Luka Doncic INJURES Ankle - Doctor Explains *IMPORTANT* Lesson About Preventing Ankle Sprains

  • Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks injured his left ankle in Game 3 of the NBA playoffs first round series against the Los Angeles Clippers. Doncic tried to come back into the game but ultimately was unable to finish and had to sit the rest of the Maverick's loss. Luka's status for the rest of the series is uncertain with an MRI coming next for his ankle. Certainly there should be concern about his availability for game 4, but we shouldn't rule him out yet for the series. In this video Dr. Brian Sutterer will explain the injury and review a very important point about preventing ankle sprains based on what happened to Luka Doncic

    Luka is scheduled for an MRI tomorrow to give a better idea of the severity. This injury is a perfect example of the important muscle training needed to help prevent and properly rehab ankle sprains. Remember, you want to train the rest of your kinetic chain to take the possible stress off your ankles!

    I’m a physical therapist (and a mavs fan), and it’s great to see another profession talk about the importance of the hip’s role in ankle stability as well as the importance of proprioceptive training for injury prevention. Some people will just rest until the swelling/inflammation is down then slap an ankle brace thinking they can perform the same way. Structurally things may be “good,” but that’s only one part of the puzzle. Great video!

      Yeah, funny how the NBA never showed that view. Doc had them play street ball all night. Kawaii probably got an extra 50k for putting Luca on the bench. I’ve come down and rolled my foot on someone else’s foot. That’s the first time I’ve seen someone roll their ankle when it’s planted. Maybe the NBA should take a second look at that?

    • @potato-whiz
      @potato-whiz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never noticed Kawhi clipped him, either, until Dr. Sutterer pointed it out. It makes more sense now, his foot was not fully planted and Kawhi’s bump knocked him off kilter. That really sucks. Just bad timing really.

      Josh Thompson
      Conspiracy, it’s not some story, watch the video in the intro. The doctor’s footage shows Kawaii’s knee caused the injury.
      Kawaii takes at least 4 steps and he still has the ball in his hand when the clip ends. It’s easier to count his steps in slow motion. On Kawaii’s 2nd step he definitely hits Luca with his knee perpendicular to Luca’s. I don’t think he was trying to roll Luca’s ankle cause I have never seen anyone roll their ankle while it was planted. I think Kawaii was trying to get a charge and he planted his knee into Luca’s leg right below his knee. And you can’t tell me that Doc didn’t have the Clippers playing “street ball” during that game.

      Just think of it like this, any time you step outside you can get hit by something, like a car idk (knock on wood) but you still go outside. Ankle sprains or even other injuries can happen at any moment, but that should prevent you from playing basketball or whatever sport you play, because they you are limiting yourself to something that MIGHT happen. Just try to strenghten your ankle, hips, thighs, work on your mobility and mechanics and you should be good to go (unless a doctor told you to not play anymore)

    Everything you said is 100% correct but I also think there could be also some other aspects that followed to this injury. First is the bad timing or rather the lack of Luka´s defensive ability. Because he was late his upper body was out of balance. His left foot wasn´t planted well while the force was pushing over it. Adding the knee bumb to that his foot never stood a chance. Watching the game I also think he might have went out of strenght. He looked shaky , like his sugar level dropped and his body wasn´t able to counter the bumb.

    Considering that luca is the face and future of the franchise, I think that dallas should take precaution like the pelicans and just keep luca out for the rest of the series. Lose the battle for now, but win the war for later

      You never know when you’ll get injured, could be any given night. He is in playoffs, if he feels good to go, he should play. Should watch last dance and hear what MJ said when he had foot injury.

    These are the type of sprains you would often get as a kid and you'd have to walk for like few seconds and then you're good to go again

    Speaking as someone who over the last 25 years, has had 3 lateral ankle ligament replacement surgery's, and have also had my accessory navicular removed and posterior tibial tendon reattached on my right ankle , all i have to do is LOOK at an uneven floor and i am on my arse lol . MESSING UP YOU ANKLE IS ONE OF THE HARDEST THING TO RECOVER FROM. Luka wants to get this sorted now, before more drastic measures are needed or he will be walking on glass ankles.

    Along with training to strengthen upper legs and hip muscles to help prevent these sprains that he’s shown he’s susceptible to I feel like it could be very beneficial to switch to a high top shoe for more support for the ankle. Do you think this is something a Mavericks athletic trainer would suggest to luka or do you think it’s not really that big of a deal. Would love to hear your opinion, thanks!
