Porsche's Biggest Mistake? Why The 2018 911 Carrera T Failed To Sell

  • Towards the end of the 991's reign, Porsche introduced a new variant that should have been a hit - the 911 T. Based on the entry level Carrera, the car was designed to appeal to driving enthusiasts by giving higher performance through lighter weight, rather than more power. In essence, a half-way house to a GT3 at a much more affordable price point.
Things did not go well though, with many sitting in dealerships unsold as soon as they were delivered. Now, five years since its release and many consider it to be one of the best modern 911s - so what do I think?

I own a 2018 T with ceramics, spider seats, manual, Gt Silver, rear seats. The driving position and response you get on normal roads is unbeatable. It has a narrower classic look, doesn’t say ‘look at me’ with a whopping wing on the back, and handles superbly. When I’m on long journeys i can get 34+ MPG in 7. Owned a T for 2 years now. One observation I've had is the throttle response is much quicker *and* more linear in Sport Plus than either Normal or Sport. It really only feels normally aspirated-like in that mode. Sport mode, the throttle is really touchy(I think it's in an effort to make people feel it's extra "sporty") and normal the turbos just take a good while to spool up. Sport Plus is shockingly close to an NA car. Randy Pobst said he couldn't even really tell it was turbocharged on track.

I do agree that the options list should have been limited, but not in the manner you speak. IMO A/C and radio should only be excluded on track editions (I live in the Southeast region of the US) and back seats should remain optional for any 911. For the 911T, gear box, color, 1 of 2 types of seat, and ceramic brakes are the only options that should have been available. Cut all of the customization options like belt and dial colors, keep the seats in cloth with either fixed back or manual adjustments, make the sport Chrono pack standard along with the lowered stance, and keep the more aggressive suspension. That would've been superb for this application.

I felt exactly like this and didn’t get one. It’s probably a mistake (that I didn’t get one) but I felt it was too expensive per spec, had the small engine, and could get much better specked plain Carreras with more toys (full leather etc for less). I also felt the dynamic benefits of the T would never be manifested in normal roads for 99.9% of owners’ abilities including my own, especially as no owner would have the benefit of back to back comparison. Thus I have since done 10k miles on a plain Carrera, and my life avg speed is 11mph…

If my S hadn’t come back and the dealer had said “would you like to keep the T?”.. I would have said yes.. I never noticed much turbo lag in my S, but I did after having had the T. The T model vs base 991.2 had a lot off extras, that added weight (e.g. mechanical LSD for manual car, Sports exhaust, bigger 20 inch wheels vs 19 on base model), thus the actual weight savings were more than just those 20 kgs for equally equipped cars and as well the price difference was rather small if you would put all those extras on base 991.2. Another major difference is also short shift kit that you got on T and could not get from factory on 991.2 which makes the shifting in the 7sp manual quite nice (at least I enjoyed it and do not see any reason why would you need 6sp gearbox). If you go to Europe at least one or twice a year for long trip, the 7sp gearbox allows to achieve super low fuel consumption numbers (my friend goes to trips and gets around 8l per 100km on those trips, including fast driving on autobahns) which makes it great car for long rides as well great daily car (unless you sit all the time in traffic).
Also, I do not see any reason in wanting to not allow to opt your base or T model as you wish - this is the route Porsche is going in 992 generation any many hate it as it forces you to by S model in many cases 😢

T owner since spec'ing and taking delivery in Dec '18. Love it. I appreciate the review and agree with the overall assessment of the car.
There are a few errors though: this really is the direct descendant of the 968 CS. The similarities in them are just too many to ignore. And the 968 was not as widely accepted initially as portrayed, the old forums are rife with people hating it initially and saying pretty much the same derogs here. It was funny to find during research. The options on the car WERE limited, honestly, and the argument about over spec'ing while valid doesn't really hold. Those cars aren't the ones holding their value, nor are they sought. You didn't have to spec the T interior, but it really sets the car off. The PDK cars, spec'd by the dealers and weighed down with options, are the ones that sat at dealers. And still are...
I'm not objective, but I really do believe there is a lot more to this car than confirmed by Porsche in the press, and that it will continue to be loved now. Just as the 968 CS has become highly prized. Keeping mine for the foreseeable future. Thanks for keeping the hype alive, Jay. Appreciate it. SS

Here in Brazil the Carrera T was a great success! It got very interesting options not available for the base Carrera model. And, at least here it’s not that stripped out of creature conforts like air con or rear seats. Besides that, some drivers that use their cars on Porsche Track Days, with a basic tune (like you said) and Cup tires, incredibly split the ranks of track dedicated Porsche GT3 in a manner that even the 718 GT4 or the 992 Carrera S can’t do so far. You’re right when you said that Porsches’s message maybe ‘got a bit confusing at some point, but if you did your homework and specced your car like you really wanted…it’s love at first drive!

To me the previous Carrera T recipe is actually a good one. But Porsche didn't price it correctly. If it were, say, £3500 less than a Carrera, it would have been a great deal. I don't mind cloth seats (in fact I do like them) but an extra £2000 for cloth seat centres and some stitching is a bit much.

You hardly use the 7th gear during regular driving or on the track, so I don't see the point of the 7 speed manual over the 6. Then again, most buyers would probably prefer the PDK over the manual. And like the reviewer said, this should have gotten the new 4.0 engine but it wasn't I production at the same time as the Carrera T.

The T is more than just a base Carrera with a sticker. 1st off, the rear spoiler retracts higher than a GTS and its directly taken from the GT3 touring.
On the chassis, its equipped with PASM sport suspension as standard which its 10mm lower than a Carrera S with standard PASM and 20mm lower than those with steel spring.
With that being said, it has a tougher anti roll bar and ride better. Therefore, it can attack curves confidently while not being too overpowered.
Lastly, the engine mount for T is 2inches forward than the standard models. There are actually more than just a sticker that T offers.
If u added in RWS, it will be curve attacking weapons. Might be better than a GTS.

Well carrera T didnt fail at all. Its not just another base model with "touring" marketing terms. It has more than just a wording revision. Its engine is 2 inches forward than base Carrera including GTS. Has rear spoiler thats directly taken from GT3 touring which raised higher than any of the carrera models. PASM sport suspension as standard which is optional even in Carrera S and GTS model. With SPASM as standard which means stiffer anti roll and 20mm lower with front spoiler lips. All of these which are cost option and some arent acessible with base carrera model. So T is unique as its own.

You can’t simply put a badge on a car without adding more power and performance then expect people to pay for it. Fewer features that no one wants on resale makes no sense. This particular car is nice only because it’s well optioned. There is nothing about this that makes it preferable to the S given the price. Like many 911 models the initial hype is a function of the belief that it will quickly become a classic and go up in price. Unfortunately Porsche has fallen victim to speculators and you can’t simply buy any 911 that Porsche sells unless you are somebody.

The usability of 911s make us drive them when, perhaps, lesser fare would be equally suitable (boring motorway runs etc). My old 40AE does 32-34 on a motorway. It’s a six speed - not particularly over geared either. It’s to do with weight. Progress?

Nice car. Sidenote but let it be said: The "factory performance weight savings" of more or less any modern car, and certainly Porsche, are a joke. As a percentage, its just too small of a difference to make any real world difference of note, and would be hardly noticable by a professional race driver on a back to back controlled test with the standard version on a race track....
Best of all are the Porsche fabric door handles and sticker instead of hood emblem. Not even the best driver in the world could tell the small fractions of a pound those things make as a difference. As a sort of a "racing homage" it makes sense and can be seen as kind of cool, but as anything tangiable, not.
But maybe its the reviewers we should blame, that do imply they indeed are "weight savings" of any note instead of the appearance option purpose they fill. Not directed at Mr Jayemm specifically of course, he has taken a reasonable enough stance.

The real basic Porsche sport car is now the Cayman GT4.
The 911 is more into Luxury GT except for the GT2 and GT3 naturally, that are incredible beasts and everything but basics!
I was a Porscher, and if I decided to own a car again or some (I don't actually), I would be overwhelmed by all the options offered by Porsche now, from Cayman GTS to 911 GT3, and would probably end up with a 911 Touring as a compromise. An awesome compromise.

Even remapping my turbo charged hatchback. The extra 20% or so bhp makes a massive difference. So why would anyone want the lower powered Porsche.

The T cars are odd with the lowest power engine in the line and the S chassis. I was looking for one in a 991.2 but decided the regular Carrera was a better car for me. The other bundling model in the Porsche lineup is the GTS which is a bargain with the top engine and all the goodies bundled in for a better price than an S with options added.
