Either go for an open-box laptop from a reputable source or a new windows laptop that is on sale. In the US for example, the HP Envy is popular among students since in goes on sale at places like BestBuy for $499 (currently on sale as I am typing this). This gets you the 16" Ryzen 5 8000 series model with 8gb (DDR5 Ram) and 512gb SSD. $150 + more and you get the Ryzen 7 version with 16gb ram and 1tb storage

iPads can work as a student's main machine if you only use specific apps like for note taking and web browsing. Anything beyond that and you run into filesystem and multitasking limitations.
I've tried to write a document on word, 365. Terrible experience. Tried to use it as a thin client to remote a powerful PC, the mouse wasn't tracking properly (Splashtop and Moonlight). So.. stick to a laptop.

Note for many STEM students - while you will see many MACs in your lectures, youll find so much software does not run correctly on ARM - Matlab RTL straight up gives different answers, Vivado, LTspice (just better workflow on windows), Altium, fusion360, many advanced sim software. Theres a reason many professional workplaces give windows laptops. When you graduate you can change your personal machine to mac, but know you make your life much harder without some x86 system (yes even Snapdragon with Prism has issues) when your trying to complete your degree

@@NightSide22 the X elite chips are still new, so prism is still the only option for most people. ARM compilers are still a lil sketch for windows, so you will need wsl. Things like MATLAB RTL and vivado can't get updated, since the algorithms needed to generate designs relies heavily on the nature of x86 architecture. If you're doing civil or mech or tronics, fusion 360 I hear is porting. CS, if you don't want to touch embedded systems and only want full stack, then go for it. Otherwise any embedded programming is a either a big no go or a ginormous hassle to get running. If your elec eng / comp eng, don't even bother U will suffer. That's all I can speak on for now

I picked up a used Dell XPS 15 9510 in White with an RTX 3050 Ti, i7-11800H, OLED, 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage all for just $1000! Checked the thermals, zero issues whatsoever. It's been running great, and i'm 100% using it for the next 4 years at minimum. I love the used market.

Why would anyone want to use a Chromebook for $500? if all you want to do is to use the browser, you can do that in a normal windows laptop. and you will get way better laptop for that same price, with much better processor, more than the pitiful 128GB SSD. yeah, I know you don't need more storage for a chrome book, but the price can be way lower. e.g.: 1. yoga 7 2 in 1 with 8840HS for $499 only downside is 8GB RAM, but if you want it to browse too, this is more than enough. 2. same Lenovo Flex 5i with windows for $370. the same laptop for 130 less with windows 3. Asus vivobook with same specs for $200 or a laptop that can still do everything the $500 one can except touch screen for less than half the price. and the build quality of flex 5i is not macbook quality either.
I bought G16's (2024 model) for my nephews and they seem to be happy with them. But yes, the one from last year is a really really good option for that price.
What you said about the Macbook is so true. I recommend it if you can afford it. Gave my wife an M1 Air bec I got tired of her always asking me to help her out on her Windows laptop lagging / BSOD etc. With the Macbook, she barely complains even if she never closes tabs / apps. I don't even have to do the quarterly Laptop storage cleanup / maintenance that I used to do to her Windows bec it bogs down after a while. She also doesn't have to bring a huge and heavy charger, she can charge it with her phone charger. It's perfect for people who just want to get some work done.
I use an MSI Modern 15 with 5700u. Screen is acceptable. Battery life is ok-ish. Its track pad sucks but I use keyboard and mouse 95% of the time (outside of meetings) so not too bad. Anw the HP Envy core ultra 5 deal looks really really good tbh.

Walmart has the MacBook Air m1 for $649 right now brand new and even though it’s a few years old it’s great for basic usage (like you said your wife has been using one with zero complaints). It’s what I recommend for most college students still.
iPads are great but not easy to do school work on. My laptop broke so I got an iPad as a cheap quick easy replacement… and even though it was reliable … using Microsoft office on it was challenging .
going for earlier models and even buying 2nd hand versions of the earlier models is the way to go for back to school laptops. There area ton of lenovo laptops that go for under 500 dollars and even HP laptops go for under 500 dollars when looking at 2nd hand and earlier models. I don't think people fully appreciate the number of models that came out in the last 4-5 years. There is incredible value for money in those segments.

Chromebooks really are underrated if you just want something for productivity, which is all many students need. Also, 8GB of RAM on a Mac or PC is sufficient for basic productivity as well. Most people think they need more than they do. It really doesn't take very high specs to run a browser and office apps smoothly, so long as you're not trying to run 50+ tabs at once.
Chromebooks suck for anything outside of browsing. There's no proper office suite, file explorer, and android/linux support is very subpar. Plus they're extremely locked down and come with terrible hardware specs. You're better off getting a cheap used Thinkpad and installing a Linux distro on it.

Hey, I’ve been using the iPad Air M1 as my ONLY device for a Humanities degree. It has been solid for the most part. Light and Powerful, it never hangs or stutters, Apps stay in the memory forever and open lightening fast and there is No better device for both typed and handwritten notes. I personally use Notion and Freeform(didn’t find a solution that has both stable typed notes and apple pencil support). However, with only a 10.9 inch display it does get cramped(that’s why i use an external monitor on my desk), although the 13 inch Air will solve this issue, and the apple Magic keyboard is not Lappable at all so you’ll be tied to a desk. If you are looking for a light weight machine for browsing the web, reading study material, Note taking, and watching content on the side(after all the iPad is just a display). Cheers!
I have one kislux bag I got in 2019, it's the LV white catogram speedy. It's counter quality and it has a nice honey patina now, so the leather is real. I think whatever makes you happy go for it. I've seen LV with plastic leather and blood red glaze...

The g14 had a bunch of sales including the 4060 variant from this year for 1099 USD. The 4070 variant G14 and and G16 2024 are also on sale in the US now
They're cheaper and get the productivity part down. There's a lot of relief that background or browser tabs apps don't guzzle power either. I could get an extra 1hr of time by quitting system tray apps on my ZenBook x86, and I no longer worry on my MacBook. They're not ready for serious games, but casual older games are fine. Many serious apps don't run, but for a college student, they may not matter that much. For programming, they're fine too. Pycharm, Visual studio, Anaconda, clion are all available on arm. You can also run arm ubuntu but I haven't tried WSL on them. Virtualbox is not available yet. They don't even do emulation, mostly virtualization. VMware player is available. Excellent for staying off the charger, and you could affordably get a lot more ram and ssd storage than on a Mac. Personally, I got a refurb Mac. 17 hours browsing, 9 hours on handbrake, on battery. So I can continue running handbrake while getting more endurance than my precious laptop :D.
My college explicitly says they don’t recommend Chromebook in classes. I don’t know the reasons but they cite on their course selections that chromebooks won’t run some programs and are generally not recommended overall.
if yall need to go even lower you could get refurbished laptop for as low as $100, theres no limit on what u can find, and then u just put linux on it and its good enough for most tasks but thats prop not for everyone

Why would you recommend obsolete laptops at purchase? The spectre is a great laptop but its been discontinued and will be locked out of copilot festures. Not everyone values AI, i don't, but that's how the market is going. I dont understand why you would recommend someone buy something that's outdated out of the box.

@@RyanMilbrod-n4w Apparently the instability issues are mostly affecting CPUs with more than 65w of TDP and core ultra falls under that range. But I'd still avoid any 13th/14th gen intel laptops regardless since there's no real way of telling. Plus AMD zen 5 got released recently so now so we'll be getting more laptops that come with those.

fusion 360 has an apple silicon native version!! (runs like shit on smthn like the m1, m2, but the pro and maxs are all great)

my kids are in University and less than 1% of students have Chromebooks. Chromebooks are useless.

4070 variant of g14 is on sale for 1599 not a good deal. Slim 5 makes more sense.

They barely work on most apps.
They're cheaper and get the productivity part down. There's a lot of relief that background or browser tabs apps don't guzzle power either. I could get an extra 1hr of time by quitting system tray apps on my ZenBook x86, and I no longer worry on my MacBook. They're not ready for serious games, but casual older games are fine.
Many serious apps don't run, but for a college student, they may not matter that much. For programming, they're fine too. Pycharm, Visual studio, Anaconda, clion are all available on arm. You can also run arm ubuntu but I haven't tried WSL on them.
Virtualbox is not available yet. They don't even do emulation, mostly virtualization. VMware player is available.
Excellent for staying off the charger, and you could affordably get a lot more ram and ssd storage than on a Mac.
Personally, I got a refurb Mac. 17 hours browsing, 9 hours on handbrake, on battery. So I can continue running handbrake while getting more endurance than my precious laptop :D.

My college explicitly says they don’t recommend Chromebook in classes. I don’t know the reasons but they cite on their course selections that chromebooks won’t run some programs and are generally not recommended overall.
Yup that checks out Chromebooks are more about security than anything else it's why you can't really install apps on it

if yall need to go even lower you could get refurbished laptop for as low as $100, theres no limit on what u can find, and then u just put linux on it and its good enough for most tasks but thats prop not for everyone

It may have the performance, but not year the same experience and also the iPad has a small screen 11inchs, most laptops are in the range of 13-16 inches and what he did not tell you about is the cost of the keyboard and case, which could rack you up $200 or more. Please just go for a laptop I like windows but try both at your local best buy or something.

Why would you recommend obsolete laptops at purchase? The spectre is a great laptop but its been discontinued and will be locked out of copilot festures. Not everyone values AI, i don't, but that's how the market is going. I dont understand why you would recommend someone buy something that's outdated out of the box.

1) MacBook Air

@@RyanMilbrod-n4w Apparently the instability issues are mostly affecting CPUs with more than 65w of TDP and core ultra falls under that range. But I'd still avoid any 13th/14th gen intel laptops regardless since there's no real way of telling. Plus AMD zen 5 got released recently so now so we'll be getting more laptops that come with those.
