  • Steph Curry of the NBA Golden State Warriors suffered yet ANOTHER ankle injury recently against the Los Angeles Clippers and now his status for round 2 of the NBA Playoffs is uncertain.
    I reviewed many of his prior ankle injuries and looked at the current research about ankle sprains to help teach you all some of the key reasons why a player like Curry could be getting these recurrent injuries.
    Thanks as always for watching!

    There are certainly more things to put someone at risk of ankle injuries such as core/hip weakness, poor balance and proprioception to name a few, but these are two of the factors that can be appreciated with looking at the clips so I hope you all learn from this and can have more insight next time someone rolls an ankle!

      I think you and others would also be given more insight if you look at his shooting form and the way he lands.
      EDIT: I should've elaborated. Ive seen the way he lands in another video studying landing mechanics and he always sends that right foot forward. I thought there may be some correlation because of how Kobe Bryant injured his Achilles due to overuse and overexertion of that right foot. Hopefully this is useful👍

      Have you read the research article where they concluded that the reaction time of the peroneals (contracting to prevent excessive inversion) is SLOWER than the time it takes for an inversion sprain to take place (measured by degrees per second)?

    Secondly, my question:
    What ankle braces do you recommend? I’ve torn my ligaments a third time recently while playing (european) football and am looking for a slim but effective brace recommendation since I tried a bunch of them but they were all really bulky. I’m doing rehab, stabilization and I got orthopedic insoles but I’ll wear a brace for further stability & security.

    Amazing video, per usual. Can I ask a question? I know it’s hard over the internet, but I recently hurt my ankle trying to dunk and i could barely walk on it the first like 2 weeks. It was my first ankle sprain (I’m assuming) and it still hurts a little 6 weeks later. It’s fine to walk on now, but if I run on it or anything I start to feel it. I can jog on it, but running starts to hurt. If I press down right under the front part of the ball on my right side of my ankle i feel it. Also on the left side if I press down right under the ball it hurts. What can I do? I haven’t been able to play basketball or anything in so long! I went to the doctor around week 4 and he said he thinks it’s just a sprain and the x-rays were fine so is there anything I could do you suggest? Thanks!

This is personal for me because I also have cmt1a in about a month ago we were told that I have passed on this genetic disease to the youngest of my two sons. I know that Todd McCullough only played like 4 years in the NBA. But he made it there and his career was cut short when he was diagnosed with CMT. I assume having hyper-mobility can also play into a heightened chance of these kinds of hyper-extension injuries, correct? I have hyper-mobility, but only in specific joint sets - My Ankles, knees, fingers & wrists. No, it's not at all near to the point of being capable of contortionist type mobility, but it's still extra range of motion beyond that of what's considered normal. I tore my left ATFL in October of 2017 in the middle of a pickup game when my ankle just kind of gave out mid-air and never snapped back, specifically, it stayed in the relaxed position of a jump peak, thus I landed on it at 110 degrees. My left ankle has always gotten really loose after sprinting and lunging. The more I did that, the more it just randomly rolls, which I sincerely believe was a key factor in what happened when I tore that ATFL. And it makes sense, even if temporarily, you'd think those tendons and ligaments would wind up stretched out aways from where they should be, obviously with the muscles having that same stretching happening. That's as an example.
    I feel like that ankle incident of mine also pairs well with knee hyper-extension - Typically happens most often to those with hyper-mobile knee joints. Their knees sometimes are naturally inverted when standing, or leaning back, and randomly can be found swapping around between being inverted, straight & bent frequently, often without their realization. Mine are like this. So, as a result, that hyper-mobility I truly think can be one heck of a major player in having an increased chance for injuries like these. But I would love to know what your thoughts on this are.

    Had an interesting thought when you mentioned that Steph's repeated ankle sprains have stretched out his ligaments very far already. It's going to sound pretty radical/crazy, but has there ever been discussion, speculation, or research in surgically shortening (cutting out part of) the ligament to mimic an "un-stretched" ligament? What would be the problems/benefits associated with that, and is it even a viable procedure? Thanks, keep up the great content!

Plus the Curry’s have an elastic feel if I remember correctly which influences the rolling of the ankle during hard cuts. Any thoughts?

    Once you sprain an ankle, you will always have the issue!

      I can relate. In my case, I found the shoes with great ankle support, tied them harder, and I stuck with that particular model (Hyperdunk 2015)

      I found it to be opposite for me. I badly rolled my ankle when I was younger and that ankle are more resistant to getting injured or recover much faster

      @keithmaik7428 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, but form my experience I have been less prone because of how cautious I am with having another ankle sprain. So most likely, it’s on the mental that would prevent you from having one in the future. Just my observation

      Keith Maik make sense. maybe your body able to compensate the ankle roll movement before it really cause significant damage

    Hey Brian,
    First off just wanted to say that I’ve been waiting for a channel like this for a while and love your stuff! With that, I think you may find my injury interesting. Could you please do a video on broken scaphoids? I just had my third surgery last week on my proximal pole non-union fracture called a Medial Femoral Trochlea with a bone graft taken from my knee and put into my wrist by Dr. James Higgins MD (one of only two people in the world to do this procedure). Phillip Lindsay (Most recently), Bradley Beal, Patrick Kane, and others have had this injury and I think it would be great to educate the public about it, especially because it can commonly be self-misdiagnosed as a sprain (what happened to me). I have been dealing with this injury for over a year and have learned a great deal about the anatomy of the knee and wrist, with a lot of the things I have found extremely fascinating. I think it would be a very interesting injury that many people could relate to (especially because it is so common in young men). Thank you, and keep it up!

    my ankles do the exact same thing. the doctor said i have 0 stability to the outside of my ankle and it'll never return and rehab + braces can only do so much. thankfully, if i roll my ankle, which happens about once a week, it hurts for about 10 minutes and then it's fine. the shitty thing is even things like the change from carpeted floor to tile can cause my ankle to roll if i step on it wrong.

    Everyone thinks about the hips but seems like everyone forgets about the foot’s role in stabilizing the leg. I think Chris Duffin and Donnie Thompson are the big proponents of direct foot strengthening to stabilize the rest of the body

    Could wearing shoes that tighten around the ankle help him? The shoes I wear make it so if I roll on my side, the only way for it to completely roll would be for me to fall over, lol, probably just me. The shoes are quite bulky though...

    I've had an ankle injury about 15 weeks ago, it was an inversion injury. I haven't gained back all the dorsiflexsion on my ankle, what could be the cause of it?

    • @harpauldagreat
      @harpauldagreat 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Angana Kalsare Palihapitiya Gamage If it was a really bad injury, I assume it might be scar tissue that is hindering any flexibility for dorsiflexion. Try moving it in full range of movement more and more and check where there is pain. Or go to a rehab center, they'll most likely trying removing car tissue noninvasively.

    I have broken my right ankle 3 times had 2 lateral ligament reconstructions on the the ankle i have also had keyhole surgery on the ankle to remove scar tissue. And i am currently of work and have been for 8 weeks and will probably be of for another 4 weeks after having had my accessory navicular bone removed . The issues with my right ankle/foot started when i was a teen and the surgery's seem to have a shelf life its almost every 10 years that i need another surgery and after a while the foot and ankle just wont hold the repair. With the stress and activity that Curry is putting on his ankles its not surprising that they keep failing there is only so much a weaken joint can take .He also wants to be careful as there can be other joints affected by theses injury's like his knees and hips and it can also affect you back as theses are the problems that I have accumulated over the years .

    I used to sprain my ankle and i aould be out for weeks and my ankle would be blue and purple and swollen, as time went on it hurt less and less and took less time to heal and didnt even get purple or blue....but the instability got worse, ill just be walking and if the driveway is uneven a little my ankle will turn and ill quickly pick it up but the sprain happened and hurt like heck....my ankles are permanantly swollen....
