivel.

    8:02 you have said that you need power, the thing about this car is to be less power to allow you to enjoy the car! although too much power you might face turbo lag .. which exists in every single 911 across the line the only car who does not have turbo lag is the Basic 911. I would like to add more about the power that whoever wants to buy the Carrara T is someone who clearly understands Porsche. in the end, I prefer the basic Carrara and the T to the other models in the line.

      @@Nord_Mann I guess it's worth a test drive but one limitation of the 911s is that the engines are too small to get adequate displacement without turbocharging. I am still enjoying the 2RS but was offered an allocation for a Speedster but probably not going to get one. That manual roof deployment is somewhat disappointing.

    Porsche takes a 991.2, widely regarded as one of the best 911s, makes it lighter and more engaging, and then some clowns in a bid to get clicks ask “is it a real 911?” In what possible realm would it not be? Click bait title is clickbait

    • @TheCarGuysTV

    Most of the comments in this video do not make any sense. "The brakes are not bad". Really? So are they just 'average'? I don't think so. "It's not that fast a car'. Yes, it is a very fast car. How much more speed do you need for public driving and going to the supermarket? Seriously? "It's enough to keep up with modern traffic". What does that even mean? All new cars today can easily keep up with modern traffic. That comment belongs to a 1968 Fiat not a 2018 Porsche. You were overly critical about the wrong things in your review. What you should have focused on is what this car does not need. The Carrera T should not have the silly dial on the steering wheel to pick your 'driving mode' (I really hate that nonsense). It does not need all of those stupid buttons on the center console. It does not need the goofy big screen in the center of the dash. It does not need to 'automatically' downshift for you. It should just be a manual gearbox, and you the driver should do all of the work with no electronic distractions. Period. That is what the 'T' should be about.
