  • Everybody loves cascade-style bonsai, and Eric demonstrates how to initially form a cascade through thinning, wiring, and styling three Junipers! The first two are younger, growing in 1 gallon containers, while the third is a few years older.
    00:00:43 Eric kicks off by wiring two large shoots.
    00:01:22 Cascades in the wild, as inspiration.
    00:02:27 Jin and shari work.
    00:03:06 Reorienting the tree to cascade position.
    00:04:13 Adding movement and accentuating a twist - setting the structure.
    00:05:13 Jim Gremel's US National show-winning cascade and how Eric is styling a tree similarly.
    00:06:38 Eric thins the older tree to examine the results of the type of work he just demonstrated with the two younger trees, a few years after. He reviews the structure and adds a twisting shari.
    00:08:10 Wiring and styling the strong shoots that have good wood.
    00:09:54 Eric shares the extra logistics required as a cascade grows beyond the bottom of its container.

    The cascading trees are one of my favorite especially when I go and see them high in the rocky mountains.

    I believe you have 1 of the top 3 bonsai channels of all that I’ve seen. The knowledge, but also the editing. A lot goes into this and it shows in it’s simplicity, and the timing of edits and angles of the shots. Great work I love all of your work I do.

      Thanks.🙏 I approach it with the attitude that a poorly edited or filmed video is just a waste of the viewers time.

    First off your channel is awesome. i have learned more here then I have from my local bonsai expert. Second the pots at the 6:38 mark, what are they and where can i find them?

      Thanks! The square pond baskets I use are from "Finofil" but are from England. Most pond baskets disintegrate in the sun after 1-2 years but these last a long time. However I've largely stopped using them because they are more expensive and harder to get than root bags. A 3- or 5-gallon root bag is my new normal for this larger size growing operation. Here's a link to John's shop that has some of the pond baskets: leftcoastbonsai.com/collections/felt-grow-bags
      And you can find grow bags there or on my site here:

    I’m gonna be referring beginners to this one very often since they love making cascade junipers lol

    Great video as alway. One of my favorite utube channel for sure. What type of junipers are these? Thanks

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว

      Kishu, which is a shimpaku sub-variety. (Juniperus chinensis v. sargentii)

      @184445 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, I saw on one of your videos on cascade bonsai you had some juniper in what look like 1 gallon fabric containers. Do you sell those also?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not yet, we're working on larger juniper stock but it's still growing out.

      97% online. We are in the SF Bay Area. We also do a few regional vending events each year, but no more this year.

    Where do you hike to see them?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sierra junipers are in granite areas above ~6000ft in the Central and Northern Sierra typically. CA junipers are in the transverse ranges in SoCal. RMJ's are all over the northern Rocky's but sporadically. The wild ones shown here are near Meiss meadow just south of South Lake Tahoe.

    Where can I get material like this ? North central florida

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean the first couple - we ship junipers to Florida. If you mean the later one - not easy to find. But the good news is junipers will grow quite fast in your climate! These are all "kishu" Chinese junipers.

    Sorry Eric, but I find the monotonous background drumming very distracting. Videos as good and interesting as yours do not need backing tracks like this.

    Mine is drying out and I'm not sure why

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว

      Juniper death is often caused by too little water or root rot in heat. But it's difficult to tell sometimes. As long as you keep them outside (in Northern climates providing winter protection) in full sun and regular water and fertilizer you should get good growth.
