•May 2019 Update:
The idea to do this originated in May 2016, when some of the guys got ahold of the arrangement and wanted to sing it for fun. I suggested that we record it since I had all the gear. We met up at my house and had 4 hours to learn and perform it from scratch. All the vocals are our actual voices. The audio is a mix of live singing and re-tracks. In post, I added snaps and claps, and did the best that I could to make everything line up, which wasn't an easy task. I knew that the timing was a little off even before I read 500+ comments telling me that it was off.
If it sounds like one of the soloists is out of time, it is NOT his fault. All of us are able to keep rhythm, but our time constraints kept us from learning this to the point where we could perform it straight through live. I posted this video, not because I thought it was perfect, but because we all enjoy music, and I wanted these hard-working and talented guys to see the fruits of their labor.

Jo I’m not out to debate or shout anybody down. In rare exceptions when a new interpretation gives fantastic new life to a tune (Joe Cocker’s take of With a Little Help From My Friends), I typically prefer a cover to be more or less faithful in capturing as much of the original’s sound or spirit. Maybe I’m in the minority, but I doubt it. These kids are talented but do not approach the fire of Joel’s original.

The voices are great, but the rhythm is... not as good. A lot of rushing - though very together, oddly. Good ensemble, I guess that is.
Look, it's not nice to be insulting, but firstly, Agent Kennedy was, being fairly constructive about it; secondly, just cos something's difficult doesn't make this performance better or worse (nor does the skill of a critic); and thirdly, how can people learn what's wrong with their performances if nobody criticises them?
Basically, what you're suggesting is a world of yes-men and yes-women and a lack of improvement because no matter how awful something is, if you put in effort is was great, champ. Good job.

@@druidboy76 Yooo, both a teenager and musician here. They are in fact, quite off-tempo in some spots, although their sound was incredibly good.
Literally the entirety of pursuing any form of music is basically taking constructive criticism. I'd want someone to tell me if I really needed to work with a metronome, because it's how you improve. No performers are gonna be crushed by being given a legitimate suggestion on how to grow their skills.
I love how each person’s individual talent is showcased. So enjoyable to watch.

I think people look for perfection in music too much today, which really drives people away from singing because they're scared to be judged. Let's be honest, there were some "flaws" in this performance, but you guys appear to genuinely love music. The fact that you all got together to do this says a lot. It shows that you put time and effort into creating something together and I think that's beautiful. Thank you for sharing your hard work and talents. Great job, guys! It's a great feeling to get the blend of voices just right, isn't it? Toucanly Stanly Get off your high horse. If all you can focus on is tempo in music, you’re not making music, you’re hitting things with sticks. There’s so many aspects of music, and despite the fact that this song has a few issues, it’s certainly well made, and I applaud them for their efforts.

Regarding the minor flaws people mentioned: shake it off. We’re so used to hearing songs in which the pitch has been digitally perfected after recording that we don’t know what real singing sounds like. A cappella rocks. Keep it up!
the vocals are great, they needed a click track in their ears, I think it'd have added a lot more punch with the confidence on each beat. Their vocal work is good, I think that would have really helped them to nail the timing of it all. This is still a hell of a lot better than I could do vocally, but as a drummer I can hear the timing struggles. Awesome work for sure, people seem to agree with the fact it's been heard 2M times.

It's not the pitch to what we are not used to. It's the timbre of the voice we don't recognize anymore. And that also explains why everyone sings so lightly and bright instead of deep and dark like singers used to do.

I think there is some editting and/ or supplementation to this recording. I was listening for the baritone parts and unless the kid in the blue shirt is a ventriloquist, someone else it singing some of the those notes.
And the dude in the aqua colored shirt shifts in the different video garbs. Sometimes he's 3rd from left, sometimes 2nd from right. i think they are all singing, it's just the audio doesn't match the video and catches my eye. Good job either way!
Ok, you tricked me. Who's singing bass? I thought it was the tall guy on the right with the glasses. Then he started singing all high! If that was him singing bass, he's got a great range.

Jeannie it is the glasses guy, as a bass myself that range seems perfectly reasonable. Most people think that low basses can only go down, but some choir songs have low bass sing incredibly high for their part since most harmonies just have single step differences between parts.
Probably the man bun guy, the way he keeps his head lower (in a way) while singing and when everyone else has solos there is still the same bass sound
