  • BEST Dive Watch Under $3000?! The Doxa Sub 300T. How has it taken me this long to get a Doxa in for review?! I've always had a soft spot for Doxa. I love their tool watch charm and how committed they are to making a functional diver! Great heritage, great design! Here is my thoughts on the Doxa Sub 300T - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly!

I have the 300t (Caribbean blue, blue rubber strap) and it's by far my most worn watch. I love it. First discovered it due to Doxa association with Jacques Cousteau, I watched every episode of The Undersea World when I was a kid, so had to have one. He exclusively distributed the 300 through his company US Divers and he and his team wore them on many of their adventures. Doxa's next dive watch was the Conquistador with it's HEV, which the 300t is based on.

Yeah, I too was hooked on Jacques Cousteau when I was a kid (we must be similar vintage) so one day I will pull the trigger on a Doxa. Just not sure which one.

@@DaveMGmovies I remember avidly reading one of my Dads books about Jacques Cousteaus treasure hunting adventures when I was a kid, and a few years later my Dad introduced me to the Clive Cussler books about 'Dirk Pitt' with his orange Doxa dive watch. It had always since then been a plan to own one, but I honestly didn't think that I'd ever prioritise THAT much money in the direction of a watch. A couple of years ago I was bitten by the 'watch bug', and suddenly came to the realisation that £1800 isn't actually that much money when it comes to watches (At the time, I'd just quit heroin, and bought myself a £200 Accurist as a reward thinking that it was an expensive watch! LOL). Now got 3 Doxas in my collection, and about 17 other watches or various makes, but my Doxas are in my top fave ones.

I’ve owned a Caribbean 300T for a few years now and have found it the most comfortable watch in my small collection. No sharp edges to dig in and, on the beads of rice bracelet, extremely well balanced on the wrist. Although the clasp may not be the best, the dive extension does offer rudimentary on the fly adjustment. Although I’m not a diver, I do sail an old yacht, with no power winches etc, that needs constant maintenance, so the watch does take a real beating, which it has stood up to remarkably well. Overall, I’ve been very happy with it.

I can say from personal experience, the Doxa Sub series of watches are tough and reliable. I have a 600t professional Clive Cussler limited edition and 750T Caribbean. Both have been on many dives and are over 20 years old. Still look and perform as new.

When I first saw a Doxa, I was smitten. I purchased the Sharkhunter 750T reissue after my first tour in Afghanistan and I then picked up the Professional 300T after my 2nd tour. I loved the late 1960's early 1970 aesthetic of these watches. I wore them often, and never babied them. True tool watches. I sold both with most of my collection a couple of years ago to make room for some other watches I was lusting after.

I decided against the orange dial, as i thought it was a bit too loud and weird.

My experience is that the "beads of rice" bracelet allows your skin to dry more quickly underneath. All of those gaps between the beads seem to help in this by allowing more air in. It also weighs a ton, almost 1/4 lb. in total with the watch, so alternate arms so you don't overdevelop your left bicep. Lol. I love my Doxas, and I think your review is spot-on. --Old Guy

Very nice review and I had to put mine on to watch. The clasp is ok-not much worse than the current Omega Seamaster. But I think it’s biggest flaw is lume. It doesn’t last very long. Surprisingly weak for a diving spec monster. Otherwise it’s damn near perfect for what it is.

I've owned one of these for a couple of years, it was my first 'REAL' (Mechanical) watch. I find that the bracelet is very comfortable, and the watch is generally accurate to within acceptable limits for me (+4-5 sec per day). Only downsides are it's fairly thick and heavy, which means it does tend to get bashed quite a bit IF I wear it at work, which means that frequently I end up wearing my Seagull 1963 instead as my daily wear watch. Love Doxa, also own a Sub 200 and a Sub 200C-Graph.

And it still works too (on and off anyway) despite never being serviced as far as I know. Still, it really needs one, has done for years. But that’s pricey and I’d have to send it back to Switzerland (I live literally thousands of miles away from there) and just not within my budget unfortunately.

The Doxa 300t and 300 have been on my wish list for a long time. After all, who wouldn’t want to own the watch designed and used by the late great Jacque Cousteau? However, being the cheap skate that I am, I’ve circumvented the the high price of one of these legendary timepieces and bought a Seestern 300t for less than $200.00. It’s actually quite a nice diver with a reliable Seiko movement under the hood. If you get a chance, try out the Sub 300 (non-T). It's a more slender and vintage-y version of the 300T. Thinner case, thinner bracelet, thinner clasp.

I do use my dive watches as a dive computer backup. Living on the Mediterranean coast for half the year, it's almost against the law not to scuba dive. I owned the Doxa for a short time only. Though it has many positives, it has one truly fatal flaw for a diver. The lume is absolutely woeful and literally that minute hand actually disappears in minutes. I could never understand why Doxa got that wrong and still haven't fixed it. This is probably why the Seiko Prospex divers are far preferred by professional divers. As far as the navy stuff is concerned that's just marketing. A friend of mine is an ex German navy diver and is in our club and he thinks the Doxa as an emergency backup is completely useless. Maybe he'll comment later after I share this video with him! 😊

I think Doxa offers a pretty good variety of dive watches that will fit a lot of people's preferences. The Sub200 is a bit more stylish, and not as bulky as the 300 although it is a 42 mm case. It also comes as a chronograph if that's your thing. The 300 is the classic Doxa, but a bit too tool watch for some people. It also comes in a carbon case as well as limited editions. The 600 has a different bracelet, and I think a cleaner looking dial. It's also 40mm, which is pretty good for most wrists, but not itty bitty wrist people. All come in many colors, which is nice. I think these watches are the perfect vacation watch when you spend a lot of time on the beach.

I bought a 300T recently, it’s nicely made and iconic but I feel that’s about it. My Edox Hydrosub is a nicer wearing experience, cosc certified and has better bezel action, to name a similar vintage reissue. That said the Doxa has a je ne sais quoi that is hard to define.
