Here’s a little background on the song: The song is a tribute to the doo-wop sounds of the '50s that Joel loved, complete with lyrics about being crazy in love with a girl and is presented in the style of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. The song features Joel on all vocals and that required him to cover a lot of range. The original plan was to bring in a vocal group to sing it with him, but that didn't work out. Joel was hesitant because he didn't want all the voices to sound like they came from one person, so he envisioned himself as various characters and gave them different vocal styles. "I did what I call method singing," he told Sirius XM in 2016. "I imagined myself as a skinny Italian kid from Newark, and then I did another voice and I thought of myself as a big Black football player with a real deep bass voice. The music video is about old guys in their old high-school just after a reunion. They are walking around singing and reminiscing etc, when a time paradox occurs. They keep seeing their younger selves breaking through the barrier of time. At the end they discover a vortex in the bathroom that sucks them in and trades them out with their younger selves who abruptly steal their lives.

What's amazing about this song is that this man isn't trying to get someone to like him, nor is acting like he likes her, nor trying, nor settling. He falls for her, he's happy to be able to feel the emotions involved, to be himself, and hope for the best, and if doesn't work out, it's ok; he's honest, and although want's it to workout and will treat her the best he could if it does, he's happy regardless for the experience.

I just spent the last five minutes looking for the original artist for this song, not believing it was Billy Joel. What a great tribute to the era; I really thought this was from the 50’s.
Saammmme! I looked it up and was like Billie Joel? No way! I even looked further to see if he doing a cover of an original, but its is originally from him! 😂❤
This video represents a couple of guys who never grew out of being a senior at prom. They haven't been there "for the longest time" and spend their days wondering around the abandoned school that's been kept the same since the 50's. They feed on the nostalgia their since their lives are that depressing and they wanna go back to their senior days. The African American janitor represents reality because at the start he says to billy Joel "you gonna be much longer son?" As reality is waiting for them to grow out of the senior phase. Towards the end it shows them putting on modern clothing (modern at the time) and leaving the school. The janitor is shocked and see's them return to reality because they haven't been there "for the longest time".

How I Met Your Mother (sitcom) in which two of the main cast sing this song with 2 other imaginary versions of themselves. Despite it sounding like a weird animation or some crap it really is an incredibly funny and even at some points emotional (although it did screw up the final ending somewhat). Now that I'm in my 30's I actually related and appreciate this song more. We can become bored with life as we get older and it's nice to have that teenage passion about something or someone. It makes life worth it.
How many are here because this is one of Billy Joel's best songs, and not because of social media or any movie or TV show. Basically those who truly love older music. I myself favor music from the 60's and 80's.

I didn’t grow up with this song, but I’ll never forget when it just clicked for me. I had just moved to a new town and was feeling disoriented for many reasons. While at the drugstore, this song came on, and as I went through the aisles I could hear at least 5 customers and staff singing along. I joined in on what I knew, and couldn’t help but smile. This is such a classic song. The video is absolutely adorable, but terrifying in a hilarious way. 5 middle-aged men come creeping out of the shadows, snapping their fingers, singing at Billy, and he just looks around like, "oh, cool". Then he turns on his old guy swag, and they all creep around the school in what appears to be the dead of night. Haha, love it!

I feel like no one ever talks about how good of a singer he is. He’s fantastic.
It's kind of a given
Let's also discuss how he sounds like a different person in a ton of Songs. I love Billy, but damn bro

I'm not a fan of his, but I have all the respect in the world for Billy, as well as for Phil Collins, Colin Hay, Huey Lewis, Steve Perry etc.

He falls for her, he's happy to be able to feel the emotions involved, to be himself, and hope for the best, and if doesn't work out, it's ok; he's honest, and although want's it to workout and will treat her the best he could if it does, he's happy regardless for the experience.
that is some genius level thinking.

This is one of my all time favorite feel-good songs from the 80s. It's hard to listen to this and not smile. I guess it's because this is an awesome homage to 50s music, which I love.
I can't believe i only recently discovered this song. It's by far one of the best almost acapella songs i've ever heared (there is a base in the background and the fingersnapping goes over in a drum). All the voices perfectly lined together. I can't stop listening!
Max Kik my high school choir sang this Acapella last year, it’s such good lyrics and rhythm, so fun to sing
Another great a capella sing is the flying pickets only you
Billy Joel actually performed *all* of the different vocal tracks for this version too.
BikeLion i know! Just amazing!
Max Kik hoodie huh
This is such a classic song. The video is absolutely adorable, but terrifying in a hilarious way. 5 middle-aged men come creeping out of the shadows, snapping their fingers, singing at Billy, and he just looks around like, "oh, cool". Then he turns on his old guy swag, and they all creep around the school in what appears to be the dead of night. Haha, love it!
Autumn1904 in my opinion of course the music video is about a guy (Billy Joel) and his old friends from high school cruise through their old school reminiscing about their youth, and in their own way trying to capture some of it.
And do I mistake the situation, or are the Billies singing love lyrics to each other?
@@cathipalmer8217 seems like it cuz it looked like he was gonna kiss that one close to him... 😂 no big deal but funny. The lyrics lol
Autumn1904 awesome!
As a Janitor, i guarantee you that boys really do this in the bathroom.
Both Bathroom Serenade and the remake are great
And just the original song by billy joel
As the bathroom I can agree
@@m7md3d57 Lol, man you must have a weird life.
What else were you supposed to do?
My father used to listen to this song in our chevy and then he told us the tape was stuck al this time. I wish i could hear this song in that smelly car once more just to feel my dad....
I wasn’t even alive for this generation of songs, and yet I still have a nostalgia-like feeling when listening. Is there a name for that? Nostalgia for a time you never lived?
Youre on the right track child! 😁😁😁
I am sure the germans got a word for this.
Zeitgeist! I’ve been hooked on oldies too
It's about being old and reminicing about when you were young, so yeah that's kind of the point.
I know there's a typo, im not changing it
Sometimes if your parents or people that raised you have nostalgia for it then you will
Its funny how the tallest in the group who is actually supposed to add the baritone, just simply gives us the best parts of this song!. All the way from South Africa, I've loved this song for the longest time!
Everything was sang by one person
@@daddychill815 lol I know Billy Joel sang all these parts, I was talking about the music video. Crazy to even think that no musical instruments except only 1 Bass Guitar were used here, only claps, snaps & whistles... He really made a Doo-Wop.
I've been a huge Billy Joel fan since I first heard this song back in the 80s. He's written so many great songs, but this one holds a special place in my heart.
Watching this today Aug 27, 2024, I was born on Oct 1984 still enjoying the music of Mr. Billy Joel... Thank you for your gift of music to my generation Sir! 🙌👏

This song could have been written for when I met my late husband. It became a part of me the day I met him, and it's a permanent part of my heart. 💖☺️
I respect your privacy, Pardon me for writing in your comment am impressed by your personality. I admire your kind demeanour. sorry if this sounds weird, but I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you, I'd love to be friends.
I really want us to be closer to each other sharing similar ideals about life and seeing the solution to life problems..If you don't mind,I want you to send me more about your self to me .Have a splendid day
Billy is like a rock and roll legend from the 1950s-60s that time traveled to the 1980s and still rocked
Only Billy Joel could make a masterpiece out of finger snaps and doo-op!
This song is true doo wop.
Leah Mallon what about Pentatonix
I mean... It’s Alright by Huey Lewis
Well dion and the Belmont’s did it first with their single wonder why so billy joel is the second
Even in August 2024 this song still bangs 🔥🔥🔥
It's funny, Billy always griped he wasn't a great singer. But, he's crazy! He's a fantastic vocalist. Listen to the intricate harmonies and seamless vocal transitions. He sounds great even today at 70 years old.
Aj Darragh yea but he's only 68 now
Steffi ok...68 is damn near 70. No need to mince words. The dude isn't a spring chicken anymore.
I'm 43 and miss GREAT MUSIC!
And you're PRETTY!😂
KEL in MEMPHIS thanks?
Aj Darragh not good looking hot, but OK singer. He did some hits, so that is a contribution.
Okay world; this was Our Song! When I proposed to my wife, and she asked me if I was serious, I told her "I don't care what consequence it brings; I have been a fool for lesser things." That's when she knew. We were married until death did us part. Thank you, Mister Joel.
Are you saying you're dead?
Classix no I think he's saying she's dead :(
I read this just as the part came on lmao
monkeymouse I an so happy you had a full mariage. Mine did not last. She cheated and lost me but I lost her as well.
k.
Masterpiece in every way possible.. the creativity is astounding
