- In this video, Jason refines one of his overgrown Juniper cascade bonsai from the nursery. He discusses layering out pads as well as the techniques on how to space out each layer to give more depth. He also discusses the future plan on the tree and how a single branch can change a viewer's focus on the movement of the tree.

It's beautiful just the way it is with the little branch intact. On camera, the branch provides a nice balance.

Honestly, i think the sort-of thick first branch is a gem. It seems to give great balance and acts as a perfect counter to the very long cascading trunk. I think you should keep it precisely _because_ of its girth. It seems that you hot it right on the first go-around! Great job!
What I like about this channel is the videos are compact. They don't unpack the mechanics so much, rather they focus on aesthetics.

I love what you have done, don’t change it. That little branch is perfect. Your future plans about the above branches growing out and replacing that thicker lower branch is perfect. I love that your junipers have so much foliage and not wispy a-frames that others make. Please keep the videos coming. Here in Canada spring is still a month or two away!

Just finding your vlogs, so I’m catching up with older videos. This turned out really nice. I see your point about that little branch on the right. I like it , to me it’s the beginning of your focus. Then up and around the cascade.
It’s amazing how you create an outstanding cascade bonsaï. I would not cut the branch. I think it adds to thé triangle shape

Jason, I like what you did with the cascade, making it circular and layering--wonderful movement! I would suggest keeping both branches located to the right and below the apex. You could layer them, with the thick one situation below the thinner one, and even bring the right side of the apex down a little to fill-in any gap. I don't believe this would take away from the beautiful movement of the cascade. Anyway, you did a great job of bringing out the best of the tree. Thanks. I have a small Procumben in a cascade design that I just started. It only has 1 cascading branch. I kept a lower branch on the opposite side. It balances the tree. I vote keeping it on yours. I styled mine similar to yours.

I would like to see two things take place. I would remove the branch to show more of the trunk as it would draw your attention to the sweeping motion of the trunk and emphasize the cascade. I would raise the plant in the pot so that you can see more of the trunk and the sweeping motion of the Bonsai.

Time lapse was a bit quick. Woulda been nice to see more detail on the wiring your way up the cascade. But not complaining.
The branch on the right is a tough call.
The tree needs something fairly substantial in that area, but maybe not quite as heavy as that branch looks now.
Maybe shorten halfway and thin out a bit?

If this was my tree id leave that first branch, but id cut the cascade tail off just below the lip of the pot, make it a semi cascade. Replant in a more shallow square pot. Once again some nice work man, love your stuff
I vote no to removing it. As a photographer and watercolorist, I concentrate on ways to draw the viewer's eye around the picture endlessly, looking for new discoveries and turning the photo into a treasure hunt. Without the small opposing "place to go", the viewers eye would really start and end on the cascade, making it a pretty one-dimensional, easy treasure hunt. With the opposing branch, the eye, must, must go to the stub, if it is at all substantial, to find out what is going on there. After a short exploration there, the brain has to dive the eye back to the cascade to re-interpret it in light of what's been observed at the little branch (if there is any complexity there at all). The circuit continues, but as the brain calms down, it starts searching the crown, the branches, the trunk. Great video!
Don't cut it until you can replace it just like you said. It provides a nice balance and use it to it jin later.

I like the little branch as it is, I see your point But I think the way it is ads balance to the tree.
I do like the lower branch where it is. It gives the top symmetry and balances the foliage from the cascading branches
I kind of like that thick trunk but im not an expert. I would love to see the repotting and root trimming and working. I have one that i started to work with and this video was exiting.

Is that really a Procumbens? It's hard to tell from the video, but I wasn't sure if it was Procumbens or Shimpkau. I have a Procumbens Cascade that is very similar to yours. I also have the low side branch opposite the cascade branch. I've kept mine because I think it adds some balance. In your case it's hard to tell how big that smaller rear side branch is vs the thick one. I would probably remove the thicker one and as you say bend the smaller one into place and let it develop. But I think you need something in that area to balance the deep cascade. Great work! I'd love to have that tree myself as I love cascades.

The branch looks to be the perfect balance. Without it there is a bit too much movement towards the cascade and it felt out of proportion. I would leave it even if the cascade were shorter. Thanks for the nice video.

Beautiful.
Leave the fat branch as a sacrificial branch to thicken the trunk at the base. Cut and carve later once the branches above have filled in the space, and the sacrificial branch has served its purpose.
Leave the branch, it gives balance and compliments the main trunk curve.

I like it better with the little branch. I'd try to train it to grow back around and to the right, ultimately coiling around to spiral down with the big branch on the left.
You might want to leave that lower branch, let it grow way out for a couple of seasons as it will thicken the lower trunk near the base and improve the taper.
Can you show how it grew and how you are designing if you have this tree?

I have a juniper that cascades similar to this one.however the apex is pretty bald so im hoping to encourage growth on the top more. Its getting some new foliage already which is great. I haven't tried to wire pads on it yet though. Im still trying to plan out what to do with it.

It looks good, but I don’t think the lower branch is the issue, just wondering if you lift the plants in bring it slightly higher I think it will make a big difference. I believe the lower branch hold the balance of the plants

The branch gives a nice shape to the trunk but as you say it does take some attention away from the cascade I would turn it into a nice jin then move the back branch where you said
I think that the back branch can fill that gap and you can create a jin. Maybe It would be great, but now It looks great too
I would consider making the back the front' that would allow you to keep the first branch as a back branch. Slowly twist the cascade to the new front. The twist in the cascade then can be considered for possible shari and dead wood features down the track. Does this sound feasible?

Very nice pot. Does your tree get berries? I'd maybe shorten the actual cascade, taking out the thick middle stem that's already reaching the table and competing with the main trunk, so that the leaves would "smallen" before reaching the bottom, and the mountain (vase) would look higher. It's beautiful and must smell so nice while you're working on it! - very lucky :-)
Oh, please keep the branch. It is a bit too big, but it's great at picking up the forward movement of the long cascade branch.
I mean, the long cascade branch as it goes down first goes back, but at the bottom moves forward. And then it ends.
If you cut off that branch, the eye if the viewer is lost at this point, doesn't know where to go. With the branch, the eye continues and completes the circle (or the oval) from the forward bottom of the cascade branch to the forward of that branch (the one you think of cutting off), based on forwardness of both.
Sorry, I don't know if I explained it well.
You can make that branch a Jin or dead-wood branch and that would add a nice touch

I’m trying to understand what you look for to identify front to back when shaping
good branch placement, interesting trunk line, as few flaws as possible, sometimes you are choosing a best front, sometimes you are choosing the least bad front, if that makes sense, basically just work with what you have and choose the side that shows the best features and hides as many of the worst features as possible

Cut it or Jin it. I do think it’s too heavy for the design. Maybe grow the branch above it a little and add some density to it. But the low right branch is too much.
