- What's the weirdest trade you've ever made? I once had this beat to hell Monte Carlo that couldn't start, so I put an ad on Craigslist and said I'd be selling it for $500 or the most interesting trade. The offers I got were outstanding. A N64, a case of Jack Daniels, Cubs tickets... but in the end someone offered straight cash and since you can't pay for rent with whiskey I made the deal. I still regret it. Tattoo artists have been known to trade their art for stuff, so we wanted to know what the most interesting trade they ever made was.
Welcome to Season 21 of Tattoo Artists React! I bet you didn’t think we’d make it this far, did you? We certainly didn’t. This time around we’ve gathered a bunch of our favorite tattooers and asked them a bunch of questions… you know, like we’ve done every other season. But that doesn’t mean it’s not going to be a ton of fun! Like, you’ve probably eaten french fries 10,000 times but when you see them on the menu you still order them. I’m rambling. What's the most ridiculous trade you've ever made?
I've traded over $100 worth of custom jewelry I made to some kids for some vinyl print stickers to iron onto t-shirts that was probably not even worth $20.

My artist once offered me a large tattoo in exchange for assembling his new tattoo supply storage unit. The thing was huge and hundreds of pieces so it was a fair trade in terms of time spent working.
I'm a Coffee Roaster / Barista and I used to trade coffee drinks / Coffee Beans / Cookies / Pastries....anything we sold in the Cafe, for tattoo sessions. Artist would come in grab his stuff for "free" (on a tab) I would pay off that tab in small increments and keep track of how much we were at. When it got to the $300-$400 mark, we would book a session and get it done. It was nice being able to pay small amounts over time rather than a lump sum all at once. felt a bit easier to budget. got 2-3 tattoos this way :)
Neither of us saved any money doing it this way really. But was fun while it lasted.

I teach English as a second language abroad. My tattoo artist wanted to have classes in exchange for a tattoo. We worked out the nitty gritty and he gave me the tattoo (two photorealism cherries over my ankle.) Then he never came to any of the English classes. So basically I got a tattoo for free.
I used to be a hair stylist, and I traded a haircut for a Dyson vacuum once. I was pretty proud 😊
That's a crazy trade. Thats like 50 dollar hair cut vs a 400 dollar vacuum

I'm currently trading hand made leather goods for a full sleeve. I've made a plague doctor mask and hat, and a big leather bag so far.
I love doing trades with tattoo artists! I'm a potter and I've traded ceramics for 4 or 5 of my tattoos.
As a tattoo artist I can’t even count the amount of things I’ve traded for tattoos. I especially love trading with fellow artists and also for Disneyland tickets. Cause I’m a nerd 🐭 ❤
I was suppose to trade someone tattoos to work on my 61 Chevy but that fell through. I’m a traditional artist in LA if any mechanics are reading this 😂
How do you propose a trade with an artist?
My chiropractor is into plants specifically orchids so i drew him up a bicep piece just for fun, guy then goes and gets it tattooed AND gave me free adjustments for afew months
The vast majority of my tattoos I didn't pay for them. They were trade for my services as a professional private Chef. Since the hourly rate is similar and everybody like to eat it's an easy trade 😎.
I’m an electrician and my brother in law is a tattoo artist. We have traded our skills multiple times. I can definitely see someone feeling screwed over, but I have always been happy with our trades.
I traded a half off groom for my artist’s pup for half off my tat she’s a wonderful lady indeed! Such a chill vibe!

Why not ask, honestly? If you have a unique service, unique item or item that's worth more than the price of the tattoo you might as well give it a go. The worse thats gonna happen is they say no lol. As an artist I get tips in all sorts of ways.... Weed, dog or cat supplies, food, etc. But if someone wanted to barter and is something I'm interested in I'd totally go for it
i traded my artist for a limited edition snowboard with bindings..... i think it was a trade skewed towards him but sooo worth it. the board was about the same cost wise as the tattoo woulda been and he got a massive tip
I won a tattoo at a silent auction charity event. So dude did a tattoo for charity and I have a super nice tattoo ✌🏻
An artist I have met learned that I collect vintage and antiques he said he will trade as many tattoos as I can find antique doorbells and alarms. I’m still on the hunt.
I always knew this was a thing but I didn't realize how common it was... the most valuable skill I have is dog training, I wonder if anyone would trade training sessions for a tattoo 😅

Car repair and a tattoo are unequal trades in that you need to have your car running, but you don't need a tattoo.
The monetary value being reversed kinda makes the trade more even. Higher cost unnecessary item ≃ lower cost necessary item.
But in reality, all that matters is that both parties are cool with the trade
Cars cost a lot of money to repair though. Easily adds up to over a grand fast small problems anymore

Trading is how Markets started though. We just evolved to using currency. It’s like a contract negotiate before you agree.

This a party game my friend played once. You start with a balloon, and you split into teams of 2, then you all go opposite ways in the neighborhood. The rule is that you must accept all trades.

I traded tattoos for a massage, haircuts, sneakers, art classes, the trade is almost always in favour of the tattooer cause lets be honest, an avrege tattoo costs us around 10-20$, so unless youre a fully booked waiting list artist and youre giving up a paying client for the trade, youll probebly always win the trades :)
I've done a lot of "EEEEHHHHHHH!" tattoos for drugs back in my youth. Now that I'm grown I put that trashy tattoo skills, and the drug away an started this jewelry business. But I love that flip shades just said "drugs.......all the drugs.........u name it I've tattooed for it."
I ran a barbershop, in collaboration with a tattoo studio, and they would get free haircuts, and I would get free tattoos, the money didn't match up but as a collaborative group we were happy to exchange each other's services.. I think across the 2 years I had the shop I would have gotten close to 5k in tattoo off of all the artists there

I hand carved a wooden staff with a burl on the head. Spent 30ish hours working on it for my thigh piece.
I traded a tape deck from a car for a tattoo. Yes it was that long ago. I gave the guy the tape deck. He gave me 60 dollars. I gave him the 60 dollar back, he gave me a tattoo.

Really curious if trading for tattoos is an American thing only? I live in Germany and could never ever see an artist agreeing to tattooing for stuff or services, unless you're super close or best friends with them
I feel like it’s more for beginner artists. After you’re established they usually only take money

dude 's argument that somebody's gonna feel f*ked over in trading makes no sense, giving money also will have the same effect. I got a tiny tattoo recently and it cost so much more than it should have. but if I had tried to lower the price then the tattooist would have also felt f*ked over since he thinks his time is worth so much.

Idk, car jobs can be really expensive. It can cost over $1000 for certain parts. Not necessarily cheaper than a tattoo.

I see both sides of this. The best is always paying for it. But I would also love to trade my photography services for a sick tattoo. I live in america and saving money is hard. And I would love to get all my pieces by the time I am 32(27 now). I want at least a full backpiece and I like hyporealism. That's an investment. So if any of yall are good at black and gray hyperrealistic animals and want to trade for as much camerawork as you think is fair, I'm down.

The hair instructor at the local beauty school I go to gwt my hair done is covered in tattoos. I once asked and he trades doing make up for wedding with this tatto artist cut ans color for the tattoo artist wife etc.
