So, I own this watch myself. I own it in yellow divingstar. It was a gift for my college graduation so obviously I’m going to be heavily biased, but I don’t mind the bracelet. I find the actual links and flexibility of it to be quite comfortable. Also, the 19mm lugs don’t bother me because I don’t intend on changing the strap, and if I did, it would go on a Barton rubber as they have 19mm options for $20. That said, the clasp is by far the worst part of this watch. It’s like 1990’s Breitling colt territory and that is not a compliment. As for the price, it’s a case of, it is what it is. Once you get into Swiss “heritage” brands, the law of diminishing returns comes into play big time. Tudor is quite happy to sell you an ETA 2824 for $2200. The bracelet may be higher quality than the Doxa, but not $1200 dollars better. This is a very imperfect watch. Yet, when the yellow dial plays with the light, it just hits me in all the right ways.

If Jody has got any sense; he'll revert to the old one. It's like scrapping the map as a background to individual watches. Most of these recent copy-cat Jenni-Elle backgrounds look like they are in a funeral parlour:
      Just Blue Fish copied immediately
Eric Rivera has a more funky one; but with the identical vestige useless shelf
Bark and Jack has a very similar set up, but both he and @watcheric are too savvy with the photography to have a morbidly dark and funereal background. Bring back the white book shelves, Jodi!

I've got both the SUB 1200T and the SUB 300 and they have the same clasp on the bracelet. To be honest it's super slim, very comfortable and does a great job. I would hate to see a modern chunky milled clasp on a retro inspired watch. The dive extension is a joke though, i can't even fit it over my 3mm wetsuit.

  • @roamready9732
    @roamready9732 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Jodi, great vid 👍 Your "niggles" are all valid. I purchased a Doxa 1200T 7 years ago for my 30th and despite the aforementioned "niggles" it is one of my favs. The bracelet and clasp make for sense on the 'vintage' reissues as the bracelets where much the same in the 60's. But on a new design these are less-than-choice. Also, although the website claims "ETA" my watch maker upon servicing my Doxa reported it was indeed a Sellita! -Not a deal breaker, but indeed marketing that should be checked. If anyone is interested in a review of the 1200T I posted one some time ago, the videography is terrible but there ya go.

Lately, I am intrigued by orange dial color watches. Finally, I bought an Islander 38mm Automatic Dive Watch with Solid-Link Bracelet, AR Sapphire Crystal, and Luminous Ceramic Bezel Insert #ISL-22. SII NH36 automatic movement with day-date, hand winding, and hacking; by Islander Watch Company for 299 USD plus shipping to Italy 16.14 USD, plus import taxes, duties, carrier commission that I estimate an extra 70 USD. Not bad at all! I can't wait to receive it. I'd like to see a review of that watch made by you.

Did Doxa go through one of these things where they almost died and someone bought them just to pimp the name? To me, Doxa is such a respectable name but whenever I research them for purchase I run into the issues you described here: the price just doesn't match the specs. It's too bad, the actual Doxa's from the 60s and 70s were great watches for their era.

Glad you got to check out a Doxa Sub Jody. 👍 I’m a big fan of theirs but the prices have gone crazy. Those straps and bracelets 😳.
I own a vintage Sub 300T Professional and the first re-issue from around 2000. For many years they were my only watches. ( Until I started watching your channel😱😉)
That re-issue was a limited edition of 1000 and roughly the same price as your Sub 200! Ok 20 years is a long time.
But does it suffer from the Porsche Boxster problem, in that it’s not a 911? And you’ll catch yourself thinking...should have bought the Sub 300T.

I've said this before, but 19mm lugs show up a lot for how "non-regulation" they are. It's annoying for sure, but I'm almost more annoyed that strap-sellers haven't noticed and started making more 19mm straps at this point, since it seems watch-makers aren't going to budge on the issue. I figure if someone started selling bands in that size they could do good business.
And, for what it's worth, WatchGecko offers a bunch of leather options, a few NATOs, a mesh and a "oyster-ish" all in 19mm, for anyone who is looking.

Jody, thank you for that comparison between the Doxa and the Chronos. I don't think I've ever seen a better illustration of how a larger-diameter watch can read much smaller than another one with actually smaller dimensions. Fascinating stuff, the design of the watch does not solely depend on the diameter, it's all about the lugs, bezel, everything that goes into it and just makes it what it is. Both are beautiful watches, but it is interesting to look at how the subtle details form the overall aesthetic, and our perception of the watch's size.

Having owned an SPB143 before, and now owning the Sub 200 Sharkhunter... QC is better on the Doxa, as is accuracy of the SW200 (previously ETA) movement vs. the 6R35 from Seiko. I had a similar experience with one of my favorite watches . . . I have an edox 80503 and I got it with a leather strap. After a few months I decided I wanted a steel bracelet. But it's 21mm. So after trying one that didn't fit happily, I ponied up the $110 for thiers(including shipping from Switzerland) and I got it.
While I am glad it now has a steel bracelet that fits, it has a cheap pressed steel clasp and no real adjustability. I have seen far nice bracelets on watches that cost less whole than this one bracelet did. But I have it now.

I'm a big collector, mostly vintage and micros, and this is one of my faves. Your negatives made me hesitate but glad I picked one up. The bracelet isn't an issue and, though I'm typically a strap fan, I keep this on the bracelet since it's a beaut and goes with it so well. Comparing this watch to the 3 you mention with better bracelets seems like missing the point. Are you reviewing the watch, or an accessory to the watch (the bracelet)? I much prefer the watch itself over the other 3. I'm not noticing any rattling at all when I wear it, and I'll never use the divers extension. It's nicer than my vintage Omega bracelets. 19mm straps, including NATO types, aren't difficult to find either. Like you I have complaints about Doxa's accessory pricing and movement description, but the movement of my particular example tests better than any watch I've ever put on my timegrapher. My Sub 200 was sold new in Feb 2023 though I bought it used, and the timing is a consistently spot on 0 secs/day. The amplitude is 304 with zero beat error, and the 2 graph lines appear as a single horizontal line. Super watch.

19mm lug width is the deal breaker for any price in a diver watch, perfect bracelet look though.

Actually these aren’t 19 mm lugs; they are 19.05 mm lugs. That is to say they’re 3/4 of an inch. That was the standard size for sporty American market watches back when this watches original was made. Vintage inspired with 3/4 inch straps is period correct. Generally speaking a 20 mm strap fits just fine.
Further, you are paying for the Doxa name (better known than Yema- thanks Clive Cussler/Dirk Pitt), the Swiss ETA movement, which may not be impressive but it is relatively expensive, and the “Swiss made” on the dial.
Comparing standard Swiss name-brand watch pricing to micro brands is a bit unfair. There is almost never great value to paying for a name, except for getting the name. What that’s worth is obviously up to buyers, but at one time the Doxa Sub-300T was a fairly direct competitor to the Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster 300 and Blancpain Fifty-Fathoms. In that light, a step down to the 200T for just a grand really can seem like a good value.
As for the quality of the bracelet, I assure you that bracelet is light years ahead of what Doxa, Rolex, and Omega (I am pretty sure the blancpain was only available with a strap) put on their watches back in the 60s. Vostok sells a pretty decent and authentic copy of 1960s stainless steel Swiss dive bracelets on their Amphibia, actually.

Love the looks of that dial and crystal. Your niggles and moans are spot on, some little things to tweak to make it soooo much better. Current configuration and price would be a no go for me. Make the suggested changes and I would have to do some hard comparison shopping, but it would at least make sense to compare at that point, currently, not so much. Of course, $1k watches are conspicuously absent from my collection currently, so perhaps my discussing $1k watch comparisons for purchase is equal to Doxa’s dream world strap pricing.....😂

Another great review. I was initially so excited by the announcement of the impending release of these 200's I was thinking there was definitely one in my future but that 19mm lug width along with the size killed it for me...especially that lug width. Wanted drilled lugs and a solid SS bezel option for the Sharkhunter. Then all would have been perfect for me. I would have hoped for better timekeeping too. I have NE15 and NH35 as well as Miyotas that keep much better time and a SW200 that only gains a second in a week.

Jody, please consider the orange (Professional...insert term for orange here) Seiko Samurai. I received this wat h as a gift from my wife and, truly, love it! Great looks, great specs for money, yes, hardlex, I get it, but what a look! I am a bigger guy 6'5", 7.5 inch wrist, but I have to recommend this one as an alternative to the Doxa!

Suppose the strap price was meant to be 45 AUD ...
Btw where do you do find the straps on their site? I can't find it.
The yellow colourway is even more legible and attractive than the orange one to me.

19mm lugs is no problem. Just use a file and you easily make a 20mm bracelet 19mm, and a sharp knife of scalpel on a leather or rubber strap. My Tag Heuer is a 19 mm and I've adjusted many straps for it
